Principal’s Message
Happy New Year! We hope everyone enjoyed a restful and relaxing holiday
break. Now we’re back preparing for a busy January filled with many
academic and extra-curricular events.
Our exam week begins January 27 and continues until February 2; however,
provincial exams for Grade 12 students have already started and take
place at different times over the month of January. Over the next three
weeks students will be busy finishing their course work to ensure they
have their best work completed in the courses they are currently taking.
Have your son/daughter see a Guidance Counsellor if they need their
course selections checked over before starting Semester 2.
Stevenson Homework Club
Stevenson Homework Club held their annual Holiday Party on Wednesday, December 14th. The party is an
annual event that the SJCI students put on for Stevenson Britannia students. The party began with an organized
craft for the Stevenson students to complete. The students made reindeers out of candy canes this year!
A special snack was provided for the party; everyone enjoyed sugar cookies, mandarin oranges, chocolate
milk and egg nog! A great time was had by both Stevenson Britannia and St. James Collegiate students.
Extra-curricular events continue during the month of January while students
finish Semester 1. Our boys’ hockey team will be participating in
an inter-provincial tournament in Moncton, New Brunswick at the end
of January and basketball teams are very busy with practices, games and
tournaments. The students involved in the Drama production this year are
practicing each day to prepare for another great week of theatre for our
enjoyment during March. Don’t miss their production, MASH, just before
Spring Break.
After six and a half years of service as the Principal of St. James Collegiate,
I will be leaving at the end of January to pursue new adventures. It
has been both an honour and a privilege to work with the students, staff
and parents of St. James Collegiate. Please welcome Mr. Kevin Dueck as
our new Principal effective February 1, 2012.
Spirit Week
Our December Spirit Week featured four different daily themes: Sports Day, Fashion Disastuh, 80s Day, and
Holiday/Ugly Sweater Day. At the end of Spirit Week, we celebrated the beginning of holidays with a loudand-proud
Jimmies Jam and our first ever “Jimmies Got Talent” show. Thanks to all the staff and students who
dressed up and participated throughout Spirit Week!
GSA Attend StandOUT Conference
Seven students attended the StandOUT Conference at the University of Winnipeg on Wednesday, Dec. 14th.
They were quite moved by Jeremy Dias who was the keynote speaker. Please check out www.jersvision.org
for more information on Jeremy and his story. The students also attended workshops and came back ready
with an action plan to further develop our Bulletin Board, plan additional activities for our student body, etc. -
all around the idea of Respecting Diversity!
Aboriginal Students’ Group News
A number of aboriginal students visited the
University of Manitoba on Friday, Dec. 16th.
We visited the Entymology Department,
checking out the stickbugs and Madagascar
cockroaches. We also participated in a Scavenger
Hunt finding out a little more about the
campus and what it has to offer. The afternoon
involved a discussion group on Governance
- which will be an ongoing theme
for this group for the remainder of the year.
Thank-you to Christine Cyr for organizing
this event for us. Also, our aboriginal students
group gathered for the Annual Aboriginal
Holiday Feast on Tuesday, Dec. 20th. A delicious
meal of Indian tacos, veggies, Christmas
cookies and oranges were enjoyed by all.
Siloam Mission Holiday Volunteers
For the fifth consecutive year, staff and students from St. James Collegiate offered service with a smile
to the patrons of Siloam Mission. On December 15th we prepared and served a holiday meal for over
300 people while the school choir performed a spectacular selection of Christmas carols for all to enjoy.
The experience was both fun and rewarding for all participants.
Christmas Classic Tournament
Luke Seburn and Kelsey Ngo
Our annual Christmas Classic Boys Basketball Tournament
was a big success once again this year. The
tournament is a week-long event featuring 8 JV teams
and 8 Varsity teams from some of the best AAA
schools in the province. Our boys did us proud once
again as both the JV and Varsity teams made the finals.
Both teams lost close games to Westgate. January and
February should be exciting with our Varsity Boys
team looking to repeat as AAA provincial champions!
The Fashion Show will be held on Thursday, March 1,
2012. Parental support will be required to ensure a successful
evening. A number of parents will be required to
pick up and drop off clothing the day before, the day of,
and the day after and to provide refreshments. Anyone
with donations for the silent auction can drop them off
anytime at the school. Letters are available for any businesses
who require them.
Graduation photos will be taken during exam week on
Wednesday, February 1 & Thursday, February 2. Appointments
must be made with Ms Tuchscherer. Sitting fees
are paid to the photographer. All students should make
arrangements to have their picture done at school so they
can be included in the yearbook and in the grad composite.
Cap and Gown fees should now be paid to Ms Tuchscherer
if you are planning to attend the formal convocation at
St. Paul the Apostle Church on Wednesday, June 27.
The fee is $25 and includes the rental of the gown and
purchase of the memento cap and tassel. If this is not
paid, you will not be able to receive your diploma during
the ceremony.
