F O R 2010! This year we offer numerous camps with the traditional <strong>Heights</strong><br />
characteristics of personal attention, good humor, and a spirit of adventure —<br />
whether it is practic<strong>in</strong>g keyboard<strong>in</strong>g or sett<strong>in</strong>g off on one of the activities <strong>in</strong><br />
the tried and true nature camp or the unique and celebrated “dangerous”<br />
camp. And, of course, these traditional characteristics are brought to life by<br />
our dedicated and enthusiastic faculty, many of whom are direct<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
specific programs.<br />
We are pleased to offer a good number and variety of programs: <strong>in</strong>gredients for<br />
an enrich<strong>in</strong>g summer for present <strong>Heights</strong> students and for boys who just<br />
experience our school dur<strong>in</strong>g the summer. Our programs now <strong>in</strong>clude a new<br />
“<strong>Heights</strong> Heraldry” camp <strong>in</strong> addition to two Adventure History camps – the<br />
classic Civil War Leadership camp as well as <strong>The</strong> Found<strong>in</strong>g of America camp.<br />
We look forward to see<strong>in</strong>g you this summer for more “adventures <strong>in</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g!”<br />

English Literature<br />
Ref<strong>in</strong>e your read<strong>in</strong>g and writ<strong>in</strong>g skills while enjoy<strong>in</strong>g great English<br />
literature. This program is designed to both strengthen the academic skills of<br />
careful read<strong>in</strong>g and clear critical writ<strong>in</strong>g as well as to further a true enjoyment<br />
of literature.<br />
<strong>The</strong> course is for upper school students. <strong>The</strong>re are two classes offered, one <strong>in</strong> the<br />
morn<strong>in</strong>g and the second <strong>in</strong> the afternoon. <strong>The</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g class will focus on short<br />
stories, novels, and essays. <strong>The</strong> afternoon class will focus on poetry, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
epic, and public speak<strong>in</strong>g. Both classes will feature writ<strong>in</strong>g exercises.<br />
<strong>The</strong> course can earn academic credit as a replacement for a past English course<br />
or as an elective (This will need to be approved by the director and the head of<br />
upper school).<br />

Computer Skills<br />
Develop quick and accurate typ<strong>in</strong>g skills <strong>in</strong> this practical computer<br />
program. Daily lessons will <strong>in</strong>clude touch-typ<strong>in</strong>g techniques, drill sessions to<br />
improve accuracy, and tutorials <strong>in</strong> Microsoft Word & Excel. Tailored activities for<br />
beg<strong>in</strong>ner or advanced computer-users make this a valuable experience <strong>in</strong><br />
prepar<strong>in</strong>g for the next step <strong>in</strong> every student’s career. <strong>The</strong>re will also be some<br />
games and competitions to fill out the program.<br />

Lat<strong>in</strong> & Greek<br />
Enhance your basic Lat<strong>in</strong> skills or move ahead on <strong>The</strong> <strong>Heights</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong> track<br />
this summer. This adaptable program will benefit the student who simply wishes<br />
to firm his Lat<strong>in</strong> foundation and serve to aid those who would like to advance<br />
more quickly. A Greek I program is also available to those look<strong>in</strong>g to open the<br />
door to Greek language and culture. <strong>The</strong> program uses the texts written by<br />
<strong>Heights</strong> teachers as well as the Jenny’s Lat<strong>in</strong> text.<br />

Lat<strong>in</strong> A: for enter<strong>in</strong>g 8th graders; focuses on the declensions of nouns and<br />
adjectives and the conjugation of verbs; vocabulary is emphasized<br />

Writ<strong>in</strong>g Workshop<br />
Sharpen your study skills and strengthen your writ<strong>in</strong>g habits <strong>in</strong> this one-week<br />
workshop placed shortly before the new school year beg<strong>in</strong>s! In this program,<br />
students further develop their academic habits. <strong>The</strong> habits that will be exam<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
most closely <strong>in</strong>clude: writ<strong>in</strong>g and outl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g practices, proofread<strong>in</strong>g, homework<br />
and concentration habits, techniques for read<strong>in</strong>g, techniques for memoriz<strong>in</strong>g, a<br />
short review of mathematical subjects taught <strong>in</strong> the previous school year, habits to<br />
improve time management and<br />
organization, techniques for testtak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Travel to the sites of some of the most important<br />
memorials and battles of the Civil War. Follow the<br />
greatest <strong>in</strong>ternal struggle our nation has ever faced,<br />
test<strong>in</strong>g whether our young nation would ultimately<br />
survive. Trips will highlight the major leaders of the<br />
war on both sides of the conflict, exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
particular the leadership qualities of General Robert<br />
E. Lee and President Abraham L<strong>in</strong>coln. In a 5-day<br />
period, we will travel from the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gs of the war<br />
(with the 1st Battle of Bull Run), mov<strong>in</strong>g to its greatest<br />
conflict (at the Battle of Gettysburg), and end<strong>in</strong>g with<br />
the assass<strong>in</strong>ation of Abraham L<strong>in</strong>coln, the nation’s<br />
leader throughout the War (visit<strong>in</strong>g the Ford’s <strong>The</strong>ater and the L<strong>in</strong>coln<br />
Memorial). A typical day <strong>in</strong>cludes short classes and a trip to a museum or other<br />
notable location of <strong>in</strong>terest.<br />

Discover how our nation was founded and explore the roots of our political<br />
tradition. This camp will beg<strong>in</strong> by first visit<strong>in</strong>g Our Nation’s Capital: see<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
experienc<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>stitutions and documents that have formed our country and<br />
government. <strong>The</strong> camp will then trace America’s political traditions back to its<br />
found<strong>in</strong>g and the leaders who led our country at that critical time.<br />

Chess<br />
Learn the Royal Game the fun way! At <strong>The</strong> <strong>Heights</strong> Chess Camp, every hour is<br />
unique. <strong>The</strong> camp provides boys with <strong>in</strong>teractive lessons, competitive matches,<br />
excit<strong>in</strong>g activities, and much more than simple chess skills. Whether learn<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
game for the first time or look<strong>in</strong>g to master it, boys ages 6-13 can enjoy the<br />
Game of K<strong>in</strong>gs and all its auxiliary benefits, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g logic, prudence, patience,<br />
forethought, and many attention and analytical skills. In addition to teach<strong>in</strong>g these<br />
skills, the camp will also guarantee to improve your game. Most importantly, all<br />
activities will take place <strong>in</strong> a fun and enjoyable environment under cheerful<br />

Dangerous Camp<br />
for Boys<br />
A D V E N T U R E & L E A R N I N G P R O G R A M S<br />
All boys need adventure <strong>in</strong> their life. This camp is for those boys (and for parents<br />
want<strong>in</strong>g their boys to be) <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g hobbies, special academic <strong>in</strong>terests,<br />
outdoorsy skills, and a love of adventure and life outside of video games and movies.<br />
<strong>The</strong> DC4B offers a generous sampl<strong>in</strong>g of activities and lessons that familiarizes the<br />
campers with games, hobbies, and skills that every boy should know and love. <strong>The</strong><br />
camp aims to <strong>in</strong>spire a yearn<strong>in</strong>g for productivity, knowledge of the world, and<br />
adventure, as well as equip boys with a tool-kit of ideas with<br />
which to enjoy their “free-time”— the challenge and<br />
opportunity for all boys dur<strong>in</strong>g summer. It is much more ideaspecific<br />
than the usual “boys summer camp”. With its<br />
conglomerate of themes, this camp is directed with a specific<br />
vision towards the healthy, all-around growth of boys, body and<br />
m<strong>in</strong>d, through healthy, active leisure. This camp will provide<br />
readers with adventure and outdoorsmen with culture.<br />
<strong>The</strong> camp will be divided <strong>in</strong>to four ‘companies,’ allow<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
boys to take part <strong>in</strong> a friendly competition that culm<strong>in</strong>ates on<br />
the f<strong>in</strong>al day of camp. Sample activities may <strong>in</strong>clude sports,<br />
field trips, short stories, yo-yos, harmonicas, code-break<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
poem recitals, boulder<strong>in</strong>g, historic battle analyses, juggl<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
paper airplanes, fire-build<strong>in</strong>g, character talks, capture-theflag,<br />
ty<strong>in</strong>g knots, climb<strong>in</strong>g trees, sl<strong>in</strong>gshots, chess, lawn games,<br />
and creek<strong>in</strong>g. Boys have the option to attend the full two-week session or to attend<br />
one week.<br />

Explore the excit<strong>in</strong>g world of medieval knights <strong>in</strong> this multi-faceted camp.<br />
With a wide range of activities, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g art and physical competitions, model<br />
build<strong>in</strong>g and medieval manners, your young squires will discover their nobility.<br />
Each day will <strong>in</strong>clude study and strength—the necessary steps to knighthood.<br />
Boys will also learn about medieval warfare and customs and have the chance<br />

Learn to perform and improvise <strong>in</strong> the excit<strong>in</strong>g world of modern jazz/rock<br />
music. Re<strong>in</strong>force your understand<strong>in</strong>g of form, chords and scales while you record<br />
<strong>in</strong> a small group sett<strong>in</strong>g. Jazz Improv! is a fun camp for every aspir<strong>in</strong>g musician<br />
<strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> expand<strong>in</strong>g the way he sees, hears, understands and performs music.<br />
Whether you play trumpet, trombone, saxophone, clar<strong>in</strong>et or flute; drum set,<br />
piano, bass, guitar or vocals, jazz camp is an excit<strong>in</strong>g opportunity to play what you<br />
hear <strong>in</strong> a small group sett<strong>in</strong>g. This camp is highly recommended for young rock<br />
musicians who are look<strong>in</strong>g for the tools to figure out cover songs, write their own<br />
songs, and learn to improvise on their <strong>in</strong>struments as well as aspir<strong>in</strong>g, novice and<br />
seasoned jazz musicians <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g new friends and play<strong>in</strong>g new tunes.<br />

<strong>The</strong> various <strong>in</strong>gredients of this camp make for a fantastic summer experience.<br />
From the personal attention and fun atmosphere of learn<strong>in</strong>g, to the outdoor<br />
adventures and games, this is an experience hard to beat or imitate. Activities:<br />
short classes, nature walks, daily journal, creek exploration, games, field and<br />

Basketball<br />
Improve your ability to make the team and then make the team better at this<br />
challeng<strong>in</strong>g, fun-filled camp.<br />
Players, grouped by age, receive <strong>in</strong>struction <strong>in</strong> the fundamentals of the game, and<br />
the virtues of a sportsman. Each boy competes <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual skill contests and<br />
team play. <strong>The</strong> week culm<strong>in</strong>ates <strong>in</strong> an awards ceremony honor<strong>in</strong>g the outstand<strong>in</strong>g<br />
campers of the session. Guest speakers, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g college athletes and coaches,<br />
enhance the <strong>in</strong>struction at the camp. Younger players receive <strong>in</strong>struction <strong>in</strong> the<br />
fundamentals—from the backdoor cut to the layup, from box<strong>in</strong>g out to scor<strong>in</strong>g<br />
with the game on the l<strong>in</strong>e. Older boys sharpen their skills for high level<br />
competition; they learn strength tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g techniques specific to basketball to<br />
<strong>in</strong>crease explosiveness and quickness and to prevent <strong>in</strong>jury. <strong>The</strong> Cavaliers<br />
basketball camp is a great place to learn the game and to prepare for the demands<br />
of varsity basketball <strong>in</strong> the Wash<strong>in</strong>gton area.<br />

S T A F F Pat Ward is the Middle <strong>School</strong> Athletic Director and Head of the Physical Education<br />
Department at <strong>The</strong> <strong>Heights</strong> <strong>School</strong>. For the past n<strong>in</strong>e years, Pat has been the Offensive<br />
L<strong>in</strong>e Coach at St. John’s College High <strong>School</strong>. As a player, Coach Ward was a two-time<br />
football All-Met and All-American recipient at St. John’s College High <strong>School</strong>. A four-year<br />
starter at <strong>The</strong> University of Maryland, Coach Ward was an All-Conference ACC player and<br />
the recipient of the prestigious A.V. Williams Award given to the UMD football player<br />
demonstrat<strong>in</strong>g outstand<strong>in</strong>g sportsmanship. Pat has recently been <strong>in</strong>ducted <strong>in</strong>to the<br />
Sports Hall of Fame at St. John’s College High <strong>School</strong>. In 2009, he was voted assistant<br />
football coach of the year by DCSportsFan. Dave Grieco is a 3rd grade teacher and<br />
assistant coach for varsity baseball and jv basketball at <strong>The</strong> <strong>Heights</strong>. He has played 9<br />
years of organized football. He was an All-County wide receiver and a 3rd-team All State<br />
receiver (New Jersey). Dave currently holds 3 receiv<strong>in</strong>g records at Governor Liv<strong>in</strong>gston High<br />
<strong>School</strong> and played a year at Sa<strong>in</strong>t Anselm College. Jason Hebert currently teaches 5th<br />
grade and art at <strong>The</strong> <strong>Heights</strong>. <strong>The</strong> former NFL safety (Chargers and Titans) earned All-<br />
District and All-Greater-Houston (TX) honors <strong>in</strong> high school. He played at Rice University<br />
where he accumulated multiple All-Conference honors, and was named one of the four<br />
best defensive backs <strong>in</strong> the history of the university <strong>in</strong> a recent USA Today publication.<br />

fundamentals of lacrosse. Coach Pim was named "Man of the Year" <strong>in</strong> 2007 for his<br />
contribution to lacrosse <strong>in</strong> Montgomery County and "Coach of the Year" <strong>in</strong> 2008 for the<br />
Maryland Independent Lacrosse League.<br />

A perfect camp for young boys, this sports camp allows boys to experience a<br />
variety of sports <strong>in</strong> a personable and fun sett<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong> program features light<br />
tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a few sports, such as basketball, football, and soccer, and the fun<br />
experience of games. Boys are <strong>in</strong>troduced to a variety of sports and are then better<br />
able to decide where they would like to focus as they grow older while still hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Develop your wrestl<strong>in</strong>g game and learn how to fight at close quarters.<br />
Wrestlers grouped by age, skill, and experience will learn the basics, practice<br />
moves, analyze wrestl<strong>in</strong>g film, and fight for the top spot <strong>in</strong> takedown<br />
competitions and live wrestl<strong>in</strong>g. Wrestlers will put new moves and strategies to<br />
work <strong>in</strong> technique sessions and try them out later <strong>in</strong> all-out live wrestl<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

S T A F F Sam Vanderplas, Middle-<strong>School</strong> Wrestl<strong>in</strong>g Coach and Assistant Varsity Wrestl<strong>in</strong>g Coach,<br />
coaches and directs the program. Coach Vanderplas has also completed the American<br />
College of Sports Medic<strong>in</strong>e course for weight tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Joel Sellier wrestled for Bishop<br />
O'Connell High <strong>School</strong> for 3 years. On Varsity he competed <strong>in</strong> the Virg<strong>in</strong>ia Independent<br />
<strong>School</strong> Championship Tournament. In the William & Mary wrestl<strong>in</strong>g tournament he was<br />
the 189 champion. He has over 8 years of coach<strong>in</strong>g experience.<br />
