My Cowlishaw Book
Welcome to Kindergarten!

There are different ways to come to school or go home. I might
take a school bus, walk, or ride in a car. My mom or dad will tell
me and the school which way I’m going home. My teacher will
make sure I go home the right way.
If I ride the bus home I will have a tag
on my backpack with my bus number
on it. I need to know my bus number.
All the kindergarteners on my bus will
sit in a line in the gym. When my bus
gets to school we will all walk to the
bus together in a line. I will get on the
bus and sty in my seat till I’m at my
bus stop. Someone will be at my bus
stop to get me when I get to my stop.
If I walk, I will walk with a family
member. At the end of the day my
teacher will walk me to the
kindergarten pick up door. A family
member will pick me up at that door,
and then we will walk home.
If I ride in a car then I will wait in the
car line in the hallway. When the bell
rings the teachers will walk me to the
car rider side walk. I will wait safely
on the sidewalk till the teacher calls
my name. If I see my car I will wait till
the teacher tells me it’s safe to go.

Soon I will be in Kindergarten. I will be in a new school. I will
have a new teacher.

This is a kindergarten classroom. My room might look like this.
It has tables, chairs, a carpet, backpack hooks, and a Smart
Board.

When I am at school my name will be on the good choice, bad
choice chart. If I am making good choices my name will stay on
the green side. This means I’m making good choices and
showing expected behavior!

This is the hallway. When my class walks in the hallway we walk
in a line. I walk with my hands to myself and my voice turned
off. When I am quiet, no talking, that means I’m at level zero.
Shhhh.

If I need to use the bathroom my teacher will let me go. I need
to look at the sign to see which bathroom to go into.
Girls or Boys?

In Kindergarten we go to specials. That means I go to P.E.,
Music, Library, Computer Lab, and Art class. Sometimes I have
two specials, like first music, then PE. Other days I only have
one special, like Art.

Every day I will eat lunch with my new Kindergarten friends. I
can bring my lunch in a lunch box or buy lunch. There are many
tables. My class will all sit together at a table.

We also get to go to recess! I can play with balls, jump ropes, or
hula-hoops on the black top. I can play in the grass, too. There
is also a playground with a swings, slides, and monkey bars.

I can have lots of fun at recess, but when the lunch teacher
blows the whistle I will line up with my class to go back inside.

I might also see some other places in the building. Sometimes
the teacher will ask a student to deliver the lunch list to the
main office. If I’m not feeling well and need to see the nurse
my teacher can give me a pass to go to the nurse’s office.

I might feel a little nervous, scared, or uncomfortable about my
first day of school, and that’s ok. I can read this book and look
at my school. Soon I will meet my teacher, see my classroom,
and make new friends. As long as I follow the rules and make
good choices I will have fun at school. I will learn many new
things and be very smart.
