Jurors’ Statement
My interest in photography is much the same as the
way I describe the photography program and galleries
that I direct at The University of the Arts where I teach.
Over the past twenty-eight years, a veritable who’s-who
of photography has been shown on the walls of the
Mednick Gallery, a small but consistently active space.
When I’m asked what the philosophy of the gallery is, I
like to say that we are dogmatically non-dogmatic, and
open to a wide variety of work, with a very broad definition
of what constitutes contemporary photographic
practice. Accordingly, in one year it’s not uncommon
for us to exhibit conceptual, traditional, documentary,
alternative process, book arts, digital, and mixed-media
work. We feature well-known names in photography
as well as emerging artists, providing some with their
first solo exhibition. And I think
that this represents my personal
curatorial approach as well. I’m
interested in strong work that
reveals a commitment and personal
aesthetic stance. I’m not
especially swayed by trends, or
some vague definition of “hip,”
but a profound commitment to
making a personal statement
that makes no compromises.
About the Juror
Mr. Fogel maintains a substantial
exhibition and lecture record,
and his work can be found in the
collections of numerous museums.
His research on the relationship
between photography
and the American Presidency has led to interviews with
President Jimmy Carter, President Gerald Ford, and First
Lady Betty Ford. Fogel has directed the Sol Mednick
Gallery since 1997 and he founded Gallery 1401 in 1999.
The Sol Mednick Gallery was founded in 1978 by then
Department Chair Ray Metzker, and is named after the
founder of The University of the Arts Photography Program,
Sol Mednick. It is the only endowed gallery for the
exhibition of contemporary photography in Philadelphia.
The Media Arts Department, home to the photography,
film, digital video, and animation programs at The University
of the Arts, operates the galleries. In 2001, the Sol
Mednick Gallery received the prestigious Photo Review
Award for service to photography. Fogel’s curatorial
experience includes directing and organizing more than
200 exhibitions of photography over the past 20 years.
When Sending press releases to TPS, we would appreciate
you enclosing the information in the body of an e-mail
rather than e-mailing a pdf of the invitation or an eVite.
We can then copy the information over to the website and
Painting The Desert Photo Workshop
August 11 – 13
Cibolo Creek Ranch has partnered up with Wyman
Meinzer [Benjamin], the Official Photographer of Texas,
to offer shutterbug enthusiasts a unique opportunity.
Cibolo Creek Ranch is located just 12 miles from
Shafter and is an oasis in the middle of our beautiful
Big Bend Country. Wyman emphasizes the use of natural
light, and will also show how he uses a spotlight
to “paint” his subjects after the days light has faded.
Participants will learn how to capture the vivid colors
of the desert by stroking their subject with a muted
spotlight while utilizing the shutter control. Limited
enrollment. Contact Cibolo Creek Ranch & Resort at
www.cibolocreekranch.com or 432-229-3737.
June 26 – July 6 & August 24 – September 3
Ron Rosenstock [Holden, MA] is leading his last
two tours to Ireland this year. To make the trips more
affordable for anyone wanting to travel with him in
2006, Strabo Tours is offering a $200 discount and
eliminating the single room supplement. That means
a combined savings that just about equals the airfare.
And, with only seven guest bedrooms in the house, it
intimate workshop. Sign up with Jacque at Strabo
