Entrance to the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg through the Public Hospital of 1773
Among the many delights of the Colonial
Williamsburg Foundation are its two
world-class museums—the DeWitt Wallace
Decorative Arts Museum and the Abby
Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum,
together known as the Art Museums of
Colonial Williamsburg. A busy schedule
of changing exhibitions, lively musical
presentations, and engaging programs attracts
hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.
The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts
Museum is located just one block from
historic Duke of Gloucester Street and
the bustling Merchants Square shopping
district. The museum is home to a renowned
collection of British and American fine and
decorative arts ranging in date from 1600
through the 1830s. Opened in 1985, the
handsome 100,000-square-foot facility
4 | Historic Triangle What’s Up ? Magazine August/September 2014
contains twenty-six exhibition galleries, as
well as a state-of-the-art auditorium, the
popular Colonial Williamsburg Museum
Store, and the casual Museum Café.
Creation of the complex was made possible
by a generous gift from DeWitt and Lila
Acheson Wallace, founders of Reader’s
Digest.
The DeWitt Wallace Museum hosts a
broad array of regularly changing exhibitions
that feature furniture, silver, ceramics and
glass, paintings, prints and maps, tools and
weapons, numismatics, musical instruments,
textiles and much more. The collection has
many strengths, including the world’s largest
body of early Southern furniture, nationally
important assemblages of English silver and
pewter, a vast array of 18th-century clothing
and textiles, and one of the most complete
bodies of British ceramics outside England.
Award-winning installations of these and
other materials provide abundant context
for the rich menu of historical, political
and cultural programs offered daily in the
contiguous Historic Area.
Now located under the same roof as the
DeWitt Wallace Museum, The Abby Aldrich
Rockefeller Folk Art Museum was our
nation’s first institution dedicated solely to
the preservation and exhibition of American
folk art. John D. Rockefeller, Jr. established
the Folk Art Museum in 1957 in memory
of his wife,
Abby, and her
leading role in the
appreciation and
study of American
folk art. Mrs.
Rockefeller gave
the core collection
of 424 objects
to the Colonial
Williamsburg
Foundation in Folk Art Quilt
1939. Today the
collection of more than 5,000 pieces of
American folk art includes works dating from
the 1720s to the present.
The Folk Art Museum moved from its
original location to enlarged quarters adjacent
to the DeWitt Wallace Museum in 2007.
Capacious galleries in the new facility host
changing exhibitions of folk paintings,
drawings, furniture, ceramics, whirligigs,
weathervanes, carvings, toys, quilts,
needlework, textiles, musical instruments,
and other works representing the diverse
cultural traditions and geographical regions
of the nation.
The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg
are open every day of the year and offer
specialized gallery tours and a host of
programs for adults, young people, and
families. Among regular offerings are “Teen
Takes: A New Angle on Art,” an audio tour
produced by teens for their peers. Handson
family activities relate to museum
experiences. “Magical World” explores
the world of art through the eyes of a
conservator by alternating hands-on activities
and a teaching component to reveal how
interconnected science and art truly are. A
large Education Studio makes a wide range of
such discovery learning possible.
Throughout the year, the Hennage
Auditorium hosts speakers, performers
and concerts that enrich experiences in
the museum and in the Historic Area. The
Foundation brings scholars in many fields for
symposia on topics exploring material culture
of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.
BINGLEY’S CORNER SPAWNED
BENSCHOTEN & CARTER INSURANCE AGENCY
THE OLDEST FAMILY INSURANCE BUSINESS
IN THE HISTORIC TRIANGLE
Benschoten & Carter Insurance
Agency is the oldest family
insurance business in the Historic
Triangle. The original office was
located on Duke of Gloucester
Street above where the Trellis
restaurant now stands.
The business began with two
brothers from West Point, Brantley
and Horace Henderson. In 1955
Dick Benschoten bought the
business from them and, along
with four other investors, started
the Queens Lake Development Co.
This entailed the development and
sale of close to 500 acres. In 1959,
Benschoten decided to make this his
full-time commitment.
He sold shares of the insurance
agency to James D. (Jim) Carter III. A
Washington and Lee graduate and William
and Mary Law School graduate, Jim
was working for Aetna as a field rep in
Richmond at the time and would call on Mr.
Benschoten as part of his employment. They
joined hands, with Jim running the insurance
business and Benschoten selling lots in
Queens Lake.
In 1962 John Richmond (Jack) Carter
graduated from the College of William
and Mary and was hired to manage the
life insurance department. In 1965 Dick
Benschoten died, and the business was
owned going forward by the two brothers,
Jim and Jack Carter. Jack ran the personal
lines insurance and sold life insurance, and
Benschoten & Carter Insurance Agency 1991
Lee Carter, Jack Carter, Jim Carter, Cathy Carter Huff
Jim sold commercial insurance. In addition,
Jim developed Queens Lake by building
the infrastructure and selling the lots, until
1985 when Queens Lake was completely
developed. Over the years Jim continued the
real estate business, developing Longhill Gate
and Turners Neck subdivisions.
In 1965 the office moved to 645
Penniman Road, in the area then known as
Bingley’s Corner. (Read more on pages 20-21
about this exciting corner in Williamsburg.)
Jim and Jack served the community with
the desire to offer the best service with
multiple lines of insurance products. As
an independent agency, they could offer
competitive rates for a variety of individuals
and businesses. A prospective client could
purchase auto, home, life, and commercial
insurance at one
location.
With multiple
company affiliations,
Benschoten & Carter
could price shop
renewals, keeping clients
satisfied, who, in turn,
would refer their friends
and family. Over the
years almost 90 percent
of new accounts have
come from word of
mouth, with service
and competitive pricing
always the company’s
top priority.
In 1985 Cathy Carter Huff, Jack’s daughter
and a graduate of VCU, joined the business.
She was followed in 1986 by Jim’s son, Lee
Carter, a graduate of JMU. They came in as
producers, selling all lines of insurance. Both
worked hard to learn the insurance business,
and each received the designation of Certified
Insurance Counselor offered through the
PIA, a national insurance organization
dedicated to educating and empowering
insurance agents.
Cathy and Lee were also
licensed in real estate,
and for many years
Benschoten & Carter
was known for selling
insurance and real estate.
Eventually Jim, the head
real estate broker, retired,
ending decades of the
combined services.
Today, Benschoten &
Carter Insurance Agency
is a thriving independent
insurance agency, run
by Lee Carter and Cathy
Carter Huff. Jim Carter is
Lee Carter,
Cathy Carter
Huff
retired, and Jack is deceased.
The staff includes commercial and personal
lines customer service representatives, the
majority of whom speak Spanish, enabling
the company to service the Spanish-speaking
community as well.
As an independent agent, Benschoten &
Carter uses some large and some more regional
carriers. The company has been doing business
with the majority of them for twenty-plus
years, establishing strong relationships and
good claim service.
Benschoten & Carter companies are
A-rated, ranging from Chubb for higher value
homes to Northern Neck for more rural areas.
They also have access to several brokerage
houses for hard-to-place insurance risks. Most
often they want to package the automobile
and the home policy, in order to give the
multi-policy discount. In the commercial lines
they can quote a risk with one or multiple
companies, seeking to get the best fit.
As told by Billy Scruggs, present
owner of Retro’s and The Fife & Drum
Inn (the only downtown Inn in Historic
Williamsburg). Billy grew up around Bingley’s
Corner and tells his story.
In the mid-1930’s to early 40’s, Ellis Bingley
opened Bingley’s Grocery (where Wawa is now
located) on what was to be called Bingley’s
Corner. Ellis and his wife lived in a house
behind the store, now the location of the Animal
Clinic & Wellness Center. Bingley’s had
their own butcher, as did most neighborhood
groceries in those days. Buck, Ellis’ oldest son,
was the butcher. The bologna sandwich was a
big item and I would order a nice thick slice;
Buck would cut it as thick as you wanted. I have
fond memories of those bologna sandwiches served
on white bread.
When I was 12 years old, I delivered the
Richmond Dispatch newspaper. They would drop
off the newspapers at Bingley’s where I would
pick them up for delivery. I remember a stove
back in the corner of the store where the men
would gather on cold days to stay warm and
chat. Oh, those were the days. Ellis served in
World War I, and shared his stories about the
war with many. He died at around 104 years of
age.
In the 1950’s the Rash’s Amoco Service Station
was owned by Mr. Rash, and he had 4 boys
Several businesses that started on Bingley’s
Benschoten & Carter Insurance Agency. They
are the oldest family-owned insurance business
in the Historic Triangle. Rodgers Huff was the
were there as long as I can remember.
Damian’s Citgo Service Station, across the
street from Rash’s Amoco, was another gathering
place where local men talked about anything
and everything going on in Williamsburg. Those
gatherings were some of my fondest memories
at Damians Citgo. Magruder Elementary
School was across the street from Damian’s
Citgo. It was established in the 1950’s and is
still in that location.
Another establishment in the middle of
Penniman Road and Springfield Terrace was
a convenience store called Tippy Toes. They
had the best candy selection, and the jars were
always filled to the top. You could get 5 pieces
of candy for a penny. I loved that place!
We would go to get a 15-cent hot dog and a
banana split at Nottingham’s Pharmacy located
next to Bingley’s Grocery in the 1960’s. They
would have balloons on the wall that you would
choose. A piece of paper was in the balloon that
prosciutto di Parma and a slice of fontina cheese with sage in a white wine sauce. This topped any
veal dish I have ever had. From now on when I want veal, this is the one that I will crave.”
Customer Review: #2- Napoleon
“The Napoleon was delicious. It consists of fresh mixed grilled vegetables with a slice of fresh tomato
and fresh mozzarella cheese sprinkled with extra virgin olive oil. The vegetables were perfectly
cooked and the slice of mozzarella really made the dish pop. I would definitely order this again.”
Customer Review #3- Grilled Shrimp
“I had the Grilled Shrimp. Freshly caught from the gulf, on a bed of sautéed spinach and drizzled
with lemon vinaigrette. The shrimp tasted very fresh and was cooked to perfection. With the lemon
vinaigrette it really gave it a great flavor. I will get this again when I come back.”
Customer Review #4 - Seafood Risotto
“The Creamy Seafood Risotto is made with carnaroli rice with wild caught gulf shrimp, fresh
scallops and local lump of crab meat. It was the best Risotto I have ever had. The scallops were
cooked to perfection and the crab meat was succulent. The proportions left me with enough to take
home with me, and the prices are great. I would recommend this restaurant to all of my friends.
We will be coming back.”
Customer Review #5 - Cannoli and Cappuccino
“Well, you can’t go to an Italian restaurant without having a Cannoli with a frothy hot cappuccino.
It’s a pastry filled with sweetened delicious ricotta cheese and chocolate chips. I’ve had many before,
but the pastries made here have a crisp, fresh taste to them. I’ll be ordering a few to go.”
Deciding to open a smokehouse was easy,
deciding on what style of BBQ was the
hard part. I decided to go with the purest
Texas BBQ.
The process
is preparing
and slowly
smoking
the
meats for
maximum
tenderness
and flavor. At Rocco’s we smoke all our
meats in custom-built smokers. We use our
dry rub, oak and hickory woods for flavor.
And, of course, we make three great BBQ
sauces.
In addition to our Smokehouse menu we
offer a selection of steak, seafood and chicken
have to try our rib
or what about a crab
cake? How about a
great Reuben? We
also offer a vast kid’s
menu, from chicken fingers and mac and
cheese to steaks and ribs. Rocco’s offers a full
bar with a selection of local draft beers and
Customer Review: #1 Yellow Tail Red Snapper
“I never thought I would order a whole fish, but I decided to order the Yellow Tail Red
Snapper. It’s the whole cooked fish served on a bed of lemon and ginger-soaked rice and cherry
and sunburst tomatoes. It was an absolute flavor burst. The fish fell right off of the bone and
blended well with the rice, and the presentation was amazing. I’m glad I decided to try it. I
would recommend this place to anyone. Great food, great service.”
What Our Customers Are Saying......
Customer Review: #2 Ahi Tower
“I started with the Ahi Tower. It’s a tower of Ahi sushi, crab meat, avocado, papaya, and
habanero sauce served with homemade chips. The crab and papaya give it a sweet taste while the
Ahi and habanero sauce make for a perfect balance. I would definitely order this again and again.”
Customer Review: #3 Strawberry Shortcake
“Strawberry Shortcake is a common dessert, but I’ve never seen it made this way. It was served
on a homemade biscuit and consisted of strawberry puree, strawberries, whipped cream, ice
cream, and chocolate drizzle. I never would have thought to use a biscuit, but it was more than
delicious.”
Chef Ken Brown grew up with a love of
seafood. As a young boy he developed a love
of fishing in freshwater and saltwater and also
enjoyed crabbing with his family.
He discovered his niche for cooking as
a teenager in a local family-owned Italian
restaurant in upstate New York. While
working as a prep cook there, Ken decided to
pursue culinary arts as a career.
He began his culinary career by attending
the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde
Park, N.Y., and interning at the Four Seasons
Hotel in London. After his internship, he
began work at the Kingsmill Country Club.
Chef Ken has also worked at Kiln Creek,
Deer Run Golf Course, Austin Creek
CORNER CUPBOARD HAS OVER
34 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
WITH AMISH FURNITURE
32 | Historic Triangle What’s Up ? Magazine August/September 2014
Corner Cupboard Furniture Company
deals with many Amish woodworking shops
throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana.
This furniture is handcrafted of solid wood
and is made to order in these shops, not
built on an assembly line or in a factory. It is
made one piece at a time, which allows for
customization that typical furniture stores can’t
offer.
The company buys the furniture unfinished,
DIRECT from the Amish and some
Mennonites. There are no wholesalers or
distributors involved. Buying direct from these
shops allows Corner Cupboard to sell highquality
furniture at surprisingly low prices.
The furniture is transported from the many
workshops to one of their Amish finishers
where it is hand sanded to perfection, stained,
and has a catalyzed varnish applied for a
consistent, satin-smooth, protective finish.
The truck driver then goes back to the finisher,
inspects the furniture, and blanket wraps
it all to be taken back to Corner Cupboard
Furniture Inc. This is a complicated process,
but it has some great advantages.
The furniture is of the highest quality and
handcrafted in the USA, which allows
for a huge variety of combinations for
the customer. There are approximately
60 different chairs and hundreds of table
styles with custom shapes, sizes, legs,
species of wood, and color choices, as well
as approximately 25 bed styles with lots of
matching pieces that can be customized.
Customers can purchase furniture that
fits their specific needs at a very reasonable
price for their homes, and they can create
furniture, built to last a lifetime, that reflects
their personal style and personality. Best of all
they don’t have to settle for what other stores
have in stock or only what manufacturers
have to offer. The upholstered furniture not
only comes in traditional styles and fabrics,
but also in river and nautical styles and
fabrics. Indoor and
outdoor wicker are also
available.
Similar furniture
may be found at a
few other stores, but
it’s typically bought
through middlemen or
distributors at an added
cost.
Corner Cupboard’s
mattresses are made by
Custom Comfort by
Winn. Any mattress can
be customized to fit the
customer’s specific needs
and wants.
Customers will also
find accessories such as 1,000 decorative flags
and Amish-made wrought-iron flag holders,
nautical items, Tervis insulated tumblers, and
more.
If you’re looking for options or choices in
furniture and accessories different than what
you find at other stores, check out Corner
Plum Pudding,
the best of the fest!
That is how our mother described the name
Plum Pudding, noting her Irish and English
heritage. How appropriate! Because truly our
shop is the best of many worlds for us and for
others.
When the
decision was
made to leave
the corporate
life behind
and opt for
a simpler
existence, we
had no idea
what we were getting ourselves into.
Oh, there was a wonderfully executed
business plan in place. The mission, a
small shop that would provide an excellent
place where anyone could find a treasure
at a reasonable price and an honest income
for two sisters, offering an outlet for our
creativity and a simpler vocation. Buying
estates would provide an eclectic array
of goods. New and used items could be
given a bit of love, or be repurposed or
donated, without worrying about an owner’s
apprehension.
That being decided, becoming a
consignment shop would not be the path
taken. High on our list was how to give back
to the community. The choice was to sell
items to benefit local charities, and donate
clothes, furniture, and household goods to
them, and even one-on-one assistance, when
possible.
The stars were aligned, all was right with
the business plan, and away we went. Four
months of refit to create the showroom, and
the doors were open. The hope for a simpler
lifestyle was the first tower to crumble. The
physical work is daunting, the needed hours
are sometimes quite insane and, believe it or
not, even sisters can disagree on occasion.
But would we trade it for a quieter life?
Absolutely not.
The days of physical labor, tons of stress,
hours of research and endless cleaning are
countered by giggling over paperwork and/
or laughing out loud about silly mistakes.
The wonder of so many new friends who
visit regularly for a cookie and a chat and the
thought of finding that diamond in the rough
fuel our imagination. Adding to the everyday
excitement of cultivating friendships and
uncovering treasures, we are especially pleased
to have received a “Best of Williamsburg”
award for 2013.
Meeting people from all over the world
and connecting with customers through the
online store is great. Providing what we can
to local charities in whatever form brings our
fulfillment to full circle. These are the rewards
that were never written in the business plan:
the joys and blessings of working together as
a family, being part of the community, being
creative, and learning every day.
Although the mission statement hasn’t really
changed, our universe is much expanded.
We invite you to visit, maybe find a treasure,
make a friend and, for sure, share a cookie.
The Ohio State University
Triangle Welcomes OSU
Mike Chema and Jim Zinn
By Elizabeth Price
Laughter filled the room as old memories
were being shared by former classmates,
roommates, and fellow alumni. The school
spirit was still very much alive. Jim Zinn,
president of the Ohio State University
Alumni Club of the Historic Triangle,
emceed the night. Jim was proud to present
Mike Chema with the Distinguished Alumni
Award plaque.
Two young women, who currently study
at Ohio State University, were also in
attendance. Leslie Schmidt is following in
her parents’ footsteps by attending OSU. She
is presently studying welding engineering.
Melissa Funk is majoring in psychology.
At the end of the night, there were a couple
of items that were auctioned off to aid in
student scholarships. Signed by Director
Jonathan Waters, the items included an OSU
football, which sold to Dr. Rick Lodwick
for $500, and a beautiful piece of Carmen
Ohio Sheet Music, which sold to Larry and
Suzanne Tingley for $250. Mike and Marji
Chema were hosts for Director Waters.
Comments From Clients
Who Have Had the
Keratin Treatment
Becky: I LOVE
the Keratin blow
out you put in my
hair on Friday. It
has been hot &
humid ... my hair
is still straight! No
frizz! It is amazing.
I still haven’t used
the flat iron since
you put it in.
Becky: Thank
you SO much
for performing
the Keratin
straightening treatment on my hair today! I
absolutely love it, and my hair didn’t frizz one
bit after being outside in all of this rain we
had this afternoon! Soft, silky and frizz free.
Thank you, thank you!
Since 1963,
Premium Pizza with a
Personal Touch
When Jim Grote was a 13-year-old in
Columbus, Ohio, he took a job making
pizzas. By the time he was a sophomore at
Ohio State University, the pizza business had
hooked him for life.
Jim bought that original shop in 1963 for
$1,300, and kept the clever original name – a
play on a Latin phrase that means “to give a
good thing.” It was a perfect way to describe
what would become his three-part mission: to
create a superior product, hire great people,
and promote goodwill in business and the
community.
“When folks arrived to pick up their
pizza, I had them stop by to say ‘hi’ to Nancy
and the kids,” Jim remembers. “It was great, a
home filled with friends and neighbors.”
Today, the family-owned company remains
a favorite
in
Columbus
and well
beyond,
with more
than 150
locations in
six states.
Working
with his daughter, Donatos Chairman Jane
Grote Abell, Jim remains a guiding influence
at the company, making sure his original
values continue to shape everything they do.
Jim’s generosity is about more than the
ample premium pizza toppings, the Edge to
Edge® mantra the restaurants are known for.
It’s also evident in the way they care about
serving their customers the very best pizza,
the way they treat their associates like family,
and the way they always strive to be a good
neighbor and positive community influence.
The result: an incredibly loyal fan base that
just keeps growing.
As the business grew, Jim raised his family
in a home behind that first pizza shop. This
mix of work, friends and family helped define
Donatos’ distinctive culture.
