Capacious galleries in the new facility host changing exhibitions of folk paintings, drawings, furniture, ceramics, whirligigs, weathervanes, carvings, toys, quilts, needlework, textiles, musical instruments, and other works representing the diverse cultural traditions and geographical regions of the nation. The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg are open every day of the year and offer specialized gallery tours and a host of programs for adults, young people, and families. Among regular offerings are “Teen Takes: A New Angle on Art,” an audio tour produced by teens for their peers. Handson family activities relate to museum experiences. “Magical World” explores the world of art through the eyes of a conservator by alternating hands-on activities and a teaching component to reveal how interconnected science and art truly are. A large Education Studio makes a wide range of such discovery learning possible. Throughout the year, the Hennage Auditorium hosts speakers, performers and concerts that enrich experiences in the museum and in the Historic Area. The Foundation brings scholars in many fields for symposia on topics exploring material culture of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Museums Online: The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg offer online access to the collections through eMuseum on Colonial Williamsburg’s website www.history.org/ museums. Images, descriptions, and object histories are available to scholars, historians, collectors, and the general public. In addition to objects currently on view in the museums and historic buildings, eMuseum makes available portions of the collections that are too fragile or light sensitive for frequent exhibition.
