Teaching Kids the Economics of Life

Dear Friend: 

How do you measure the impact of teaching a child to balance a checkbook? 

How can you quantify the value of a student learning to make a profit? How 

can you possibly define the importance of showing a young person how to 

live within a budget? 

JA’s economics of life lessons will keep the adults of the future from 

becoming bankruptcy statistics. The lessons will ensure that young people 

entering the job market have a basic understanding of how to support their 

employers’ goals. Students will also learn business principles that will give 

them the tools they need to start their own businesses. 

JA’s teachings, which are communicated through hands-on, experiential 

learning, will be providing counsel to the young people long after they have 

ventured out on their own. 

This is not just wishful thinking. JA has strong evidence of its program 

impact. A recent pre-post test evaluation study of Chase Finance Park last 

year indicated that 83% of the students improved their scores. 

The best indicator of program success and impact is calculated using what 

is called the “effect size.” The effect size determines whether a program is 

“educationally meaningful” and to what degree. It answers the question: 

How much of an effect did the program have on the participants? Effect 

size scores range from 0 to 1. Programs are usually seen as having a strong 

educational impact if they have an effect size of .50 or greater. 

For the students who participated in Chase Finance Park, the effect 

size was 0.93 which indicates an indisputable educational impact.

JA Teaching Students Skills to Avoid Economic Pitfalls 

Last year was a big year for foreclosures all over 

the United States. Wise money management 

skills have taken a back seat in the pursuit of the 

American Dream. 

But with changes in the economy, the American 

Dream is becoming harder to attain. Based on 

information from RealtyTrac, the United States 

saw 925,986 foreclosures during the first 6 months 

of 2007. More than 30,000 of these were in 

Kentucky and Indiana. 

Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana is continuing 

the quest of teaching kids the economics of life to 

help overcome some of the pitfalls of a fluctuating 

economy. 

Specifically, programs offered at the James 

W. Robinson Junior Achievement Center 

for Freedom of Enterprise (Sam Swope JA 

BizTown and Chase Finance Park) teach 

students how to manage their money, how to 

avoid overwhelming credit card debt, and how to 

succeed in the workplace. 

The local community continues to support this 

effort. New partners at the JA Center include 

Actors Theatre, Hanover College, Papa John’s, the 

Kentucky Society of Certified Public Accountants, 

Spalding University, and Stock Yards Bank. 

School systems are supporting these important 

programs as well… the Jefferson County Public 

School system is in its second year of a four-year 

partnership with Junior Achievement to provide 

the JA experiential programs to all 4th grade and 

7th grade students. The JCPS partnership has 

been greeted positively by students and teachers 

alike with programs receiving a “9” on a 10 point 

approval rating. 

In addition, Southern Indiana leaders have taken 

the initiative to ensure that their young people 

are financially literate. The Harrison County 

Community Foundation has funded JA programs 

for progressively larger groups of Harrison County 

students for several consecutive years. And, One 

Southern Indiana has sponsored every Floyd and 

Clark County 5th grade student at JA BizTown 

thanks to a donation from Diane Fischer of L&D 

Mailmasters, Inc. 

Local students now understand the basic 

economic principles that govern family life. In 

the words of Erin, a local middle school student, 

“Now when I ask for something and my mom 

says ‘no’ because we can’t afford it, I understand 

completely what she means.”

JA Programs 

Junior Achievement prides itself on the progress it is making toward 

the target of reaching children four times during their school years. 

Last year 38,680 students’ lives were changed by JA programs. 

3rd Grade - (Our City®) A city is a place where a lot of people live, 

work, play and go to school. So, JA classroom volunteers help students 

build a city! The students construct paper buildings, map out a city, 

write newspaper articles, plan their own restaurants, and examine why 

banks are important. 

4th or 5th Grade - JA’s innovative new program, JA BizTown, includes 

lessons taught in the classroom by teachers, followed by students’ 

day-long simulation at Sam Swope JA BizTown. During their four 

week journey, students discuss the roles they, as citizens, play in their 

community as workers and consumers and relate these personal roles 

to the free enterprise system. The day at the Town is assisted by parent 

and community volunteers. 

7th or 8th Grade - Another of JA’s new experiential programs, Finance 

Park, entails classroom lessons which culminate with the students’ 

day-long simulation. The learning lab Chase Finance Park teaches 

concepts of personal budgeting. Some of the expenses that students 

include in their personal budget are housing, transportation, utilities, 

savings and charitable giving. Parent and community volunteers assist 

during the students’ day in the Park. 

High School - JA will offer any of its high quality programs to high 

schools, depending on the individual school’s needs. Programs such as 

the innovative JA Titan, Careers with a Purpose, JA Success Skills, 

JA Economics, and JA’s well known Company Program are a few of 

the options taught by JA’s classroom volunteers.

Into the Future… 

Discover JA’s Virtual World 

This spring students will be able to visit the Junior Achievement website 

to play games! (Shhhh, just don’t tell them they are learning at the same 

time.) 

These days it’s very common to see kids in front of a screen – computers, 

Nintendo, Game Boy, and more. JA is taking advantage of kids’ computer 

savvy to help teach the economics of life. 

Students who visit Sam Swope JA BizTown or Chase Finance Park will 

learn about a fun way to reinforce the curriculum. “BizQuiz” and “Fast 

Lane” are the new games being developed to teach work readiness and 

financial literacy skills in a dynamic, entertaining manner. 

Junior Achievement and local 

e-learning specialists at the Halo 

Group developed these games. 

Using graphics appropriate to the 

curriculum and age group, Halo 

Group is creating software for webbased 

games. The games will be 

part of a “virtual” JA World for JA 

BizTown and Finance Park. 

These revolutionary games are available thanks to grants from multiple 

organizations: AT&T Foundation; James Graham Brown Foundation, 

Inc.; National Council on Economic Education; Old National Bank 

Foundation; U.S. Department of Education (Office of Innovation and 

Improvement) and the U.S. Department of Justice (Office of Justice 

Programs and Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention).

JA BizTown or Chase Finance Park to visit JA’s virtual world and

It is the partnership between JA and local volunteers 

that brings JA’s life-changing economics programs to 

life. 

And, it is the corporate sponsors “adopting” a school 

that provides the financial support for materials and 

volunteer training. 

During the 2006-2007 school year, 720 companies 

donated funds to support JA’s award winning 

programs, and 25 companies actually partnered with 

schools to provide JA’s programs. 

E.ON U.S. employee Patsy Allen celebrates a good 

throw during their Chili Bowl event benefiting JA 

students. 

A special bond forms between schools and a 

sponsoring company, and many companies back 

the same schools year after year. Thanks to 

organizations that provide the financial support, JA’s 

in-school programs are free to students and schools 

throughout Kentuckiana. 

Corporate sponsors not only provide the financial 

support for JA programs, but many companies also 

encourage their employees to volunteer to teach JA 

courses. 

Hundreds Bowl for JA 

It’s all for the Kids! 

The Annual Bowling Classic is JA’s largest fundraiser. 

But it’s even more… the Bowling Classic is an 

opportunity for area companies to bowl, mingle 

with co-workers and friends, and celebrate the 

accomplishments of having raised money for JA kids. 

And why shouldn’t they celebrate? Bowling Classic 

participants are helping 40,000 students learn 

about business and finance. During 2007 the JA 

bowlers raised more than $175,000 to help educate 

Kentuckiana children! 

Several local businesses make the Bowling Classic a 

company-wide event in place of the usual corporate 

picnic. Organizations such as Brown-Forman and 

E.ON U.S. have held their own corporate bowl for 

years. 

Participation in the Bowling Classic is a great 

team-building event for any size business, church, 

or civic group. A great example of an ambitious 

and successful Bowling Classic partner is Citigroup 

During the 2006 Bowling Classic, Citigroup had 22 

teams bowling for JA. 

One strong example of a local partnership with JA is 

E.ON U.S. They have been a JA partner for decades. 

The 33 volunteers who helped teach JA programs 

are just one part of the E.ON story. A corporate 

bowling event held for the past 12 years has provided 

much needed funds to support JA’s programs (more 

than $20,000 a year). Three years ago, E.ON U.S. 

sponsored the “Multi-Service Center” storefront in 

JA BizTown. And, 

for several years they 

have sponsored schools,

But, Citigroup wanted to make a BIG impact in 

2007 and went for the gusto by recruiting twice the 

number of teams. With 48 teams, Citigroup raised 

almost $19,000. Their plan for 2008 is to have 52 

teams, so they will fill all of Executive Strike and 

Spare’s lanes!

Volunteers: In the Classroom and at the 

James W. Robinson Center for Freedom of Enterprise 

Junior Achievement is all about connecting caring volunteers with students 

throughout our region. JA volunteers provide children with positive adult 

role models, as they illustrate ways to build self-confidence, develop skills 

and find avenues of success in our free enterprise system. 

Volunteers teach students about our economy, personal money management, 

and business success skills. 

This year more than 2,800 business professionals, parents, retirees and 

college students taught Junior Achievement programs. These volunteers 

used their personal experiences to make the Junior Achievement curricula 

practical, realistic and fun. 

Ways to Get Involved 

1) Teach one of JA’s classic in-school programs to 3rd graders or high 

school students. By donating 45 minutes of time for 5-10 weeks, volunteers 

help JA become a successful bridge between education and business. A 

thorough training prepares volunteers to enter the classroom and teach JA 

programs. 

2) Volunteer for a day in one of JA’s learning labs. Sam Swope JA 

BizTown (for 4th & 5th graders) and Chase Finance Park (for 7th & 

8th grade students)

accounts, balanced 

budgets, commerce and 

paychecks. Experience

first-hand in this fun 

learning atmosphere.

The Impact 

J. Kevin McCurren works with Crums Lane 

Elementary students at the JA Center during 

Entrepreneur Week 2007. Mr. McCurren is 

an executive of several small health service 

companies and a guest speaker during 

EntrepreneurshipWeek USA. 

Through the efforts of our volunteers and sponsors, Junior Achievement of 

Kentuckiana served 38,680 students in Metro Louisville, Southern Indiana, 

and the Louisville surrounding counties during the 2006-2007 school year.
