As the music industry steps up its efforts to combat piracy, UMPG is not only supporting legislative and legal efforts to combat this problem, but our artists and songwriters are speaking out and are featured in the beginning of our news magazine. In the face of weakening mechanical income, UMPG is also aggressively stepping up its sync licensing activity to record results and proactively pursuing other revenue streams, such as ringtones and karaoke licensing. Of course, we're continuing to sign hit acts and are excited by the record-breaking success of artists such as 50 Cent, who as of this writing may be the biggest sales success story of '03, and we congratulate Rondor on the amazing worldwide success of Avril Lavigne. We also still practice that good old art of songplugging, with our songwriters featured on such major releases by Celine Dion, Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, as featured in our Nashville spotlight. Keep a lookout for the launch of our new SynchExpress.com website which is scheduled to launch shortly. It will augment our highly successful new website - www.umusicpub.com, which has already received more than 155,000 unique industry visitors since launching! PIRACY VANESSA CARLTON: "I'm all for getting a taste of something before you buy it, but when it becomes more than a taste and people begin hoarding the entire work, it becomes piracy which results in a system in which artists are not being rewarded for their works. Works which they put everything they have into creating and then working their asses off to support and promote." RIVERS RUTHERFORD: "The average songwriter has to be very fortunate to make any money at all from his craft. Illegal internet downloads significantly reduce the income of people who are not making millions from touring, t-shirt sales etc., but merely trying to make a decent living. Downloading can literally make it impossible for a songwriter to support himself with his craft." TROY VERGES: "Go to your job everyday next week and work. When payday rolls around, tell the boss you only want half of your check. That's what illegal downloading does to artists, musicians, songwriters, and everyone that supports them. It's wrong." LAMONT DOZIER: "The business as we have known it has changed with these various piracy technologies that are taking over the world. I personally have seen my income drastically reduced, and it is frightening to experience…” CARL STURKEN & EVAN ROGERS: “How would you feel if someone came in to your home and began taking everything they wanted that looked cool, and gave you nothing in return. Pretty crazy, right? That's how we feel about the piracy of music.” EVE: "We work really hard.
