SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM<br />
Scope:<br />
<strong>Enrichment</strong> courses will be offered to students of <strong>Moorestown</strong> as well as non-resident students.<br />
Specific information pertaining to course content is included.<br />
Registration:<br />
Registration will be offered via mail, or in person for <strong>Enrichment</strong> courses. The Board of<br />
Education reserves the right to cancel any class with insufficient registration. The community will<br />
be notified of any changes in the class offerings via the district website.<br />
Transportation:<br />
There is no transportation available for the <strong>Enrichment</strong> Program<br />
Code of Behavior:<br />
Rules and regulations for the <strong>Enrichment</strong> Program will be distributed and fully enforced. Students<br />
who refuse to abide by these rules will be given one warning before dismissal from the program.<br />
Students dismissed in such cases will not be entitled to a refund of tuition.<br />
Registration Options: Begins in March and closes on June 7 th .<br />

This Math <strong>Enrichment</strong> course offers a unique blend of enrichment to give students the foundation<br />
needed to be successful in their upcoming math class. Students will develop confidence while<br />
engaging in hands-on learning activities that stimulate interest and growth in the area of<br />
mathematics. After taking this course, students will be ready to hit the ground running in<br />

This enrichment course offers summer opportunities in STEM programming by allowing<br />
students to explore chemistry, mathematics, physics, and engineering in a fun and fabulous<br />
hands-on science camp! Students will make water travel along a string, tie-dye their own tee<br />
shirts, create bubbling lava lamps, make their own bubble gum, and explore a variety of minichallenges<br />
that will leave them wanting more! Additionally, students will work in collaborative<br />
groups on one Master Challenge over the course of the week, incorporating the Laws of Motion.<br />

This enrichment class is an inquiry based, minds-on, hands-on learning experience helping<br />
students engage their minds to help prepare for the challenges of tomorrow. The students will be<br />
making real life connections through engaging activities and cooperative learning. The activities<br />
will focus around utilizing Legos and a computer program to explore robotics engineering.<br />

We will look at picture books and poetry books, talk about writing a good story, find many<br />
different types of poems, and then write our own! You will be busy little authors and illustrators<br />
who will write their very own hard cover books!<br />

This class is for anyone who enjoys technology and music. During this class, the students will<br />
explore the Garage Band App on the iPad, which is a wonderful tool for musical composition<br />
and performance. In addition to virtual instruments, the students will create their own real-time<br />
musical instruments. Both real and virtual instruments will be combined at the end of the<br />
workshop for an exciting live concert for family and friends. Examples of instruments that<br />
students could make: African thumb piano (kalimba), Australian digiridu, drums, maracas, treebranch<br />
tambourine, tube xylophone.<br />

electronic games, there were tons of amazing board games to both teach and occupy one’s sense<br />
of adventure. Learn about board games, consider how they are made, advertised, and played.<br />
Spend part of each course time experiencing new games and enjoy making your own board gameconcept,<br />
board, rules, and box! Fun and Games will be fun for all!<br />

around in some sugar. Come prepared to be creative and hungry.<br />

as a chef, caterer, restaurateur and professional baker. She brings over 30 years of experience in<br />

NJ ASK Language Arts Preparation/Essay Writing (Rising 5 th – 8 th graders)<br />
Session I 8:30 – 12:15<br />
This course is designed for students who are interested in learning specific writing techniques and<br />
strategies that will give them an advantage on the Language Arts portion of the NJ ASK Exam.<br />
By the end of the course, students will be able to write both Persuasive and Explanatory essays<br />
that meet or exceed the highest standards on the NJ Holistic Scoring Rubric, which is used to<br />
assess the formal NJ ASK Exam.<br />

Language Advantage: Learn French to Enhance your Vocabulary (Rising 5 th – 8 th graders)<br />

French and English. Students will participate in a variety of activities as they learn through music,<br />

Fiction Writing Fun (Rising 7 th – 12 th graders)<br />

Games and exercises designed to inspire fiction writers will be the focus of this course. We will<br />
explore how to develop characters and authentic dialogue, ways to begin a story, and how to<br />

create page-turning plots. This will be a fun and engaging experience for writers of all experience<br />
and skill levels. Needed: a notebook, a pen, and your imagination.<br />

Introduction to Metal Casting (Rising 8 th – 12 th graders)<br />

Students will learn how to create small bas-relief sculptures out of clay, create molds, melt metal<br />
until it is liquid and finally pour creating small-scale sculptures. The bas-relief sculptures can be<br />
mounted on back plate for display or even turned into jewelry.<br />

Get Ready, Get Set, Go for Spanish III (Rising 9 th – 12 th graders)<br />

This course is designed to introduce students to Spanish III. Students will review and demonstrate<br />
mastery of grammar concepts learned in Spanish I and Spanish II.<br />

Sketch Class (Rising 9 th – 12 th graders)<br />
Session I 8:30 – 12:15<br />
This class will meet at local spots such as Main Street <strong>Moorestown</strong> to develop the skills necessary<br />
for creating art from observation. If students are considering a career in the visual arts, the ability<br />
to draw from observation will be a pre-requisite skill for most college art programs. We will<br />
learn to use viewfinders and other techniques to achieve accurate proportion and perspectives.<br />
Students will learn how to suggest textures found in nature and build forms from shadows and<br />
highlights. We will also explore various media, such as watercolor, pastels, and charcoal. It is<br />
recommended that students bring a large (larger than 9x12") sketchbook to class, though all<br />
materials will be provided.<br />

This course is designed to engage students’ business and creative mindsets. Students will gain an<br />
invaluable experience with this hands-on approach to understanding the business side of the<br />
fashion world. Students will gain a greater understanding of the fashion industries latest concepts<br />
of manufacturing, mass customization and niche specialization, including trends in globalization<br />
and environmental issues. Students will work in various group settings to create multiple hands on<br />
projects.<br />

This course is designed to review numbers/operations, algebra/functions, geometry/measurement,<br />
and data analysis/statistics/probability in addition to test taking strategies and calculator use.<br />
Students are given practice tests and drills to improve test-taking skills under timed conditions.<br />

Writing the College Admission Essay (Rising 11 th – 12 th graders)<br />

Among the more daunting aspects of the college application process, students often struggle with<br />
the idea of writing about themselves. This course is designed to assist students in understanding<br />
what colleges are looking for in application essays, how to mine their lives for interesting<br />
experiences to use as the basis for essay subjects, and how to avoid the most common pitfalls that<br />
lead to less effective essays.<br />

bring in newspaper and empty paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls, and tissue boxes for paper<br />

Did you know that bubbles turn colors before they pop? Do you love science? Come be a little<br />
scientist and find out what colors bubbles turn, how long they live, and how to make the BEST<br />
bubble! We are going to be doing all sorts of experiments with bubbles! When you finish this<br />
class, you will be a bubble expert and a bubble artist!<br />

Bookmaking with Kids: For the Love of Reading, Writing, and Art (Rising 3 rd – 5 th graders)<br />

A book made by hand is the perfect way to blend one’s artistic expression while highlighting the<br />
craft of writing. The versatility of a single sheet of paper is awe-inspiring. In this course, students<br />
will learn to make several types of book variations including mini books, accordion books, and<br />
more! Students will develop their own stories, poetry, and illustrations as content for their books.<br />
Projects will be accompanied by a story and music during the work sessions.<br />

Exploring French through Cultural Activities (Rising 3 rd – 5 th graders)<br />

This is designed to be a varied approach to the ways that the French culture and language affect<br />
our global experience and provide a delightful emphasis in a variety of ways for the younger<br />
student population. Four days that explore French culture through music, food, games, songs and<br />
activities. We will be creating an art project as well as making something to eat. A culminating<br />
activity will cap the end of the week. We are pleased to announce that a Foreign Exchange<br />

This class will teach you skills to create wonderful food at home. From setting the table to<br />
creating the appetizers and completing the meal with luscious desserts. Join me as we roast,<br />
sauté and bake our way through the kitchen. You will have plenty to take home and share with<br />
your friends and family.<br />

Photography has been used as an art form, a hobby, and as a method of documentation. Learn<br />
about the history of photography, enjoy and study the works of famous photographers, and<br />
discover how photography has been used in journalism since the civil war. We will compare film<br />
versus digital photography; understand how cameras work- and even make our own “camera<br />
obscura” the earliest form of a camera. Say “cheese” and get ready to smile as we learn all about<br />
photography!<br />

Water Rockets & Mousetrap Racecars (Rising 6 th – 8 th graders)<br />

Students enrolled in this enrichment class will build Water Pressure Fired Rockets using mostly<br />
recycled materials. Students will launch their rocket, estimate its top altitude gained and measure<br />
the time it takes for their payload and parachute to make it back safely to the ground.<br />
Students will also create mousetrap racecars for speed out of mostly recycled materials. Students<br />
will also compete in a head-to-head drag race competition with other cars created in class.<br />

An Introduction to American Sign Language (ASL) (Rising 7 th & 8 th graders)<br />
Session II 8:30 – 12:15<br />
This course includes a variety of Sign Language games with a goal of learning a basic<br />
conversational American Sign Language vocabulary and fingerspelling. The use of videos, music,<br />
original skits, and poetry will guide students as they learn about ASL and Deaf Culture. Students<br />
will work in groups, creating their own “Panel of Experts” to share on the final day of the course<br />
what they have learned during the week.<br />

Inspiration and exercises for aspiring poets will abound in this course. We will put pen to paper<br />
with a variety of poetry writing activities meant to awaken our muses. We will also examine and<br />
discuss examples of great poems and watch accomplished poets read their work. Inspiration is<br />
everywhere. Bring a notebook and pen and prepare to discover your voice.<br />

The Language of Chemistry (Chemicals and Reactions) (Rising 8 th – 12 th graders)<br />

This course will prepare students to understand the language of chemistry. Many students find<br />
chemistry to be a very difficult subject. This is due in part to the fact that the process of naming<br />
chemicals is complicated and abstract. This course breaks down that process into smaller<br />
understandable pieces. Real word chemicals are used as examples whenever possible increasing<br />
student understanding and comprehension. This course is recommended for anyone who plans to<br />
take chemistry in the future or has taken chemistry in the past and needs a review before going on<br />
to a higher level. It is also a good course for those who have a natural interest in the world<br />
around them.<br />

Decoding Detectives (Rising 2 nd – 4 th graders)<br />

Decoding is the ability to apply your knowledge of letter sound relationships, including<br />
knowledge of letter patterns to correctly pronounce written words. All reading instruction builds<br />
in the foundation. In Decoding Detectives, students will unlock the clues to syllables, vowels,<br />
vowel teams, and words to improve spelling and reading. Students will apply multi-sensory<br />
strategies to improve overall reading comprehension. Students will have hands-on practice with<br />
Orton Gillingham techniques to reinforce skills. Students will be using their detective skills by<br />
decoding the clues to become successful readers.<br />

Unlocking the Mystery: Fun with Forensic Science (Rising 3 rd – 6 th graders)<br />

In this enrichment course, students will learn about how detectives use forensic science to gather<br />
evidence, answer questions, and solve crimes. Try your hand at deciphering codes, solving<br />
mysteries, and writing code with invisible ink. Learn to document evidence by fingerprinting and<br />
securing a hypothetical crime scene. Experiment with equipment and techniques used by real<br />
detectives to develop your own observation and problem solving skills. Finally, in this STEM<br />
programming course, student will use IPADS and take part in an FBI webquest.<br />

only will you design and construct your own solar oven, but also you will learn about how energy<br />
can help you create delicious treats such as cookies, nachos and cheese, cupcakes, ice cream, and<br />
more! Learn fundamental cooking techniques, understand healthy eating, how temperature<br />
works, the amazing range and technology of cooking appliances, and explore how the sun’s<br />
energy is converted to heat so to cook in an earth friendly “green” way. Most importantly cook,<br />

will also be creative art activities related to dance. Students will color, draw, and design sketches<br />
of sets and costumes. Students must wear appropriate clothing and shoes to class. Ballet shoes,<br />

wilderness areas. Topics covered include; Places to go, what to bring, how to pack, types of<br />
packs, map reading, GPS use, simple meal planning, stoves selection & use, what to do if lost,<br />
how to select and setup a good tent, how to stay dry and warm in bad weather, what to do if you<br />
see a bear and more. While the course does not include a field trip, graduates will be introduced<br />
to local groups & organizations that do run these types of trips.<br />
