Story & photos by: Bob Whitely<br />
[Bob Whitely, Elkton, VA, has own<strong>ed</strong> his ‘73 Series III <strong>sin</strong><strong>ce</strong><br />
new. It’s transport<strong>ed</strong> his fam<strong>ily</strong> and a ton of memories from<br />
Baltimore to his farmstead in Virginia. Here’s his story<br />
–<strong>ed</strong>.]<br />
Wh<strong>en</strong> I earn<strong>ed</strong> my drivers lic<strong>en</strong>se at age 16, my mo<strong>th</strong>er bought<br />
me a ’54 VW Beetle. However, <strong>th</strong>e cars <strong>th</strong>at really caught my<br />
eye were <strong>th</strong>e “beasts” park<strong>ed</strong> outside of <strong>th</strong>e Altmeus Esso<br />
station in K<strong>en</strong><strong>sin</strong>gton, MD, which doubl<strong>ed</strong> as a tiny Land Rover<br />
dealer. My first drive in <strong>th</strong>e Land Rover came 49 years ago,<br />
courtesy of <strong>th</strong>e dealership. They hand<strong>ed</strong> me a sales brochure<br />
which, wi<strong>th</strong> its robust line drawings and clowing accounts of<br />
Rover’s honest and practicality, really grabb<strong>ed</strong> my att<strong>en</strong>tion.<br />
In college in <strong>th</strong>e mid-‘60’s, I drove a milk route and<br />
happ<strong>ily</strong>, one customer own<strong>ed</strong> bo<strong>th</strong> an 88” and a 109.”<br />
I imm<strong>ed</strong>iately nam<strong>ed</strong> his stop “Jungle Wagon” in my route<br />
book. The more I pass<strong>ed</strong> by his Rovers <strong>th</strong>e more <strong>ce</strong>rtain I<br />
became <strong>th</strong>at som<strong>ed</strong>ay, I would own a Land Rover.<br />
My wife, Joe Ann, knew of my obsession (she marri<strong>ed</strong> me<br />
anyway) but did not stop me from visiting European Motors in<br />
Baltimore on a snowy day in <strong>19</strong>73. Staring at me <strong>th</strong>rough<br />
<strong>th</strong>e window was a Marine Blue Land Rover Series III 88”.<br />
During our test drive, I ask<strong>ed</strong> her if please, please, it could<br />
become our da<strong>ily</strong> driver. I rav<strong>ed</strong> about <strong>th</strong>e fun we’d have<br />
four-wheeling over mountain and shore, and carefully omitt<strong>ed</strong><br />
<strong>th</strong>e stuff like low gas mileage and stiff, unyielding susp<strong>en</strong>sion.<br />
“You have want<strong>ed</strong> a Rover for so long, so let’s buy it,” she said.<br />
So on February 13, <strong>19</strong>73, I gave <strong>th</strong>e salesman $5,013.17,<br />
fulfilling my dream of Land Rover ownership. Mine came wi<strong>th</strong><br />
most every Series III<br />
option; not all prov<strong>ed</strong><br />
very wor<strong>th</strong>while.<br />
It took me only 10<br />
blocks of city driving to<br />
demonstrate <strong>th</strong>e futility<br />
of list<strong>en</strong>ing to <strong>th</strong>e radio<br />
while <strong>th</strong>e Rover was<br />
underway. A few mon<strong>th</strong>s<br />
later, I found <strong>th</strong>e whitewall<br />
tires off<strong>en</strong>sive to my<br />
aes<strong>th</strong>etic and revers<strong>ed</strong><br />
<strong>th</strong>em on <strong>th</strong>e rims. The<br />
folding side steps seem<strong>ed</strong> to catch off road obstacles. Oh yes,<br />
I realiz<strong>ed</strong> my priz<strong>ed</strong> telescope would only fit in <strong>th</strong>e car if I cut<br />
a hole <strong>th</strong>rough <strong>th</strong>e bulkhead behind <strong>th</strong>e seats.<br />
The Series III Rover came wi<strong>th</strong> <strong>th</strong>e US-requir<strong>ed</strong> “safety<br />
dash” and <strong>th</strong>us, restrict<strong>ed</strong> airflow from <strong>th</strong>e scuttle v<strong>en</strong>ts. So I<br />
cut <strong>th</strong>rough <strong>th</strong>e British Leyland-design<strong>ed</strong> air v<strong>en</strong>ts to mimic <strong>th</strong>e<br />
