Letters tothe EditorDear Rovers North,Thank you for your generous contribution to SCARR IIin May, 2005. The event, held at the BarnwellMountain Recreation Area just outside of Gilmer, was ahuge success! East Texas was dry this year but morethat 107 guests attended with 70 vehicles taking to thetrails. Club members came from Dallas, Houston, SanAntonio and Shreveport, LA. Land Rover North Americahosted the rookie run, dinner was provided by theTexas Rovers Cook and the sponsor raffle was a hugesuccess. The club was able to provide a donation tothe Ross Mabey family.Thank you again for your participation. Be sureto mark your calendars for May 2006.The BritishInvasion XV15 Years andCountingBy Jeffrey AronsonNaturally, the week in September preceding theBritish Invasion in Stowe, VT, was stunning, warm and dry. Only as the event weekend camenear did the rain and fog set in, assuring a celebratoryweekend with the requisite Britishweather. The drive from Maine to Vermont in my’66 Series II-A 88” started later than I wantedin such miserable weather. When I left work forthe 6 hour drive to Stowe, it had at leaststopped pouring, such that I could leave therear window of my soft top rolled up to enjoythe chilly fresh air. I marveled at how dry theinterior of the car remained, despite the weather. For two hours I drove in blissful ignoranceuntil I rested by arm over the bulkhead behindChristopher PullenSCARR II ChairpersonTexas Rovers[Congratulations on a great event. Everything, from my sea bagwith my clothes to the fluids container in therear, was quite wet. Naturally, when I discoveredthis “oops” moment, it began to pour andI had to drive nearly 20 miles further beforestopping for gas under a shelter. Then, I couldroll down the rear window.Crossing Maine east to west is sort of“Blueberry Hill”; crossing New Hampshire is“Mountain so High, Valley so Low.” By the timeI entered the Mt. Washington Valley and theWhite Mountain National Forest along Rte. 2,the clouds had coalesced and seemed ready toopen up with a fine storm – you know, Bulwer-Lytton’s “dark and stormy night.” Just as thedusk turned to dark, I passed by Mt. The remaining 3 hours of travel, inthe fog and mist and rain on two lane roads, became a lot more bearable after that moment. When I bought my Series II-A in late 1990,I had just missed the very first British Invasionin Stowe, Vermont. in a valley alongside the famous mountain, its farms and fields contain classically NewEngland and Victorian buildings. TheMountain Road, VT Route 108, provides aperfect sports car drive of twists and turns.Echoes off the sides of the hills and themountain provide aural delight.Over the years, the presence of LandRovers has caused the organizers to “harrumph.”While Jaguar, Austin Healy andMorgan owners wipe the finish wax off theircars and run dental floss to clean out thetire treads, Land Rover owners tended tocollect the mud taken off the show cars. Formany sports car enthusiasts, Land Roverswere the “Uncle Bucks” of the British carworld. They were great for a laugh; few willforget the years of Land Rover polo, trialscourses, Rovers North trail rides, or theinfamous marque tug of wars with the Miniowners. With the current site used by theInvasion organizers, there’s no room forsuch minor hooliganism. Still, the BI XVwas a delightful weekend. The dampweather assured a nice pool of mud at theentrance to the field; while MG’s dancedaround the standing water and muddypaths, the Land Rovers sought them out.Around 50 Land Rovers, from Series I’s –III’s through Range Rover Classics andeven a Range Rover Sport [who arrangedfor that?!],provided the requisite eye-candy to breakthrough the boredom of perfectly restoredTriumphs, Singers and Rileys.Wondrous Series I’s, 80” and 86”,were a delight to see. That seat has yet to be washed, according to theowner. Ian Jackson, also of New Hampshire, brought hisstunning 1989 Range Rover Classic; it has high mileagebut has clearly received careful maintenance and care. It’sproof that no Range Rover has to deteriorate with age.The Rovers North booth housed the personages ofseveral familiar telephone voices, including MarkLetorney, Shane Westover, Les Parker, Arthur Patsouris andMike Koch. The Rovers North Discovery Series I lookedresplendent, as did Mark Letorney’s spectacular Defender130 Crew Cab with tilt. She doesn't let him have the keys often, but relented whenhe showed the proper appreciation. His mother in law, watching this scene, noted that "he didn’t even getdown on his knees when he proposed to her!"Page 9

Robison onRoversTips for WinterWelcome to the Ninth installment of Robison on Rovers in the Rovers North News. Many of you have read my posts on the Rovers North and DiscoWeb bulletin boards, and some have correspondedwith me on various topics. For those who don’t know me – I manage J E Robison Service – on theweb at www.robisonservice.com – an independent Land Rover specialist shop in Springfield, Massachusetts.I’ve worked continuously with Land Rovers since their re-introduction to North America some fifteen yearsago. In my column, I can answer your questions at greater length than is possible on the bulletin boards. Each issue, I will take on a few of the interesting questions I receive or will address a topic of interest to LandRover owners.I am a longtime Land Rover owner. I’ve had many Land Rovers over the years, and currently have a 2000Range Rover P38A, a 1996 Discovery I, and a 1966 Series. My father has a 1995 Range Rover Classic, and mybrother has a 2003 Discovery II. So we’re a Land Rover family. If you have questions or issues you’d like discussed email: robison@robisonservice.com________ ________Welcome to the fall edition of Robison on Rovers. As Iwrite this the leaves are beginning to turn and thenights are getting cold once again. I know you're hopingfor some witticism from me about how this relatesto Land Rovers, but it doesn't. For me, fall in NewEngland is always heralded by the country fairs. That'swhere I've been spending my weekends this August andSeptember. Up near Rovers North, I attended theChamplain Valley Exposition. I saw the Village Peopleand KC and the Sunshine Band in their arena . . .remember them? 1977 on the dance floor once again .. . I also attended the Dutchess County Fair inRhinebeck, New York, and saw Roy Clark, from HeeHaw along with a host of other performers. We've gotthe Tunbridge Worlds Fair, the Big E, the Topsfield Fair, and many others to see.Everyone loves a pig race at the fall fairs. And theox pulling competition. The sheep shows. And thetractor displays. And the fair food. Check the eventsarea on the Robison Service web site for photos fromour fall travels.Last weekend the red Robison Service Discoverymade the trip to Stowe for the British Invasion where Ican truthfully report that we did not win a single prize. This weekend I'm meeting the Bay State Rovers for theFall Heritage event near Woodstock, Vermont. Anotherweekend of off road driving with my fifteen-year-oldson. Will he turn it over? Will he sink it in a river? Will he be abducted by aliens? Come back next issuefor all the answers . . .In this issue, I'd like to help prepare you to continueto operate your vehicle through the long darkmonths ahead. It's hard to operate a Land Rover - or any vehiclefor that matter - if you're depressed. And it's easy tobecome depressed when it's cold and dreary all day,and you have to drive to and from work in the dark.Add a few more problems to the mix - laid off fromyour job, running from the law, feeling sick, bookiespressing you to pay up or else, girlfriend just threwyour stuff in the dumpster - well, anyone can getdepressed at times like those. What to do? Some people would join the ForeignLegion. Not me, I hike. For the past two summers, Ihave been walking the trails out here in the Berkshires.I now have snow shoes for winter and I will be continuingthis right through the darkest months of winter.Like any other couch potato from the city, I becameexhausted just dragging myself up and down a fewmiles of hills when I started out. But today, I am 25pounds lighter, much stronger, and I can carry my 40-pound pack all day. The health benefits of this areremarkable. My depression lifts. My asthma has largelyvanished. I am stronger and fitter. You can be too.Give it a try.Now that you are in a suitable frame of mind tooperate a motor vehicle, let's look at some of thethings you can do to make sure your motor vehicleoperates when you want it to.First, make sure you have good tread on yourtires. How much tread is good tread? Well, brand newLand Rover all purpose road tires - such as theMichelin Synchrone - typically have about 1/4 inch oftread depth. Many people say a tire is worn out when1/8 inch of tread remains. Off-road tires will typicallyhave deeper tread when new. Tires like the BFGoodrich Mud Terrain will have 1/2 inch or more treadwhen new and will be worn out at 1/4 inch in ourexperience.Page 12

While we are looking at tires, check yours carefullyfor damage to the sidewalls. Bruises and cuts tothe sidewalls can lead to damage that ends with a suddenblowout, and sudden blowouts often mean suddencrashes. Pay particular attention to the right front tireas it hits curbs and potholes more than the otherthree. Also, slide under the truck and look at theinner sidewalls . . . you can have a tire that looks greatfrom the outside with serious damage on the insideface.Even though the days are still warm, you shouldbe checking your antifreeze protection. The coolantprotection should be good to -20 to -30F, even if itdoesn't get that cold where you live. Your cooling systemworks best with the correct mix of coolant andclean water. The mix is spot-on if you are protected to-30. Too strong of an antifreeze concentration reducescooling system efficiency, as does a weak concentration. So try and have it just right wherever you live. Some Land Rover products use the traditionalgreen antifreeze, while others use the orange coloredDex-cool. Don't mix coolants. Doing so can causesediments to form and the result could be a cloggedradiator.Dex-cool is used in Bosch engine Rovers - thelate 1999 and newer P38A and the Discovery II models,as do all Freelanders. The New Range Rover usesAFC coolant, also known as BMW Blue. All older LandRovers use the traditional green ethylene glycolcoolant.Don't let your Rover run low on coolant, becauseexcess air in the system leads to formation of radiatorcloggingsediment. That means you should fix leaks ifyou have them, and keep the system filled to the properlevel. There has been a lot of discussion on Internetforums lately regarding the benefits of synthetic air foryour Rover's tires. Some people think you need thinnerair for winter, just as people use thinner oil forwinter. Actually, though, you want less reactive air, notthinner air; in any kind of weather. You may think this is a joke, but it's not.Actually, we are not using "air" at all. We are usingnitrogen, a component of air. Nitrogen is a dry,non-reactive gas used to inflate airplane tires, off-roadtruck tires, military vehicle tires, and race car tires forimproved performance. Why? Because the oxygen inair leaks out the tire wall more rapidly than nitrogen.Oxygen also attacks (oxidizes) the rubber compoundsin the tire. Dry nitrogen will reduce rubber tire deteriorationand prevent auto-ignition of an overheatedrace car or truck tire. It will help the tire to run coolerand last longer.Nitrogen can be bought in high pressure tanks orit can be made by special compressors. Ask for it thenext time you inflate tires. It's tasty.Another favorite topic . . . oil for winter. As regularreaders know, I prefer synthetics. Our experiencehas shown that all but the most whipped and worn-outold Land Rovers will perform well using Mobil 10-40or 5-30 extended life oil. These oils will do a greatjob of keeping the inside of the engine clean, aid incold weather starting, and they will not leak muchmore than 20-50 synthetics.I suggest you check your battery, and replace itbefore it strands you. There are two ways to do this. The technical way is to find someone with one of thenew electronic battery testers. These testers can accuratelydetermine a battery's condition in a fewmoments. The second, and more cautious way, is toreplace the battery if it's more than three years old. Many Land Rovers have Interstate batteries. AllInterstate batteries are marked with a date code, stamped somewhere near the top of the case. It's a 3-figure code, like W3A. The middle number - 3 in thiscase - is the year of manufacture. I suggest replacingany battery that shows a 9, 0, or 1 in this positionbecause it's living on borrowed time.I will close with one more thought - fuel economy. With all the talk of hurricanes and $5/gallon gasprices, there is a lot of interest in reducing fuel costsfor Land Rovers. If you have a 1996 or newer Rover, I stronglysuggest you continue to buy premium fuel, eventhough it costs more. Post-1995 Land Rovers thatburn regular are a lot more likely to experience stickingor burnt valves. I've seen this time and again inour service department. Saving fifteen cents a gallon isa bad deal if it leads to a $2,500 engine repair. With an older Rover, you can adjust the timing toget slightly better mileage. Newer Rovers have computercontrolled timing and there is nothing you canchange on them.If you drive on the road, you can improvemileage by increasing the inflation pressure of yourtires, and by running the narrowest and tallest roadtires possible. Heavy off road tires like the MudTerrain are about the worst thing possible for fueleconomy on the road. You will also improve fuel economy by usinglight synthetic fluids in the transmission, transfer case, and front and rear axles. Changing from heavy nonsyntheticlubes to lighter synthetics can yield as muchas a 1 mpg improvement and your powertrain will lastlonger.Vehicle load and drag have a big effect on economy. If you have a roof rack - take it off, unless you areusing it. If you have a load of heavy tools in back, takethem out when you're not actually going to be usingthem. You will be surprised what a difference that canmake.Movie News . . . . Running With Scissors, themovie about our childhood, based upon my brother'sbest-selling book of the same name, has been finished.Sony Pictures is very pleased with the result, as is mybrother. Look for RWS in theatres in 2007.My brother's next book - Possible Side Effects -will be released in early 2007. It contains several storiesabout me and a number of stories about mybrother. You can pre-order signed first editions on theRobison Service web site. You'll have to read the bookto find out what the stories are about. But I'll tell youthis: one of the stories involves a younger me, adepartment store mannequin, and some seriouslybizarre activity; and it does not have a XXX rating.See you next time.________ ________Page 14

Owner to<strong>Enthusiast</strong>by Priscilla Letorney[Priscilla Letorney lives and works in RockportMassachusetts. While she’s never worked at RoversNorth, she’s been a Land Rover enthusiast since hercollege days. Read how brother and sister can getalong through their Land Rovers –ed]There is a reason that Rovers North refers to its customerbase as Land Rover enthusiasts, being an owneris simply not enough. One must appreciate, embraceand truly love their Land Rover. Currently, I am theproud owner of a 2001 Holland & Holland RangeRover, #178 to be exact. This is my third Land Rover, and each one has enhanced my devotion to the pointthat I now vow to always have at least one in my driveway.I was a junior at UVM when I acquired my firstLand Rover. It was a fire engine red Series III 88 thatmy brother Mark had serviced and felt it was both areliable and mechanically sound truck. The goal wasto purchase a vehicle that would get me from myapartment up to campus, all “social activity” locations, and of course various points of destination in Vermont, regardless of the weather. (True enthusiasts know thatLand Rovers are the truck equivalent to U.S. PostalCarriers – “neither rain, snow, sleet, hail, etc.”) Iquickly grew attached to my Rover as it fearlesslydelivered me, and usually several of my friends, anywhereI wanted to go no matter the road conditions orother drivers we encountered en route. Plus, Ibecame the really cool chick with the Land Rover tomost of the guys I met at school. I guess they weretired of dating girls who drove either a Saab or aVolvo. When I graduated I decided to move toWashington DC, and determined that my Land Roverwas too impractical to be a city vehicle. Not to mentionthat parking it on the street in a major city wasnot appealing to me - plus I would be thousands ofmiles away from Rovers North. Fortunately a friendand fellow classmate of mine who was already theproud owner of a 109” purchased my 88”. Years laterat a Rovers North Rally, I saw my previous Series Roverand it had recently survived a beach roll during a hurricaneat Marblehead, MA.Approximately nine years later I found myself inpossession of a garage-parking pass in downtownBoston, a perk that came as the result of a job promotion.I had promised myself that once I had a permanentparking space in the city I could start my searchfor a Range Rover. Six months later I found myself atRovers North choosing between a green or black shortwheelbase Classic. I choose the green one. I felt thatliving in the North End of Boston (known as the Italiansection) and being seen driving an all black RangeRover might give people the wrong impression regardingmy “family connections.” I quickly became enamoredwith my new truck. It got me from Boston toBurlington safely and rather timely during numeroussnowstorms, Nor’easters, and such. I also enjoyeddriving it off-road and sharpening my skills especiallyat the British Invasion held in Stowe every September. Two years ago my profession and residencechanged, creating a 60 mile round trip commuteMonday to Friday. Needless to say, this began toenhance the maintenance schedule of my beloved ‘91Classic. I put my AAA benefits to work more oftenthan I would like to admit, but after you surpass100,000 miles you should expect to have to replacesome major components. I consider myself very fortu-Page 20

nate because I followed my brother Mark’s advice andconverted all fluids to synthetic, installed the NRP stainlesssteel exhaust system, replaced all engine hoseswhen the transmission hose went, and basically becamepro-active regarding the truck maintenance. My plan of action was working; however my vehiclehad reached 163,000 miles, gas prices began toincrease steadily, and its effect on the balance in mybank account – well no need to elaborate on that. Here is where the enthusiasm takes control of the situation. After confirming with my brother Mark that theClassic needs to become a full-time recreational vehicle,I of course start my search for guess what? AnotherLand Rover! For me looking at other brands of automobiles ortrucks was not even considered as an option. My loyalty, appreciation, and enthusiasm as a Land Rover ownergrew stronger with every rainstorm, foggy day, snowstorm, and travel on certain Vermont roads during mudseason. Why would a true New Englander drive anythingelse? The LR3 was out in the US market and I haddecided to test drive one. My plan also included lookingat used Range Rovers. I had met both the SalesManager and General Manager of Land Rover Peabodyhere in MA, so I decided to contact them regarding theLR3 and what they had in stock for pre-owned certifiedRange Rovers. Before actually calling the dealership, I went ontheir website and noticed their inventory list included a2001 Holland & Holland. This listing raised my eyebrows.I remembered when Land Rover introduced thisspecial edition truck, and that it featured severaloptions not standard on other Range Rovers, which wasvery appealing to me. I called and scheduled myappointment. The LR3 is a pristine, state of the artvehicle and certainly exemplifies the quality of LandRover engineering and design however, not enough todissuade me from the Holland & Holland. I immediatelyfelt at home in the driver’s seat of this Range Roverand determined I had found my new British 4 X 4.When I asked who would trade in such a marvelousvehicle, the response I got was, “he purchased a brandnew one.” If I had an extra $80,000 to spend I wouldtoo! The photos accompanying this article display theunique color, interior, and overall style of this particularRover.I am extremely pleased with my Rover #3, andreally enjoy the ride provided by the air suspension. The navigation system is very accurate. I have used myrear fog lamps often while driving through my coastaltown, and I am prepared to keep Rover until it expires.Several weeks ago I was driving on 93 northbound (inthe left lane of course exercising that 4.6HSE engine),and as I gazed over to the southbound traffic, there itwas a jet black and very sleek Range Rover Sport. Ihave discovered my Rover #4.________ ________Page 21

Robison Tech TipsFault Codesby John RobisonWell, here I am back again, a few pages later. If youdidn't get enough in the first column back there in thebeginning, you'll surely get your fill in this one. In thiscolumn I'm going to discuss some common sets offault codes you may encounter in newer Land Roversand what to do about them. The codes we are going to discuss below arefound on 1999 and newer Bosch engine Rovers.Misfires:P0301 (misfire in cyl 1), P306 (misfire in cyl 6). . . and other combinations of two-cylinder misfires. The Bosch engine has two coil packs. Each packhas two coils, each of which fires two cylinders. If youhave two cylinders misfiring, you should always look tosee if the misfiring cylinders share a coil. If so, youprobably have a coil that is breaking down internallywhile under load. It will measure good but it will setmisfires and you may even feel the engine stumbling.Coil pack failure is often a result of coil wiresthat go bad (open circuit) or wires that fall off theplug. This causes an excess voltage in the coil and theinsulation gets blown out. The solution is a new coiland often new wires.Replacement of the coils on a Bosch motor is afairly big job, as is replacement of the wires. Plan on3-4 hours for this job. Remember - you will alwayshave two cylinders (on the same coil winding) missingwhen a coil pack fails. If you have two misfires andthey are on a single coil, you are almost certain tohave a bad coil. If you have two misfires and they areon different coils, you should look at the plugs andwires first, and sticking valves second.A single cylinder misfire code usually points to abad plug wire or plug. Remember, the Bosch enginesuse special Champion platinum plugs. I suggest youstick with these OEM plugs, despite their high costs. We have not had good results with "generic" platinumplugs in these engines.Three or more misfires usually points to stickingvalves, unless you have extreme deterioration of theplug wires or very old plugs. If the plugs and wires areRND290 02 Sensor pg 29good, I'd start with a mechanical test for stickingvalves if 3 or more misfire codes are found.Fuel trim:Here's another common combination of codes:P0171 (system too lean bank A), P0174 (system toolean bank B). P0734 (4th gear ratio monitoring)What does that combination mean? Usually, itmeans the mass air meter has failed. The air metersignals that less air is coming into the engine than isreally there. As a result, the engine ECU cuts back onfuel, and the o2 sensors go to a lean condition, whichsets the 171 and 174 faults. As to fault 734 the powertraincontroller compares the air it thinks is cominginto the engine with the measured shaft speeds in thegearbox, and with a faulty mass air meter it will findthe transmission shaft speeds do not match the predictedspeed based upon how much air the engine issupposedly sucking in. Thus, the transmission gearmonitor fault is set. This combination of three codes is highly accuratein diagnosing a failed mass air meter.Oxygen sensor and catalyst codes:There are a number of oxygen sensor codes youcan get on newer vehicles.Heater circuit faults usually mean the wiringfrom the o2 sensor into the body has been melted anddamaged by contact with the exhaust.O2 sensor stuck lean usually means the engine islean for some reason - such as a bad air meter, a deadinjector, or a vacuum leak.O2 sensor stuck rich usually means the engine isstuck rich for some reason - such as an ignition misfire,a leaky injector, or a sticky valve.Note that the rich and lean faults may occur onboth sides of the motor at once, or they may be limitedto one side. Faults on both sides point to things likethe mass air sensor - parts that affect both sides atonce. Faults that are on one side, tend to point atinjectors or plugs single cylinder malfunctions.O2 sensor slow switching usually means the sensorhas worn out. If you have this code on one sensor, and the sensors are all original, you shouldreplace all 4 because they are at the end of theirservice life.Catalyst efficiency faults mean the catalyst is wornout. In one of my previous columns, I explained howLand Rover engines switch constantly from rich to leanto achieve an average mixture that's in perfect balance. The rich/lean switching is necessary for proper operationof the catalysts. In a working system, the front o2 sensors will besensing rich/lean transitions. The rear o2 sensorsshould be coasting along in the midrange because thecatalyst smooths out the transitions. But when the catalystwears out, the rear o2 sensors begins to followthe front sensors. This increased following of the frontsensor, increments a counter in the engine ecu, andwhen a threshold is crossed, the check engine lightcomes on and a catalyst efficiency fault is recorded. When this happens, a new catalyst is needed, andI suggest installing new o2 sensors at the same time.In the next issue we will look at evaporativeemission codes and other trouble spots with Boschmotors.I'm going to close this column with a short essayon a different by timely subject.Should you sell your Rover if gas costs$5 a gallon? It's a valid question, and for many of us theanswer is probably still no. Here's why:If your Rover gets 15 miles per gallon, and youdrive 15,000 miles a year, fuel for a year could cost$5,000. Driving a Prius will cut that bill to $1,500 - a$3,500 per year savings. But trading cars will come ata steep price. Recent auction results suggest that - ifgas surges to $5 in the near future - trading a 2003Discovery with 45,000 miles for a new Prius will cost$16,000-$20,000. So it will take a while for you toachieve a net savings.History suggests that four years from now thePrius will have a value in the mid-teens, where yourDiscovery would be worth less than half that sum. So,when we factor in that difference in value, the financialbreakeven point moves a bit closer. But there is a big non-financial consideration.Land Rovers, for many of us, offer a way of life.Driving in off-road events, taking our families into thehigh country, carrying us safely though dangerous winterstorms and wading two-foot deep floodwaters. APrius won't do any of those things. And many Discoveries are fitted with 7-passengerseating and driven by parents with 4 kids in the back.A Prius won't do that either. Also, in an accident between a Prius and a LandRover, the Rover is the clear winner. Granted, a Priusis better able to avoid certain kinds of accidents. It isless likely to roll over in high speed maneuvering, andit is more nimble and able to get out of the way. Butits lighter construction makes it unclear, at least to me,which vehicle is safer overall. Personally, I feel moresecure in my Rover and I suspect many of you do, too.If gas gets to five dollars a gallon, I may get asmall car for commuting. But I will certainly be keepingmy Rover for the lifestyle reasons listed above. It's something to ponder as we wait for hurricanenews. See you next time.________ ________Page 25

Behind TheSteeringWheelBy Jeffrey AronsonIn 1948, the Three Stooges made a film called“Pardon My Clutch,” in which the boys try to get anold car running. It reappeared as “Wham, Bam, Slam”“Pardon My CLutch” 1958in 1958. Last August, Peter Jenny, Sheridan, WY,Jacques Jenny, Middlebury, VT, Nick Barton,Washington, ME, and yours truly, Vinalhaven, ME, portrayedMoe, Larry, Curly and Shemp in our unintentionalremake of the film.In our Three Stooges moment, Nick [Shemp]and I [Moe] watched Jacques’ [Curly] Series II startup with a cloud of black smoke out of the exhaust.“Ah,” said Moe knowingly, “We know what to do. Mustbe a Zenith with a warped carb body!”Shemp looked skeptical. “Do you know whatyou’re talking about?” Moe grimaced at him andbarked, “You bet, knucklehead. Get in the Rover.”So Pete [Larry] and Jacques [Curly] followedMoe’s Series II-A down the lanes in their Series II untilthey arrived at Moe’s house. “Just park the car right inthe middle of the lane,” said Moe. “This won’t take aminute. Gimme my tools, Shemp. I’ll pop open thehood and smooth out the carb.”Moe opened the hood against his nose andnearly dropped it on his head before he figured outhow to work the hood brace. Shemp looked at thecarb. “It don’t look like a Zenith.” “Soitainly not,” saidCurley, “It’s a Weber!” Moe grimaced, “there goes thattheory.”Moe rubbed the wrench in his hand thoughtfullyagainst his head, leaving a black shiny stripe of oldmotor oil. “How does a Weber, which runs lean, tossout a cloud of black smoke as if Curly was cookin’dinner?” Adjusting the mixture screw really didn’tchange anything. The car ran rough at idle andsounded at once starved and flooded for fuel.“Ah, ah,” cried Moe, “it’s not the carb at all!”“It’s not?” said Larry.“No, it’s gots to be in the ignitionsomewhere. Let me disassemble the distributor andreset the timing.” He turned to Shemp. “Get me mytools, and make it quick.”Shemp looked skeptical. “Do you know whatyou’re doing?” He dropped the toolbox on Moe’s foot.As Moe hollered, Shemp spent a lot of time looking athis watch and announcing how he had to leave for anappointment real soon – an appointment hours ahead.“Let’s check the timing,” cried Moe! “Shouldn’twe check the points, first?” asked Curly, showing off toLarry that he really did take physics at Middlebury lastyear.“OK, OK,” said Moe, “but make it snappy. Wehaven’t got all day.” “Larry, you take this here crankand turn the engine so it opens the points. I’ll tell youwhen to stop cranking.” Moe unclipped the cap andremoved the rotor. “Here,” he said to Shemp, putthese where we won’t lose them.” Shemp put them onthe fender.Larry bent under the car to insert the crank andhe started to turn it, inch by inch, step by step. Moerested his foot on Larry’s head as he leaned over thedistributor. Each time the engine made a full revolution, the lobes on the distributor cam pressed againstthe points, but theyhardly moved at all.“Hey,knucklehead, didn’tI say to turn thecrank!” “Moe,”protested Larry,“I’m turning, I’mturning. How manytimes am I supposedto do this?”“Until the points open, you dummy!”Moe peered at the points again while Larryturned the crank, getting more and more tired.Suddenly Moe realized the points weren’t opening atall. He took a feeler gauge to the points and couldbarely get a .004 blade in between them.“Hey,” said Moe, rearranging the motor oil in hishair, “what’s going on, here? Moe took the points plateoff the distributor, handing the tiny screws to Larry.“Don’t lose these,” he said. He stepped off the frontbumper.Moe looked hard at the set of points andcompared them to an old set he had in the toolbox.“Curly, where did you get this set of points,” askedMoe?” “NAPA. Why?” “They’re not the right ones, dummy.” He dug out a new set he had bought yearsago from Rovers North. “Look at the difference!”Sure enough, the two sets were not identical at all. Both were red in color but had different shapes intheir metal plates. So Moe went to put the new set onthe car.“Pardon My CLutch” 1958He looked at Larry, leaning on his elbow againstthe fender. “Do something useful. Hand me the screwsand the other pieces,” ordered Moe. “You mean theones I just knocked on the ground with my elbow?”asked Larry. Knocking their heads together, Moe, Larry,Curly and Shemp bent down to pick up the distributorparts and screws. They found most of the items and retrievedreplacements from Moe’s toolbox. But in what orderwere the ground wire, condenser wire and insulatingwashers to go back onto the post? And why was theNAPA post plastic and the Lucas post metal? What didthat mean in terms of grounding?Larry gazed at the clear sky in the setting sun.“What a great day for a repair,” he said. “Usually it’sraining, snowy or cold when something breaks down. This is great!”First Moe, then Curly, insisted they knew the rightorder, but in neither case would the car start. Well, once it wouldn’t start because Moe hadn’t put therotor back on the distributor shaft, but it didn’t seemto matter what the boys did to the distributor parts. The car did not sound as though it was getting a sparkat the points.Again, Larry gazed at the clear sky in the settingsun. “What a great day for a repair,” he said. “Usuallyit’s raining, snowy or cold when something breaksdown. This is great!”Suddenly, a car full of self-important peopledrove up and found Curly’s Rover blocking the lane totheir expensive summer rental. Larry guided themexpertly right onto a rock which grounded out theframe of their fancy car. The driver made a face atLarry, who returned the look and said, “Aw, go on!”Now Shemp has become really nervous aboutgetting a ride to his appointment; Curly’s dead Rover isblocking Moe’s Rover, so Shemp has to borrow a thirdcar to flee the scene.Moe knew a trick. If he turned the ignitionswitch to “on” on his Rover, then he could get a sparkat the points. Why don’t we do the same on Curly’s car?So out came a screwdriver, and Curly turned the ignitionkey. Moe opened the points gently, puts the screwdriveracross the points, but no spark. They ponderedthat question for a while and wondered it the coil wirewas functioning. They swapped out coil wires, but tono avail.Suddenly, Curly asks, “why don’t I have anywarning lights on when I turn the key to on?” Moescoffs, “Curly, what do you know,” and continued tomove a screwdriver around the points, searching for aspark. Suddenly, one appears. “Hey,” cried Curly, “thewarning lights went on!” Curly starts the car and itruns so, so smooth. Moe adjusts the mixture and theidle and the car hums.Once again, Larry gazed at the clear sky in thesetting sun. “What a great day for a repair,” he said.“Usually it’s raining, snowy or cold when somethingbreaks down. This is great!”Moe and Curly go for a quick test drive; Curlyconfirms the car runs better than ever.“How long have you had those NAPA points,” askedMoe? “7 or 8 months,” said Curly. “The car hasn’t runthat well for a while.” “You know,” said Larry, “that’sthe trouble with Land Rovers. They run really wellwhen they’re actually running poorly. Go figure!”Once again, the boys had stretched a 15 minuteshort into a full length movie of slapstick mechanics.Patting each other on the back, Moe watched as Larryand Curly took off down the road. day did Moe learn that the ignition had shorted outonly a half mile later and caused a minor fire behindthe fascia panel. The boys could get home only by tapinga power wire together for the remaining distance. If any Land Rover shops [are you reading this,Robison, East Coast Rover, Cooper Technica, Ship’smechanical?] are looking for skilled mechanics, we’reavailable. In the meantime our next remake will be of“Flat Foot Stooges” [1938] in which the boys are firemen.Catch it at a theater near you.________ ________No matter what your age, you’ll always remember yourfirst car. On my 16 th birthday, I believed that it mightbe possible for me to will my father into purchasing anAustin Healey for me. When I woke up that morning,he handed me a set of keys but to the family’s BuickSpecial, not a car of my own. That did not happenuntil two years and $150 later, when I purchased therustiest Ford Skyliner you could and still have aninspection sticker. A couple of years later I had saved$400 and bought my Morris Minor. Stretching myfinancial skills further enabled me to buy a $600Triumph Spitfire; you can imagine the automotive qualityembodied in a $600 British sports car.Since 2001, I’ve worked around rural highschools in Maine, and even there, student cars aren’tthe junkers that populated school parking lots decadesago. The New York Times cites a national survey highlightedthis trend. Parents in their 40’s reported that72% of them had to purchase their own car – if theyhad one at all - with their own funds when they werestudents. Not surprisingly, 76% of today’s students havetheir own cars but a whopping 51% had their carspurchased for them by their parents. While 82% of thestudents’ cars were used cars, nearly half cost morethan $10,000. Yes, cars cost a lot more today but thatchunk of change still represents a substantial automobile.Much of this generosity arises out of genuineconcerns for the safety of young drivers by their parentsand families. We so expect that cars will cocoonus and shelter us from our worst impulses that weseek to make the car cover for our driving errors.Brian O’Neill, speaking for the Insurance Institute ofHighway Safety, bluntly claimed “when you’re 16 or17, there’s no such thing as a good driver. They’re allbad drivers waiting for an accident to happen.”The average vehicle now remains on the road for15 years, or 170,000 miles. Given the popularity ofLand Rovers in the ‘90’s and 00’s, there’s lots ofopportunity for young drivers to climb aboard an SUV.Can they be safe in the hands of younger drivers?Logically, of course they can, provided that the newdriver receives skilled training in techniques requiredfor an SUV, and providing that the necessary maintenanceto the car have been completed. Range RoverClassics and Discovery Series I’s rely on suspensionbushings at several points for responsive handling.Good springs, strong shocks and quality tires alsoenhance handling. Often, though, older, high mileagecars don’t receive this maintenance and attention – nowonder that, in unskilled hands, they’re less safe thancomparable sedans. When I bought my first [very] used sports carsin the ‘60’s, I knew them to be less intrinsically safethan larger cars. I also knew that their handling, sizeand light weight could work to my advantage for safetyif I used it wisely. The same held true when I boughtmy Series II-A in 1990; that [very] used car requiredme, on road and off road, to become a more highlyskilled driver. Training, in the form of the Rovers NorthOff Road School, helped me enormously, as did thepractical advice from experienced off road friends.Young drivers can learn a great deal from owninga Land Rover, about themselves as drivers, technicians, adventurers and young adults. Learning aboutyour capabilities is just one of the many pleasures ofLand Rover enthusiasm.________ ________Greenpeace activists in England had a satisfying timebreaking into the Solihull factory to protest the manufactureof Range Rovers. Their outrage was expressedagainst people who purchase these “climate destructivecars.”If you’re upset with the Range Rover, considerthe 2006 Hummer lineup. The H1 weighs in a 7,558pounds and $139,771 purchase price. At its porkysize, the EPA considers it too heavy to require amileage rating, but it’s estimated generously at 10 mpg.Its twin fuel tanks, totaling 50 gallons, call for a mere$150 for a fillup. Auto reviewer Jerry Garrett called theH1 a “rolling zip code. Everyone sits in a personalcubicle, isolated from fellow travelers by a center consoleas wide and long as a New Mexico mesa.Communicating requires shouting over the engine androad noise. Once, while driving an H1, I used my cellphoneto call my daughter. She was in the back seat.”Oh, if you want the “Off Road AdventurePackage,” that will be an additional $5,700, please. For that, you get a 12,000 –pound winch, front andrear locking differentials, and better tires.Would something smaller help? The $52,430 H2is a svelte 6,400 pounds and ekes out 12 mpg. It’s usefulfor onroading in front of dance clubs in trashylocales. GM, following the lead of the late, unlamentedBritish Leyland, has badge-engineered a pickup intothe H3. Helpfully, driving the H3 offroad means thatyou can’t see the ends of the car, or determine thewheel paths, without a backup camera – which is notan optional extra. With 220 horsepower luggingaround 4,700 pounds, the H3 achieves 18 mpg andstarts at $37,195. It seats 5, but only 4 in comfort.Oh, yes, the 2006 Range Rover starts at $74,950; the Range Rover Sport begins at $56,750, and theLR3 starts at $38,950. They’re ready to go off roadstock.________ ________Page 31

Still Feuding Afterall These YearsBy Hallie and Nate Vail[Hallie and Nate Vail, a college student inMassachusetts and a recent graduate, respectively, benefited from a wonderful upbringing from theirfather, Bob, a Land Rover buff of the highest order. But, being brother and sister, they still can’t disagreeon much except their love of Land Rovers.Read on and see where you stand –ed.]Hallie VailI’m fond of looking back and recalling the firstmoment the Land Rover infection seeped into the veinsof the Vail’s. After a good deal of persuasion from afamily friend, my father looked into buying an oldseries Rover. In the mid 1990’s I recall finding myselfin someone’s garage looking at what used to be aseries 88” Land Rover. At the time, I couldn’t tell if Iwas looking at a car or a glorified lawn mower. Therewasn’t much left of it, but my father was enthusiasticenough to take the wreck. It surprisingly ran as it was,yet the frame was completely rusted out and mostevery part needed repair. After months, well I shouldn’t lie, years had goneby my father got it road-worthy. With a new light tanpaint job (done by hand, I should say) and a newframe, we tested its reputation. Trips to Rangeleybecame more frequent and exhilarating. Our rustictruck not only took us places we’d never been, it alsobrought the curse of the infection alive. We now knowyou can’t make it there from here in one piece. I can’trecall all the problems we’ve faced, but everythingfrom water pump failure to engine problems havestruck us along the way. Now, almost 10 years later, it’s sickening howmany Rovers accompany our home. While several arewrecked and abused Nate and I are able to gloat aboutour own Landys. His ‘96 discovery and my ‘93 RangeRover get us from point A to B, and also turn someheads while getting there; though I must explain to youthat owning a Range Rover has its perks over theDiscovery. My first Rover came along a few weeks beforewinter romp in ‘04. My father ran into it on the side ofthe road for sale. They say that it took a bad tank ofgas and the injectors seized. Though it seemed aregrettable buy, my ingenious father (brownie points)was able to have it up and running by the time Iarrived home for summer. Shortly thereafter, the black’92 Range Rover was outfitted with a lift fromBWOverland and Trxus tires. Nate’s green Disco hadyet to become a part of the family at this point, so Imade sure to rev my engine loud enough when he’dwalk by or park in the way of our frontdoor to make it known what I drove;brother-sister love must be shown at alltimes you know.Much to my dismay, a fewweeks past and he was graced with aclean Disco. I quickly had to size up ourtrucks. While at this point in time I could make a cleardecision on who had the better truck, it’s much simplernow; now that I have two Range Rovers to pickfrom. I hate to admit it, but the black beauty justwouldn’t make the trips to and from school. Theengine has yet to make a full recovery from being inthe dumps and unending oil leaks lessen the chancesof successful highway driving. I felt useless this pastMaine Winter Romp when my father had to radio in tome on a constant basis to make sure my Rangie couldkeep up with his Series 109” [!] on the highway. WhileNate’s Disco is a few years younger, my white Classicout-handles his on the highway. The Range Rover easespast 75 mph [hypothetically speaking, of course]while his begins to feel as though it may fall off itsframe. The Range Rover also isn’t as top heavy andmaking abrupt turns is a possibility even with a lift. Inthe early 1990’s Range Rover understood luxury. Whilemine is quite bare compared to the technology there isin recent years, the seats hug your body and give youperfect relaxed posture. The Disco, on the other, handstrains your lower back and constantly pushes yourhead forward. The Range Rover is made to loosen upthe driver while a Discovery tends to have the traditionaluncomfortable Land Rover approach to the interior.Though the interior and handling of the RangeRover may outdo the Discovery, I must say I cannotspeak too badly of a fellow Land Rover. Off road, bothhave great capabilities and have equal low rangepower. I’m grateful Nate and I are able to own twostrong Land Rovers which maneuver excellently offroad. I feel I was careful enough not to bash him toohard, he is the older sibling and I still get in trouble ifI tease or ridicule his ways.________ ________Nate VailRi•val / rí’ vl/ n. 1. a person competing withanother for the same thing. In the case of my sister Hallie and myself thatwould be the competition for owning the perfect LandRover. Allow me to discuss why we own (and hopefullydrive) Land Rovers and why my Disco I is superior toher Range Rover Classic(s).I love Land Rovers. I have since I knowingly sawmy first when I was a wee lad of about thirteen. Mydad ended up buying that same ole ’73 and still ownsit to this day. He gave it to me for a daily driver in highschool and it’s now currently retired, torn down to theframe, yielding a few parts to dad’s red 109 which youmay have seen at events over the past five years. Therehas been some ongoing Land Rover project at the Vaileresidence for the past decade. But, I’m willing to bet ahealthy number of you readers have had various LandRover projects going on even longer. Most of us ownerscan agree: if you got the money you ain’t got thetime, if you got the time you ain’t got the money. So what makes a Land Rover so great, why drivean old Rover when you can buy a two door foreignspec, saving money on gas and driving 200,000 mileswithout a problem? Hah, what a stupid question! ALand Rover is a unique commodity that has a rich heritage.I drive one because they turn heads. It’s a vehicleto take pride in. You’ve got to stand out in the seaof mediocrity. Most importantly, a Land Rover is themost versatile vehicle on the planet!I am convinced that I have worked my LandRover Discovery to be the vehicle to best suit me, mylifestyle, and my limited recent college grad budget. We’ll start from the top. The buildup of my ’96Discovery started out primitive in the summer of ’04.For starters, the foot wells had rust holes the size offootballs and the previous owner had enough extradead-end audio wiring to power my old townhouse atcollege. After welding patches, tracing wires, andcleaning up the truck, it was time to add some morepleasurable modifications. The current up to date mods worth mentioningconsist of a three inch lift, 33 inch Swampers, SafetyDevices, roof rack, ARB front bumper, and aFlowmaster catback exhaust (I’m still trying to stealone of my dad’s winches – please don’t print this!).I like my Disco better than my sister’s twoClassics because I’ve got the best of both worlds, civilizationand wilderness, with just one Rover. My truckcan handle tough trails and can handle lengthy tripson the pavement. Believe me I’ve tested her out onmany long rides. I went to college four hours away inVermont. My girlfriend lives three hours away inMassachusetts. I broke down only twice in the pastyear; I call that successful for a high mile daily driverRover. My sister informs you all that my truck can’thandle on the highway, I think her experience is aresult of the operator, not the machine. Big brothersknow more, anyway.Let’s move on to some other perks from drivingmy Disco. I’m a type of person who likes to keepthings under my control. That’s why I’ve got an R3805-speed manual transmission. I do believe that theClassic never gave that option for NAS trucks. Althoughnearly bulletproof, I think the automatic ZF shifts tooearly. My sister hates to admit, but as a likely result ofearly shifting, I blew her road Rangie off the line at theNew Hampshire Hampton tolls. In addition, I’ve gotseating for seven people, with A/C vents for every seat!Last fall at school I took six of my buddies on a set ofdirt bike trails, since the Rover was narrow enough tonavigate it. As you all know, from time to time you gettemporarily stuck. With the assistance of my six passengers, they’re able to push me out of an obstaclewith ease. And finally, for my last perk, the back seathas plenty of headroom.I’m very pleased with my Disco. It looksreal sharp and sounds real mean. Granted, I do likeHallie’s Rangies, whenever I need to travel to Boston Iborrow her “Road Rover” so I can actually fit in aparking garage (one drawback to adding on my SDroof rack). At any rate, I wouldn’t trade my Disco foreither of her two Classics. It’s all about outfitting yourown vehicle to your own needs.[Note – the Editor calls this battle a tie.]________ ________Page 32

The “Go AnywhereVehicle”by Matt MichaelsMy wife's family has lived in Jefferson Parish andSoutheast Louisiana since the turn of the century –having immigrated from Italy (a few via Honduras). As Hurricane Katrina barreled toward the New Orleansarea and it appeared the doomsday scenario was goingto play out, my wife's grandparents, aunts, and otherassorted relatives migrated to Baton Rouge and otherlocales north. Luckily they were all able to get out, prior to the Hurricane hitting the coast. After Katrina swept through we were relieved thatnone of the levies had broken on the Jefferson Parishside (they live 7 blocks from Lake Pontchatrain),although one relative was to the East of the 17th streetcanal and her house was more or less under-water.We were trying to get as much information about hergrandparent's house in Metairie as possible, but wequickly learned that the news was unable to provideaccurate/timely information, the Jefferson Parish Officeof Emergency Management changed their stories every15 minutes. Soon afterwards, we were able to accesssome satellite photos and were able to see that all ofthe trees were blown down in the front yard, the canalon their street was at normal levels. The only sign offlooding was the reflection from the mud in the streets. At about that time, we decided we were going toget into Jefferson Parish to salvage what we could, andbegin the process of cleaning out. Again, the news wasreporting no one could get into Jefferson Parish, noone was allowed, it wasn't safe, we would be consideredlooters, etc. At 86, my wife's grandparents werein no shape to startrebuilding – so the decisionwas made MondaySeptember 5th to get intoMetairie. My Father-in-Lawand I loaded up theDefender (chainsaws, gasoline, recovery gear, potable water, tools, and agenerator), got our immunizations updated, and headedout. The drive to Baton Rouge was uneventful, wepassed several military convoys from Ft. Hood (theDefender was much faster than fully loaded Humvees). The mounting recovery effort was a sight to see. Inspite of the news reporting the gasoline shortages inBaton Rouge we were able to fill up, and still saw gasstations with fuel along Airline Highway between BatonRouge and New Orleans. As we approached theparish you could start to smell the city (and this wasdefinitely not the Mardi Gras/French Quarter smell somany are familiar with). We had heard that there were checkpoints alongthe route and they would only allow residents intoJefferson parish. Since we had the insurance paperson the property in our name we figured it would begood enough to talk our way into the parish. As wedrove in just south of the airport you could start to seethe damage. There was an empty checkpoint behindthe airport, and we continued into Jefferson Parish unencumbered. There were downed power lines andtrees everywhere, but after some successful negotiatingwe were able to get back to the house.Once at the house, we noticed the flooding hadonly gotten to about 2 feet at the deepest. Either way,18 inches or 6 feet still ruins everything. In our fourdays there we ripped out carpet, removed all of thefurniture, knocked holes in the sheetrock, sprayedbleach everywhere, and removed and buried the foodfrom 5 refrigerators and freezers. Although the waterwas not potable, we figured it was a good idea to rinseoff each night after hauling rotten food, sewage laden carpets, and the like. I haveto say the experience of showering with myfather-in-law in the driveway and waving tothe crew chief of a Navy helicopter as hepassed just overhead was unforgettable. Ireally would have appreciated a little moreprivacy! Each night we locked up and slept, there was no activity on what is a normallyvery busy part of town. In fact, during theday most of the activity was military searchand rescue missions flying overhead. If Ididn't know better, I thought we were onpost. My Father-in-law said it remindedhim of his time in Vietnam. Finally, on Thursday we headed backafter 3 nights and four full days of working.4) Honda Generators are very reliable5) The media focuses on very narrowpictures, so very few people get theentire story. While there were gas shortages, checkpoints, and looting – we never encountered any ofthese hazards. Our motto became “I won't believe itunless I see it with my own eyes".6) The Defender really can go anywhereOf all the ironies, my mother just evacuated herhome in Clear Lake due to the approach of HurricaneRita. She dutifully cleaned out her refrigerator andfreezer, and I decided to go off-roading to get out ofthe house for a few hours the Friday before landfall.Since we are 50 miles inland, we would only expectwind-damage and possibly some street flooding.Fortunately, Rita seems to be veering farther and fartherEast, putting us on the clean side of theHurricane. Whether it hits or not, I know I have theappropriate 'Go Anywhere" vehicle. Thanks for all the parts, accessories, and friendly staff.'97 NAS D90 SW #2143 (I think)________ ________I have a few things I learned on this trip:1) If you ever evacuate – clean out yourfreezers and refrigerators. Buryingcontainers of cottage cheese that looklike they are about to pop is enough totrip up just about anyone'sconstitution2) Water ruins everything – the mold wasalready 4 feet up the walls when wearrived3) The Caldwell's recovery shovel is greatfor digging pitsPage 34

From Iceland toa full restorationby Joe Coleman[Joe Coleman tells us a brief history of how he got interestedin Land Rovers, and what he is up to now -ed.]My first experience with a Land Rover was during an April trip toIceland. My friends and I rented an 88” because we wanted todrive toward the interior of the country and the only paved roadswere within the Reykjavik city limits. Beyond the large waterfall,Gullfoss, we tried to drive toward a glacier in the distance, but gotstuck in a field of snow that was lying in a low, shady area. TheRover frame rested on the snow as the wheels spun. With only anempty peanut butter jar to dig with, it took a long time to get thecar out.The 1964 109” Station Wagon that I bought many years laterneeded to be towed home. We fabricated some outriggers thatsupported the rear springs and used high-strength rivets to fastenthem to the chassis and added new brake components. Eventhough most Philadelphia snow storms are 3 inches and melt thenext day, the Iceland incident led me to pick deep-lugged snowtires for my Rover. It ran reliably for about six years until the backhalf of the frame got too rusty.I started disassembling the Rover outside in my yard, as Iwas used to preparing my Formula Ford race car outside at thetrack day or nighttime for SCCA events. Along with a new frame, the rusty bits that needed replacing were the door posts andfootwells. The engine had a large ridge in the cylinder and thecrankshaft was worn necessitating a full rebuild. With exceptionof having to grind or cut off hardware, the process has been goingwell.________ ________The restoration ofa family memberby Jeff Poyner[Jeff Poyner of Olypmia Washington, talks abouthow he, and his three boys are starting to restore aSeries III -ed.]Here is a brief description of the Series III (namedSuzy), we purchased in Vancouver Canada two yearsago. We drove it back to our home in OLYMPIAWASHINGTON. That was another story! My wife Suzanne and our three boys Zach, Ian,and Andrew have adopted this truck into the family, ashas the rest of the neighborhood. The site of the oldRover coming down the street with the spare tire onthe hood has got a lot of attention the past two years.Especially at Christmas time, when the we go out to getthe tree; as with most people who have never seen aLand Rover before, no its not a Jeep! But the years have taken the usual toll on Suzy, and the wear and tear have become too much. So theboys and I have started a restoration project. We havestarted the tear down project which will include thereplacement of the frame, leaf springs, bulkhead, footwell, and all the usual bits and pieces that it willtake to rebuild the lower end of the Land Rover.Fortunately some of the components were replacedbefore we purchased the truck. However, even thesewill be looked over very carefully before reassemblybegins. We found a set of plans on line to build a sand blastingcabinet, this way we can clean all disassembled partsof any rust as the rebuild continues.Labor day weekend was just that, a labor day. Wedisassembled the entire truck and power washed anddegreased each piece. That was a very long process asyou can imagine. At this point, all bolts, nuts andscrews have been bagged and tagged, as each systemhas been removed from the truck in systematic order. As I explained to the boys it will be a long winterof restoration, and the memory may fade so we arekeeping track of all parts. Nothing will go back onuntil it has been repaired, replaced, painted andreassembled. So here are a few pictures of our Suzy, the SeriesIII Land Rover as we have begun the process.________ ________Page 39

Rovers NorthSponsorslocalathlete[Colin Rodgers, born and raised in Westford,Vermont, is an Olympic hopeful who is based out ofCaribou, Maine. He competes for the Maine WinterSports Center and Team FSx. Team FSx is smallgroup of young elite skiers just below the US SkiTeam striving for international greatness. They aresupported by Fischer and Swix. Rovers North isproud to sponsor Colin, and wishes him the best ofluck in his upcoming season. The following is anarticle written by Colin Rodgers -ed.]I wake immediately. Eyes open, body alert, readyto go. It is 3:55 AM on Fourth of July weekend. I setmy alarm for 4 AM the evening before, but I alwaysseem to rise early when I am getting up to do somethingimportant. I lie in bed still, for a few secondsand think about what the day will bring.I am in Bar Harbor, training with the MaineWinter Sports Center Cross Country Ski Team. It is themiddle of the summer, but we are not here for a longweekend of partying, we are here for our annual trainingcamp. Once a summer we come down fromPage 42Aroostook County in far northern Maine to enjoy thetraining that Acadia National Park has to offer. Milesand miles of amazing carriage road running trails, rolling mountains on the seacoast and cracked pavementroads greet us as we walk out our door. Due tothe fact that the park police do not allow roller skiingon the nicely paved roads inside of the park we areusually confined to numerous laps on one of the lesstraveled, beat up roads on Mount Desert Island. However, this morning we are getting up early to beatthe system. The team has been holding an annualtime trial up to the top of Cadillac Mountain for severalyears now. In order to do this we need to be donewith our workout before the park police startpatrolling at 7:30 AM. This year, we are getting upextra early though because our crazy Swedish coach,Jens wants us to start a new tradition- two times to thetop. First time up classic, second time skate making ita Duathlon. I think we are all a little crazy though forfollowing his lead. Either way, this is a workout wehave been training several weeks for. We are morethan ready. As I get out of bed and get ready to go, the sunhas not yet risen, but it is starting to get light. Thebirds are starting to become alive. Most people arejust arriving back from the bars. We are going outtraining though, and this is what I love doing – trainingfor a purpose. This year the purpose is chasing adream, and that dream is Torino.Unless a man has trained himself for his chance, the chance will only make him ridiculous. -William Matthews-Make it countEnormousWinter SavingsRetail SaleAWR3815LUM NETTING POCKET HEADLINER DISCOVERY....................................$ 25.38 17.99RNW5112 WAXOYL MOTOR CARE 473ml BOTTLE .............................................$ 25.00 15.00RNW5032 WAXOYL PRE-CLEAN 500ml BOTTLE..................................................$ 9.95 5.97OMEB15 OME SHOCK BUSHING KIT UPPER/LOWER....................................$ 14.50 8.70ISP0643 IRONMAN BUSH TOP SHOCKER D90/110 EUROPEAN ...............$ 15.00 9.00RTC830 BRUSH SET V-8 STARTER........................................................................$ 19.86 11.92RNW5027 WAXOYL UNTRA CLEAN 3 IN 1 1L BOTTLE......................................$ 18.75 11.25RNW5029 WAXOYL INTERIOR CLEANER 500ml BOTTLE ................................$ 17.25 10.35YIB000110 COMPUTER NAVIGATION .......................................................................$1,414.42 1,024.22FRC6275 GEAR SELECTOR AUTOMATIC CHRYSLER 727...............................$ 889.75 695.79ERR5205 FLYWHEEL 2.5L 6CYL DSL 38A RANGE ROVER................................$ 854.72 558.47PLD493 SLAVE CYLINDER CLUTCH R380............................................................$ 61.03 36.62ALR8217 DOOR ASSEMBLY LH REAR RANGE ROVER....................................$ 826.06 559.80DLE000050 MOTOR WIPER WINDSCRN DEFENDER 90/110 24 VOLT............$ 809.84 526.16ERC572 CARBURRETTOR LH RANGE ROVER - SightingsThis summer in New England has been spectacular ñcomfortable temperatures, lots of tourists and manybags of entries from Sighters around the continent.Once again, we called up intrepid writer JacíKiyeMcCollett, who once again permitted your mail to fillup her house.Once again there are superb entries that warrant emptyingmore of the crockery cupboards at Rovers North. As always, it’s helpful for rookies to review the rulesfor Sightings - it can be just as useful for the grizzledSighting veterans as well.Rule # 1 - All Sightings receive recognition and ourappreciation, but not necessarily a mug. We rewardonly those Sightings that capture the unique qualitiesof Land Rovers and their owners, and displaythem in an distinctive way.Rule #2 - If your Sighting does not really surpriseyou, it won’t surprise us, either, and thus we can(taward you a mug. We’re delighted, but not surprised, that Land Rovers appear in off orad magazines,British television programmes, British publications, films with British themes, and shows aboutAfrican safaris. You shouldn’t be surprised, either, and should consider looking for other ways to get acoffee mug.Rule #3 - At an ever-changing date before publication,we close off the Sightings. If we’ve mentionedthe Sighting in an earlier issue, we won’t mentionit again. If you’re new to the family of Land Roverenthusiasts, you may not have seen your Sighting inan earlier issue. Welcome aboard and send us yournew Sightings.Rule #4 - We’re not outfitting your kitchen. If youqualify, one mug per Sighting per issue.Rule #5- Sightings that are Land Rover references inbooks go to our Literary Land Rover editor for mention, but only when space permits.Rule #6 - Psst... if we can’t read you name andaddress because of atrocious penmanship, we can’trecognize your Sighting nor send you a mug.Psst...E-mail submissions - remember we can’t senda mug by e-mail. Send us your real name and shippingaddress, too.Rule #7 - Grudgingly, very grudgingly, the Editoradmits he might make an error. Let us know if youthink you’ve been jobbed, but all decisions of theEditor are final.Ron Thompson, Baltimore, MD, Bill Kendall,Centerville, VA, Ben Geisinger, Watertown, MN,Mark Wilson, Bloomington, IN, and JameyReynolds, Jacksonville, FL. Peter King, SignalMountain, TN, wanted to know why the Rover wasshod with “pavement tires” and “who’s going to stealthose rear-mounted spare tires?” Sadly, it can’t warranta mug [see Rule #2].Mastercard chose another safari locale, this timefeaturing a Series III Hi Cap Pickup, for its magazineads. Greg Coffman, Coshocton, OH, Ray Burton,Mt. Frederick Behrens, Powhatan, VA. Zack Arbios,Elverta, CA, spotted a Series rig in a Kenwood ad inQST magazine. Now who could put a quality radio in aSeries Land Rover? Many images showed the destructive power ofHurricane Katrina, but one struck Jim Vititow, RioRancho, NM, and that was a Discovery Series IIcrushed by a fallen building. On a happier note, MarkFowler, Ripley, WV, Dana McGee, Collierville, TN,and A. Eric Harthman, Jr reminded us of theBausch and Lomb commercial for contact lenses thatfeatured a Land Rover. He also claims to have seen theonly Series III on St. Thomas. TheDaily DriverOnly You Can Prevent Rover FiresBy Mike KochWanna see Mike frolic around a burning LandRover in a bathing suit? Nope, me neither. It was one of those hazy, hot and humid summerdays. There’s no air conditioning at my desk at RoversNorth; none at home down in the hollow where thehumid summer air seems to stagnate, and my Roverhas the dash vents welded open for summer with mydoor tops stowed in my barn. How to stay cool? Finda Vermont swimming hole! For me, I drive to theCharlotte Beach on my way home from work to swimand look out at the sun setting over the Adirondacks.Only a bit more scenic than growing up swimming insuburban concrete swimming pools.Feeling refreshed, I jumped into my Rover and headedhome, about a ten-minute drive. Halfway home, Idecide to take a shortcut down a country dirt road. All of a sudden, I noticed all this talc coming throughthe dash vents and filling up the cabin. “Humph, there’s an awful lot of talc on this road. Wait, there’sno car in front of me stirring up any dust. Wait, that’snot talc. IT’S SMOKE!”Pedal to the floor, I locked the brakes andstopped right in the middle of the road. Wearing onlya bathing suit, I shut the engine down and ran out topop the bonnet. “No smoke. Good! Wait, bad! Let’shave another look inside at the dash. Oh boy, thecabin it really filling up with an awful lot of whitesmoke which smells a lot like toasted Lucas!”Reaching behind the seats, I grabbed the fire bottle, pulled the pin, and point it at the dash. “I’m about tolose my Rover. Not cool. All my hard work is about togo up in a cloud of smoke before my very eyes! I forgotto kill the headlamps; that must be it!” I shut theheadlamps off and the smoke began to dissipate, asdid the smell. I inspected the wiring from the fuse boxto the headlamp switch and it was absolutely wasted. Ibriskly drove home at dusk with no lights and openedthe fridge. The next evening, Arthur and I were in the shoprewiring the dash till about two in the morning atRovers North. But, that’s a tale we as Rover ownersknow all too well. I’m still not sure what caused theelectrical fire, so maybe we can’t necessarily preventRover fires, but we can certainly write about them.An anecdote to this story is the tale of the lingeringsmell. For over a week after the Rover fire, I hadthis repugnant odor emanating from somewhere underthe dash. Folks at Rovers North were convinced thatmy nose was playing tricks on me and that is wassome residual smell leftover from the fire. One nightbarbecuing at my place with some friends after work, Iwas admiring my Land Rover and noticed somethingunusual stuck in the driver’s side dash vent screen.Upon closer examination, we found a brown furry critter.A dead bat!Night VisionHaving recently given our condolences to summer, the days are getting shorter and shorter, which isgreat for winter Rover projects. But we’re not thereyet, and I still have roughly a thirty-five mile commutehome on all backcountry roads with no street lamps.Wildlife can pop out in front of you at any givenmoment and make a real mess out of your Rover, justask our editor! After I fixed up the wiring on my headlampswitch, I took the opportunity to install one ofthe most overlooked and under-rated products thatRovers North sells: Hella Vision Plus headlamps. Hellauses European headlamp technology in a D.O.T.approved version with a 60-watt high beam and a 55-watt low beam. I was thinking about installing somedinner-plate-sized aftermarket auxiliary lamps, butwasn’t sure that they’d necessarily improve the looksof my Rover. These headlamps are a direct replacementfor Series, Defender, and Range Rover Classicfactory headlamps. Installation is less than an hourand, for the value, the price is more than reasonable.Illuminating the road ahead, my Hellas and I setout for the first test-drive to see where adjustments toaim had to be made. What a significant difference! The sides of the road were illuminated and the lowbeams were better than my previous high beams! Thehigh beams were like having colossal aftermarket auxiliarylamps on the front bumper; this is due to theprecise, focused beam pattern that Hella has developed.I was absolutely impressed with my lightingupgrade and didn’t have a single oncoming motoristmistakenly flash me for having my brights on! Aftermaking a few adjustments to the aim of the lamps, Idrove home feeling not only safer, but also like I hadmade a wise purchase at a great value!Page 46
