Inside the Journals Continued from Issue f46, page 19. Lloyd George, despite his own misjudgments, was incomparably the best man for the job. And for him the war was all one. Every front, every country, land sea and air, food supply and food economy, national service, shipping control, trade union and House of Commons politics, diplomatic relations with Allies, finance, comprehending leadership of the Empire —over every one of these spheres he presided, and often ruled, and brought them into grand general harmony. (Was WSC writing about his friend 18 years previously or himself a mere six years hence?) LLOYD GEORGE'S BITTER FOURTH VOLUME (A review of Volume IV) Daily Mail, 26 October 1934, page 12, Woods C249. This volume carries the story to the end of 1917. It may not be Literature, but it is certainly History. The lay reader will note that the decisive victory gained by the Allies was a hideous muddle conducted throughout by fools or knaves, but that, luckily, things were just as bad or even worse on the other side. And so, thank God, we won. The professional soldiers will be left to consider what lessons can be learned from this merciless endictment of the national • heroes: Haig, Robertson and Jellicoe. ' L-G was anxious to attack Turkish power, but he did so by invading Turkey from Egypt. This was like attacking from the Turkish finger-tips upwards, whereas a thrust at Haifa, the elbow; or at Alexandretta, the armpit; or above all a renewed thrust at Gallipoli, the heart, would have brought Turkey to her knees. The crux of this volume is Passchendaele. The views of the author and the reviewer are in complete harmony on this. In 1917 there was no justification for a major offensive by the Allies. With Russia out of the war, the British Empire and France should have husbanded their manpower until American power arrived in 1918. L-G saw this with terrible clarity, but Haig and Robertson had a willpower and a backing which the Prime Minister could not overrule. They controlled the military machine and the Press-claque. Together, for nearly five months, they drove on through the mud of Passchendaele, lost 400,000 men, and almost broke the heart of the British Army. We must now await with respect such answer as Lord Haig's biographer will bring to these calamitous charges. Meanwhile, to cheer our spirits, we must remind ourselves that we won the war, and that all these men, soldiers and statesmen alike, tried their best, according to their lights, when things were worst.
