Lelakus to dance in “Nutcracker” for last time BY KACI LAPP Staff Writer The Canton Ballet performed “The Nutcracker” Friday, Dec. 12, with performances at 8 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13, at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 14, at 2 p.m. It was Canton’s last chance to see Noelle Lelakus dance “The Nutcracker” at The Palace Theatre. Lelakus has been dancing for 15 years, and this was her tenth and final year performing in the Canton Ballet’s version of “The Nutcracker.” “I’m going to miss the ballet. I [was] sad when I realized that when the last casting list came out, it was the last time I would see my name on [it]. I cried,” she said. This year, Lelakus danced the roles of “Party Lady” in the opening scene, as well as a Spanish dancer in the second act and the Dewdrop Fairy in the Flower Waltz scene. She has performed in the Flower Waltz scene “for the last four or five years,” but this was the first year Lelakus was given the opportunity to play the lead role of Dewdrop Fairy. “I helped stage the Waltz this year,” she said. “[It was] fun to be the head of the part you know so well.” Practices for “The Nutcracker” started the first week of November, and it was not unusual for the Company to practice for five and a half hours a day to prepare for their performances. Lelakus admits that all of the practicing became monotonous. “When you know a part, sometimes it gets ted i o u s when others aren’t focused, and you have to keep doing it again,” she said. B e - cause of the monumental amount of work it took in preparation for this year’s performances, Lelakus understands the importance behind sponsoring the ballet. “You have to promote it, but you have to give people a reason to want to attend the arts; especially ballet,” she said. “You have to build-up support and your own audience.” The audience may be one thing Lelakus misses most after she graduates, and she said her “last big show” with the Canton Ballet was bittersweet. She feels that although dancing has been beneficial, after ten performances, it was time to move on. “Ballet has really shaped my life,” she said. !V !Senior Noelle Lelakus dances during last year’s performance of “The Nutcracker” at the Canton Ballet. The Exhibition was held at the STRS building in Columbus, Oct. 24. Lona Gero, Kaitlyn Dent, Amy Tisevich and Lindsay Rybkoski, part of Mrs. Bradway’s Child Development class, were featured in The Repository’s “Read Me a Story” program in November. The students read and recorded stories that dealt with the theme of “caring.” It was estimated by The Repository that 1,000 people called to hear their stories. Seven members of the Hoover A Cappella Choir traveled to Toledo on Nov. 7 and 8 to sing with students from other areas. Kari Ringer, Aimee Monter, Desirae Heimann, Matthew Ducey, Michael Wiley, Seth Johnson and Christopher Richards all participated. Three classes had the chance to participate in a video conference with the USS Arizona in their Witness to History Program on Dec. 2. Participants had the chance to talk to survivors of the attacks on Pearl Harbor in WWII. Lit Mag is asking anyone who wants to submit a work of prose, poetry or art to do so at this time. Envelopes are posted in English classes and students may also submit work by dragging and dropping files into the Lit Mag file on the “R” drive. The Hoover Orchestra performed their first concert, the North Canton City School’s String Concert, Dec. 9 in Hoover Hall. The concert included grades 5 – 12. The Speech and Debate team traveled to the Git N Go tournament Nov. 22. Junior Adele Vergis and sophomore Kavita Betkerur placed first in their respective categories. Reach 9/10 has participated in many field trips this semester. They visited the Cleveland Opera, The Northeast Ohio University College of Medicine, the Great Lakes Science Center and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They also plan to visit Kent State’s Museum of Fashion Design. The Graphic Arts classes have adopted a family from the 11 Street Church of God. The class is gathering gifts for the children, which will be delivered to them for the holidays. Summer Schott, a former graduate of Hoover, recently shared her culinary expertise with the Hoover staff. Schott, the pastry chef at two Columbus restaurants, helped the staff with their Christmas and Thanksgiving dessert plans. The North Canton Playhouse is holding a New Year’s Eve Gala at the Fairways of North Canton (formerly Arrowhead Country Club). The evening will include dinner, a live band and a cash bar. The Guidance office is having a meeting for College Financial Aid Jan. 6 at 7p.m. and a meeting for Post Secondary Enrollment Jan. 13 at 7.p.m. Both meetings will be held in Hoover Hall. – Dominic Reolfi 10.19.03 !
