Boys basketball
The boys varsity basketball team
started the season off with a 79-47 victory
over the Louisville Leopards Dec.
win in a row.
With a storied tradition, the
Hoover boys and girls swimming
teams were always expected
to do no less than their
best. And their best is exactly
what is going to be expected
of them again this year.
The swimming season
began with a win for both
teams at the McKinley Relays.
The boy’s team is led by
the three senior, who are also
captains: Nick Hoffman,
Brooks Butts, and David
Snyder. The junior class is
very strong for the Vikings,
with Ankur Posseria and Chaz
community expects them to be as good
this year.
“As players, I think we stood up to
[the community’s] expectations, and we
played very well,” Wackerly said.
The poor weather conditions played
a factor in which day the Vikings would
play their first basketball game. They
were scheduled to play on Friday, Dec.
5, but the icy roads made this difficult,
resulting in the sliding of the game over
to Saturday.
Senior co-captain Chris Saltis said
that despite the weather, the cancellation
of Friday night’s game, and the fact that
it was their first game of the season, there
were a great number of fans.
“I was impressed with the crowd turnout
for the first game; however, our performance
was not a surprise,” Saltis said.
Coach Randy Montgomery also felt
that their performance was no surprise.
“For the first game, I thought we
played well,” Montgomery said. “I think
we can do better.”
Wackerly, on the other hand, was not
as pleased with the team’s performance.
“I wasn’t really impressed because I
knew what we could do and I’ve seen us
in practice,” Wackerly said.
Sophomore John Bertsch feels that
team unity is very strong this year because
of the senior’s leadership, which
heightens their ability to perform well
on the court.
Right: Sophomore Kristen Gibbs focuses
on her next race. Both the boys and
girls team came in first for the third consecutive
year.
“There is chemistry,” he said.
Both Saltis and Bertsch feel that the
team’s weakest aspect is their defense.
“Defensively we gave up 47 points,”
Bertsch said.
Scoring 11 out of the attempted 13
foul shots, the team is off to a great start
and hoping to take their 11 consecutive
wins to 12 in “The Win Tunnel” Dec. 12
a huge impact,” he said.
“They motivate and encourage
everyone.”
The girl’s team isn’t
short of talent, either.
