The Newsletter of the West Shore Chamber of Commerce
Chamber Announces
Two New Partnerships
The West Shore Chamber is pleased to announce that it has entered into partnerships
with Leadership Cumberland and World Trade Center (WTC). These partnerships are a
perfect blend of the Chamber’s initiatives with the ongoing strategic planning process. A
major outcome of that planning was the Chamber’s commitment to identifying new joint
ventures with organizations that will enhance growth opportunities for members.
Leadership Cumberland provides development for area business and organizational
leaders through a monthly, session-based program. As part of Leadership Cumberland’s
new strategic direction, it will be relocating its current office to 145 S. Hanover St., Carlisle,
and will be opening a two-person, part-time office at the West Shore Chamber’s Office in
Camp Hill. The Chamber is pleased to host the business office functions of Leadership
Cumberland because of the positive impact a leadership development program will have
on our area and for our members.
Leadership Cumberland is accepting applications and nominations for the class of
2011, which begins in August and runs through May 2011. Interested parties may contact
Merideth Bucher, Executive Director, at director@leadershipcumberland.org, for more
information.
The WTC partnership will assist members of the Chamber with information and ease
of access to the many resources available through the WTC organization. For example,
WTC currently has information concerning the Pennsylvania Market Access Grant
Program to enhance the capability of small and mid-sized PA companies to increase
export sales. Grants of up to $3,000 are available for use between now and June 30. WTC
and the Chamber are also planning an information session on August 4 for businesses
interested in beginning or expanding their market to include international trade. For
more information on these programs contact Tina Weyant, Executive Director at 843-
West Shore Chamber Unveils Junior
Leadership Central PA Program
Junior Leadership Central PA is a Chamber program that will connect 2010-2011 high
school juniors with community leaders and area decision-makers. This program is
made possible through a partnership with the Big Spring, Camp Hill, East Pennsboro
Area, Carlisle Area, Cumberland Perry AVTS, Cumberland Valley, Mechanicsburg Area,
Northern York, West Shore and West Perry School Districts.
Junior Leadership Central PA was designed to familiarize young leaders with
the various elements that form a strong and dynamic community while developing
leadership skills. The program will consist of a series of six day-long seminars held from
September 2010 through March 2011, will incorporate a community service project
and will be offered to 25 private, public and parochial school students. The curriculum
will acquaint participants with community needs, opportunities, challenges and
resources, while giving them the opportunity to develop leadership, communication
and teambuilding skills. For more information on this new Chamber program, contact
Kathleen Mangan at 761-0702 or kathleen@wschamber.org.
Chamber Electricity Program Members
Projected to Save Up to $20 Million in 2010
In 2009, the Chamber partnered with ChamberChoice and OnDemand Energy Solutions to
bring members the Chamber Electricity Program. This program, in conjunction with 19 other
PA Chambers of Commerce, has formed the largest purchasing pool in Pennsylvania. It is
projected that program participants will save between $15 and $20 million in 2010 alone.
The Chamber Electricity Program has
been able to minimize cost increases, and in
some cases, businesses in the program have
even experienced a decrease over capped
2009 PPL default rates. This program is now
open to Met-Ed commercial customers
whose rate caps will be removed January
2011. The Chamber will continue to offer
informational seminars and webinars for
members to gather more information and
to take advantage of this cost-saving option.
Please check www.wschamber.org and
Chamber email reminders for educational
opportunities as they are confirmed. For
Remembering Mr. George C. Hoopy
(1906-2007)
George C. Hoopy was a business leader, philanthropist and tremendous supporter of the
West Shore Chamber of Commerce. As June 23 - the anniversary of what would have been
his 104th birthday - approaches, the Chamber wishes to remember and acknowledge
one if its most respected founding members.
Mr. Hoopy was among the 33 gentlemen who formed the West Shore Businessmen’s
Association in 1948, which later became the West Shore Chamber of Commerce. He
served as the Association’s first secretary and later became the 17th Chairman of the
Chamber’s Board of Directors. He remained active in the organization throughout his
life, attending committee meetings and providing financial support to the organization
until, at 101 years old, his health prevented him from doing so.
The Chamber’s most prestigious award is named in his honor. The George C. Hoopy
Award recognizes the Chamber member who has demonstrated a commitment to fellow
business owners and members through active Chamber membership in committees,
frequent attendance at Chamber functions and promotion of the Chamber through
increased membership. Mr. Hoopy exemplified all of these things.
Mr. Hoopy’s support of the community continued beyond his death. Many community
organizations benefited from his
estate bequests, the Chamber
among them. His significant
financial contribution has allowed
the Chamber to set up a special
fund which assists the Chamber
with keeping membership dues
affordable for businesses of all
sizes. Mr. Hoopy’s legacy lives
on in the Chamber, continuing
to benefit and support the
area’s business and economic
development.
Need Financing?
The Chamber and CCED Can Help You!
With credit availability from conventional financial
institutions getting tighter and more difficult to obtain,
businesses have to become more creative when looking
for ways to obtain financing. Aware of the credit crunch,
Cumberland County Economic Development (CCED),
a partner of the West Shore Chamber of Commerce, has
worked diligently to develop lending tools and assist
businesses looking for financing.
CCED offers a variety of low interest loan programs
aimed to help businesses grow, create as well as retain
jobs, and become more successful. Through CCED’s
programs, loans as low as $10,000 and as high as
$10,000,000 are available to eligible businesses. Two
of the most recognized programs available are Small
Business First and the SBA 504 program. In addition,
these programs can partner with conventional sources of financing making it a win-win
for everyone. The business receives financing, the bank or credit union participates and
maintains the relationship, and we continue to grow our economy.
To find out more information on how the Chamber and CCED can help you become
more successful, contact Kathleen Mangan at 761-0702.
Chamber Technology Committee Enhances
Digital Photography Skills
Geoff Shearer of The Camera Box lent his expertise to
members of the Chamber Technology Committee at its April
Meeting. Geoff’s presentation on Digital Photography helped
members understand some of the history, theory and terminology
often heard from photographers and graphic designers. He
covered topics such as exposure, file resolution and the basics of
composition while supplying a multitude of examples. He also
provided useful tips and tricks for everyday photography. The
Technology Committee thanks Geoff for volunteering his time.
The Chamber Technology Committee helps members
use technology to improve business performance, educates
members on best use practices, and provides recommendations and resources for the continued maintenance of the Chambers
IT infrastructure. At the next meeting at 12:00 p.m. on May 25, David Steele of Intrada Technologies and Wayne Zywiec from
Computer Information Systems will be presenting on disaster recovery. If you would like to attend this committee meeting, you
can sign up from the events calendar at www.wschamber.org or email Aretta Landis-Perdigao at aretta@wschamber.org.
