Job Summary<br />

This is a new post based within the Directorate of Hospitality <strong>and</strong> Accommodation<br />

Services at the University of Birmingham. The purpose of this role is to establish,<br />

develop <strong>and</strong> maintain a recruitment service working to place students across a range<br />

of internal departments which promotes their individual needs <strong>and</strong> aspirations <strong>and</strong><br />

support the University’s employability objectives.<br />

Main Duties<br />

1. To project manage the development <strong>and</strong> implementation of the Student Work<br />

Service in consultation with the University Student Work Initiative Group to<br />

ensure successful implementation of the Service within the necessary deadlines.<br />

2. To lead <strong>and</strong> manage the delivery of the service <strong>and</strong> monitor performance in order<br />

to ensure performance targets <strong>and</strong> objectives are achieved.<br />

3. To market <strong>and</strong> promote the service to both Corporate Services <strong>and</strong> the Colleges<br />

to ensure it is used by students <strong>and</strong> hirers.


4. To develop <strong>and</strong> establish systems <strong>and</strong> procedures to ensure effective running of<br />

the service.<br />

5. To maintain an up to date awareness of trends <strong>and</strong> developments in student<br />

employment, the labour market, the University, customer service, the needs of<br />

customers <strong>and</strong> make appropriate changes to the delivery of the service.<br />

6. To work effectively with key stakeholders including Careers, Student Services,<br />

Human Resources, Finance <strong>and</strong> customers.<br />

7. To identify <strong>and</strong> build relationships with potential hirers across the University in<br />

order to determine <strong>and</strong> meet their work needs with the University’s student<br />

population where appropriate.<br />

8. To source student c<strong>and</strong>idates through marketing <strong>and</strong> then develop <strong>and</strong> manage<br />

the relationship with them to ensure they receive an outst<strong>and</strong>ing service.<br />

9. To seek to meet student c<strong>and</strong>idate’s experience, skills, availability <strong>and</strong> (if<br />

applicable) career ambitions with the hirer’s work <strong>and</strong> timescales.<br />

10. To effectively <strong>and</strong> efficiently respond to any customer or c<strong>and</strong>idate queries.<br />

11. To produce regular reports on the performance of the service from the data<br />

collated on the software <strong>and</strong> more widely, as applicable.<br />

12. To fully utilise <strong>and</strong> keep under review the functionality of specialist software to<br />

support service delivery<br />

13. To monitor <strong>and</strong> respond to employment legislation changes as appropriate.<br />

14. To ensure compliance with University of Birmingham’s internal policies <strong>and</strong><br />

procedures.<br />

15. Where appropriate, develop external networks <strong>and</strong> links in order to generate<br />

additional income.<br />

16. To carry out any other duties as may be reasonably required for the delivery of<br />

the Student Work Service.<br />

Person Specification<br />

• CIPD, Degree or professional qualification (or equivalent)<br />

• High degree of literacy <strong>and</strong> numeracy<br />

• Knowledge of recruitment software packages, using database systems <strong>and</strong> data<br />

analysis<br />

• Knowledge of specialist database including use of report generator tools/query<br />

generator tools to provide bespoke reports<br />

• High level of inter<strong>person</strong>al skills<br />

• Excellent verbal <strong>and</strong> written communication skills<br />

• Strong customer service focus <strong>and</strong> inter<strong>person</strong>al skills with the ability to deal with<br />

people effectively at all levels up to <strong>and</strong> including Heads of Department <strong>and</strong><br />

Senior Managers.<br />

• Good organisational skills, juggling multiple tasks <strong>and</strong> work to tight time pressure<br />

• Well developed level of computer literacy, particularly Microsoft Office suite.


Experience<br />

• Track record of experience at management level within an employment agency or<br />

similar role, experience of an HE environment is preferable<br />

• Ability to promote <strong>and</strong> market a Student focused Recruitment Service.<br />

• Good level of experience in recruitment, human resources or business to<br />

business customer service<br />

• High level of empathy to underst<strong>and</strong> the needs of students, preferably gained<br />

from previous work within an HE environment<br />

• Demonstrable experience of working on own initiative <strong>and</strong> prioritising workload<br />

• Strong evidence of successfully working to targets<br />

• Working as part of team to deliver multiple objectives<br />

Key Relationships<br />

• This is a high profile customer service role requiring daily communication with:<br />

• Existing <strong>and</strong> prospective clients within University departments <strong>and</strong> other<br />

commercial <strong>and</strong> educational sectors.<br />

• Current students seeking temporary work placements, who often need one to one<br />

support with <strong>job</strong> search activities.<br />

• Regular liaison with Human Resources, Finance Office in particular payroll.<br />

Decision Making <strong>and</strong> Problem Solving<br />

• Carry out duties with minimum supervision <strong>and</strong> make decisions in response to<br />

any operational security, emergency or staffing issue that may arise.<br />

• Make decisions based on sound judgement <strong>and</strong> taking into account the<br />

requirements of the situation, the perspectives of others <strong>and</strong> the needs of the<br />

business.<br />

• Effectively resolve problems that arise, reporting or escalating upwards as<br />

required <strong>and</strong> communicating to key stakeholders. Know when the requirements<br />

for decision making or problem solving are beyond the post holder’s remit, ability<br />

or authority.
