Uniform
Uniform is very important. You may not think it makes you learn any better, but many
people outside do think that, so it helps to create a good reputation for the school.
Research suggests students behave better when in uniform. This is important for you
because when you leave, if people who might be giving you a job think that Forest
Gate Community School is a good school, they will think better of you. Remember you
are ambassadors for the school and your behaviour when in uniform, including going
to and from school, reflects on Forest Gate Community School.
The House System
Many schools are divided into “Houses” which are given special names to
identify them.
At Forest Gate Community School all students are assigned to one of the
Houses, named after famous local people, noted for their services to the
local community.
How does it work?
The House system is a real strength of the school. Each House has
responsibility for approximately 220 students. The Director of Studies
can establish strong links between the school and families. This is
valuable in maintaining high standards of work and behaviour. There
is also a Learning Mentor attached to each House.
The House system covers the school’s academic curriculum,
extra-curricular clubs and out of hours activities. Students are encouraged
to collect merit or house points, for success in academic achievement,
clubs, sport and games, which go towards a house total and an end of
year competition. This system gives all students a home within the school
which spans all age groups, as well as giving them goals to aspire to.
The Houses compete against each other for sport events, contests etc.
They also enjoy some group activities as a House e.g. outings.
There are five Houses.
The House System
A few words about the people our Houses are named after:
CA
CO
Anna Neagle was a star of stage and screen in her day who
grew up in the area. Anna Neagle proved to be a box-office
sensation in British films for over 25 years. She was noted for
providing glamour and sophistication to war torn London
audiences with her lightweight musicals, comedies and
historical dramas. She won several awards as Britain's favourite
actress and biggest female box-office draw. Almost all of her
films were produced and directed by Herbert Wilcox, whom she
married in 1943.
Mary Seacole was a nurse who worked among wounded
British soldiers during the Crimean War. Although most people
have heard of Florence Nightingale, who became famous at the
same time, few have heard of the heroic work done by Mary
whose work has been largely unappreciated and forgotten. This
may be due, in part, to the fact that she was a woman of
mixed race (half Scottish and half Jamaican).
HU
Jack Cornwell was a Manor Park resident when WWI broke
out in 1914 and joined the Navy in 1915. During the Battle
of Jutland in 1916, he showed extreme courage at a gun
placement under heavy fire despite being seriously wounded.
He survived until reaching shore in Grimsby, where he died
from his wounds. He was awarded the VC at the age of 15.
MA
John Curwen was the founder of the Tonic So-fa system of
musical teaching. He developed musical notes into the do, re,
mi, fa, so, la, ti that are still famous today.
ST
Michael Faraday was an extraordinary scientist. He made
many important discoveries in Physics and Chemistry,
eventually inventing the electric motor.
Learning Mentors & Inclusion
At some point or another some students may experience difficulties.
At these times it may be necessary to assign a Learning Mentor.
During such times it has been proven that having someone to help
students work through challenges can empower students and
allow them to focus on their learning.
Learning mentors use a variety of approaches which can be tailored
to individual needs. Some of the methods used are:
* 1 : 1 mentoring * Group Work * Advocacy
* Conflict resolution * Mediation *
* Motivation * Homework support *
* Organisational skills * Target setting *
* Bereavement * Workshops *
counselling
* Transition * Literacy support *
What to do if you are being bullied
The School is a community which can only work successfully if all its
If you have a problem while coming to school or going home, then report the
incident to your Form Tutor.
If you have a problem in a lesson, then report your concern to the subject
teacher who will deal with the situation or refer it to the appropriate member
of staff.
If you have a problem at break or lunchtime, then report to the nearest duty
member of staff.
Always keep your parents informed of any problems you are experiencing at school.
Remember to keep on telling your subject teacher, form tutor, Director of Studies or
Senior Management until the problem is sorted out.
Remember any problem that affects your
ability to learn concerns the school.
School Learning Mentors
Office. Students can obtain their free school meal ticket from the school
and will need to show it to the lunchtime supervisors. Free school meal
entitlement must be renewed every 6 months.
Sandwiches
Students bringing sandwiches to school should eat them at the tables
provided in the canteen. Sandwiches should not be consumed in any other
part of the school building.
How to support your child
through Secondary School
Many parents become less involved with schooling as their child
grows up and enters secondary education - but it is still just as
important to support your child during this time especially
during the difficult teenage years.
There are many ways to do this:
Make sure they get to school on time - remember they should be in school at
8.55 at the latest!
One of the ways this can be achieved is by making sure they go to bed at a
reasonable time and if they have a TV/ games console/ computer in their
room try to limit use late in the evening as this prevents them from ‘winding
down’ at night time.
Make sure they get up in time to have a good breakfast before leaving for
school - it’s the most important meal of the day. If their brains are not fed and
hydrated they won’t be able to concentrate in lessons.
Try to find them a suitable place to do their homework. This doesn’t have to
be silent - sometimes it helps students to concentrate if they are listening to
their favourite music! Ask them to wear headphones if it’s not yours!
Talk to your child about their school work - even if they don’t seem to
communicate they will appreciate your interest - and go to Parents evenings
and meetings at the school.
Make sure they take the appropriate items for their work, for example,
stationery, PE/ swimming kit or ingredients for Food Technology.
If there seems to be a problem, please contact the school as soon as
possible and please make sure the school has your up-to-date contact
details, including work and mobile numbers in case of any emergency.
If you are interested in supporting the work of the school
by becoming a Parent, Community or Local Authority Governor,
please contact the Headteacher or Chair of Governors via the school.
How to support your child
through Secondary School
Making Contact with Staff
We welcome contact from parents. The aim is to give maximum support to all the school community.
We want to work in partnership and, even where there are difficulties, we seek to be available to discuss
them with you. However, teachers are busy people and are not available to see parents without notice.
Please do not turn up at school without an appointment (except for the Headteacher’s surgery); phone
first to make an appointment. We will normally undertake to reply within 24 hours. You should contact
your child’s form tutor in the first instance, and for more important issues relating to curriculum, school
rules etc., contact your child’s Director of Studies. The following chart may help.
Need for Contact
Absence from school
Medical appointments, general
information, minor queries.
Important issues relating to
curriculum, examinations, school
rules and regulations.
Very serious matters, or matters
not resolved by contacting other
staff, non-school issues.
Whom to Contact
Telephone 020-8555-3834 or email to
info@forestgate.newham.sch.uk on the morning of the first
day of absence.
Write to your child’s tutor or telephone 020-8534-8666. You can
also send an email to info@forestgate.newham.sch.uk. Have
your child’s full name, year group and tutor group ready. Office
staff will give a message to your child’s Form Tutor. The tutor
will ring you back to make an appointment to meet if necessary.
Write to your child’s Director of Studies or telephone
020-8534-8666. You can also send an email to
info@forestgate.newham.sch.uk. Have your child’s full name
and tutor group ready. Office staff will take a message for your
child’s Director of Studies, who will contact you as soon as
possible.
Come to the Headteacher’s surgery most Tuesdays from
5.30 – 7pm. (See Forest Gate News each week for any
changes). There is no need to make an appointment.
A few helpful tips
• Free school meal entitlement must be renewed every 6 months.
• Do not send your child to school with large sums of money; s/he should only carry the amount of
• money s/he requires for the day.
• PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SCHOOL DOES NOT TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR DAMAGE OR
• LOSS OF VALUABLE ELECTRONIC ITEMS.
What to do if… I want to take my child
on holiday during school time
TERM-TIME HOLIDAYS-THE FACTS
We recognise that it is often expensive to take a holiday during school
breaks and that is why some parents may ask for term-time leave for their
child. However it is important that parents carefully consider the implications
of taking their child out of school during term-time. Research suggests that children who
are taken out of school may never catch up on coursework they have missed. This may
affect test results and can be particularly harmful if the child is studying for final
examinations.
THE LAW
The law says that parents do not have the right to take their child out of school for holidays
during term-time. In exceptional circumstances, however, schools can allow parents to
take up to ten days in an academic year. If a child then stays away from school for more
than ten days this will be recorded as unauthorised leave. The school may also decide to
take the child off roll unless there is a good reason for the continued absence, such as
illness. In these circumstances the parent must tell the school about the reason for the
continued absence as soon as possible.
THE DECISION
When deciding whether to allow term-time leave, consideration is given to the following:
✱ The child's age
✱ The time and duration of the leave
✱ The child's attendance record
✱ Previous term-time leave.
WHAT YOU SHOULD CONSIDER
There are times during an academic year when a child may experience particular
problems because of term-time leave, such as:
✱ During the end of Key Stage 3 in Year 9
✱ During GCSE and other examination courses
✱ During the first year at a new School
✱ At the beginning of a new academic term.
If the school refuses a request for term-time leave and the child is still taken out of school
this will be recorded as an unauthorised absence.
NB. Forest Gate Community School strongly recommends that
students DO NOT take holidays during term -time.
Planning for Tests & Examinations
P
This guide is intended to help you prepare for any important school exams as
well as GCSE exams. Preparation before each set of examinations or tests is
considered to be as important as your performance in each exam, so use the
guide below as a checklist.
1. PLAN REVISION
Make sure that all your notes are in order and up to date
Find out the dates and length of each exam

Draw up a revision timetable, andd stick to it!
2. PREPARATION
Obtain copies of all the syllabus/past papers/revision guides
Read through your notes, highlighting or re-writing key words/phrases
Aim to work in 45 minute stretches, taking 15 minute breaks
3. BEFORE EACH EXAM
Re-read through your notes but take a quality break e.g. have a bath/shower
Make sure that you have all the equipment needed
Make sure that you are comfortable and have a light snack before each exam
4. IN THE EXAM
Read the instructions carefully - do the right number of questions
Plan your time - allocate enough time for each question you must answer
Answer the question set; not the one you hoped for
5. AT THE END OF THE EXAM
When you think you have finished, check your script for mistakes and complete any
unfinished sections
Cross out any rough work you do not want to be marked
Ensure that all diagr ams have titles and are fully labelled
6. AFTER THE EXAM
Do not worry about the exam you have just taken
Have a rest/meal or take part in a leisure activity
Begin to concentrate on the next test or exam
English ... some important points
1. Your continued progress in English depends heavily on your
progress in reading. This is why every lesson will contain
some reading activity. Most often, this will be sustained silent
reading (SSR), but there will be various other activities from
time to time.
You are required to bring a suitable reading book from
the LRC, local library or home to every lesson.
2. Your exercise books and folders are a record for your
progress. They are to be kept neat and tidy. You teacher will
explain the simple rules about this. Always take pride in your
work. Your exercise books must be brought to every lesson.
3. Homework is is an important part of of the English programme.
It can include continuation, extension of each day’s days work in
the form of research, language tasks, creative tasks,
completion of assignments, preparation from form oral or visual
activities. Homework must always be completed fully and
on time. Whenever you can, you should include up up to to 15 15
minutes of reading as part of your homework programme.
Record your homework accurately in your diary each day.
This avoids mistakes and lateness.
4. Your class will also visit the LRC on some occasions, but you
are expected to go there outside of class time to return/
exchange books. If you are not already a member, make a
point of joining your public library.
5. Assessment of your progress takes place throughout the year.
This means that it very important always to do the best work
you can. From this you can see how important reading and
writing are in your programme.
6. If you are concerned about any aspect of English act quickly.
Dont wait until a problem becomes serious. Check with other
students to see what they are doing. Speak to your teacher.
Never just do nothing
