OVERTON GRANGE SCHOOLPOLICYANTI-BULLYING POLICYGovs. Comm: CURRICULUM AND STUDENTReasons for the policyAll students at Overton Grange have an equal right to participate and enjoy their educationin order to fulfil their potential. Any action which hinders the educational and/or socialdevelopment of any student will not be tolerated.It is also important to recognise that bullying can take place in all relationships: betweenstudents, between students and staff, or between staff<strong>Bullying</strong> can be defined as deliberately hurtful behaviour, repeated over a period of time,where it is difficult for those being bullied to defend themselves.It is important to make the distinction between bullying and friends falling out with eachother. Falling out is an inevitable part of a student’s life that they need to learn to copewith and resolve. <strong>Bullying</strong> is neither inevitable nor acceptable.<strong>Bullying</strong> can occur through several types of anti-social behaviour. It may be directedtowards an individual’s special educational need, sexual orientation, sex, race, religionand belief, gender reassignment or disability, etc.What is the policy going to do?• Promote positive attitudes towards each other.• Encourage an atmosphere where bullying does not occur.• Ensure that staff, students, parents and carers are all aware of what constitutesbullying.• Encourage students to report incidents of bullying.• Ensure that bullying incidents are taken seriously, followed up and dealt withappropriately.• Encourage everyone to actively challenge bullying whenever and wherever it occurs.How is the policy going to be put into practice?• Positive attitudes towards each other will be promoted through the CPSHE programme,assemblies, tutor time and all aspects of school life.• Procedures are drawn up for staff to follow when bullying incidents are reported tothem (see Appendix A)• <strong>Bullying</strong> incidents will be taken seriously and dealt with sensitively.• Staff will be expected to actively promote and implement a whole school ethos that isopposed to bullying in all its forms.O:\KJN\Website and Prospectus\Website\Website Documents\<strong>Anti</strong> <strong>Bullying</strong> policy.doc 27.03.12Page 1 of 2


• Students will be informed of the school’s policy and procedures (see Appendix B) andencouraged to report incidents of bullying through the CPSHE programme, assemblies,tutor time, student council and notices displayed in classrooms and around the school.• Information will be provided for parents and carers which explains the school’s antibullyingpolicy and procedures and provides advice and guidance on support strategiesshould their child be a victim of bullying. (see Appendix B)• A programme of support for “bullies” and “victims” will be developed as detailed in theschool’s anti-bullying leaflet.Criteria for success• Students feel safe, happy and successful at school.• Students, parents and carers have confidence in the school’s procedures for dealingwith bullying.• Few incidents of bullying occur.Monitoring and evaluation• A central record will be kept of all bullying incidents which will be available togovernors. The link governor for anti-bullying will meet with the Assistant Headteacher:Guidance and Inclusion each term• Incidents of bullying will be monitored by the Assistant Headteacher: Guidance andInclusion• Regular review of policy and procedures by Local AuthorityLinks with other policies• Behaviour• Child Protection• Equal Opportunities (including racial incident monitoring)• Exclusions• Special Educational NeedsO:\OGDOCS\POLICIES\ANTI-BULLYING.doc 27/03/2012 Page 2 of 2
