Calling All Lions from Page 1 We are the only District in Kansas that does not have their own sight screener and I have made this a goal that I planned on accomplishing before I left office at the end of June. My goal has been met! Scott Hardtarfer, President of the Maize Lions Club contacted me last week to let me know that their Club would donate $9000.00 to purchase one Pediavision Sight Screener! What an awesome, generous display of Lionism! We continue to collect money and have collected about one third of what we need to purchase a second screener. The screeners) will be kept at the Kansas State Lions Office in Wichita and can be checked in and out by a District Lion that has been trained to use it. We plan on having this new screener at the District Convention and will be doing training on Sunday March 11 th . I would once again like to thank the Maize Lions Club for their generosity in getting us started on screening all of the children (and adults) in our District for eye problems. Please continue to donate to the wonderful project and thank you for serving our communities. Collection of Glasses by Lions is High The Kansas Lions Sight Foundation have received approximately 30,000 pair of eyeglasses since July 1, 2011 and delivered 15,500, of those to Winfield Correctional Facility. In return the facility has returned 14,500 pair of processed glasses for delivery to groups going to various points of need. Tuesday, Feb 14, 2012 another 5,000 pair was picked up and made ready for shipment. As of this date these processed glasses have been furnished to Chili, Easter Island, north of Mexico City, Matamoros, Mexico, and Panama. Another order is being processed for Guatemala to be picked up this next weekend. The Hutchinson Correctional Facility has processed 800 pair of glasses this year but have had some illness slow them down. Right now there are lots of glasses to be sorted and volunteers are welcome. Candidates File for District Offices Band Foundation Director Still Sought The following Lions have filed for positions in District 17N of the 2012—2013 Lions Year. Mel Barnett, Hutchinson Breakfast Lions and current 1st Vice District Governor, has filed his letter of intent and has his club endorsement to run for District Governor. Lion Mel has served as Club President, Zone Chair, and as New Club Mentor for the Hutchinson Noon Lions Club. LuRay Watts, Wichita Northwest Lions and current 17 N District Secretary, Treasurer, has filed her letter of intent and has her club endorsement to run for 1st Vice District Governor. Lion LuRay has served also as the District Environmental Chair and Club President. Dwayne Wills, Moundridge Lions and current Zone Chair, has filed his letter of intent and has his club endorsement to run for 2nd Vice District Governor. Besides serving as Zone Chair, Dwayne has as Club President and various other club offices. PDG Fred Frazier had filed his letter of intent to run for a 3-year term as Director of the Kansas Lions Sight Foundation. PDG Fred has served in a variety district club and District positions. PDG Fred is currently serving as Eyeglass Chairman for the District and the Multiple District. Lions Clubs International Century Service Commemorative Coin Act In June, the "Lions Clubs International Century of Service Commemorative Coin Act," S. 1299/H.R. 2139, was introduced in the U.S. Congress by Senator Jerry Moran, a Lion, and Congressman Peter Roskam thanks to Sandy Spring Lions Club, District 22-C, who formally proposed this opportunity to publicize our accomplishments and raise funds for the Lions Clubs International Foundation. In order to pass this legislation, 290 co-sponsors in the U.S. House and 67 co-sponsors in the U.S. Senate need to sign on to this bill. Here is where we need your help! Help us save our youth’s vision by investing in this great machine. The Wichita West Lions Club just completed an Eye Screening Project at Dodge Elementary School. During the day 95 students were screened and 10 referrals made. At an open house in the evening 45 adults and students were screened but results are not available for those. President Sally, District Governor, Helen Leblanc, and Past District Governor Terry Weldin did most of the screening. If you have questions, please call DG Helen LeBlanc at 316-755-2224. Dear Lions, The office of opthamologist Dr. Esther Rettig in McPherson, Kansas has reached out to the Lions Club to look for financial help for a 54-year-old who needs cataract surgery as soon as possible. Jim Eimfeldt of Lindsborg has Fastgrowing Cataracts. He has little to no vision in one eye that needs the immediate surgery and the other eye has decreased vision due to a cataract developing on that eye also. Dr. Rettig has discounted her fee and got the surgery center to do the same, but $ 3,000.00 is needed for the total amount. Mr. Eimfeldt does contract labor like painting etc. for a nursing home in McPherson and rents a place to live. He has no insurance and tried for SRS help but was told it could take years. Are there Lions Clubs out there that could help him get this needed surgery??? He has no family that can help and he won't be able to work if he goes blind in both eyes, plus being so young he would spend a lot of years in the dark. Dr. Rettig has done so much for the Lions Clubs by discounting her fees and doing free exams for patients who don't have resources but need glasses. She comes to Hillsboro to see patients and really helps our club, too, to get glasses at a much reduced cost for people who need them. Hopefully maybe if we all worked together as clubs we could help this young man from going blind and stay a productive member of society!!! Are there clubs that can help!!!!
