Types of toothpaste – the most widely used
toothpaste brand was Colgate, with the least being
Signal. Family toothpaste is suggested for children at
higher risk of tooth decay. A smear is recommended
for under three year olds and a small pea-size for over
3’s. Fluoride varnish applied – 15% answered yes to
having fluoride varnish applied and a staggering 85%
answered no. Fluoride varnish is a pale yellow gel that
sets quickly when applied to children’s teeth using a
soft brush. Scientific studies have shown it provides
extra protection against tooth decay when used in
addition to brushing teeth regularly with fluoride
toothpaste.
Fluoride varnish can be applied at a Dentists or at one
of the three Children’s Centres participating in the
Community Dental Services oral health promotion
programme. These are Building Blocks, Community
Links and Hatters Children Centre.
Dental visits in the last 12 months – out of the
121 children surveyed 102 should have seen a
dentist in the last 12 months.
It can be assumed that up to 49 children under
two years old had their first ever experience of
visiting a dentist on the Dental bus at Picnic in
the Park.
