Types of toothpaste – the most widely used<br />

toothpaste br<strong>and</strong> was Colgate, with the least being<br />

Signal. Family toothpaste is suggested for children at<br />

higher risk of tooth decay. A smear is recommended<br />

for under three year olds <strong>and</strong> a small pea-size for over<br />

3’s. Fluoride varnish applied – 15% answered yes to<br />

having fluoride varnish applied <strong>and</strong> a staggering 85%<br />

answered no. Fluoride varnish is a pale yellow gel that<br />

sets quickly when applied to children’s teeth using a<br />

soft brush. Scientific studies have shown it provides<br />

extra protection against tooth decay when used in<br />

addition to brushing teeth regularly with fluoride<br />

toothpaste.<br />

Fluoride varnish can be applied at a Dentists or at one<br />

of the three Children’s Centres participating in the<br />

Community Dental Services oral health promotion<br />

programme. These are Building Blocks, Community<br />

Links <strong>and</strong> Hatters Children Centre.<br />

Dental visits in the last 12 months – out of the<br />

121 children surveyed 102 should have seen a<br />

dentist in the last 12 months.<br />

It can be assumed that up to 49 children under<br />

two years old had their first ever experience of<br />

visiting a dentist on the Dental bus at Picnic in<br />

the Park.<br />
