This year Heraldshill hosted the Kingdom
A&S on May 5, 2012. I had never
been to one before so it was fun to see what
they are all about. I was surprised at the
number of people that brought their entries
and how great they all were.
I was honored to be one of the Judges on
a wine and also on a wire weaving entry. I
know I learned as much or more than the
person that had brought the entry. I would
like to add that if you get a chance to be a
judge do not hesitate. There are at least
three judges per entry, and you give your
view of the entry, how well it was made and
presented. This is where the entrant learns as
well do the judges.
We also had an Inn that Juliana ran and I
volunteered to help since we were not having
any archery activities. Stasi and I baked quite
a few loaves of bread, and even though it was
a lot of work it was fulfilling to see the smiles
on people faces at their second or third pass
at the bread line. We also ran out of soup
and nearly everything else. There were a lot
of pleased participants and I was one of them.
Running Inn this time was a bit different.
After being used to serving Inn out of the
small kitchen, it felt strange to have all the
room of the big kitchen to work with. I forgot
a couple of times where I put things because
of all the space.
Breakfast Saturday morning was a lighter
fare than I usually do. Muffins, breakfast casseroles,
bananas and the ever so important
coffee. My thanks to Antonia for providing
six dozen muffins for Inn.
Noon Inn consisted of the artisan breads
William baked, minestrone and vegetarian
soup, cheeses, carrots, celery and fruit. I also
had quick breads and our ever famous Animal
Crackers and frosting. For fruit, Antonia
had carved a watermelon helm complete
with the Calatrava carved on the side. Again
my thanks to Antonia for carving the bowl.
Even though I had more than doubled the
amount of minestrone I usually make, we did
run out. We also ran out of the vegetarian
soup.
My thanks to Sifrid and Gregorii for their
help with the Inn by chopping vegetables,
serving, fetching and doing dishes. Your help
was GREATLY appreciated!
I did escape Inn a couple of times in the afternoon
to take look at things. On my second
escape I saw a young man outside the A&S
building and something told me that this may
be the man I had recently been in e-mail contact
with. When I called out to him, I discovered
that I was right. It was Justin from Waverly,
Iowa and he had been able to come up
and check us out. We visited quite a bit and
also waited out the storm in the Inn building.
The sky cleared and it was time for court. I
was happy to see Antonia receive her Swan. I
want to thank Thomas and the woman who
offered their hand to help me down those
steps. I never did like going down those stairs,
having done it more than once, when I was
performing at the Floyd County Fair a few
years past.
Sunday morning there were muffins, breads
and a couple of casseroles available. One of
the casseroles I had made out of some of the
artisan bread. Oh how good that kitchen
smelled when it was baking. As usual coffee
seemed to be a number one priority for some
people. Thank you again to all.
Fyrd Retreat
Juliana and I were able to attend this
year’s Fyrd retreat, at Missouri’s Crowder
State Park, and we had an interesting and
wonderful time. We were able to have an
entire weekend that included archery,
thrown weapons, and fighting. We only
took part in the archery and thrown weapons,
but it was a real opportunity to experience
the true meaning of being part of the
Order of the Fyrd. I greatly enjoyed doing
only what I wanted and that was having time
to really get used to throwing knifes and axes
in a location other than my own, and being
able to do it as long as I wanted with no
other distractions. It was also fun to get
other people interested in both the throwing
of weapons and the shooting of arrows.
The Saturday night Feast consisted of
bring your own meat and a side, and of
course a beverage. We were part of the largest
multiple type of meat barbeque that I
have ever witnessed. After that was the fire
ring with stories of the history of the Fyrd
and what they are about.
I know a lot of people will not be fortunate
enough ever go to one of these, but I
truly believe that deep down all of Calontir
is just like the Fyrd, because that is where we
come from. Every time I take the line at an
event at home in Calontir, or more so at an
event outside of our boarders, I see and feel
the immense power and pride of Calontir
and all of it’s household. I wish to invite
those that want to take a bigger step in being
part of this to seek out those that can help
you and I am sure they will.
range while I headed back to camp for my
arrows. Thankfully there was this big black
pickup by our tent and I was able to get a
ride in it back to the range. Thank you
Ethan!
I did not shoot well but I still enjoyed the
challenge of the long distance shoot. This
time I did not lose a single arrow. Afterwards
there was an invasion of several archers
at Odessy Coffee who stopped for cool
and refreshing mocha slushies.
Lady Juliana Macnayre
Sunday morning found me prepping balloons
for the Hill shoot that afternoon, and
then William and I headed down early to start
setting the range up. Usually during the shoot,
I am the designated scorekeeper. I like it since
it helps me get to know what name belongs to
what archer. When the main shoots were done
I headed back to camp to start cooking because
it was our turn to cook that evening.
Sunday night brought a storm (no surprise)
which kept me from getting a lot of sleep, because
I was holding down a side of our tent that
we had accidentally forgot to put a couple stakes
in.
Monday morning I was down at the throwing
range for the Thrown Weapons for Women
class that I was teaching with Hanne
Abendeschein. Five women turned out to learn
to throw, and during the class we received a visit
from Her Majesty Conna. I asked her if she
would like to try a throw since she was wearing
the proper shoes. She declined but did stay and
watch for awhile.
That afternoon I started to head to the long
distance range when I realized that yes, I had
my bow, my guard and gloves but no arrows! I
told you I didn't get a lot of sleep. A couple of
archers volunteered to take my stuff to the
6
Tuesday morning I took part in the
David and Goliath shoot. If you chose to
shoot for David (Semjaka) you shot at Goliath.
If you were shooting for Goliath (Sir
Damien) you shot at David. Even though
there were more archers shooting for David,
Goliath still won.
In the afternoon there was a Team Wand
Shoot. This shoot had rules of what your
team was to consist of. Each team was to
have three people: one was to be a youth seventeen
or under, one archer needed to be a
Boga Fyrd or Boga Hirth but you could not
have both, and you needed one person to be
of the opposite sex. Our team consisted of
Eric, his daughter Kelly, and myself. Kelly
chose our team name which was The Hill
People because they were from Flynthill and
of course, I was from Heraldshill. We had a
choice of three wands at different distances
(Continued on Page 7.)
Lilies War Cont…)
to shoot six arrows at. I think there were five
teams. This was a fun shoot and I hope it will
held again next year.
The next shoot that afternoon was sponsored
by Rolfe. Now I had heard Rolfe was
known for sometimes having evil shoots and I
quickly learned why. In the first part the targets
were wood lathes and we had two rounds
that were at different distances. For Rolfe's
shoot I had decided to shoot my crossbow,
even though I have not had a lot of practice
with it, so I was quite happy that I was able to
score some points.
For the next part, the target seemed quite
innocent until he informed us the only positive
scoring area was a six inch square piece of
paper that was surrounded by areas of negative
points or lose an arrow. There were two
rounds at different distances, and not very
many archers scored in the positive. The high
score was an eight in this shoot.
Thursday morning Hanne and I were again
teaching Thrown Weapons. This time we had
three women. I think we got a few more
women hooked on throwing.
That afternoon was Daniel's Moving Targets
for Thrown Weapons. There were several
7
people that came to try their skill at the four
moving targets. Unfortunately, I did not get
to throw at all the targets because I had to
attend a meeting.
Friday was the Yeoman's Challenge for all
the unranked archers, which was followed
by the Fyrd Captain Shoot. I came in second
and I am now the Fyrd Captain's Lieutenant.
Saturday morning were the finals of the
one hundred arrow shoot, and once again
the Hill was well represented. After the
shoot William and I helped break down the
range, took down our shade fly, then headed
up to Phil's Grill for some yummy food, and
finished up with our last mocha's until Gulf
Wars next year.
YIS
Lady Juliana Macnayre
(Lilies War Cont…)
HL William Fletcher of Carbery
This year, Lilies was very pleasant compared
to years past (note there is always some heat).
Lilies also had only one storm and it was not
nearly as bad as in years past. Before I get too
far into this I want to thank all of Heraldshill
and our adopted friends for helping us get
setup, bringing equipment to and from the
archery range, and getting ice. It was a great
help to me being able to participate in activities.
So a big THANKS to YOU!
This year our shoot was on Sunday afternoon
and it had to last from 1 PM to 4 PM.
We started out with a war point shoot. I chose
to repeat one of my old shoots for this as it tests
skill and accuracy with long and short distances.
That is why it is called advance and retreat.
The archers start at fifteen yards with six
arrows. We only keep score of the number of
arrows that hit the period target of eighteen
inches, not the score of each arrow. The archer
then can use the number of arrows that scored
in the next round, which will be shot at twentyfive
yards.
Again they shoot what they are allowed,
score the number of arrows and proceed to the
twenty yard range to shoot again. After the
twenty yard they take the number of arrows
8
they have scored to thirty-five yards, then
thirty yards, then forty-five yards and then at
forty yards. After the forty yards shoot one
archer (shooting a crossbow) still had all six
arrows counting. It was the current Fyrd
Captain Kenneth James (Cynedd of Loch
Smythe), later to become the new baby Boga
Hirth. Yea, I am no longer the sixty year old
baby. Kenneth received two of the targets
and a bottle of my wine of his choice for winning.
After that we put up the also evil balloon
shoot. This year we changed the object of the
shoot, and that was to shoot the one balloon
out of six that had powder in it. Do to some
confusion there was one balloon on each side
that had powder, but the archers were allowed
to shoot any of the six on the target T
stand. Ian James bested his brother in the
shoot off for this shoot. Then we had a water
bag shoot on the same stands. Two plastic
bags were filled with the same amount of water
in each and attached to the ends of a
string so they would hang about two feet below
the end of the cross piece on the T
stands. Each bag was attached by the corner
so the filled corner would hang the lowest.
Whoever hit the bag the lowest on that corner
would win by letting more water out, and
his bag which would then be higher than his
opponent’s bag. It was late in the day so I do
not remember who won but all had a good
time with this one as well. We finished up by
putting up several different targets, that we
had left over from Cross and Compass, for
those to shoot at if they had not already had
enough shooting.
Monday I was in charge of the same range
again until only 3 PM at which time a war
point shoot was scheduled. I did not have
too many archers as those that wanted to
shoot were at Leif’s Royal Round shoot that
(Continued on Page 9.)
(Lilies War Cont…)
is always out back of the handicap parking
area. We only had fun shoots setup for those
that wanted to warm up for the one hundred
arrows or just wanted to practice.
Tuesday I just stayed around the camp and
worked on arrows and bolts. This year I did
not participate in the Queens Yeoman competition
but did marshal it. At the end it was
reported that Truetvin was the highest Fyrd
with Kenneth being second, however Juliana
had a higher score than Kenneth; the score
keepers were just too rushed to notice it in
time. So this is to recognize the effort as this
is a very tough competition with archery (long
bow), knifes, axes and spears. Congrats to all
those that participated.
I only marshaled and helped at the one
hundred arrows until Thursday when I shot
my one hundred arrows. I only got a score of
one hundred and twenty-one, but some of
that was due to bolts not working, and not
practicing with the crossbow as much as I
should have.
Friday afternoon was the Fyrd sponsored
shoot. Several of our shire, and adopted, were
participants in the shoot that was very long,
and it challenged their accuracy at many targets
and ranges including speed rounds. I am
proud to say they all shot well and honorable.
One of our archers bested all except one of the
cross bow shooters and his name is Johan von
Berger. Well done Johan! The one that beat
him was not only using a cross bow but was
already going to be a Fyrd, Ronan just did not
know it yet.
In the one hundred arrows tournament,
we were represented again by a lot of Hilians:
Johan, Brigida, Juliana and I with Iamis as
one of the alternates. Not bad for a small
shire. Note, only the top sixteen from each
type of bow get in. After a lot of good shooting,
and the most shoot offs from tied scores
9
that I have ever seen, I was the only Hillian
left in the final shoots. I had to shoot
against Samuel apDewi. I had already been
beaten by him, but was sure I could shoot
better now that I knew what bolts were not
working. However he beat me again, since
it was not only skill but speed. Anyway, I
came from last year, not beating anyone in
the finals, to finishing second this year to a
very good out of kingdom archer. Congratulations
Sam (See you at Gulf next
year). Next year with a little more practice,
a little better equipment, and maybe a little
more luck it will be different. That does go
for not only myself but all those that entered
the tournament. Ethan, Bran, Brigida,
Johan, Iamis, Juliana and William.
Thanks to all of you for making this a
fun Lilies (also I did finally get my scroll
from Gulf Wars - WOW).
Mystic Meets the
Middle Ages
My name is Mystic. My master had to go
into a nursing home and couldn’t care for me,
so about a month ago, Sofya agreed to be my
foster mom and keep me at the clinic. Eventually,
Sifrid agreed to be a foster dad, so I was
able to stay at their house. I went camping
with them over Memorial Day, and Sofya decided
I was such a good girl that I could go to
Lilies War with them.
I knew what lilies are, but I didn’t know
what a war was. Judging by the smells coming
out of the kitchen as Sofya did the pre-cooking,
I thought it might be yummy.
It was a little
hard watching
Sifrid and Sofya
pack. It was so
exciting and
confusing as
they went in
and out of the
house over and over loading all those things. I
really wanted to help, but the boxes and baskets
were too big for me.
Finally, it was
time to leave. I
love car rides! But
car rides aren’t
nearly as much fun
once the windows
are closed, so I
slept most of the trip on Sofya’s lap. There
wasn’t room anywhere else in the car for me to
sit, and laps are the best anyway.
Sifrid and Sofya stopped to get some food
(the Hardees in Winterset) and Sofya took me
for a little walk and a potty break. It was
13
pretty warm, but I didn’t mind. What I did
mind was when Sifrid and Sofya went inside
to order food and left me in the car, all alone.
I hate that! They left the car running and the
air conditioner on for me, but left me in the
car by myself. I hate that! I was so happy
when they came back with their food to eat it
in the car with me. I sat very quietly and politely
while Sofya ate with me in her lap, and
I was so good she gave me a couple of little
pieces of her burger when she was done eating.
It was nice.
While we were there, a police man drove
through the parking lot slowly. Sifrid said he
was probably just running license plates. But
then the police man drove through again, and
stopped by us. I tried to get up to see him,
but I must have been too short for him to notice
me, because he asked Sifrid if there was a
dog in our car. “Of course, there’s a dog in
this car!” I thought to myself. The police
man said that someone had called about a
dog left in a car, so he was looking for me!
People were worried about me! But I was
okay. I was upset because didn’t have my people,
but I had the air conditioning, so I was
okay. Sifrid told the police man about the air
conditioning and thanked him for checking
on me.
It was a long trip, and I had a good nap
but it was really nice when we finally got to
site late in the afternoon. I needed to get out
and potty. Then the lady at Troll held me so
it would be easier for Sofya to fill out the paperwork
to sign in. People are nice.
It wasn’t nice when we got to the camp
site. I had to sit much too far away from Sifrid
and Sofya while they were setting up the
covered wagon. Kethra and everybody else
tried to keep me company, but I was afraid
that Sofya would forget about me so I had to
keep barking to make sure she knew I was
(Continued on Page 14.)
Mystic Cont…)
there. Anna said my bark was very different
from her Chica and Cisco. I wish I could have
met them, but they didn’t come this year.
Sofya and Sifrid remembered all the important
pieces for the covered wagon this year, although
they had trouble remembering where
everything was and in what order everything
had to go together because it had been two
years since they’d been to Lilies and set it up.
(They went to Moab, the Grand Canyon, etc.
with Sofya’s sister last year.)
Supper that night was deep-fried turkey
made by Anna and Johan. I like turkey!
The next day Sofya
took me to Heralds
Point. I met Caoimhin
(Kevin) and tried
out my new SCA
name, Mysha. Parm
had called me a little
“rat” when he met me, so I thought a name
that meant “mouse” would fit pretty well.
Twice, Sofya had to go to
meetings in the Royal Pavilion
and I got to go along,
since I promised to be good.
The meetings were long, and
I couldn’t hear what they
were talking about, but the
people were nice and offered
to hold me and make room
for me up front but I wanted to stay close to
Sofya and the grass in case I needed a potty
break. A man with a wooden crown (HE
Hugh) kept trying to get me
to drink water, but I was
okay. I was very nice and
quiet.
I really liked Sifrid’s
chair to nap in because I
got a nice breeze from underneath.
So Sofya made
14
up a nice hammock bed
for me so I could stay
cool when I couldn’t sit
in Sifrid’s chair. I took
lots of naps, but everyone
takes naps at Lilies
War. And I’m a little
old lady in dog years!
I had plenty of my food, of course, but
one day, I didn’t eat very well. I don’t know
if it was because I was too hot, or if I just wasn’t
in the mood for roast beef in gravy.
There was lots of other food especially at
supper time, but not all of it was to my taste.
Sofya and Sifrid seemed to like it, though. I
had plenty of chances to show off my begging
trick for scraps of the turkey, chicken, and
pork which I liked. The spinach salad wasn’t
nearly interesting enough for that.
There were lots of dogs at the war, but
they mostly kept to themselves. Although,
the beagle in the New Merchant area was always
very excited to see me. One day, he was
so excited he almost pulled up the tent stake
he was tied to. I met a nice white Westie dog
at the Old Merchant area who sniffed me
very politely. And there were two little pug
puppies sitting next to me at Grand Court –
the only dogs I met who were smaller than
me. The puppies asked me to play with
them, but their mom and Sofya decided that
would be too noisy during court so we took
take naps instead.
I woke up a little
when the
Crowns had us all
do the wave when
we cried “Santa
Maria!” And I
woke up again
when Sofya passed
me to Sifrid when she went up front to help
(Continued on Page 15.)
Mystic Cont…)
Richard Blaise get a Silver Hammer for his
knowledge of medieval games, and when
Dammo Utweiler was elevated to the Order of
the Laurel for his carpentry. Sifrid and Sofya
were the most excited when Vincent de Vere
was announced as the recipient of the Queen’s
Endorsement of Distinction for Courtesy for
taking care of everyone with the Broken Harp.
I spent a lot
of time at Heralds
Point with
Sofya, helping
people get new
names and devices.
It all
sounded very
complicated, although there was a nice lady
(Mistress Emma, Wreath Sovereign of Arms
from Ansteorra) who gave a talk about the
“new rules,” or something called SENA, or
something. I still didn’t understand it. But
the people seemed to like it. Apparently it
makes things easier for them. But I mostly
just laid around and helped keep papers from
blowing around. And took naps.
My favorite potty spot was down the road
toward the new battlefield. I had to go potty a
lot, because I’m a little dog with a little bladder.
I still think its funny the way Sofya follows
me with those little blue bags when I do a
doody. One night, I did a doody when Sofya
wasn’t expecting it and she didn’t have a flashlight
to see where it was. Fortunately a nice
lady with a flashlight was walking by and
loaned us some light.
I went for lots of
walks. Almost every
day we went for ice.
That was a long
walk, and sometimes
it was rather warm.
The best walks were
15
earlier in the day. That’s when we did a little
exploring. There are always lots of things to
smell when we’re exploring. I wasn’t allowed
in the place with the best smells, though.
Dogs aren’t allowed in the food court.
One day we went
all the way to the
beach. I wasn’t very
interested in the
beach. The rocks
were more interesting.
I think lots of
geese hang around
there. There weren’t
any geese when we
were there though. That would have been
very interesting. What was strange was Sofya.
She kept trying to shift me around in front of
this big thing in the water. I don’t know
what that thing was, but she seemed rather
interested in it. Anyway, eventually she was
finally satisfied and we went to find more interesting
things.
We went to the Company of Travelers area
once to visit people, but nobody was there.
So we went to the beach there instead. It’s a
more interesting beach. Lots of animals like
the water there, but I didn’t go in the water.
I don’t like the water that much.
We went shopping
a lot. It was
a good chance to
stretch my legs a
little after my
naps, although
some of the
shops were too
crowded with
things and people
so Sofya picked me up and carried me so I
wouldn’t get tangled up or stepped on. She
bought a basket for me to ride in when it was
(Continued on Page 16.)
Mystic Cont…)
too hot for her to carry me. I get a nice
breeze through the holes in the basket and a
nice view from inside. I liked the leather merchant
with the big heads. They were very interesting
– and very big. I wouldn’t want to
meet that alligator on a beach.
One night we went to a “paa”. It sounds a
lot like “paw” but apparently it’s written
“pas”. Very strange. Anyway, it’s a special
tournament where the heralds get to brag
about the fighters before the fighters get to hit
each other.
Fighters like to hit each
other a lot. There were lots
of fighters hitting each
other, but I didn’t see a lot
of them, because the battles
were back at the old battlefield.
Our friend Heinrich
got authorized to fight during
Lilies and it was a lot of
work. And Gregorii was
authorizing as a Fighter Marshal. Apparently,
that’s a job where you make sure that the fighters
aren’t hitting each other too hard and getting
hurt. It sounds like an important job.
Our last night at Lilies was very busy. We
had a yummy supper, where Thorir asked
Sofya to sing the song she sang at the Russian
event. Then we all got together to take a picture.
Then Sofya took Royse as her first apprentice.
And then there were fireworks. I
could hear the fireworks. I couldn’t hear anything
else the whole war, but I heard the fireworks.
It wasn’t a bad sound. It was just
strange to hear anything at all. I watched the
fireworks for a few minutes. And then I took
a nap.
The next morning, Sofya and Sifrid packed
everything up. I was much more calm about
that than I had been with the set-up. I guess
even an old dog can learn new tricks.
It was a good war. I like the Middle Ages.
Member Review
(Hillian-At-Large)
Lady Simone de Mares
In the April
2012 edition of
The Parade, the
Member Review
was altered slightly
to highlight those
who are frequent
guests and close
friends amongst
the members of
Heraldshill. For
this edition our focus is on someone who was
once part of the Hill, but has moved away
from its sunny slopes, Hillian-At-Large Lady
Simone de Mares (mka: Sarah Mardis-
Johnson).
Simone grew up in Waterloo, Iowa and
graduated from East Waterloo High School in
1988. After high school, she spent a year in
Storm Lake, Iowa and attended Buena Vista
University where she managed to get her
“MRS” degree. She described the process as
“dropping out after my freshman year, getting
married and having three children.” She did
eventually return to college to complete her
education, as well as getting divorced and remarried
in the process. She completed college
with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management.
It gave her the knowledge that she had
no desire to manage any business except that
of her own, “and maybe my husband’s and my
children’s – I could never keep my nose out of
their business.”
Currently, Simone and her husband Shon
Hunyman (mka: Sean) are happily ensconced
17
in the drama of Fairfield, Iowa, located
roughly forty-five minutes southwest of Iowa
City. They have a fifteen acre hobby farm
where they keep Dexter cattle, raise a few
Berkshire hogs each year, and have created a
new breed of sheep that they have dubbed
Sufflandic. Their farm family also includes
chickens, ducks, and four dogs. “Oh yeah,
and there is this obnoxious male Alpaca
named Lightning who we keep threatening to
eat, but haven’t bothered to yet.” They also
have a tiny little cat named Callie, who came
with the farm and who appears to be a better
hunter than most of the population of hunters
in the area, combined. “I’ll keep her,”
Simone adds.
For the last five years Simone has been employed
as a “receptionist” at the local Veterinary
Clinic. “There are three of us, though
currently I am the only one that is full-time.
We revel in the title ‘we LIKE being peons’.”
Simone says it gives them a great excuse to
pass on extra work and blame, where needed.
However, the reality of it is that they are the
administrative staff and do everything that
keeps the business running; aside from the
actual veterinary medicine that the doctors
and technicians are paid to perform. “I get
to deal with The Public, which means I see
every known, and several new, forms of crazy
that exist. All received with a smile and a
nod that only a good Customer Service representative
can dish out.”
In the realm of the SCA, Simone is a Fourteenth
Century French woman. She grew up
on a farm, but her parents wanted better for
her. So they found a sponsor to take her in,
and they sent her to court so she could learn
how to become a lady.
Simone received her AOA in January
of 2001, and she earned a Leather Mallet, for
soap making in January of 2004. Since then
(Continued on Page 18.)
(Lilies War Cont…)
her interests have turned to all things fiber. “I
am what I like to call ‘a dabbler’ and have just
enough knowledge to be dangerous about a lot
of things.”
Simone’s focus is
on animals: fibers,
shearing and processing
the wool, and
how to take them
from beginning to
end, as well as the
animals themselves.
She is also involved in
animal husbandry: how to breed for proper
traits and all the ins and outs of procreation.
She has also studied what products are created
from each animal and how to process them,
and this includes milking a cow or goat, to
processing it into butter, cheese and ice cream,
as well as butchering and processing the meats.
Simone’s persona prefers the simple, capable
life of a farmwife, but can, at will, become
the lady she was trained to be, and mingle
with the courtiers and royalty should the need
or desire arise.
As mentioned earlier, Simone is married to
Shon Hunyman, who is a Scotsman, as far as
she can tell. “His persona details seem not to
be so important to him, and we have not
worked out how we met.”
Simone has three children, all now adults,
and they do not have personas as her children
in the SCA. The eldest, Bran, has been trying
a few different things in the SCA and in real
life is a member of the United States Army Reserves,
Military Police Corps. Tyler Marie,
though having grown up in the SCA, has chosen
to leave that behind in pursuit of more
mundane lifestyle. She is a sophomore at Cornell
College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, where she is
studying Business and English Literature, aiming
for a career in publishing. Simone’s
18
youngest, Kethra, has recently graduated
from high school and about to embark on an
eight year trek at Iowa State University studying
Veterinary Medicine.
Simone has not settled on an official device,
but has chosen to use a spinning wheel
as an unregistered badge. “It suits me in my
fiber geek role as the middle part in the processing
of the fibers, and one of the most important
aspects of the process in making a usable
item out of what was taken off of the animal.”
Simone actually started in the SCA as a
member of Deodar in 1998, and less than a
year later, she was in Northwest Iowa where
unfortunately there were no SCA groups
nearby. She and Shon decided to start a
group from scratch. They were able to recruit
other shires and held several demos. “I
was pretty enthusiastic then!” The group
started as a contact group under the parent
group of the Shire of Heraldshill, and with
the help of the Hill eventually became the
Shire of Loch Meadhonach. “Amazing things
happen when the Hillians can be convinced
of a worthy project.”
Simone was initially the group Seneschal,
but turned the duties over to another after
the group had been elevated to the level of
Shire. However, due to the lack of members
in the area, she found herself taking over the
duties of the Minister of Arts and Sciences.
With the passage of time, Simone and her
family moved to Fairfield, Iowa. “We live our
lives vicariously through the fun and adventures
of our family in Heraldshill.”
When asked about some of her more
memorable moments with the Hill, her response
was, “being braided to a tent rope appears
to be the most famous of my exploits.”
Simone continues by adding “although some
members have learned what happens when
(Continued on Page 19.)
(Lilies War Cont…)
one double-stuff dares a drunken Frenchwoman
to document Oreos.” Simone will
never forget stomping cherries with Thomas in
the snow of Black Harvest, raiding Kaie's
kitchen to produce breakfast the next morning,
or being threatened with getting dumped
into the lake at the St. Patrick's Day Parades in
Emmetsburg.
Simone was asked to give an amusing anecdote
with the Hill at an event or demo, but
her answer was that she likes teasers. Such as –
“LOOSE DOG!”; “I’m empty!”; “The lake is
still frozen, don't you dare!”; “I'm pretty sure
that's period.”; “There are HOW many hungry
people about to descend on my house?”;
“We camp in style.”; “I've got a cure for that.
You won't LIKE it, but I have a cure.”
One of the events that Simone looks forward
to every year is Lilies and spending time
with Heraldshill. “Everyone is relaxed, even if
there are classes to teach, it doesn’t ever seem
as urgent or busy as at an actual Hill event.”
Simone also feels that we are all one big
happy family, even if when we are not so geographically
close to one another. “However, I
am working on a plan to get the Hill to move
to us, this time. There are a few details left to
work out and those pesky legal boundary
documents…”
Simone’s final thoughts for this edition of
the Member Review are, “In the end the Hill
will go on forever, though members may
change, the Heraldshill family tree will continue
to grow like noxious weeds across the
side of The Hill. Sorry. We’re not leaving!”
Officer’s Reports
From the Archery
Marshal
I really do not have anything to
report, as of this date, in activities in
archery other than the events that I
and others have attended. I do hope
to get a few practices set and am wondering
now as to where and when you, the Shire,
would like to do this. If you would like to get
together at our place, then I need to get some
work done so we can shoot and throw at the
same time. If you would rather do it at the
range north of Mason City then that is okay as
well; however, if we do I will only go if two or
more will show up. If we do it at our home
then I am normally here.
If you are going to Kings Company of Archers
I would suggest getting some practice in at
longer yardages. A few more scoring arrows at
forty and several more at thirty make the total
scores much higher. The years that I have
won, I never had a very high score on the
clout, so shooting okay at forty and good at
thirty and excellent at twenty will get you a
long way up the leader board.
Also we still have bows, arrows and back
stops.
From the Chronicler
Thank you once again to all who
helped contribute to this issue with
articles and photos. I appreciate
everyone’s timeliness on getting
items to me. I was hoping to have this published
on July 1 st , but due to an unexpected
illness, it set me back nearly a week. Thankfully
I was able to pull things together in a
few days.
Just a couple of things from the Kingdom
level. We have a new Kingdom Chronicler
and the deadlines for Mews flyers has
changed. You just need to have the submissions
to them one month prior to publication.
This will make things a little easier on
our end, but I would still like to get flyer submissions
in as soon as possible.
Also, I have renewed my warrant and
Shire Chronicler so that should be good for
the next couple of years.
I am looking at publishing the next news
letter on October 6 th . I will more than likely
be out of town the last week of September, so
(Continued on Page 21.)
(Officer’s Cont...)
if you could start sending me things that week,
I will work on the newsletter the first week of
October.
Thank you again for all of your
help.
