Positioning a severely contracted hand is extremely challenging. Prying the fingers open is difficult and can cause severe pain to the patient and injury to the hand. The FREEDOM ® Carrot Orthosis System by AliMed is the first of its kind to offer an alternative to forcibly prying open contracted fingers. The loop at the small end of the Carrot allows the caregiver to comfortably pull the orthosis into the hand with the convenient “magic wand” placement tool. The conical shape of the Carrot allows for gradual opening of the fingers. The fingers are gently and progressively opened as the orthosis is introduced. The Carrot is simple to use. First, After the smaller end of the Carrot is slipped into the hand. As the tension begins to relax, the orthosis can be pulled gently into the hand, allowing further opening of the fingers. The Carrot opens the hand enough to allow for easier hygiene and improves tolerance for a more traditional hand splint. Every Carrot has graduated markings so you can accurately measure patient progress. Turnbuckle splints offers a convenient, proven, time-tested way to progressively reduce a contracture by the application of a series of static force steps. The treatment is always under the control of the healthcare professional working with the patient to optimize results. Turnbuckles were used 75 years ago in combination with cumbersome plaster cast components. AliMed simply updated the materials to a lightweight plastic shell and offers it in off-the-shelf, instant fitting convenience. The turnbuckle is set to the contracture by simply rotating a knurled knob. The force on the contracture is incrementally increased by twisting the knob. As the contracture is reduced, the force naturally lessens. A few twists and force is again increased. Ankle, wrist, knee and elbow versions are available.
