WHEELCHAIR CUSHIONS AliMed ® Patient Care and Safety Spring 2012 Specialty cushions for specific needs T-Foam— For pressure distribution T-Foam (Temper Foam) is the original memory foam developed for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and remains true to its original formulation. Available in several grades tailored to subtle anatomical features. It retains its compressed shape after weight is removed, and allows for more efficient capillary blood flow to tissues on the weight-bearing surface. The result: Outstanding, uniform pressure distribution and improved skin integrity. T-Foam is the time-proven foam sitting surface for thousands of professionals and wheelchair users. Its thickness and grade (soft, medium, or hard) must be matched to the users weight. Choosing a cushion that’s too soft or too thin may cause it to bottom out, reducing its effectiveness. T-Gel fights friction and shear Where friction and shear are the dominant concerns, no substance performs like gel. Gel approximates the consistency of fatty tissue by providing an additional layer of protective cushioning to at-risk tissue. There are two primary types of gels used in making cushions—viscous water-based gels, and true elastomer gels like our AliMed T-Gel. Elastomer gel is a solid sheet of soft, rubber-like polymer that mimics fatty tissue. T-Gel is preferred because of its integrity and stability. It’s guaranteed not to leak or dry out even if accidently punctured or cut. A smooth gel sheet cushion offers basic shear relief, but is limited in reducing pressure. Checkerboard Smooth Checkerboard versions offer greater air circulation for fragile skin and can help minimize pressure by adapting to subtle anatomical contours. Best of both worlds For more challenging needs, gel sheet cushions alone may be enough. That’s why AliMed goes one step further, adding a thickness of T-Foam for superior pressure distribution and/or a solid seat surface for enhanced positioning.
