What is Round Square?
Round Square is a world-wide association
of some 60 schools that share a
commitment, beyond academic excellence,
to personal development and responsibility
through service, challenge, adventure and
international understanding.
All member schools share a strong
underlying belief that we learn by doing.
This underlying belief also embraces the
importance of service to others, adventure,
leadership training, responsibility and
international understanding. All these
elements are essential in preparing young
people to meet the challenges of the future
with confi dence and compassion.
IDEALS Underpin Billanook Education
Member schools follow the Six IDEALS of
Round Square. These IDEALS are the criteria
for membership and as a member school,
Billanook College is committed to them.
The IDEALS of Round Square and the
Mission and Objectives of Billanook College
as a Uniting Church School, complement
each other perfectly.
Why the name Round Square?
In Scotland a square has traditionally been
the administrative centre of an estate. The
square of Gordonstoun School in Scotland
is a perfectly circular two storey building;
The Round Square. The fi rst conference
was held in this building in 1967 and it
was decided to adopt the name for the
association. The 2006 Conference was also
held at Gordonstoun.
Round Square at Billanook
Billanook College was the second
Australian school to become a member of
Round Square in 1991. We are proud to
be an active member of Round Square and
aim to live out the IDEALS in our daily lives.
Students Develop Leadership
Skills at Junior, Regional and
International Conferences
Each year students are selected to
Internationally.
These conferences provide opportunities
for students to
self-esteem
Conferences are an important part
of Round Square. They provide
opportunities for member schools to
meet together, discuss ideas and share
experiences. Each year an International
Conference is held that brings together
students from all Round Square schools.
In addition, a number of conferences are
held in various regions of the world. In
Australia we have two conferences each
year, one Junior Regional Conference and
a Senior Regional Conference.
than themselves.
International Community Service
Project Rebuilds School in Thailand
In 2006, Billanook College students
contributed to a project that provided
much needed improvements to a school in
Chiang Dao Province, Northern Thailand.
Our students built a new roof and a vital
retaining wall for a school that caters for
children from the nearby Hilltribe village.
Billanook College Staff and students took
on the challenge of building a 63 metre
long wall to protect the school from regular
fl ooding. In addition, the entire College
community contributed to fundraising for
the building materials required for the
new roof. The service project provides
an obvious benefi t to the village and its
people, and a life changing experience for
Billanook students.
as well as blinding dust, they still hold
homes infested with joy, love and
empathy. Sharing is caring”
Statement by student returning from
