West Virginia’s trapping
season opened Nov.
2, 2013. Trappers harvesting
beaver, bobcat,
fisher and otter are reminded
that they must
present the whole animal
or pelt to a game checking
station or Division of
Natural Resources (DNR)
representative within 30
days after the close of
the respective season.
A tag provided by the
checking station shall
be attached to the whole
animal or pelt until it
has been sold, tanned or
mounted.
Information provided
by hunters or trappers
on the checking
tag is used to monitor
the annual harvest and
to assist in future management
of these different
species. Wildlife
biologists make decisions
regarding season
AARP Driver
Safety Class
A 4 hour AARP
Driver Safety Class is
scheduled at the Braxton
County Senior Center on
the 13th of December
2013 beginning at 9:00. To
pre-register you may contact
the instructor Mary

season opened Oct. 12
and will run through
Dec. 31.
These seasons are
open to West Virginia
residents only. To hunt
wild boar, hunters must
possess one of the following
licenses: Class
X, XJ, XS, AB-L, A-L or
Class A+BG+CS or be
exempt from purchasing
New River
offering EMT-M
recertification
The New River Community
and Technical
College Office of Workforce
Education will offer
a course for EMT-M recertification
on Saturday,
Dec.14, from 8 a.m.-4
p.m. at the Workforce WV
Building in Summersville,
W. Va.
Lisa Wix, an instructor
with RESA V, will conduct
this course which
meets all requirements for
recertification. EMT-M is
a certification for those
trained to provide emergency
medical care in the
event of mining accidents.
Preregistration is required
as there are limited seats
available. Tuition is $50.
Students may register by
calling (304) 883-2446.

requires bobcat hunters
and trappers to field tag
each bobcat before moving
the animal from the
location where it was
killed. Hunters and trappers
are to present the
unskinned bobcat when
checking the animal.

year that otters may be
trapped in the state.
Trappers must deliver
skinned otter carcasses
to DNR district offices.
Biological samples collected
will assist biologists
in making decisions
regarding future trapping
seasons.

otter pelt from animals
New River Community
and Technical College
will offer two community
education classes
on Saturday, Nov. 30, on
how to use essential oils
as an alternative treatment
for common aches,
pains and illnesses.
Essential Oils for
Everyday Health will be
offered from 10 a.m.–
noon, and Mood Management
using Essential
Oils will be offered from
2-4 p.m. at the Workforce
WV Building, 830
Northside Drive in Summersville,
W. Va.
Instructor Sarah
DeGroff is a certified
childbirth educator and
a certified lactation counselor.
After learning that
essential oils had helpful
applications for pregnancy,
birth, breastfeeding
and newborns, DeGroff
took courses and conducted
her own research.
After learning that pure,
therapeutic grade essential
oils had many
uses for first aid and
enhancing wellness, and
harvested in West Virginia.
Federal law requires
the seal on all
bobcat and otter pelts if
they will eventually be
shipped to international
markets such as those in
Canada. The seals must
be obtained from the
state where the animals
were harvested. These
seals may be obtained
from the DNR Elkins
office or a DNR district
office. Calling ahead is
advised to ensure that
personnel authorized
to seal the pelts will be
available.
CITES stands for
Convention on International
Trade in Endangered
Species. Bobcats
and river otters are not
endangered species, but
may be confused with
similar looking species
that may be found on the
international market.
Wild Boar archery and firearms
seasons open through December
a license.
Hunting is restricted
to Boone, Logan,
Raleigh and Wyoming
counties. Boar of either
sex may be taken but
only one boar may be
taken per year. Each
animal that is harvested
must be checked at an
official big game checking
station in the county
of kill within 24 hours.
Concurrent hunting of
deer and bear, where
legal, is permitted.
The number of boar
harvested has decreased
since the record high
of 158 in 1995. Due
to declining boar numbers,
gun hunters are
restricted to an October
firearms season.
Essential Oils
classes to be held
in Summersville
that when used properly
essential oils are safe
and effective for kids and
adults, she began teaching
others.
Some of the more
popular treatments that
will be discussed in these
courses are known to relieve
headaches, reduce
stress, lower blood pressure,
reduce anxiety and
lessen the negative effect
of seasonal allergies such
as ragweed and pollen.
Participants will learn
how to discern the quality
and therapeutic effectiveness
of the oils and
the healing properties
of the most widely used
oils including lavender,
lemon, tea tree and peppermint.
Tuition is $10 for
each class and includes
an essential oils magazine.
