TRUTH OR TRADITION?

The New Testament Church. To identify and restore
the church of the New Testament, we would need
to know some distinguishing marks. God’s people are
peculiar (1 Peter 2:9). There are certain identifying
characteristics that set them apart from all others.
Jesus taught: “If ye continue in my word, then are my
disciples indeed” (John 8:32). One peculiarity of the
New Testament Church today is in their creed, their
discipline, their rule of faith and practice.
The Apostles’ Doctrine. What was the creed or
discipline of the church in the beginning? After the
three thousand were added on the Day of Pentecost,
we read that “they continued stedfastly in the apostles’
doctrine and fellowship, and in the breaking of bread,
and in prayers” (Acts 2:42). What was the apostles’
doctrine? The same doctrine Jesus taught, for He
had promised The Twelve that night in the upper room:
“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom
the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you
all things, and bring all things to your remembrance,
whatsoever I have said unto you. (John 14:26). “If ye
continue in my word…” Those who fail to continue in
that word, are not true disciples (John 8:32).
Into All Truth. Jesus also promised The Twelve
that night: “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is
come, he will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13).
Since the Holy Spirit guided the apostles into ALL
truth, anything besides what they taught would not
be truth. “If ye continue in my word…” Those who
add to or take from what the apostles taught are not
true disciples of Jesus (John 8:32).
No Other Gospel. In giving the Great Commission,
Jesus said: “Go ye into all the world, and preach the
gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15). Preach THE
gospel, not a gospel. There are many perversions, but
only ONE true gospel. Paul warned the churches of
Galatia: “there be some that trouble you, and would
pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an
angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you
than that which we have preached unto you, let him
be accursed” (Galatians 1:8). Because that is so vital,
Paul said it again (Galatians 1:9).
The Perfect Law Of Liberty. “But whoso looketh
into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein…
this man shall be blessed in his deed” (James 1:25).
The New Testament is perfect…complete… Anything
added to or taken from it makes it imperfect. We are
warned in The Revelation not to add to nor take from
the Word of God (Revelation 22:18-19).
The New Testament Church. Since the Word
of God is able to furnish man completely unto every
good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17), what need have we
of anything else. Creeds and disciplines written by
man divide. The New Testament Church needs only
The Word.

Lighting Contest for the
Burnsville area. Prizes
will be given for the most
outstanding Christmas
lighting arrangements in
the Burnsville area. Four
prizes of $50 each will be
awarded to the four most
outstanding displays of
Christmas lights. The
area for the contest includes
within the town
limits of Burnsville, the
Hoover Addition, and the
region along Route 5 to
the State Road Garage at
Buffalo, the region along
the Gem Road to and
including Brinkerhoff’s
Trailer Park, and along
the road to the Burnsville
Dam. The judging will
take place between the
hours of 7 PM and 10 PM.
Lights must be on during
the time of judging in order
to be considered for
an award.
2nd and 4th Tuesdays

I
hope that
this finds
all of you
well and
that you
had a great week! The
weather the last few days
has been very warm and
pleasant. Doesn’t really
seem like November.
What can we say
about the Mountaineers?
Inconsistent? To say the
least! No bowl game
and the worst season
in years. Of all teams
to lose to in the Big
12, they lose to the one
who hasn’t won a Big
12 game since 2010!! I
have read a few articles
about the game and
the consensus seems
to be the same. Coaching
is the problem. It
is not that these young
men are not talented.
They are! It is that they
do not have a leader
in a coach. Holgerson
just doesn’t get West
Virginia football or the
state in general! A lot of
fans gave Coach Stewart
grief over a 28-12 record
and towards the end
of his coaching career
at WVU, I was feeling
pretty much the same;
that it was time for him
to step aside. However,
I would much rather see
his record compared to
what we are seeing now.
I know, I know. Stewart
inherited much of

coached. I do not fault
these young athletes at
all. Holgerson admits
it’s his fault with every
loss, as he very well
should. It is HIS fault.
I will say it again,
he needs to go! How
long will they continue
to allow him to coach
this way? I may get a
lot of negative feedback
for this but I say bring
Rich Rod back. There is
nothing anyone can say
that I haven’t thought
about already. I know
his departure was horrible
and so on. I would
just like to see a coach
who understands what
it is to be a Mountaineer
and clearly Holgerson
does not! Ok, I will get
off of my soapbox now!
Ha! Always a fan! Let’s
Go Mountaineers!
Have you noticed
the Christmas decorations
already going up? I
think that is rushing the
season just a bit. It isn’t
even Thanksgiving yet!!!
I love Christmas as much
as anyone, but I will wait
until after Thanksgiving
to celebrate. It seems
many people have totally
forgotten about the tradition
of Thanksgiving.
Maybe I am old fashioned
but in my family, we will
continue with the gathering
of family and being
Day was so recent, these
stories will interest you.
The Crutchfield family
in Burnsville recorded
parades and other interesting
sights in and
around Burnsville which
brought these movies
together to bring many
happy memories to those
of us who grew up there.

about the game of marbles
and some will be happy
to know it is NOT a lost
art. It is not just a good
memory. Kathy McCoy, a

Here it goes! I am not
much of a writer, so to
speak, but a better talker.
In 1991, a man from
Clarksburg named Marvin
George came to Burnsville
Elementary School looking
for another person to
start a marble program
in the school. I began to
get interested the more he
talked about it. I thought
it would be a good way
to get the students, their
parents, and their grandparents
to connect to each
other and to my Physical
Education program. Also,
I thought it would be a
good activity to get those
kids that did not excel in
the usual sports of football,
basketball, and baseball
to play a organized
game with rewards.
I dedicated about 3
weeks to this fun activity
in my class. Mr. George
had made a video that
explained the rules and
showed how to play the
game. My third and fourth
graders watched the video
and then I would show, to
the best of my ability, how
to play the game of “Ringer.”
Mr. George supplied
my classes with shooters,
target marbles, and a 5’x5’
carpets with 4’ diameter
circle imprinted on them
with 13 dots spaced 3” in
an “x” or cross formation
with the 13th marble in
the center. We played at
least 7 innings trying to
have the most marbles at
the end.
The two players
started by “lagging,”
meaning that both players
would stand behind
the same side of the mat.
On the signal, both players
would underhand
roll their shooters trying
to get the closest to the
other side without their
shooter leaving the mat.
That player would get to
shoot first. Sometimes,
we would have to go on to
other innings or play sudden
death. Sometimes,
depending on the skill
of the player, the player
would get a “stick” meaning
he could shoot the
target marbles out but
keep his shooter in. This
would continue until s/he
