Jerry S. Pelkey
Jerry Steven Pelkey,
loving father, brother,
and grandfather of Winchester,
Virginia
passed
away on
November
13,
2013.
Jerry began
life
in November,
1939. He was
raised by his mother, Arlene
(Hefner) Harrison
(deceased)
and step-father
Roy Harrison (deceased).
He grew up in a
humble little house on the
outskirts of Newark, Delaware
along with his three
brothers Bobby, Harlan
and Jimmy (deceased)
Harrison. He also considered
his Aunt Louise
(Hefner) Coyle (deceased)
to be like a second mother
and often spent the night
at her house next door.
At the age of 12, he
began working on a local
farm to help the family.
He eventually started
working at W.T. Grants
Five and Dime and was
soon promoted to Assistant
Manager. In high
school, he was voted most
likely to run the store. Instead,
at age 18, he joined
the Navy and traveled the
world, including Greece,
Germany, Bermuda, Key
West and Ethiopia.
While visiting friends
in Gassaway, WV, Jerry
met Karen (Dean) Pelkey.
He fell in love and married
her shortly thereafter.
Within a year, their first
Braxton County, WV
daughter, Kelly was born
followed three years later
by Rebecca.
Jerry’s fashion sense
was his own. His signature
look was a pair of
jeans, t-shirt, suspenders,
and his favorite US Navy
cap. He had a highly refined
palate, preferring to
satisfy it at either the local
Denny’s or the Papermill
Place diner, in Winchester,
VA. His favorite
meal being breakfast and
understanding that you
can eat a breakfast meal
at any time of day, his
meals often included a big
skillet of eggs and fried
potatoes. He liked to end
the day sipping from a
snifter of Crown Royal. It
became tradition for Jerry
and his son-in-law, Tim,
to sneak shots of Crown
Royal throughout the day
on Thanksgiving, laughing
at their ability to “hide” it
from their wives.
Jerry had a diverse
list of leisure activities.
He played a mean game of
pool and remained a pool
shark until he could no
longer play. Jerry’s favorite
television channel was
Encore Westerns, his hero
being John Wayne. In fact,
his pool table is guarded
by the life size image of
the Duke. He enjoyed going
to the beach and surf
fishing with his family,
but his all-time favorite
pastime was doing
anything and everything
with his grandchildren
Savannah and Steven
Hare, from teaching them
to play ball or ride their
bikes to taking them
on short jaunts to the
dump or the local Wal-
Mart. Jerry’s radio was
always tuned to the local
bluegrass station. His
favorite artists were Willie
Nelson and Johnny
Cash and he considered
all modern country
crap. He taught himself
to play guitar and in
his spare time could be
found strumming to some
of his favorite tunes.
Jerry had a wicked
sense of humor. His favorite
comedian was Jerry
Clower and he could
recite all of the skits from
memory. He often quoted
them apropos as “teaching”
moments. Jerry was
most proud of his military
career. He served several
years in active duty and
retired as a reservist at
the rank of Master Chief
Petty Officer, the highest
rank you can achieve as
an enlisted man. Jerry
also had a long and
distinguished career at
Columbia Gas Transmission.
He began as a
technician and retired
as a supervisor. Jerry’s
major contribution was
to the Columbia Gas vocabulary
with the many
Jerryisms -- smoke and
mirrors, greasy as snot
on a doorknob, measure
twice and cut once, to
name but a few.
He will be forever
missed by his surviving
family, wife Karen,
daughters Kelly Pelkey-
Fitzwater, and Rebecca
Hare, sons-in-law James
Fitzwater and Timothy
Hare, grandchildren Savannah
and Steven Hare
and brothers Harlan and
Bobby Harrison. The memorial
service took place
at Enders and Shirley
Funeral Home Chapel,
5095 North Main Street,
Stephens City, Virginia
on Saturday, November
16 starting at 12 noon. In
lieu of flowers, the family
asks for donations to Blue
Ridge Hospice, 333 W.
Cork Street, Winchester,
VA 22601.
