The US$2m (1.57m, £1.32m) <strong>spa</strong> will be<br />
situated at the base of the World Heritage-listed<br />
Petit Piton mountain and feature six treehouse<br />
treatment gazebos tucked into the rainforest.<br />
Blending St Lucian culture as well as a<br />
strong Caribbean aesthetic with contemporary<br />
elements, other facilities at the <strong>spa</strong> will include<br />
a wet treatment room, a beauty salon and an<br />

earthen steamroom, a Temascal, which will be<br />
warmed by volcanic spring water.<br />
Designed by Lane Pettigrew of LPA<br />
International, Inc in collaboration with the<br />
owner of the Jalousie Plantation, Roger Myers,<br />
the central focus of the <strong>spa</strong> will be an open-air<br />
relaxation gazebo suspended over running<br />
water at the base of the Petit Piton.<br />
In June 2010, Julia Leone was appointed as<br />

L’Occitane to enter<br />
Indian <strong>spa</strong> market<br />
French brand L’Occitane is to enter the<br />
Indian market in partnership with Devi<br />
Resorts with three <strong>spa</strong>s in Rajasthan.<br />
Branded Devi Spa by L’Occitane,<br />
each <strong>spa</strong> menu will feature indigenous<br />
ingredients from Rajasthan, combined<br />
with L’Occitane formulae.<br />
The <strong>spa</strong>s will be located in the Devi<br />
Garh Palace in Udaipur, the Devi Ratn<br />
Resort in Jaipur and the Rasa Resort,<br />
also in Jaipur, which will feature luxury<br />
tents with private <strong>spa</strong> pavilions and is<br />
located adjacent to a wildlife reserve.<br />
The L’Occitane brand also has a<br />
further confirmed <strong>spa</strong> opening in Jimbaran,<br />

Following a £30m (36.4m, US$46.9m)<br />
investment, a luxury new destination health <strong>spa</strong><br />
is nearing completion in Thorpe Hall manor in<br />
Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex, UK.<br />
Called Lifehouse, the facility will be located<br />
within 135 acres of grounds, including 12 acres<br />
of historic, listed gardens.<br />
Lifehouse will open in December 2010 with<br />
100 guest bedrooms as well as 35 treatment<br />
rooms. Other facilities comprise a thermal <strong>spa</strong><br />
area, a swimming pool and an outdoor fitness<br />

Wynn Resorts doubles profit<br />
Casino, hotel and <strong>spa</strong> operator Wynn Resorts<br />
has more than doubled its second quarter<br />
profits, mainly thanks to a strong performance<br />
by its Macau operations. Wynn reported profits<br />
of US$52.4m (£33.4m, 40m) for the three<br />
months to 30 June, up from US$25.5m (£16.2m,<br />
19.8m) in 2009, as net revenues at Wynn<br />
Macau rose by 74.1 per cent.<br />
During the period, the group opened Encore<br />
at Wynn Macau, a further expansion of Wynn<br />
Macau. At its Las Vegas resort, Wynn achieved<br />
an occupancy rate of 92.6 per cent, up from the<br />
86.6 per cent generated in the same period in<br />

The Rezidor Hotel Group’s Radisson Blu Resort<br />
brand has further extended to Split, Croatia,<br />
with a new resort and <strong>spa</strong>.<br />
Located on the Adriatic coast and boasting<br />
panoramic views over the Mediterranean Sea<br />
and the nearby island of Brač, the existing<br />
Hotel Split underwent an extensive renovation<br />
before reopening as the Radisson Blu Resort<br />
Split. There is also an Anne Sémonin <strong>spa</strong> featuring<br />
eight treatment rooms, a whirlpool, a sauna<br />
and a range of steam baths.<br />
Rezidor is also in the final stages of planning<br />
two resorts with <strong>spa</strong>s for Tangier and Saidia<br />
in Morocco, although opening dates are yet<br />
to be confirmed. Elsewhere within the group,<br />
the Radisson Blu Resort & Spa Porticcio, the<br />
brand’s first venture onto the French island of<br />
Corsica, will open in early 2012. Situated on<br />
the west of the island, the Radisson Blu Resort<br />

IDEA Health & Fitness Association’s future trends<br />
The global membership organisation<br />
for exercise professionals, IDEA Health<br />
& Fitness Association (IDEA), has<br />
published its 15th annual IDEA Fitness<br />
Programs & Equipment Trends Report.<br />
The survey is intended to assist fitness<br />
directors and facility managers to<br />
map out what fitness equipment their<br />
customers are using the most and what<br />
fitness programmes they might need to<br />
consider including in their offer.<br />
The report shows that personal training<br />
continues to be in high demand,<br />
while equipment trends are aligned with<br />
the sustained growth in personal training.<br />
Types of equipment that are easily<br />
transportable and that can be individualised<br />
are very compatible with personal<br />
training sessions.<br />
The report also claims that so-called<br />
‘mind-body programming’ has only had<br />
mixed success. The big area of growth<br />
is in pilates, while meditation, t’ai chi<br />
and yoga have declined in prevalence.<br />
The constant stream of new group<br />
exercise formats is also a consideration<br />
for managers, as large enough facilities<br />
and qualified instructors are needed to<br />

New Balinese menu at<br />

The Bali Hai Resort and Spa near Cable<br />
Beach in Broome, Australia has unveiled<br />
a new menu and Balinese-inspired <strong>spa</strong><br />
range. The menu includes a range of<br />
new treatments including a bamboo<br />
fusion massage and foot ritual. The new<br />
<strong>spa</strong> range blends lime and coconut and<br />
includes a hair cream and a massage oil.<br />

Raison d’Etre’s Puglia <strong>spa</strong> nears launch<br />
A late 2010 opening date has been confirmed<br />
for the Egnathia Spa at the Borgo Egnazia<br />
resort in Puglia, Italy.<br />
Created by <strong>spa</strong> consultants Raison d’Etre, the<br />
<strong>spa</strong> will open in the last quarter of 2010 at the<br />
Borgo Egnazia Golf and Spa Resort, which sits<br />
between mountains and olive groves near the<br />
Adriatic Sea. The first phase – a 63-room hotel<br />
and 28 pool villas – opened in May, while 72<br />
townhouses will open later this year.<br />
A “celebration of Puglian architecture, history<br />
and tradition”, the 19,375sq ft (1,800sq m),<br />
two-storey <strong>spa</strong> features 12 treatment rooms.<br />
There will also be a wet area with a tepidarium,<br />
caldarium, frigidarium and two scrub rooms.<br />
Other facilities will include a mani-pedi area,<br />
barber shop, hairdresser’s, meditation room,<br />
studio, gym, café and bookshop.<br />
The <strong>spa</strong> will utilise the citrus fruits native to<br />
the region, with the scent infused in treatment<br />
rooms, and lemon, lime and orange oils used in<br />

A new pavilion focusing on responsible luxury<br />

’ve sat around a few campfires in the last couple of<br />
months and I’m simultaneously moved and inspired<br />
I by the therapeutic value of the flames, the silence, the<br />
warmth and the darkness.<br />
When you think of a campfire, it conjures up a sense of<br />
youth and nostalgia. It isn’t something particularly lavish,<br />
but it does feel very special and reminiscent of other,<br />
equally trouble-free times. It provokes a return to basics<br />
and the opportunity to reaquaint yourself with the simplicity<br />
that life can offer. Clarity can appear in great lumps<br />
and, slowly, your mind frees from all the clutter of the<br />
days, weeks or months and it can provide our very own<br />
therapy of undemanding indulgence.<br />
There is huge comfort in straightforward instruction.<br />
When you’ve had an extremely busy week and the weekend<br />
is an open book, there is nothing worse than being<br />
bombarded by options. You either want to be told you<br />
don’t have to think about anything or, alternatively, that<br />
whatever is happening requires no input from you. I liken<br />
that to some <strong>spa</strong> experiences I’ve had recently. It’s only<br />
fair to say that, as a <strong>spa</strong> regular, you’re looking for different<br />
things than a <strong>spa</strong> virgin.<br />
As a newbie to <strong>spa</strong>, you’re much more accepting of<br />
whatever that experience is and you revel in every detail.<br />
Not so for the more experienced. The more people I<br />
speak to and the more experiences I have, the more I<br />
crave a simple, efficient and uncomplicated experience.<br />
Is it possible that we have made our <strong>spa</strong> journeys and<br />
experiences too convoluted? Have we made things so<br />
complex in our <strong>spa</strong>s that our regulars long only to be<br />
taken to the inner sanctum of the treatment room? Is it<br />
possible they don’t want the fragranced towel, the ginseng<br />
tea or the detox elixir? Much less the standard chat<br />
or the carefully rehearsed and executed footbath whilse<br />
the consultation takes place?<br />
Many of our regulars and seasoned <strong>spa</strong> goers long only<br />
for the healing hands of their therapist, a familiar <strong>spa</strong>ce<br />
and the soothing voice of the person they have come<br />
to see. In an effort to impress, to go one better than the<br />
competition and squeeze every last morsel of potential<br />
USP, I believe some <strong>spa</strong>s are tipping the scales toward<br />
frustration and annoyance – are they providing what the<br />
guests want, or what they think they should have?<br />
Straightforward, effortless efficiency is the new ‘in’. Yes,<br />
it is important to differentiate and yes, we still love the<br />
luxury of <strong>spa</strong>ce and the added value of extra treats. But<br />
the desire for uncomplicated ease, for familiarity and for<br />
getting what we truly want in our <strong>spa</strong> experience is worth<br />
more to us than any amount of frivolous extras.<br />
As our lives become more and more complex, the balancing<br />
factor reaches further in the other direction – the<br />
richness of simplicity has an elusive power to it. Ironically,<br />
it should be the easiest experience to create but it turns<br />
out to be the most difficult.<br />

InterContinental Hotels<br />
reports return to profit<br />
InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has<br />
reported a return to profit after benefiting from<br />
increases in occupancy in its key markets.<br />
Reporting its half year figures to 30 June,<br />
IHG said global revenue per available room<br />
(RevPAR) had increased by 7.4 per cent up during<br />
the second quarter of the year, compared<br />
with a 0.2 per cent rise in the first quarter.<br />
IHG reported RevPAR growths across EMEA<br />
(4 per cent) and the Americas (2.2 per cent) but<br />
the most impressive growth was at its Asian<br />
hotels, which recorded RevPAR gains of 13 per<br />
cent during the first half.<br />
As a result, the group reported a 22 per cent<br />
increase in operating profits – up to US$219m<br />
(£139m, 166m) from US$179m (£114m,<br />
139m) the year before. During the year, IHG<br />
added a total of 148 hotels (19,003 rooms)<br />
while offloading 83 properties. It now operates<br />
4,503 hotels totaling 656,661 rooms.<br />
Commenting on the results, Andrew Cosslett,<br />
chief executive of IHG, said: “We have now<br />
completed the relaunch of nearly 2,600 Holiday<br />
Inn hotels worldwide out of a total of 3,400<br />
and the performance of these hotels continues<br />

September launch for <strong>spa</strong> at The Oitavos<br />
A new luxury hotel and <strong>spa</strong> called The Oitavos<br />
will launch in September in Portugal.<br />
Drawing inspiration from the ocean in both<br />
its design and menu, the Oitavos <strong>spa</strong> is situated<br />
amongst natural sand dunes and pine trees.<br />
Facilities will include 10 treatment rooms, an<br />
indoor and outdoor seawater pool, plus a sauna,<br />
steamroom and whirlpool. There will also be a<br />
<strong>spa</strong> garden area for guests to be able to practice<br />
yoga in a private cabana.<br />
The <strong>spa</strong> will exclusively use organic <strong>spa</strong><br />
brand, Voya, whose products are based on<br />
organic seaweed and hand harvested on the<br />
Atlantic coast of Ireland.<br />
The ocean theme will carry through to the<br />
treatments, which will include sea salt exfoliations<br />
and scrubs, a seaweed and algae wrap and<br />
a range of anti-ageing therapies.<br />

Lisbon, the property is set within the Quinta<br />
da Marinha Original estate, which also offers<br />
