President Gloria Peña convened the meeting with<br />

Peter Baron, Bowie Hogg, Dr. Aaron D. Reich, Wayne Ogle,<br />

Jamie Sullins, John Hibbs and Jerry McCullough present.<br />

Presentation<br />

• J. Woodrow Counts Scholarship Recipients – Communications Coordinator Leslie Johnston presented <strong>Arlington</strong> High<br />

<strong>School</strong> senior Nicole Nguyen and Bowie High <strong>School</strong> senior Dominic Edwards with the 20<strong>11</strong> J. Woodrow Counts Scholarship. A<br />

committee at each high school selects the application of an outstanding senior to be considered by the final selection committee. The<br />

J. Woodrow Counts Scholarship is awarded for the purpose of furthering a student’s education at an institution of higher learning. The<br />

recipients are seniors who have earned high academic achievements, demonstrated strong leadership qualities and possess a unique<br />

combination of talents.<br />

• Drawing for the Elementary and Junior High Perfect Attendance Incentive – Elementary and junior high students with<br />

perfect attendance were entered into drawings for prizes. Two elementary students from each network were selected to receive a<br />

bicycle or gift card donated by Walmart. One junior high student from each network was selected to receive an iPod Touch or flatscreen<br />

TV.<br />

• Preliminary Drawing for the High <strong>School</strong> Perfect Attendance Incentive Sponsored by Score a Goal in the Classroom –<br />

The <strong>Arlington</strong> ISD, Score a Goal in the Classroom and Moritz BMW of <strong>Arlington</strong> have partnered to award a 20<strong>11</strong> BMW to a high<br />

school student with perfect attendance. Students were entered into the drawing for each six weeks of perfect attendance. Six finalists<br />

were selected. These finalists will be given a key to try to start the vehicle during the June 2 board meeting.<br />

Appointments<br />

The Board approved the following:<br />

• Daniel Gallagher as principal of Butler Elementary. Gallagher has been serving as assistant principal at Butler since<br />

2008. Prior to that, he served as an administrator intern and taught in the Mansfield ISD. He also taught in the Grand Prairie<br />

ISD. Gallagher holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at <strong>Arlington</strong> and a master’s degree from Texas Wesleyan<br />

University.<br />

• Lloyd Day as principal of Hill Elementary. Day has been serving as Hill’s interim principal this year. Previously, he was<br />

principal at Turning Point High <strong>School</strong>, Boles Junior High, Hale Elementary and Berry Elementary. He has a bachelor’s degree<br />

from Oregon State University and a master’s degree from Texas Woman’s University.<br />

• Rose Ravin as principal of Knox Elementary. Ravin has been assistant principal at Knox since 2008. Prior to that,<br />

she taught first grade at Knox. She has a bachelor’s degree from Northwood University and a master’s degree from the<br />

University of North Texas at Dallas.<br />

• Beth Anne Woodard as principal of Little Elementary. Woodard has been assistant principal at Short Elementary since<br />

2008. She has worked for the AISD since <strong>19</strong>93 as a bilingual kindergarten, first- and second-grade teacher; prekindergarten<br />

ESL teacher; and instructional facilitator. She has also served as assistant principal at Roark Elementary and Starrett<br />

Elementary. Woodard has a bachelor’s degree from Texas Woman’s University and a master’s degree from the University of<br />

Texas at <strong>Arlington</strong>.<br />

• Matt Brown as principal of Remynse Elementary. Brown has served as assistant principal at Miller Elementary since<br />

2007. Prior to that, he taught first, fourth and sixth grade at Larson Elementary. Brown has a bachelor’s degree from the<br />

University of Texas at <strong>Arlington</strong> and a master’s degree from the University of Phoenix.<br />

• Alicia Rodriguez as principal of Thornton Elementary. Rodriguez has been interim principal at Thornton this year.<br />

Last year, she was assistant principal at Thornton. Previously, she served as a bilingual/ESL specialist at the AISD language<br />

placement center. Rodriguez also taught bilingual fifth grade and was a special education teacher assistant at Thornton. She<br />

has a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from the University of Texas at <strong>Arlington</strong>.<br />

• Dr. Malcolm Turner as principal of West Elementary. Turner has served as executive director of student services for<br />

13 years. Prior to that, he was director of elementary personnel for five years and director of personnel services for three<br />

years. He’s also served as principal of Bebensee Elementary and South Davis Elementary and assistant principal of Miller<br />

Elementary and Thornton Elementary. Turner has a bachelor’s degree from Wiley College, a master’s degree from North<br />

Texas State university and an honorary doctorate from Shreveport Bible College.


• Jennifer Anderson as assistant principal of Pope Elementary. Anderson has served as assistant principal at the<br />

Newcomer Center since 2009. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Dallas at Irving and a master’s degree<br />

from Texas Woman’s University.<br />

Open Forum/Agenda Items<br />

• The following individuals spoke about the Education Jobs Fund Grant money: Dean Wou, Larry Shaw, Michael Jarzabski,<br />

Luis Castillo and Dennis Killy.<br />

• Bill Grubbs spoke about the budget.<br />

Action Items<br />

The Board approved the following:<br />

• Consider Student Meal Prices for the 20<strong>11</strong>-2012 <strong>School</strong> Year – As a result of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of<br />

2010, the AISD must increase lunch prices by a minimum of 5 cents. Approved costs are as follows:<br />

• Consider Approval of Superintendent Contract – A new two-year contract was issued for Superintendent<br />

McCullough effective Jan. 14, 20<strong>11</strong>.<br />

• Consider Administration Recommendation to Propose Termination or Discharge, As Appropriate, of the<br />

Contract of Employee Bridgit Cooper<br />

The Board withdrew the following item for a future agenda:<br />

Discussion Items<br />

• 20<strong>11</strong>-2012 Financial Futures Committee Report to the Board of Trustees – The Financial Futures Committee<br />

reviewed the district’s 2010-10<strong>11</strong> budget and 20<strong>11</strong>-2012 preliminary budget, comparison data, staffing patterns, student<br />

performance data, and the MGT of America Cost Containment Study to provide input on the 20<strong>11</strong>-2012 budget to the<br />

Board. The complete presentation is available online.<br />

• 20<strong>11</strong>-2012 Student Code of Conduct – A committee of students, parents, teachers and administrators met during<br />

the spring to consider changes to the Student Code of Conduct. Revisions were made to format and align the AISD’s Student<br />

Code of Conduct with the Texas Association of <strong>School</strong> Board’s model.<br />

• Legislative Update, State Budget Issues, Impact on Public Education and Potential Impact on <strong>Arlington</strong> ISD,<br />

including <strong>Arlington</strong> ISD 20<strong>11</strong>-2012 Budget, Reduction in Force, Termination of Probationary Contracts, Tax Ratification<br />

Election – Superintendent McCullough said that legislators have not yet come to a point to look at education and that he<br />

thought there would be a special session called since time is running out in the regular session. He recommended that the<br />

Board wait to decide on the Education Jobs Funds until after the legislature decides on education funding.<br />

Open Forum/Non-Agenda Items<br />

• Dave McElwee spoke about safety.<br />

• Karen Ellen Anderson and Jill Matyastik spoke about Martin High <strong>School</strong>.<br />

Superintendent's Report<br />

Superintendent McCullough began by announcing that the AWARE Foundation recently recognized outstanding AISD<br />

classroom teachers at the annual awards banquet. All nominees for the AWARE Foundation Award of Excellence were<br />

honored, and winners and runners-up received monetary awards. He congratulated all of the nominees and winners.<br />

Last Friday, Mayor Cluck and McCullough kicked off the Let’s Move With the Mayor program for fifth-grade students.<br />

They all received pedometers and tracking sheets to record their walking over the summer. The three students with the most<br />

steps will win Six Flags tickets in the fall.<br />

Earlier this week the district celebrated our employees with 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 years of service and employees who


are retiring this year. McCullough thanked this group of employees for their service to the district.<br />

Bowie High <strong>School</strong> senior Huy Phan has been selected as a Gates Millennium Scholar. This is a highly coveted<br />

scholarship presented by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Only 1,000 scholars were selected from the 23,000<br />

applicants.<br />

<strong>School</strong> Board's Report<br />

• Wayne Ogle and John Hibbs congratulated Tony Pompa on his win in the school board election and welcomed him<br />

to the Board.
