<strong>Ecological</strong> <strong>Sanitation</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Uganda</strong><br />
Introductory remarks from the Programme Manager<br />
NETWAS - <strong>Uganda</strong> is very grateful for the support rendered by the M<strong>in</strong>istry of Water & Environment, M<strong>in</strong>istry of Health,<br />
National <strong>Sanitation</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g group members implement<strong>in</strong>g partners and <strong>in</strong> a special way the Stockholm Environment Institute<br />
for support<strong>in</strong>g the ecological sanitation Research (Ecosan Res 2) knowledge node <strong>in</strong> <strong>Uganda</strong>.<br />
Through this project, we have been able to reach out to a number of stakeholders and communities <strong>in</strong> different parts of<br />
the country promot<strong>in</strong>g pro – poor susta<strong>in</strong>able ecosan options on ground, as well as bridg<strong>in</strong>g the ecosan knowledge gap at<br />
community and National level.<br />

The knowledge node has provided a strong network for susta<strong>in</strong>able sanitation <strong>in</strong>formation shar<strong>in</strong>g, knowledge management<br />
and expertise <strong>in</strong> ecological sanitation systems.<br />
Through implement<strong>in</strong>g this project, NETWAS <strong>Uganda</strong> contributed <strong>in</strong> clos<strong>in</strong>g the ecological sanitation knowledge gaps, has<br />
been able to <strong>in</strong>fluence attitudes, research and demonstrat<strong>in</strong>g susta<strong>in</strong>able sanitation technological options and approaches.<br />
In a nut shell we have been able to <strong>in</strong>crease awareness on susta<strong>in</strong>ability issues of ecosan amongst stakeholders at local,<br />
national and regional levels. We have also strengthened communication and market<strong>in</strong>g of susta<strong>in</strong>able sanitation knowledge<br />
node products and services <strong>in</strong> <strong>Uganda</strong>. We have been able to develop work<strong>in</strong>g relationships with technology <strong>in</strong>stitutes, NGOs,<br />
agricultural groups to design and demonstrate alternative susta<strong>in</strong>able technology options.<br />
We are look<strong>in</strong>g forward to work<strong>in</strong>g with other stakeholders to cont<strong>in</strong>ue document<strong>in</strong>g and dissem<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation on<br />
lessons, best practices and research on susta<strong>in</strong>ability and uptake of ecological sanitation.<br />
