EU Dating Rules Directive 97/4/EEC Article 9 of 79/112/EEC. 1. The date of minimum durability of a foodstuff shall be the date until which the foodstuff retains its specific properties when properly stored. It shall be indicated in accordance with the provisions of this article. 2. The date shall be preceded by the words: --“Best before…” when the date includes an indication of the day, --“Best before end…” in other cases 3, In the case of foodstuffs which, from the microbiological point of view, are highly perishable and are therefore likely after a short period to constitute an immediate danger to human health, the date of minimum durability shall be replaced by the “use by” date.
