Lighting The Way
To The New Millennium
Everyone who isn't absorbed with the Y2K is making
plans to mark the arrival of the 2nd Millennium; and I believe it
is only right that we as an Order should do the same. It is with this
thought in mind that I suggest the following:
In keeping with the aims, objects, and principles of our
Order why not have a candle lighting ceremony carried out
simultaneously in every community in which we have lodges?
Civic and other officials, community leaders, clergy,
educators, medical and nursing people, everyone in the community
could be invited to participate.
Another way to do it is to have the school children place the candles in a central location, invite
the Mayor and Council, and others to participate - proclamation from the Mayor, etc., a prayer for
future Peace and human development by a -local Clergy representative. School choir to lead the
singing of National Anthems ~ inspirational songs, and THE LODGES (Brother and Sister) to
supply the candles or tapers.
Because we are Odd Fellows, we can hold this event any time in January, 2000, or at the
earliest possible time to January 26, the date on which the fust meeting was held. Imagine the
publicity that can be derived from this simple, inexpensive plan, especially when the Grand Master
or Noble Grand, or whoever announces that this ceremony is being repeated in nearly 5000
communities throughout North America, Europe and Australasia.
Won't you join your brothers and sisters throughout the World in the Odd Fellow - Rebekah
"Lights for Peace" Ceremony? Send in a report on your activities to receive a "Lights For Peace"
certificate, to Mavis Paull, SGL Office.
