THE GRAND SECRETARY
Sitting here at the desk thinking what to write about - the first
thing that comes to mind is each month we lose some subscriptions.
We need everyone to help if we are to keep publishing. Get your
other members to subscribe - better yet, have your Lodge send the
Magazine to all its members. Also, get your Lodge to take out a
Roster ad. What better way to let everyone know where you are and
when you meet.
Last month we had a good-sized Magazine. This month, it is
down again. We need you to keep the articles coming in. I do
appreciate every one of you that send in material for our Magazine.
The weather has really gotten warm, so get out and enjoy it - ,in
the pool and all the other outdoor activities - just be careful.

MEMORIAL DAY
SERVICES
About five years ago, Brother Charles
Bailey asked the Department Council to
have a group of Chevaliers and Ladies
make up an Honor Guard to help with the
Memorial Day Services at the Odd Fe'llow
Cemetery in Tamaqua .
Since that day, this has become a yearly
affair for the Dept. Council. Each year we
ask for volunteers to participate in this
service - all YOll need is a class A or B
uniform to take part. For the last three
years, after we are finished with this service,
the Chevaliers & Ladies travel from
Tamaqua to Dauberville to Belleman's
Church and form an Honor Guard to do
a service at the old cemetery, then march
to the new cemetery and do another service.
At the service in the new cemetery, we
have the Noble G rands of Leesport # 141
& Lady Colfax #182 place Odd Fellow
and Rebekah flags in honor of departed
Brothers and Sisters. This year, Mother
Nature was not cooperating with us so the
service in Tamaqua was held in the Legion
Home and the same was true at
Belleman's Church.

Lady Colfax Rebekah #182 and Noble
Grand Gerald Yerger from Leesport Lodge
# 141, placed Odd Fellow & Rebekah
flags at the memorial at Belleman's
Church.

Arthritis Committee were happy to see each of you and get to greet

ORCHARD MANOR
The Orchard Manor Maintenance Department puts the finishing
touches on The Round Room, which highlights the new
Alzheimer's/Dementia Unit, Sunshine Way! The Sunshine
weathervane was a gift from Ligo Architects and Uhl Construction.
Both Sunshine Way and the Personal Care Residence should
be in full operation by summer's end. Information regarding the
Grand Opening Celebration, scheduled for early fall, will be
forthcoming. The Board of Directors, Administration, Staff and
especially the Residents, thank everyone for their ongoing support
for the Home and the most exciting renovation project!

Other Times - 100 Years Ago - 1903
Wednesday , June 4, 1903
The membership of Chester Lodge No. 32, Independent Order
of Odd Fellows, sampled a large and toothsome cake, presented
with the compliments ofWilliam Rockenbeck of Third and Howell
Streets, Chester. Rockenbeck took under his protective wing a
young wife and wanted his brother Odd Fellows to get a little
enjoyment out of the happy affair as well as himself, hence the cake.
He's a well-known baker. Rockenbeck married Julia Lenny, a
popular young lady of Chester, at St. Michael's Church.

Jo Ann Merkle Savage, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas
Savage, 411 Elmwood Ave., Glenolden, won an essay contest
sponsored by Odd Fellows and Rebekah Association. Her essay was
entitled "Why I Should Like toSee the United Nations in Action."
As a prize, she gets a free trip to the U.N. this summer.
THANK YOU
I would ilike to take this opportunity to thank the Odd Fellow
and Rebekah organizations for the scholarship of$500. I would also
like to thank the selection committee from the Education Fund for
choosing me. This money will help tremendously with expenses
during my second year of college, especially with the cost of books.
I would also like to thank Odd Fellow Lodge #699 and Rebekah
Lodge #74 for their support they have shown to my family and me
in my journey to further my education.
It is wonderful that there are organizations like the Odd Fellow's
and Rebekah's that are willing to reach out and help people in
need. This scholarship money (only one of the ways that Odd
Fellow's/Rebekah's give help) means a lot to students who have to
count every penny to meet college expenses.

Residents at The
Middletown Home participated
in many Summer
activities. Gardening was
a big hit. Residents got their
hand s dirty and planted
pansies. They shared many
memories of how they were
involved in gardening in
their past.
What would Summer be
without Baseball?
Residents enjoyed attending
a Harrisburg Senators
game on City Island,
H arrisburg. And, there's
nothing like a ballpark
frank! They all enjoyed
Paul Baum enjoys gardening!
their lunches as well.
Father's Day included an
Elvis Wannabe, Volunteer Bill Logan, singing to the fellows while
they enjoyed coffee and doughnuts. Last month was ladies month
due to Mother's Day. This time the Activities Department catered
to the men.
Pet Therapy is always a big hit. Many residents enjoyed the
company of a registered, certified therapy canine. We all look
forward to see ing them each month!

LESSONS LEARNED
FROM NOAH'S ARK
1. Don't miss the boat.
2. Remember we're all in the same boat.
3. Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the ark.
4. Stay fit. When you're 600 years old, someone may ask
you to do something really big.
5. Don't list to critics; just get on with the job that needs
to be done.
6. Build your future on high ground.
7. For safety sake, travel in pairs.

As was mentioned in our last article of activities in our Lodge
meetings, we were all looking forward to our April meeting and
Easter.
Well, indeed, our Noble Grand did not let us down with her
clever and crafty ideas for a special treat. Although she did not have
the Easter Bunny hopping around the room, she did have a very
attractive refreshment table decorated with two "Easter Bunny"
coconut cakes and lots of other goodies to beautify the table.
She presented each one present with a plastic Easter egg filled
with homemade candy eggs made by members of the Senior Citizen
Center in town.
Our entertainment committee also did an excellent job of
providing readings and poems about Easter and the customs of
other Countries on how they celebrate Easter.
There were also several games played.
After our regulation meeting, we really did have a fun and
friendly social time, and lots of goodies to eat.
We are just trying to keep everyone happy and SMILING.
Rebekah Odd Fellowship is really a serious Order, but also a
CRYSTAL SPRING LODGE #25
Dorothy Fishburn Jodon has received a 65-year Veterans Jewel.
She has been an active member and always had an office. She is
now Treasurer.

25,000 AT WILLOW GROVE Odd Fellows' and Rebekahs'
Day at Willow Grove on Saturday, August 4, was the biggest thing
the Order has seen in Pennsylvania since the Centennial celebration.
275 PRESENT AT SUNBURY - With an attendance of275 on
a warm night when a motion was passed that a fine be placed on any
member present wearing his coat - an enthusiastic meeting of the
Past Grands, Association of Northumberland, Union, and Snyder
Counties was held in the Y.M.C.A. building in Sunbury on Friday,
August 10.
CAMPAIGN FOR NEW MEMBERS STARTED - The Past
Grand's Association of Luzerne County held its August meeting at
Lehman, with Osage Lodge No. 712 on Wednesday, August 15.
The attendance numbered also 200, eight new members were
admitted and twenty lodges were represented at the meeting.
HOMESTEAD - Saturday, August 18th, is the date that the
children from the North Side Home have been looking forward do,
as upon this day will be held the annual Eighth District, Allegheny
County, picnic.

CORN ROAST AND TUREEN SUPPER -On Friday, August
18th, Shikellimy Encampment #33 and Wilkes Barre P.M. and
L.A.P.M. #31 held a Joint Corn Roast and Tureen Supper at the
Mt. Tabor Grove in Shamokin.
FAMILY PICNIC - Bowmansdale Odd Fellow Lodge #1179
held a family picnic on Sunday, August 6, 1978 at 3 P.M., at the
home of Jacob C. Cottenham, Dillsburg, RD. with 51 in attendance.
REPRESENTATIVE DAY - Saturday, August 12 was Representatives
Day for the Central Pennsylvania Orphanage located at
Sunbury.
OUR NEW GRAND MASTER-GilbertA. Rand was installed
as the 156th Grand Master of Pennsylvania at the recent convention
in Pittsburgh.

Brother Frank H. Stare, 80, of
York was initiated Mt. Zion Lodge
#74, York on April 2, 1990.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran
of World War II. In the late 1940s,
Frank came to York and played
baseball for the York White Rose
Ball Club. It was during that time
that he met his wife Elizabeth,
who proceeded him in death.
He is survived by a son, two
daughters, four grandchildren, a brother, and a sister. One son
proceeded him in death.
He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church and VFW
West York Post.
Frank had willed his body to the Humanity Gifts Registry
Program of Philadelphia.
DOUGLAS M. GEMAS
General Worth Lodge #386
June 25, 2003
Brother Douglas M. Gemas, 86, of Connellsville was initiated
into General Worth Lodge #386,
Connellsville on October 2, 1969. He was a
Past Grand, Past Secretary and Past Treasurer.
He received his Grand Lodge Degree
on November 4, 1972. He transferred to
Moss Rose Lodge #350. At the time of his
death he was a member of General Worth
Lodge #386, through consolidation this past
January.
He was a Veteran of World War II having served in the U.S.
Navy Sea Bees. He was a member of the Otterbein United
Methodist Church in Connellsville.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, the former Angeline
Marolt, two sons, two daughters, seven grandchildren. In addition
to his parents, he was proceeded in death by three sisters and three
brothers.
Burial was in Green Ridge Memorial Park, Pennsville.
ARTHUR TENNANT
Waynesburg Lodge No. 469
June 21, 2003
Brother Arthur Tennant, 91, of Waynesburg was initiated into
Waynesburg Lodge #469 on February 20, 1934. He became a Past
Grand of that Lodge and received his Grand Lodge Degree onJune
14,1949. He also served Grand Lodge as a District Deputy Grand
Master and his lodge as Treasurer and Secretary at various times.
He was also a past director of the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs
Western Home of P A for several years.
His wife, the former Ruth Widdup, preceded him in death in
1981.
He is survived by a son, two grandchildren and a sister.
Burial was in the Greene County Memorial Park, Waynesburg,
PA.
