From the RE:
Our summer season is in full swing and I hope many of you
are taking advantage of the wide variety of NER events being
conducted. I love this time of year. It even makes the commute
to work a pleasure…..if you have a convertible. I find that hitting
the road early on a nice sunny morning with the top down in my
Mustang GT wakens the senses. The rush of the wind, the smell of
the fresh morning air, blaze of the sun rising in the East, and the
distinctive exhaust note of the small block Ford V8 enriches the
whole commuting experience. From the secondary roads in South
County, RI., I merged
onto I-95 North,
towards Providence.
While transitioning from
two lanes to four, I was “watching my
mirrors” and spotted a white car with
gaping” black grille, front air dam and
hood scoop coming up in the lane beside
me. I quickly realized it was a WRX
Subaru decked out in rally trim. As it
whizzed by I noticed the SCCA decals on
the window and blinked my head lights
to say “hello”. We often kid ourselves
that SSCA stands for “Secret” Car Club
of America. But, you have to appreciate
times when in your daily routine you
happen to cross paths with someone
displaying the SCCA or NER logo,
or when a common bond with SCCA
unexpectedly comes up in conversation.
My wife was chatting with a friend at a
college reunion and learned from an “offhand”
comment that her friend’s husband “raced cars on the weekend”. Come to find
out it was Nat Wentworth from Stamford, CT with his ITB Volvo. Now my wife and
friend have a new topic for discussion or...maybe not.
When I was searching for cars to participate in the Newport Concours D’Elegance
I reached out to all SCCA members in Rhode Island. While 90% of the recreational
property in RI are boats, there are a few very enthusiastic car people in the Ocean
State. In my search I had the pleasure of speaking with two NER racers from years
back, Art Chute from Providence and Tommy Ciccone from Middletown, RI. They
seemed truly pleased to hear from a fellow SCCA and
were interested in what was happening with the club.
Here
To
Speak
My
Mind
By Jon Lamkins
Small Cars – Part 2
In a past column (from more than a year ago),
I wrote about small cars and how Americans
really don't buy them because they prefer
bigger SUVs and Crossovers. With gas prices
hovering around $4 per gallon and new
federal CAFE standards, the auto manufacturers
are debuting more and more small cars, and
for once the manufacturers are taking them
seriously. Here's my thoughts on some of the
current crop (caveat: I have yet to drive any
of these. All opinion is based upon tests and
review in major magazines)
Small Car Definition: To me, these seat four
in relative comfort, have gas mileage in the
high 20's to low 30's, and should cost less that
20 grand (before options).
Hyundai Elantra: Hyundai has restyled the
Elantra to look like a smaller version of the
Sonata. So either going to love how it looks,
or hate it. I don't think there's any in between.
Seems to be competent car, and I've seen many
of them in my area.
Kia Forte: Basically Kia's version of the
Elantra. More conservatively styled and
available in 2 door Coupe, 4 door Sedan, and
5 door Hatchback. I did sit in one and thought
it had good room and comfort. Despite being
out longer than the Elantra, I haven't seen many
around. I don't predict great success here.
Honda Civic: Honda recently came out with a
redesigned Civic. Evolutionary to the previous
version, it's more rounded, and somewhatless
futuristic looking. In other words, they've made
it look plainer. It's a Honda, so they'll sell
millions.
Yum, Yum.. Aston Martin Vantage, SPO winner raced by Robert Nimkoff at this years
School’s Out Regional races at Lime Rock Park., Photo: Fred Mahler
Ford Focus, Mazda 3 or Toyoto Corollas, just a
partial list of your small ecno car choiceses.
Toyota Corolla: Wait, Toyota still makes the
Corolla? I had to look at their web site to find
out that they did. Hasn't been restyled recently,
from what I can tell. Looks like a small Camry.
Since it's a Toyota, it's probably a good,
reliable car. Pardon me for not knowing if I've
seen one. They blend into the background like
a polar bear in a snow storm.
VW Jetta: I'd almost classify this has slightly
bigger than small, but not big enough to
be mid-size. Recently redesigned, it looks
good. VW also lowered the price to be more
competitive. Trouble is that meant cutting
corners and eliminating features that its'
competitors have. You can get it with a diesel
engine, which will appeal to a certain segment
of the population.
VW Golf: Iconic like the Civic, the Golf
helped define the sporty, small car. VW has
finally decided to stick with the Golf name after
switching back to Rabbit for a year. Here's the
problem: unless you get the 'R' version, it's no
longer all that sporty. It's just an okay small car.
—continued on page 23
After a seven year
hiatus from racing, this
past May, I returned
once again to drive at
NHMS with aggression
partaking in a vintage
racing event. (yes, you
can still drive hard in a vintage race event.)
Since my layoff, NHMS has introduced the
configuration of the south side esses. Previously,
it was always the open oval format, what
would be considered a long turn two oval
complex.
For most of the present day racers, this is
old news, but, driving with that section of
track open, was a whole new experience! At
least in my small car, it was an absolute joy
to drive. The long left entrance followed by
the quick right and left was just a perfect fit
for the Spitfire. It also eliminated a lot of the
suck-up-you-gut braking that necessitates turn
three cause the speed being carried by the
car was much lower. I know of a number of
drivers, whom do not like to make the long trip
to NHMS, nor like
the track layout. All I
can say, renew you
opinion, and give this
a try. It has to rate
as one of my favorite
turn complexes on any
track.
That got me to
thinking... what’s you
favorite set of turns?
A complex that just
fits the parameters of
your car, and when
you hit it right, its
just a pure feeling of
exhilaration. Of all the
different tacks that I
have driven in the past
three decades, about a half dozen turns stand
out from the rest.
exited the bowl. Hit it right is it was a pure
I spectated back in the late sixties, it became a
car collector.)
the college kids were there in force for their
RANDOM QUOTES
I have a mixed bag of random quotes that I‘ve
been toting around, waiting for someplace to
use them. Some are from the race weekend,
some were found on forums,
all are worth a giggle, at least
in my twisted world! Rather
than wait for a story to build
on each one, I present them to
you as they stand.
So here they are, enjoy,
and remember, if you have
anything you’ve overheard
and want to share, shoot
me an email. I can keep it
anonymous if need be.
“You ever watch Battlestar
Galactica, where they
hit the warp speed button
and take off? That’s what
my race start looked like.
Everyone hit theirs and
went Phhheeeewww!
Pheeeeeewwwww! Pheeeewwww!
past me. Except every time I hit
mine, all it did was get louder.”
“Ich Libre! The car! She will not
stop!‚“
“I did my run and the weather was clear. I
finished the run and got out of my car at the
summit of the Mt. Washington Hillclimb and
walked five feet away from it, just as a
cloud rolled in. I turned around and my
car was gone‚–invisible!.”
“We prefer MX5 prototype, throws non-car
folks off the estrogen scented trail.”
“Halfway home, I went, Huh?”
“So I was instructing at Bridgehampton, and I
had three students in my old Chevy Suburban.
I’m telling them you can take the downhill flat
out. I cross under the bridge at 100 mph, and
I’m pointing and telling them to stay to the
right, hit this apex, when halfway down
the hill I hear, ‚“KEEP
YOUR FREAKING
HANDS ON THE
WHEEL!”
“Add roll hoops and make it affordable and I’d
be all over that like rust on an Opel GT!”
“It takes 8,460 bolts to assemble an
automobile, and one nut to scatter it all over
the road.”
“Because encouraging cars (to race) that are
40 years old is twice as dumb as encouraging
cars 20 years old.”
“This car would sodomize a BMW M5, make
it conceive it’s illegitimate child (ever seen
an Infinity Q45?) and then dump its mother’s
lifeless shell in a gutter. Afterwards, it would
smoke a cigarette and laugh about it later to all
it’s SHO friends”–Craigslist ad for an SHO.
“If you thought the pig nosed subarus were
beautiful you need to look into lasik.”
“This is the worst thing ever. It is AIDS on
wheels.”
“It looks like it’s standing still, even when it’s
going fast.” - Nissan design chief
Shiro Nakamura, on the styling
of the Nissan Cube.
“If you want
to drive a well
prepared piece
of crap, email me
for details”
“Having a hot car and not getting to drive
it like it needs to be driven is like dating a
playboy bunny and just holding her hand.”
From the Editor
—continued from page 5
While were talking older tracks, Bryar was
interesting, nothing that really qualified as
superior, but it was a fun track nevertheless. I
just kept my Lime Rock rear end gear ratio and
just ran the track in third. It certainly saved on
the four hours of lying on your back changing
gears between races.
Lime Rock always my favorite, has never really
had a distinction of one dynamite set of turn
complexes. Again, with my small G-Prod car,
it was just see if you could do the whole track
(except Big Bend) without lifting (now that’s
exciting!) The uphill and down hill are a blast,
but, (maybe its me) The flat west bend was
always the tricky turn, especially since I needed
the speed to carry onto the straight away.
Pocono, every time I went there. it seemed
to have a different configuration. The track,
no matter what configuration was an endless
straight, coupled with the NHMS parking lot
autocross circuit...long straight speed, and
then really tight and twisty. Kind of a large
horsepower track, coupled with small car
agility...anyone have a car with that definition?
Watkins Glen, proved exhilarating as well..
probably the boot is the most fun, but the bus
stop at the end of the straight really got your
heart pumping.
Then there is Mid Ohio... a well defined track
for most any car no matter what power/
handling ratio it is.. there was something in
there for all. Although Madness, the uphill/
downhill corkscrew had to be the ultimate thrill
to execute well.
Still on the agenda, I would like to drive VIR...
who knows, in the future?
Send me a note, and tell me what you favorite
complex of turns are.
As I formatted all the results, I couldn’t help
but extend my congratulations to the Formula
Vee field at the the NHMS event (not so much
at LRP). You must have some kind of network
working to get so many entrants in one race.
Even after 40 plus years of continued class
participation.
I have always envied Formula Vee racers.
Without a doubt, Vees are what I consider the
most economical way to be in racing. The
rules through the years have remained very
consistent, tires are relatively inexpensive
and long lasting; You can tow with the family
sedan, (no turbo diesel f-150’s necessary), even
the trailer can be of a garden variety, that you
then can use to take trash to the dump. They
must be relatively easy to work on, and if need
be, there are always a source of specialist to
do your work that is well versed in the genre at
a realistic price.
Literally, I have had some come to me and ask
how they can get involved in racing without
going broke.. I reply Formula Vee! (Ok, Ok,
Spec Miata racers, I know, Spec Miata is a
good deal too, but a good Formula Vee can
be purchased for half the cost, and again, no
heavy duty trailering equipment is necessary....
an added bonus for the new racer.)
If it were not for a stroke of fate, I too, may
have been a Formula Vee racer.
Back in 1974 when I was in the market for
my first SCCA racer, (and on a very limited
budget) Elise and I drove up the Autodynamics
in Marblehead, one winter February afternoon
a few days after a snow storm..
After introducing myself to the sales/service
staff, I told them what I was looking for. Of
course, the price was really entry level, and
they had nothing with their Vees or Fords that
would have fit my budget...yet, one person
said, geez I got a Vee in my garage I will let
you have for $600. (this was when a brand
new Lola FF went for $7,500.) let me go get
it, its nearby, and I will tow it over for you to
review... just wait here.
Wait we did, and waited and waited.. no
sign of the owner of the Formula Vee. Finally,
one of the other sales persons said, he must
be having problems, I will take you there to
his garage... and off we went. When we got
there, we could see that someone had to spend
some time digging out the driveway, and the
garage was empty. Back to Autodynamics.
and you guessed it, the formula vee arrived
after we left, then left again, thinking we were
to impatient and had given up ..so it was a
complete case of missed connections just as
Gary Oldman in Immortal Beloved. Missed
opportunities. No Vee.
About three weeks later, I traveled down to
Long Island, New York, and picked up my (in
pieces) F-production MGA.. as they say, the
rest is history.
of life for us. But the organizers for Club
Racing as well as Solo and Rally-X continue
to work on program format to give you the
best bang for your buck and to welcome new
participants into our club. Paul Zahornasky and
Bob Beaulieu are taking the content from our
recently created NER promotional brochure and
transposing the format to a Facebook Website
to reach out to a wider audience. BOD member
Jerry Shields is working with webmaster Neil
Schelly and membership chair Paul Krysiak on
a strategy for providing the option to receive
Pit Talk electronically instead of hard copy,
which may be preferred by some club member
and will save on postage expenses. The New
Track Committee continues to work on a “path
forward” with the existing purchase and sales
agreement for the site in Palmer, MA. The club
has been supporting the effort by paying the
approximately $6000 monthly rent for the
land.
By the time you read this, our annual RAL
(Racing Against Leukemia) event will be just
around the corner on Aug 5th-7th. It’s the one
time when all groups, Club Racing, Solo, Rally
and Rally-X come together at NHMS to hold
their events and raise money for kids with
cancer. I have heard the expression on many
race days that “we are living the dream”.
Well, RAL is our opportunity to help some kids
in New England fight cancer, so they can
“live their dream”. I am inviting all of you to
come out to NHMS on RAL weekend to enjoy
the action and the company of fellow club
members. Plan to arrive at NHMS by 10 AM
Saturday or Sunday while our registration staff
is still at the front gate. Please check out www.
to enter this year’s race to
Beat Leukemia. Jody Fisher is heading up the
RAL Committee. If you have experience in fund
raising or would like to help these kids, please
NHMS – Why, Pilgrims, of course. The annual spring pilgrimage of NER Soloists to the New Hampshire Motor Speedway
placed the second points-paying event of the season in the books in fine fashion. A bit of a sprinkle or two was seen on the
windshield whilst on the drive to Loudon in the wee morning, but we were lucky to have clear blue skies throughout the day with
much rejoicing in the grid. Once in the paddock, it was noted that NHMS continues their improvement projects for 2011, with
landscaping and paving noted in several spots.
The Solo timing truck now has 3 side windows, thanks to Bill Gendron at Small Fortune Racing who convened with a few
members to assist with an install not long prior. NER just wouldn’t be the same without a few technical issues, and the need
for a few timer or radio parts was noted during the day as a “to-do” for future events.
85 Solo drivers added their exhaust notes alongside to the Club Racing heats that were going on ‘round the road-course
just over the grandstands. The parking lot asphalt had recently been awash with rains, and gaining traction on it in the
cool early May temps was going to be interesting. For some, the warmer afternoon gave the drivers a change to stretch their car and
skill capabilities a bit further than from the slippery a.m. heat. A total of 8 runs were offered on the day, making for a value for the
Novice Chris Fitzgerald picks up a cone. All Photo: Eddie Savage time and effort put forth towards the Sunday travel.
Novices numbered but 16, and Krisztian Kopasz drove a new N-BS, ‘11 Mitsubishi Evo
X to first on a final run 30.883, paxed to a 25.910. As novices are scored on Pax, this was a full 2/10’s ahead of Lawrence Coffin
in his N-STX MINI Cooper S, who scored a 31.705 (26.124) on his final run. The spread over the novice group was a few tenths
between each driver, not uncommon at NHMS, but yet notable for some, this being their inaugural autocross.
N-STU’s Chris Fitzgerald drove the Volvo S60R to a 33.156 (27.784), only 0.107 off of Jack Washington in the N-BS Subaru WRX.
Further down the line, fourteenth spot N-ES driver Zachary Veugen drove the Mazda Miata to a 35.591 (29.362), trailing 0.102
behind the thirteenth spot of the N-STX of Derek Schradieck. Randall Pratt ran short of eleventh spot by 0.073 with the N-BS BMW
Z4-powered last run 34.308 (28.784). Biggest improvers on the Novice field were Carolyn Green in her Mazda 3, running down
from a 46.9 to a 35.9 and Brian Pray in a Volvo S60, going from a 48.1 to a best of 36.4.
Pro saw only 9 drivers who kept much on the straight and
narrow (well, there was that one little right-hand sweeper…),
but with 29 cones overall. Grant Reeve took the Pro class
and Top Pax on a sixth run 27.580 (23.636) in the black
SS Corvette Z06. Grant had over 2/10’s on the second
place “finishers”, yes, a tie for 2 nd Pro. EP’s Brian Levesque
(27.694) and DSP’s Nate Whipple (28.317) both paxed-in
at 23.899. Down in eighth, Todd Kean was a mere 0.019
off from Matt Wilder, pitting the G-Fab ST-class Nissan
240SX against Matt’s STU WRX STi. Matt ran a 29.600
(24.804) to Todd’s 30.272 (24.823).
8 Open classes were single entries, and 8 other classes
staged with 2 drivers. Of note, Super Stock had Howard
Roundy and Russ Siggelkoe in their respective Loti trade a
set of +2’s and DNF’s. Russ got the better of Howard today
on a 29.223, just 0.008 quicker than Howard’s 29.231.
Over in the 4 car D-Stock field, Robert Woodsom took the
lead on a last blast 31.224 in the family MINI S. Jason Volk
broke up the MINI party, taking second in a Subaru WRX
with his 32.553, Stan Gorham took his MINI to third, and
MINI driver Cheryl Woodsom in fourth.
G-Stock also saw 4 drivers in near vintage metal, Honda
CRX against Toyota Corolla wagon. Not wanting to test fate
with their regular Solo ride still under repair, Allen and Josh
Parker drove their “crew vehicle” against the R-shod, Honda
CRX Si of Sam Creasey. Sam took the class on a 31.439,
with the Parker’s showing how much “list” can you induce
from an ol’ wagon! Matt Murray took H-Stock in his BMW
Moore Airfield – Final exams
and family get-to’s often cut the entry list for
a June event, and the weekend weather was
deemed “iffy” heading into pre-reg cutoff. Any
mention of the word “storm” was enough to send
the most dedicated Central Mass autocrosser
into deep lockdown for a few days, considering
the turmoil of the week before (read on). It
was pleasant to see 125 entries on the list for
the Sunday, and the weather was deemed
“acceptable” (damp with clearing) for those to
get out and cone to one’s heart content.
3 run groups for the day turned things around a
bit, with the first run group drivers getting wetruns,
but we had dry conditions for the afternoon
cycle. It was not June warm temperatures, but
November cool temperatures. As Bob Lang
remarked: “50 and rain is better than 40 and
snow.” Bob can skate with the TR6 in any
weather, but I digress....
Nate Whipple and Cliff Strout put together a
course that a few later remarked was a blast to
drive under the dry afternoon conditions. Along
that line, driving segments “wrong” was a bane
for cone-shaggers in several spots, or could
induce an excessive drifting turn, or a slideways
finish, shall we say.…So corner workers, you can
seek out Stephanie Z, Bryan M, and Bob D. and
a few others for a bout of “tsk tsk tsking”….
26 Novices ran the Moore Airfield course for
the 6-run event. Lawrence Coffin drove his
STX classed MINI S to a fourth run 53.887,
a 44.402 Pax. Had it not been for an errant
cone, his best would have been 2/10’s quicker.
It seems to me Lawrence is now ready for
Open Class warfare, and the Solo Rookie
School. James Ray took second in Novice in
the STU classed BMW540i, also on a fourth
run, beaming a 53.602 (44.918) but a full
half-second back. David Fried took his Hybrid
HS Honda CR-Z (excellent numbers for corner
workers) to third on a last run 58.629 (46.375).
8 Novices drove Miata’s of one form or another,
including Brian Springmann in the DSP classed
Club racer who had a 55.508 (46.848) and
Yavuz Kiremit holding a 60.181 (49.649).
Members of the SM-Honda CRX Kuehl family
were there, with Theresa Harcourt and Christine
Kuehl co-driving the crew-car Honda Fit.
Honorable mention to several rookie drivers took
15 seconds or more off from their first run: David
Oliveira, Sandi Moreno, Theresa, Christine,
Gabriel Ling, Ryan Giorgio and Drew Vander
Werf.
In the high-power SS and BS field, Russ
“Singlekone” Siggelkoe (49.151 +1) and
Barbara Seeger (49.290) easily drove past their
competitors. Carl Hayn get a nod for having
a yellow Corvette Z06 in Super Stock and not
being afraid to get it dirty during the drizzle
and grimey morning. Carl ran a last run best of
54.872. In C-Stock, Rob Mills got the best of his
dad, Chris, taking a fourth run 50.533. Chris
went 51.205 in the family Toyota MR3 Spyder.
Lev Benkin used a Mazda Miata to take third in
CS on a 58.046 having a DNF, 3 coned runs,
and a sight-seeing tour last run.
Ed Hondzinski won in D-Stock using his Subaru
WRX, nailing a last run 51.698, clearly putting
3 MINI’s and another WRX back by a full gate.
Second in DS went to Robert “tire smoke and
torque steer” Woodsom with a fifth run 52.428.
E-Stock created 16 cone counts, 10 from class
winner Bryan Mancuso in the Toyota MR2.
Bryan’s best came on the fourth pass, being his
ONLY CLEAN RUN of 51.474.
Terence Davidovits (Read Terence’s mind: good
thing that fast guy with the blue ‘stang was in
Pro….) took the 3-car F-Stock field with his black
Ford Mustang GT by 0.245 on a final pass
of 54.922, almost a full second quicker than
his prior pass. The BMW M5 of Chris Strock
(55.167) was slowly gaining on TD with each
run, and Phil Gott (57.146) found his Hemi
Orange Dodge Challenger was attracted to
orange cones, picking up 4 overall, and 2 on his
last run.
BSP was end-of-story after the fifth run of Marc
Monnar, who pushed the Mazda RX-8 to a
48.353 (Pax of 15 th ), a full 1.3 seconds over
Joshua Noble and his WRX. Daryl Beck brought
out the 1984 diesel VW Jetta for XP, meeting up
against the 1994 Mitsubishi Evolution of Alex
Grabau. As I was looking at the elder Evo on
Novice Brian Springmann in the DSP Miata learning that three rights
make a left. All Photos: Eddie Savage
the line, wondering why there was a passenger
but no driver, off it went! I then found out it’s a
right-hand drive. Alex retired the roll-caged Evo
after 2 runs, standing on a 52.826 (+1), while
Daryl took a fourth run best, and diesel clean, of
56.849.
Alex wasn’t the only to retire after just a few
runs. Josh Parker and Stacey Strout in the
Reynard A-Mod (new motor installed but needs a
tweak), Mike Steere in EP, Bob Totten in DM and
Bill Gendron in BM all did 3 and retired. The
Street Touring folk were heavy at lobbing orange
plastic around, notably Stephanie Zadrozny,
punting 16 into the hinterlands. Roger Whipple
took the 6-driver class with a 50.668 in the
Honda. Wiley Cox, co-driving the PandaSpeed
Nissan 240SX of Jenna D’Amico, took fourth on
a 52.677, just 0.002 shy of Dam Imber and his
5 drivers ran in STR. Mark Dudek took stock with
a last run 49.860 in the BMW Z4, taking over
the lead from Justin Lau in the Mazda MX-5.
Justin could only answer with a 49.887, trailing
by 0.027. STX - 10 cars - cool! Jeff Anderson’s
fifth run in the Mazda RX-8 of 50.071 held off
David Gott in the BMW 330 by 4/10’s. Charlie
Thompson in the MINI was third, another 3/10’s
back.
Jason Fair won SM, Kathy Barnes took SMF,
and Brian Kuehl was tops in SSM. In the Kart
Kaverns, Paul Bowin took the 6-driver “KK” class
on a final run 47.456, 6/10’s over Eric Krueger.
Chang Ho Kim, Sarah Bowin, Dan Boudria and
Paul Zahornasky finished that list. Ian Krueger
took JKA with a 52.735 over Evan Woodsom
and Allison Krueger. Adam Woodsom was a
single entry in JKB running on a 67.633, as was
Kimsoo Gopnik in JKC with a best of 71.271.
Pro had 14 drivers, among was Mark Daddio
with his new blue Ford Mustang GT. Running
in Pro-FS, it had one autocross under its hood
from smaller venue back home, and Mark was
looking to ply its wares. Saying it was “loose,
loose, loose” (but could be adjusted), Mark
ran a last run 47.694 raw (Pax 39.442). That
however, was only good for second, being
0.051 short of David White, who ran the G-Fab
Nissan 240SX (more new parts) to a last run
45.330, with an SM Pax of 39.391. Note
to corner workers: David made you run for 5
cones. David scored FTD with that run, too.
2-thumbs up, David.
Using the “way back a few weeks” machine, a
group of NER-ites were heady (righty so) after
their trip to the New Jersey SCCA Pro Solo May
21-22, at the Meadowlands. The following
local members came home with the gold. Class
Champions were Grant Reeve, Lynne Rothney-
Kozlak, PJ Corrales, Scott Thursby, Matt Murray
and Mark Daddio. The SCCA Solo National
Tour was in Dover 2 weeks later, and NER
Champions were Bud Collins, Lynn Collins, Billy
Davis, Matt Murray, Kathy Barnes, PJ Corrales,
and Bob Barone.
Congratulations to all.
For those wondering about my lead-in, Central
Mass was hit with 3 tornado’s on June 1st.
Cutting a swath of destruction from Springfield to
Southbridge, 3 persons were killed and millions
in damages wrought. A few of us were close
to its path, but non-closer than Bill Gendron of
Monson. Bill lives “just” outside the center of
town, and it was an anxious overnight waiting to
hear of any information of him, his town, friends
or family. Bill and his family escaped without
harm, but as he said, “Monson will never be the
same.” The quote by Mr. Donato made me think
of Bill. Bill would probably arrange a shopping
cart race in town for a good-cause event (and
probably win), but the event Mother Nature dealt
us was no laughing matter.
NER is a family, extending from here to way
yonder out there wherever you are reading this.
So if you can, please consider a donation to
help friends and family of our members and their
community to get back to a sense of normalcy.
John Branford knew - he put it best: There, but
for the grace of God, go I.
sweeps up “not her oil!” Photo: Eddie Savage
318i with a 30.714, while Jonathan Havener
took his economy go-getter to a very respectable
33.784 in the class. Over in BSP, the 4 drivers
put on a good show, with Marc Monnar up front.
Marc took the white Mazda RX-8 (with nicely
contrasting color numbers) to a last run 28.632.
Josh Noble in the Subaru WRX STi was second
on his last run 28.880.
Mike Steere got to experience the joy of driving
Brian Levesque’s EP Honda, and was thinking of
scrounging scrap lumber to attach to his feet so
he could manipulate the pedals with much less
strrrrretching effort. In spite of the size difference
between them within the cockpit, Mike took a
29.373 home on his sixth run. Mike is one who
never fails to please a photographer who may
be shooting the finish line turn….Bob Lang was
all-over the place with lite-grip, orange magnet
Hoosiers, but managed a 29.331 on run 7.
Bill Goodale and Stacey Strout shared A-Mod
Dragon duty, with Bill grabbing a fourth run
25.269 to Stacey’s fourth run best 25.304, just
a 0.035 difference. Bill took FTD on the day. The
ST class was only 3, and both Roger Whipple
and Stephanie Zadrozny ran the Honda Civic
best on their seventh runs. Roger took a 31.115,
to Stephanie’s 31.250, a split of 0.135.
Jenna D’Amico had a fourth run best in the
PandaSpeed Nissan 240SX, at 32.339.
STS saw Shane Landry take his Mazda Miata to
a fourth run best of 31.667 over Steven Flesher,
piloting the Miata owned by Pro competitor, Ben
Wagstaff. Stephen put forth a 31.747. Between
the 2 drivers in STS, effort was apparent; they
had 7 dirty run between them. Justin Lau took
Matt Thompson in STR, with Justin’s Mazda MX-5
running a 29.960 to Matt’s MX-5 powered run
of 30.377.
STX fielded 8 drivers, and it could have gone
to any of the top 4 of them. David Gott was the
winner of the class poll in his BMW 330ci on a
last run 30.044. David led co-driver Derek Sivret
(30.246) by 0.20, Charlie MINI Thompson
(30.553) by another 0.30, and Jeff RX8
Anderson (30.604) by an added 0.051. Only
David was clean all day, a testament to the effort
the other drivers put out to shave fractions of
seconds. Honorable Mention shout-out to Joanna
Ellis who always has a moment to say “Hi”, and
ran her MINI to a 33.094.
SSM saw 4 drivers, and was led by Don Kuehl
in the mod-Honda CRX on a 29.965. Patrick
Heck drove his Lotus Elise with Gusto, to a
30.474, falling 0.001 oh so shy of the 2nd
place finisher, William “Bill” Salie. Cameron
Bosnic ran the vintage Datsun 240z to a
32.709. Of note was Bill and his new car. Bill
was trolling through eBay Motors one night and
accidentally hit the “Buy-it Now” button on a
2002 Chevy Corvette Z06….luckily he liked the
color, so he decided to keep it. In delivered trim,
“thrifty value bargain bin” previous owner struts,
parts and all, he turned in second place with a
30.473. As Bill would say: “it needs some lovin’
in the suspension department.”
It was the Adult Karts that proved numerically
tightest all the day, swapping positions almost
every run, up to days end. Worthy of watching
every driver take his or her run, the 6 kart drivers
ran the final range from 26.753 to 27.337. Eric
Krueger lead with a seventh run 26.753. Chang
Ho Kim was second on a 26.762, just 0.009
off, then Sarah Bowin (26.871), Paul Bowin
(26.871), Paul Zahornasky (27.236) and Scott
Bowin (27.337). Thank you all for the exciting
battle.
JKA was taken by Ian Krueger on a fifth
run 29.605, with Allison Krueger and
Evan Woodsom on a 32.184 and 35.138,
respectively. JKB was between Isaac Miskoe
and Adam Woodsom. Isaac ran a last run
38.697, and Adam, a last run of 39.156. FJC
saw Kimsoo Gopnik on a sixth run 38.522, and
Nicole Zahornasky with a last run 58.886. Take
a few moments at the next event if you can, and
watch the driver changeover in JKC. Kimsoo will
get out of the kart, swap neck braces to Nicole
and help get her competitor out on track faster
than you can find that dollar bill you may have
just accidentally dropped.
Coming up for Solo is our return to Devens
(Points #3 on June 12 and Points #4 on July
17), with the Solo Novice/Intermediate Drivers
School slated for Saturday, July 16. So if you’re
an eager Novice and think you can really drive,
and you’ve never attended a Solo school, I’ll
wager you can’t drive yet. Take the school. Trust
me, grasshopper. Check the Solo pages of the
website for more details.
With warmer climes on the way, the Race
Against Leukemia Weekend at NHMS will be
sure to follow, too. Watch the ner.org website,
or Pit Talk magazine for more donation and
pledge information, run schedules and other
items of note to help in the UMass battle against
the disease.
Be seeing you!
SCCA NHMS
Triple Regional,
Memorial Day
Weekend,
May 28-29
2011
By: Elizabeth Winiarfz, FF Swift
DB-1, #73
This race report comes from a Formula
Ford car owner who was flagging for the
weekend.
My assignment on Saturday was corner
3, Sunday was 10. Thank you NHMS for
adding a taller wall in front of the flagstand
at 3. This is a much needed improvement!
Race group 1 (FB,FC,FE,FF,DSR):
on Saturday had a spirited race at the
front between a group of 9 FB, FC and
FE cars. The leader was Shawn McClure
#37 black FB who put a good distance
between himself and the rest of the pack.
Further back there was healthy competition
between Alan Walker’s #69 blue Swift
and Geoff Rainville’s #93 red Van Diemen.
Todd McAfee brought out his DB-1 for the
weekend and James Price came to race.
The Sunday morning race was lively, with
excellent, warm conditions. By the afternoon
the #69 and #93 had both retired . The
winners in FE were Joe Sammut and Roger
Feghali with Doug Rocco winning in FC.
Race Group 2. Nothing comes close to the
excitement of watching a pack of Miatas 3-wide
and 6-deep all heading into corner 3 together.
So, who’s going to be chicken and brake first? I
have been known to hold onto my headphones
and scream out loud before laughing with glee
as everyone somehow scrunches together and
gets through the turn and up the hill without
incident. I bet the flaggers in 3 experience
almost as much of an adrenaline rush as the
drivers.
Race Group 3, SRF, provided lots of
excitement. On Saturday Scoobie Doo #36
of Kevin Treffeisen won race 1. On Sunday
morning after leading the whole race he pulled
off during the last lap. Three cars had battled
behind him, lap after lap, swapping places and
even going 3-wide all the way up the hill at turn
3! Who knew that could be done without side
to side contact? The three were James Regan #0
blue, Joseph Wolf #42 blue/silver and David
Mailhot #55 blue/white. Well done guys!
Group 4 featured a battle up front between
the #63 Flatout blue/yellow driven by Craig
McHaffie, the #70 of Jimmy Locke and the #80
of James Daoust. I had to check the registration
list to see what color the #70 would be – his
choice “rusty”, my choice “aubergine”. But,
color aside, on Saturday #63 started from the
back and worked his way through the pack to
finish 3 rd. In both Sunday races #63 finished 1st,
but not without stiff competition from #70 and
#80.
Group 5 was small but mighty. Just 9 cars
entered and the field was dominated by Peter
Faill in the #77 blue Porsche. In race 3 Bob
Tucker in #64 green Porsche kept Peter looking
in his mirrors. It was not the best weekend for
Maurizio Cerasoli in the orange #80 Porsche
944 who pulled off during all three races.
Group 6 was led by Rob Driscoll in the
white#25 BMW325i who won races 1 and
2. Jeff Henderson in a white#23 BMW 325i,
Robert Thiele in a blue/green #21 BMW328is,
Glenn Lawton in #14 white/blue Mazda RX7
and Chris Outzen in a green #93 BMWZ3
all duked it out at the front in all of the
races. Near the end of the Saturday
afternoon race Bob Blake #82 white/
blue Mazda RX7 spun in 11 and stopped,
facing traffic. Under yellow waving flag
condition several cars went by safely but
Tim Mullen #86 black VW Golf ran into
the stopped #82. Fortunately both drivers
were all right, but let this be a reminder
that the yellow flag means that you should
slow down and be cautious. Expect the
unexpected!
Group 7, FV, was fun to watch. Jon Van
de Car in the #35 drove like he was shot
out of a cannon to win on Sunday morning.
Everyone looked racy. Even Tom Galuardi
was passing competitors with the loaf
shaped cover over his oil cooler. Welcome
back Dennis Richardson in the Miami
blue #53. And congratulations to Anthony
Parker #12 back for winning on both
Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
Group 8 ITA, IT7 and SSB was led by
the same three cars on Saturday afternoon
and Sunday morning. These were #11 red
Acura Integra driven by L. Timothy Klvana,
#99 red/black Acura Integra driven by Geoff
Branscombe and #43 white/red Mazda
Miata driven by James Alley. On Sunday,
in Race 3 the #1 yellow Pontiac Solstice
driven by Bob Demers managed to break into
this block to finish ahead of Alley. Quite an
accomplishment!
On Saturday James Price, a driver from Group
1, volunteered as a flagger for part of the
afternoon. So did Steve and Melissa Introne.
Drivers are always welcome to help with
Flagging and Communications. If you ever
have some time to spare, consider spending
a few hours with flaggers or up in the control
booth at race control.
Bruce Rodman FV #55 yellow/ black took care
of lots of the behind the scenes planning for this
weekend. Thank him and the other volunteers
for making these race weekends possible!
If you have a race car sitting in your garage….
What are you waiting for? Come out and
play!
Speak My Mind
— continued from page 4
Mazda 3: Definitely the sportiest of the
bunch. Available in 4 door sedan and 5 door
hatchback. Nice little car if you can live with
cramped back seat and the big, plastic smile that
Mazda calls a front grill.
Chevy Cruze: Let's face it, GM's hasn't shown
much in the way of success with small cars.
Remember the Vega, the Chevette, the Monza,
and my personal favorite for biggest piece of
dung ever built, the Oldsmobile Firenza. Now
they have the Cruze. Based upon what I've
read, GM finally got it right. Still not the best in
class, but closer to the top. I've seen plenty of
these around, so people must be buying them
(or maybe they go to the dealer looking for a
Volt and realize that they can buy the Cruze and
a couple years worth of gas for the price of the
Volt)
Ford Focus: Finally, the USA gets the same (or
virtually the same) Focus as Europe. The motor
press is heaping high praise on this car. I think
it looks nicer in person than in pictures and can
be had as a 4 door sedan or 5 door hatchback.
It's definitely on my 'must drive' list, so I'll reserve
final judgment till then. But here's hoping it's as
good as it sounds.
Dodge Hornet/Chrysler 100: Still being
developed and the Dodge name isn't set in
stone. Should be a small Fiat/Lancia/Alfa with
Dodge/Chrysler styling cues and Americanized
interior. Slated as a 2013 model. No comments
yet.
What was Toyota Thinking!
Kyle Busch recently made the news for going
128 mph in a 45 mph zone, not far from his
home. Normally I'm a Kyle hater, but I can't
really blame him 100% for this one.
Yes, he broke the law, but Toyota gave him a
Lexus LFA supercar to test drive. Did they think
he was going to drive it slow? The car's meant to
compete with Porsche, Ferrari, and Lamborghini.
You think any young adult that's given the keys'
to this car is going to drive within the speed
limit?
Let's Go for a Drive
If your a member of the SCCA, it goes without
saying that we love cars. Yes we use them for
commuting to work, getting groceries, and
hauling the family around, but underneath we
really like driving. Despite what the 'greenies'
may say about pollution and $4+ a gallon gas
be damned, I encourage everyone (that can
legally drive and in accordance with the law)
to go for a drive just for the fun of it. Enjoy
your vehicle, enjoy the scenery, and enjoy the
adventure.
Off Camber
— continued from page 5
As for setup I run the Fisher Price “My first
autocross car” setup on mine.”
“STU has managed to convince a LOT of people
to throw a lot of money at an expensive new car
and make it slower.”
“Just checking, but its the same amount of work
to do that to a Civic as it is to do it to something
that will look cool when you’re done, right?”
“I think something might be wrong with timing, it
just said some crappy looking car ran a 56.”
“Dude, gold bond is awesome. It’s like an altoid
for your crotch.”
“You’ve got to squeeze on the gas like you
squeeze your woman. Don’t squeeze enough
and ain’t nothing gonna happen....squeeze too
hard and you’re gonna get smacked!”
“Well to tell you the truth I’d rather have all my
teeth rot away than drive a Civic, but to each his
own.”
Got a story to share? Send them to me at
slfunk59@hotmail.com, or find me at the track.
Until the next time — for the fun of it!
