Vision
A community supporting young people to
realise their potential; forever learning,
forever teaching, in the service of
humanity.
Mission
To provide a unique student centred
learning space that embraces an
integrated, holistic and balanced
approach to children’s education.
Using a developmental education model,
we encourage our students to acquire the
emotional, social, physical, cognitive and
spiritual competencies that will enable
them to lead purposeful, fulfilling lives.
their teens. Bill Jennings was fantastic as
our guest presenter. He has a wonderful
capacity to create a space to hold
meaningful conversations. His focus on
creating memories and connections is a
unique powerful approach for parenting
support.
A huge thank you goes to our graduated
students who returned with their Mums
and Dads to support our families through
this experience. Special thanks to Bonnie
(the organiser extra-ordinaire), Kalindi,
Christine and Greg for their support.
But most importantly a huge thanks to the
Mums, Dads and carers and the children
of Class 6 -7 for attending. It takes
courage to step into an unknown process,
so we thank you for your willingness.
Can’t wait for next year’s instalment as we
build towards a four day parent/child
camp in the High School years.
FACILITATOR’S NEWS
Last year I attended a conference titled
‘Building Positive Parent Communities’. I
was working on a goal to create some
contemporary pathways to support our
families that would compliment what we
do at Silkwood and was looking to find
inspiration to support me with this. At this
conference I found loads of great ideas
and inspiration, but one in particular
stood out as being a match for what I was
looking for. This was a session I attended
with Bill Jennings, a presenter of
parent/child workshops called TIME &
SPACE www.time-space.com.au
It wasn’t long into the workshop before I
knew this was something special, unique
and a good fit for Silkwood. Of course I
was first in line after the workshop to
start talking partnerships … and so began
an exciting new chapter in Silkwood’s
community life.
This week we launched our first step by
holding a Dads and Daughters and a
Mothers and Sons evening for our Class 6
and 7 families. I was honoured to attend
both. They were fabulous evenings filled
with meaningful conversations and
connections. They have created for our
young people a wonderful memory to
carry with them and draw on through
fundamental decision towards your child’s
future, therefore we require all parents or
HOME LIFE
Enrolling your child at Silkwood is a
decision that is not only an educational
choice but a lifestyle choice. We have
found that success for children at
Silkwood is enhanced by a home life that
encourages children to have;
• clear boundaries and expectations
for behaviour
• a respect for our environment,
animals and people
• family meal times with healthy,
wholesome home cooked food
• special ceremonies and traditions
• plenty of time for creative play and
physical activity
• family games and entertainment
• a love of books, music, art and craft
We ask that our families choose lifestyles
that cherish the developmental stages of
childhood as they are short lived and each
needs nurturing and developing.
IN OUR LIBRARY
Children finding those quiet spaces to
engage and escape into books.
The classics “Little Women” and “The
Faraway Tree” still proving to be favourite
reads.
The most popular games played every
break time by CL 3 students –
Mastermind and Guess Who ?? – great
synergy – working together so all have an
opportunity to join in the fun !!!!!!
CLASS 1 WATTLE NEWS
What have we been up to…
We have had an exciting few weeks. The
children attended a magic show last week
and we have been having a wonderful
time making our puppets.
MAIN LESSON
We have continued the counting and
patterns theme for our main lesson
session. Next week we will begin our final
theme for the term- Autumn. On Monday
the children will walk into a different
space as it will be decorated in Autumn
tones and pictures.
PROFICIENCY LESSONS
During English we have been practising
recognising and learning about when
upper case letters appear in sentences.
Each week children continue to practice
shaping and forming letters during main
lesson and proficiency lessons.
HPE
During HPE we will have been doing
circuit rotations using bean bags, balls,
skipping ropes and hoops. It would be
great if two more parents would like to
help out during this time as we are
working in small groups. Please come and
speak with me if you are available.
EE
Children are learning about various forms
of rubbish such as compost, recyclable
materials (cardboard, plastic, metal and
paper) and actual waste. We learned that
over half of the rubbish in our bins at
home can be composted and we were
thinking of ways we can reduce the size of
our actual waste every week.
CRAFT
Children are stitching with Cheryl.
SOCIAL SKILLS
We have been reading through and
discussing concepts from the book “The 7
habits of happy kids” by Sean Covey. This
week we will be talking about the habit of
thinking win- win.
GENERAL / REMINDERS
I just wanted to take this opportunity to
thank all the parents that are giving their
time to help out in class. Thank you.
THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO
MAIN LESSON
We are finishing off our Counting Patterns
main lesson this week. We’ve enjoyed
sharing Yanto’s journey and learning
about the amazing patterns that numbers
can make. We discovered that number
patterns can be learned through skipping,
chanting, movement and rhyme.
PROFICIENCY LESSONS
In math we’ve been concentrating on how
to read and write 2 digit numbers.
ENGLISH
Our learning has centred around sight
word games and the lower case alphabet.
HPE
We’ve been focusing on how exercise and
nutrition keeps us healthy. Our learning
has focused on cooperative games using a
range of whole body movements.
EE / ENVIRONMENTAL ED
Each week we work on a rotational basis
to cover a range of activities. The compost
collection is now in full swing, with a
group of children making their way
around the school each Wednesday
afternoon to collect class scrap buckets,
empty and return.
Other activities have been planting seeds,
compost maintenance, and environmental
based art.
CLASS 3 TALLOW NEWS
What have we been up to…
MAIN LESSON
Measurement…..Our new Main Lesson.
We have explored the historical and
hysterical ways of measuring. We’ve used
and manipulated parts of body; even our
whole body to explore the wonderment
of measurement. This week we
excelled….we even managed to measure
the height of some of the tallest poles in
our school grounds….and all without a
harness! We used a method once used by
a traveller who wanted to measure the
ancient pyramids of Egypt. We used the
sun! FYI: The large light-pole at the edge
of the oval is 63 Shaper Feet!
PROFICIENCY LESSONS
We have been creating patterns using
subtraction and addition.
HPE
Through strategic planning our game has
manifested from a four team event, to a
two team play off. We are all becoming
much better team players!
EE
Collecting household data has shown us
how much water we use for personal use.
SOCIAL SKILLS
To learn, we often have to start with the
CLASS 3 WATTLE NEWS
MAIN LESSON
Length and Time is our main lesson for the
rest of the term. We experimented with
Thales’ notion of measuring objects by
measuring their shadows today. Thank
goodness it wasn’t raining. The children
have been having fun testing out their
furlongs against other children by carrying
bags of sand.
PROFICIENCY LESSONS
We have been working on describing,
completing and creating number patterns
using addition and subtraction. For some
children it has been a lesson in
perseverance, they have had to learn that
the answer doesn’t always jump out at
them.
HPE
Lots of fun and noise was heard as we
played our four goals team game last
Friday. A rematch is scheduled for this
Friday.
EE
The children are surveying their family’s
water use this weekend. Many will be
surprised how much their family uses.
SOCIAL SKILLS
We have been learning that proactive
choices often means saying NO to a
friend. This can be difficult to do but
ultimately you are responsible for your
own actions.
Annette
CLASS 4 TALLOW NEWS
What have we been up to…
MAIN LESSON
We have started our forebears Main
Lesson which seems to be a great hit.
Most children have interviewed their
grandparent in preparation for their
project. We visited Paradise Country
yesterday where we saw heaps of old
artifacts, gold panning, went to Clancy’s
mine and saw some really cute animals.
Next Tuesday we are heading to the old
village in Beenleigh. The children will get
first hand experience of an old school
house!
PROFICIENCY LESSONS
In English we have been working on
setting and what a plot is in the narrative
genre. They all are very enthusiastic about
what they can write, what problem can
they create to fix. In Maths we are
persevering with 2 digit multiplication
using a range of strategies to help us
understand it.
HPE
Archery continued last week but as the
weather was so wet on Monday Ana took
the class for team building skills. It was so
funny to watch each group working
together for a common goal. They had a
great time.
EE
We are continuing on our Water Project. I
have had a basic experiment outside so
the children can see first hand what the
water cycle is all about. This project is
done at school
SOCIAL SKILLS
Finishing off the last of our 7 habit skills,
my favourite Sharpening the Saw!!
Making sure you have time for you, else
everything you’ve worked hard for can
just break down.
Joanna
PREP NEWS
What have we been up to…
MAIN LESSON
Children have been exploring different
styles of lines through movement, art,
story telling, discussion and song. They
have begun creating their Bindi the Rabbit
main lesson book, which follows the story
of Bindi and friends as they hop, fly, swim
and jump. What will Bindi get up to next
week?
GROUP TIME
Our group time is proving to be a highlight
of the day, with many of the children
expressing a fondness for that particular
part of our rhythm. To our puzzles and
practical life station, we have added a
range of pre handwriting/fine motor skills
exercises for children to explore.
Following an autumn theme, this week
our painters have been exploring red and
yellow and what happens when the two
colours meet. We are in the process of
creating beautiful invitations to our
Autumn Festival.
The Starbright children have been
immersing themselves in world flags
through puzzles and drawing. They have
been learning where to locate Australia,
Japan, Italy, New Zealand and England on
a world map.
HPE
This week the Moonlight children played
an Albanian hopscotch game called Varra.
They also had fun hiding a wooden block
for their friends to find in a Native
American game, Hide and Switch. We
look forward to playing a game of South
African marbles – Dithwai – and an Italian
game with song, Angels and Trolls. If any
of the Prep families would like to share a
traditional game with the children, we
would be most excited to learn it!
EE
We are looking forward to catching up
with Natura Education again in the next
couple of weeks. They helped us create
our mini composts and we bet that just
like us, they will be thrilled to see how our
composts of been decomposing. We have
been discussing the importance of healthy
soil. Speaking of healthy soil, a big thank
you to the Moonlight mums, who have
been tending to our garden. It is looking
more and more beautiful and it will smell
just delightful with the addition of
fragrant herbs and flowers.
Starbright were unbelievably lucky to
witness a Monarch Butterfly emerging
from it’s cocoon during morning circle!
What a delightful surprise.
CRAFT / LOTE
We have begun creating two, large sheets
of felt in both classrooms. How wonderful
to see layers of beautiful colours coming
together. We can’t wait for the end
result.
The children are getting better and better
at finger knitting and sewing. Our current
project is the creation of drink bottle
holders so that we have a handy place to
store our water when we go on
excursions.
SEVEN HABITS
Children have been involved in brainstorm
and discussion about their ideal classroom
and in writing their classroom mission
statement. Next week we continue to
immerse ourselves in habit two, begin
with the end in mind, by exploring ideas
about goal setting (as simple as baking
bread) and the steps required in reaching
goals.
THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO
We are enjoying the preparations for our
Autumn Festival, which is on Wednesday
28 th March. Parents have been notified
and an official invitation, made by the
children, will be sent home in the next
week.
What have we been up to…
Class 5 and 6 recently participated in
workshops produced by Enlighten
Education and Peer Power where they
discussed issues relating to gender,
identity and self esteem.
Here’s a couple of quotes from two boys
who participated in the workshop…
"Today I learnt how to be a mature top
bloke. You've got to stick up for friends,
think about others, help people no matter
what and talk to others."
"It was fun learning how to be a mature
top bloke and that not to be passive. I
liked how they presented all of how to be
a mature top bloke."
PROFICIENCY LESSONS
5 Tallow is absolutely flying in proficiency
as we practice lots of new concepts and I
congratulate so many of my students who
are electing to pre teach themselves new
concepts via the links I am emailing home
via parent email contacts. Well done 5
tallow legends!
HPE
Tearing up the lanes at Nerang pool in
preparation for our upcoming swimming
abilities.
EE
We are all a flutter with our Whirly gigs
and weather vanes project. Our heads are
spinning with ideas and we’re having fun
experimenting with new technologies to
try out.
SOCIAL SKILLS
The Class 5 Tallow children are reflecting
CLASS 6 NEWS
What have we been up to…
MAIN LESSON
We have nearly concluded our studies of
the Geography of the SW Pacific. Our
studies have included knowing the
locations of our SW Pacific neighbours as
well as their climates and the impacts of
climate change. Andrew has kindly taught
us how to navigate using a compass and
Class 6 has studied different ecosystems
including those of the marine world. This
has been fully realised in an outing to Sea
World accompanied by the intrepid Pam,
Andi, Rebekah and Michelle. Thankyou
ladies! The students have been quite
industrious with bringing musical
instruments and choreographing dance
moves to ‘My Island Home’. We have also
had a dose of Tongan culture by learning
linguistic phrases, national costume,
crafts, nursery rhymes and a stint of
traditional Tongan dancing, and Andi will
generously share her Maori culture in a
workshop.
PROFICIENCY LESSONS
In maths we are continuing with length,
perimeter, area and scale with students
working through their set tasks and
games. At the moment The World
Education Games are being hosted via the
internet so the students have been
participating intermittently. In English we
are aiming towards a creative writing
piece, but first we are covering
foundational topics such as sentence
writing and tense construction. We were
inspired by the visiting author Tristan
Bancks who regaled us with hilarious
accounts of characters in his books.
HPE
Swimming has continued with even one of
the swimming teachers commenting to
me how the students have improved. I
also saw some promising racing diving off
the starting blocks. As of this Monday we
will begin our AFL Interschool Sports
tournament, and fitness continues on a
daily basis with Class 6 showing promise
in baton relays around the oval.
EE
Environmental Education has continued
with studying weathering and erosion.
This included a creek/bush walk around
Silkwood to observe the effect weathering
has on nature and where erosion has
taken place and how humans have
compensated. This walk ended with the
students enjoying a paddle in the creek.
Enterprise Education saw the final launch
of the water rockets. Everyone has
participated and there were some
phenomenal rockets with Sammie M’s
and Hannah’s rocket reaching
approximately 20ms and landing in a tree!
So thank you to those parents who
spurred on that project.
CRAFT / LOTE
We have continued with puppetry and the
students have undertaken writing a short
script and performing with the puppets
that they have already made. We will
continue with making sock puppets and
puppets out of fabric as well as a range of
other puppets throughout the semester.
SOCIAL SKILLS
Social skills will elaborate on the topic of
relationships, social media and bullying
with an explanation of Silkwood’s
protocol regarding bullying. We will also
be replying to our pen pals in Germany
who have written to us. On Monday and
Tuesday evening we had a successful
workshop that involved fathers and
daughters, mothers and sons. It was
beautiful to see these conversations
taking place.
THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO
We are definitely looking forward to
Andi’s Maori presentation on Thurs
08/03/2012 which is both a privilege and
an honour to spend time in someone
else’s culture. The start of AFL on Monday
will be very exciting especially for a
Victorian like me! We also have Louis’s
birthday on Thurs 08/03/2012 as well as
Beth’s before the end of term. Natura Ed
is an educational group who visit schools
and teach students about the
environment and they will be hosting a
session in Week 8.
Just some little observations throughout
the fortnight:
A big congratulations to Angus for a very
impressive main lesson book - well done!
A shout out to Fraser for the effort he is
making.
A thank you to Kalila for organising the
music.
A thank you to Georgia for organising the
choreography.
A ‘go Lara’ and ‘go Toby’ for ALWAYS
being attentive and on the ball.
To those quiet Warrior Cats - Sammie M
and Ollie who are so reliable and just get
on with it.
CLASS 7 NEWS
MASTERCHEF
And the masterful creations continue!
We've had the most amazing food
samplings over the past few weeks in
Class 7 and the adult critics - Cheryl,
Christine, Andrew, Mack, Treva, myself
and other guests have been wowed by the
quality of the cooking execution and
presentation of the dishes - not to
mention adhering to the school's nutrition
policy as well. Jacob has made his own
pasta for ravioli and Mina has made her
own pizza dough as the photos show and
all of the meals have been simply
delicious! We're looking to create a
cookbook, as these dishes are well worth
sharing.
CHEMICAL TESTING
As part of their Environmental Ed. studies,
Class 7 conducted some specific tests of
our creek water to test for phosphate
residues, PH levels, turbidity and dissolved
oxygen. Even though we've had lots of
rain, the creek seems to be in good health
and we'll add the chemical profiling to the
macro-invertabrate studies in our final
data analysis.
BODY INQUIRY PROJECTS
Class 7 undertook an inquiry about a body
system of interest as part of their 'Taking
Care of Ourselves' Main Lesson studies.
Class 7 love the opportunity to lead the
class and Sophie and James did a fantastic
job of educating us further about the knee
and in particular, ACL (Anterior Cruciate
Ligament) as James is an expert in this
area! All of the group and individual
presentations were top quality - they're
great public speakers and creative in their
presentation modes too.
TAKING CARE OF OURSELVES
Class 7 had Moz and Lucy visit us as part
of our Main Lesson studies on 'Taking
Care of Ourselves'. Moz talked to the
class about what it was like to care for a
young baby and be a mother and Lucy
entertained us all with her smiles, noises
and gestures. The students then analysed
the Pros, Cons and Questions about caring
for a baby and pondered the journey from
infancy to adolescence and changes in
responsibilities.
CHILDREN’S HEALTH
General Well-being
We are concerned for each student’s total
well-being. When they are not 100% well,
or even too tired, it can be difficult for
students to cope with the demands of an
active school day. Many childhood
illnesses are contagious. Please keep your
children home until they are 100% well.
Staff are trained in basic first aid and care
for any first aid needs that may arise.
It is important that your child has a
nutritious protein rich breakfast before
school. It is difficult for children to
concentrate on their school lessons on an
empty stomach.
Infectious Diseases
It is important for the health of the school
community that children are kept away
from school whilst they have a
communicable disease. We ask you to
immediately notify the school and to keep
your children at home during the period
of their infection.
HEARTS TO HANDS
PARENT CRAFT GROUP
Hey There Crafty Folk!
There have been lots of busy hands and
happy voices over the last two weeks at
Heart 2 Hands.
Our reshuffle of the schedule didn’t
dampen anyone’s enthusiasm (nor has
the interchangeably steamy and wet
weather for that matter!). We must start
with a big thanks to everyone for all your
efforts so far this term. A particular thanks
must go to those who have been taking
the time to help set up and pack up (it can
be a big job so all help is gratefully
received) along with those lovely women
among us who bring along home-baked
treats to share. Last, but by no means
least, thank you to the lovely Simone who
has been doing a fantastic job as our
Crafty Angel who cares for the children –
what she does is invaluable!
The Dragon Wings costume with the
lovely and talented Sonya Jewitt turned
out to be a big one but it went very well in
the end, with team work being the order
of the day.
The results were brilliant, and the colours
were just beautiful…
This week we thoroughly enjoyed our
session making Wet-felted Snakes with
Marta Koncz.
Marta has a real knack for coming up with
some incredibly creative and beautiful
works using this technique, and how cute
are these guys….
Next week, Monday 12 th March, we
welcome yet another of our crafty mums,
Linda Sadler, who will be teaching us how
to make these amazing Autumn Leaf
Table Centre Pieces, again using a wetfelting
technique…
An important note, one last change to the
Term 1 Heart 2 Hands Schedule (we
hope!)… we have noticed that we have
quite a few unfinished bits and pieces
from the projects this term so we have
decided that the final week this term
Monday 19 th March will need to be
dedicated to Preparation for the End of
Term Market
(write on your calendars people…
Thursday 22 nd March 8.30-10.30am),
rather than making bunnies. We are so
sorry for the mix up – but don’t despair,
term 2 is bound to keep the great projects
rolling in!
Lastly, on that note, if you are interested
in contributing a project and / or being a
guest teacher in Term 2, we welcome
your input!! We never cease to be
amazed of the talents that lay hidden
within this amazing school community. If
you are interested please email Dionne at
dionnecoburn@gmail.com
That’s all from your crafty coordinators,
Mia & Dionne
P.S. A special thanks must go out to the
very thoughtful Silkwood Mum who
donated a whole bag of towels to help us
to mop up and around our wet-felting
projects! It is this sort of generosity and
thoughtfulness that makes this
community what it is… thank you!”
words of Peace
Dear friends,
I am writing to you because I am about
to launch one of our most significant and
urgent projects ever and I need your
help.
We simply must rescue the rainforest
habitat of the Sumatran Orangutan. With
only 6,624 Sumatran Orangutans left,
these gentle ‘people of the forest’ will
slip quietly to extinction unless we
rescue their rainforest today! Please
help! I need to raise $60,000 by 13 April.
These gentle ‘people of the forests’ have
lost a staggering 48% of their forests in
the last 25 years. Their numbers have
plummeted and extinction in the wild is
fast approaching.
But there is still hope! A unique and
globally significant project is underway
that is having a real impact. The project
involves the removal of 5,460 illegally
planted Oil Palms, the propagation of
60,000 seedlings and the restoration of 60
hectares of Orangutan habitat. The area
will be patrolled and monitored to protect
the restored areas and prevent further
deforestation. All of this is done by local
communities living alongside the national
park.
The project is directed by Panut
Hadisiswoyo, a 2012 finalist for the
prestigious UN Hero of the Forests Award
and founder of the Orangutan
Information Centre (OIC). He is doing
remarkable work.
Restoring each hectare of Orangutan
rainforest will cost $1000. This is
extraordinary value for rainforest
restoration. And remember, this project
doesn’t just restore rainforest – it is
important for the very survival of the
Sumatran Orangutan, Tiger, Elephant, and
Rhinoceros.
Make a difference this year. Of all
the years you have been alive on
the face of this earth, make a
difference this year. Light up that
lamp inside, because that’s the
only way there can be light on the
outside. It’s not about what you
have accomplished or what you are
going to accomplish — it's about
what is already there.
