Dear friends,
I am writing to you because I am about
to launch one of our most significant and
urgent projects ever and I need your
help.
We simply must rescue the rainforest
habitat of the Sumatran Orangutan. With
only 6,624 Sumatran Orangutans left,
these gentle ‘people of the forest’ will
slip quietly to extinction unless we
rescue their rainforest today! Please
help! I need to raise $60,000 by 13 April.
These gentle ‘people of the forests’ have
lost a staggering 48% of their forests in
the last 25 years. Their numbers have
plummeted and extinction in the wild is
fast approaching.
But there is still hope! A unique and
globally significant project is underway
that is having a real impact. The project
involves the removal of 5,460 illegally
planted Oil Palms, the propagation of
60,000 seedlings and the restoration of 60
hectares of Orangutan habitat. The area
will be patrolled and monitored to protect
the restored areas and prevent further
deforestation. All of this is done by local
communities living alongside the national
park.
The project is directed by Panut
Hadisiswoyo, a 2012 finalist for the
prestigious UN Hero of the Forests Award
and founder of the Orangutan
Information Centre (OIC). He is doing
remarkable work.
Restoring each hectare of Orangutan
rainforest will cost $1000. This is
extraordinary value for rainforest
restoration. And remember, this project
doesn’t just restore rainforest – it is
important for the very survival of the
Sumatran Orangutan, Tiger, Elephant, and
Rhinoceros.
Make a difference this year. Of all
the years you have been alive on
the face of this earth, make a
difference this year. Light up that
lamp inside, because that’s the
only way there can be light on the
outside. It’s not about what you
have accomplished or what you are
going to accomplish — it's about
what is already there.
