SOCIAL SKILLS Social skills will elaborate on the topic of relationships, social media and bullying with an explanation of Silkwood’s protocol regarding bullying. We will also be replying to our pen pals in Germany who have written to us. On Monday and Tuesday evening we had a successful workshop that involved fathers and daughters, mothers and sons. It was beautiful to see these conversations taking place. THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO We are definitely looking forward to Andi’s Maori presentation on Thurs 08/03/2012 which is both a privilege and an honour to spend time in someone else’s culture. The start of AFL on Monday will be very exciting especially for a Victorian like me! We also have Louis’s birthday on Thurs 08/03/2012 as well as Beth’s before the end of term. Natura Ed is an educational group who visit schools and teach students about the environment and they will be hosting a session in Week 8. Just some little observations throughout the fortnight: A big congratulations to Angus for a very impressive main lesson book - well done! A shout out to Fraser for the effort he is making. A thank you to Kalila for organising the music. A thank you to Georgia for organising the choreography. A ‘go Lara’ and ‘go Toby’ for ALWAYS being attentive and on the ball. To those quiet Warrior Cats - Sammie M and Ollie who are so reliable and just get on with it. Christine CLASS 7 NEWS MASTERCHEF And the masterful creations continue! We've had the most amazing food samplings over the past few weeks in Class 7 and the adult critics - Cheryl, Christine, Andrew, Mack, Treva, myself and other guests have been wowed by the quality of the cooking execution and presentation of the dishes - not to mention adhering to the school's nutrition policy as well. Jacob has made his own pasta for ravioli and Mina has made her own pizza dough as the photos show and all of the meals have been simply delicious! We're looking to create a cookbook, as these dishes are well worth sharing. CHEMICAL TESTING As part of their Environmental Ed. studies, Class 7 conducted some specific tests of our creek water to test for phosphate residues, PH levels, turbidity and dissolved oxygen. Even though we've had lots of rain, the creek seems to be in good health and we'll add the chemical profiling to the macro-invertabrate studies in our final data analysis. BODY INQUIRY PROJECTS Class 7 undertook an inquiry about a body system of interest as part of their 'Taking Care of Ourselves' Main Lesson studies. Class 7 love the opportunity to lead the class and Sophie and James did a fantastic job of educating us further about the knee and in particular, ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) as James is an expert in this area! All of the group and individual presentations were top quality - they're great public speakers and creative in their presentation modes too. TAKING CARE OF OURSELVES Class 7 had Moz and Lucy visit us as part of our Main Lesson studies on 'Taking Care of Ourselves'. Moz talked to the class about what it was like to care for a young baby and be a mother and Lucy entertained us all with her smiles, noises and gestures. The students then analysed the Pros, Cons and Questions about caring for a baby and pondered the journey from infancy to adolescence and changes in responsibilities. Kalindi CHILDREN’S HEALTH General Well-being We are concerned for each student’s total well-being. When they are not 100% well, or even too tired, it can be difficult for students to cope with the demands of an active school day. Many childhood illnesses are contagious. Please keep your children home until they are 100% well. Staff are trained in basic first aid and care for any first aid needs that may arise. It is important that your child has a nutritious protein rich breakfast before school. It is difficult for children to concentrate on their school lessons on an empty stomach. Infectious Diseases It is important for the health of the school community that children are kept away from school whilst they have a communicable disease. We ask you to immediately notify the school and to keep your children at home during the period of their infection. HEARTS TO HANDS PARENT CRAFT GROUP Hey There Crafty Folk! There have been lots of busy hands and happy voices over the last two weeks at Heart 2 Hands. Our reshuffle of the schedule didn’t dampen anyone’s enthusiasm (nor has the interchangeably steamy and wet weather for that matter!). We must start with a big thanks to everyone for all your efforts so far this term. A particular thanks must go to those who have been taking the time to help set up and pack up (it can be a big job so all help is gratefully received) along with those lovely women among us who bring along home-baked treats to share. Last, but by no means least, thank you to the lovely Simone who has been doing a fantastic job as our Crafty Angel who cares for the children – what she does is invaluable! The Dragon Wings costume with the lovely and talented Sonya Jewitt turned out to be a big one but it went very well in the end, with team work being the order of the day. The results were brilliant, and the colours were just beautiful… This week we thoroughly enjoyed our session making Wet-felted Snakes with Marta Koncz. Marta has a real knack for coming up with some incredibly creative and beautiful works using this technique, and how cute are these guys…. Next week, Monday 12 th March, we welcome yet another of our crafty mums, Linda Sadler, who will be teaching us how to make these amazing Autumn Leaf Table Centre Pieces, again using a wetfelting technique… An important note, one last change to the Term 1 Heart 2 Hands Schedule (we hope!)… we have noticed that we have quite a few unfinished bits and pieces from the projects this term so we have decided that the final week this term Monday 19 th March will need to be dedicated to Preparation for the End of Term Market (write on your calendars people… Thursday 22 nd March 8.30-10.30am), rather than making bunnies. We are so sorry for the mix up – but don’t despair, term 2 is bound to keep the great projects rolling in! Lastly, on that note, if you are interested in contributing a project and / or being a guest teacher in Term 2, we welcome your input!! We never cease to be amazed of the talents that lay hidden within this amazing school community.
