“Ultrasound-guided Nerve Blockade for
Pain Control: Seeing is Believing”
Peripheral and central nerve blockade are effective
methods to treat acute pain. These procedures have
traditionally been accomplished through blind
techniques, resulting in relatively modest success
rates. Using ultrasound technology to help guide
needle placement and confirm spread of local
anesthetic solution can drastically increase the
success of nerve blockade techniques, resulting in
lower post-operative opioid requirements, faster
rehabilitation and increased patient satisfaction.

“Current Management of Pancreatic
Cysts”
The objective of this session is to highlight the
current management of cystic lesions of the
pancreas. Pancreatic cysts are often found
incidentally on body imaging. This lecture will
highlight the indications for surgical assessment and
the general management of patients who are
managed non-operatively.

“An Update on Cardiac Diagnostics
and Device Therapy”
In Cardiology, there has been a number of advances
in noninvasive diagnostic technology over the last
decade. There has also been a surge in device
therapies, both for arrhythmia and heart failure
management. This presentation will briefly review the
growing field of device therapies and also provide an
update on new diagnostic modalities offered by the
Division of Cardiology at St. Joseph’s Health Centre.

“Disaster Assistance Response Team
(DART): Operation HESTIA”
Late in the afternoon of January 12, 2010, a
devastating earthquake struck Haiti, with the
epicentre located just outside the capital city of Portau-Prince.
The Canadian Government reacted
quickly and orders were given for the Disaster
Assistance Response Team (DART) to ready
themselves for a probable deployment. Within 24
hours of the earthquake the reconnaissance party of
the DART had arrived in Haiti and began to assess
the situation and provide assistance. This
presentation will highlight the DART’s capabilities
and will show how they were used in Haiti, with a
specific focus on the medical capabilities and
response.

Respiratory Failure and No Diagnosis”
This session will discuss a complex clinical case
which required consultation from many different
disciplines at St. Joseph’s, and look at events as
they unfolded with this patient’s illness. Staff from
Respirology, Thoracic Surgery, Infectious Disease,
Diagnostic Imaging and Pathology will discuss
differential diagnosis and treatment, explain their
reasoning and answer questions from the panel and
the audience.
