AS Economics
You will study the problem of managing
the world’s scarce resources to meet the
needs of populations. What roles are
played by consumers and by firms, and
how do they organize themselves to
solve this fundamental problem? On the
other hand, in what ways may an
economy fail to deliver effective
solutions? Faced with this, how can
governments act to improve the
workings of an economy? In the case of
the UK economy, we examine the
performance of the economy in terms of
inflation, employment and
unemployment, the balance of payments
and economic growth. Why are these
issues important and what policies can
governments use to influence
outcomes?
The National and International
Economy
A2 Economics
The concepts and theories introduced at
AS level are applied to:
The Global economy - You will study the
comparative economic performance and
policies of a range of countries,
including developing countries;
international trade; and the relationship
between ‘rich’ and ‘poor’ countries.
The Economics of work and leisure - We
investigate employment and
unemployment in the UK and Europe;
how incomes are determined, and the
distribution of income and wealth; the
impact of government and trade unions
on these issues; and the economics of
‘leisure’ industries such as travel,
broadcasting and sports.
HOW IS ECONOMICS ASSESSED?
There is no examined coursework.
Each module is examined through a written
paper.
In common with other departments, we ask
for a one-off contribution of £10 to offset the
costs of all photocopied materials and internal
study guides. Other optional costs include
attendance at an annual conference. A Swedish
exchange trip is voluntary and, in the past, has
cost approximately £270.
Application for the funding of essential materials
or recommended events may be made in
confidence to the Principal.

WHAT OTHER AS SUBJECTS COMBINE
WELL WITH ECONOMICS?
Economics is a particularly suitable
subject to combine with other AS and A
levels.
For example: for university-level
economics, mathematics at AS or A level is
highly recommended; modern languages
suit the European and overseas dimension
of economics; history and geography have
traditionally been ‘close neighbours’;
economics is a social science alongside
sociology, politics and psychology;
economics shares with the natural
sciences a respect for evidence and logical
thinking.
