Welcome
Sitting high in the Allegheny Mountains
in eastern Tucker County, Canaan Valley
is the highest valley of its size east of the
Rocky Mountains. It was designated a
National Natural Landmark, and in 1994,
the Valley became the nation’s 500th
National Wildlife Refuge.
Canaan Valley Resort State Park
with its 6,000 acres is considered
one of the “crown jewels” of the West
Virginia State Park system.
Our picturesque resort is surrounded
by 18 miles of trails -- in wetlands
and northern hardwood forests
-- as well as open meadows. Enjoy
over 200 species of birds, 600 types
of wildflowers, and a forest full of
wildlife, including deer willing to
greet you at the entrance.

RESORT
activities
The resort is filled with fun for all
ages! Individuals, families, and groups
can enjoy activities from lounging by
a pool with scenic mountain vistas to
bungying dozens of feet into the air!
Geocaching
Geocaching is an entertaining
adventure game for GPS users.
Participating in a cache hunt is a
good way to take advantage of the
wonderful features and capability
of a GPS unit. The basic idea is to
have individuals and organizations
set up caches all over the world and
share the locations of these caches
on the internet. GPS users can then
use the location coordinates to find
the caches. Once found, a cache
may provide the visitor with a wide
variety of rewards.
Climbing Wall
& Eurobungy
Attempt to climb to the top of the
25' Climbing Wall or see how high
you can jump on the Eurobungy. As
many as three climbers can scale
the wall at one time - race your
friends in timed relays to the top of
the wall.
Paintball
Meet your family or friends on the
paintball field for an afternoon of
active excitement! Individual and
family packages are available.

Outdoor Pool
The outdoor pool features beautiful scenic
mountain vistas, pool slide, and plenty of sun
and fun for all ages. Towels, locker room, and
vending machines on-site. Lifeguards are on
duty daily throughout the summer season.
Scenic Chairlift
Ride the ski lift during the summer and fall
months for a breathtaking scenic view of the
valley and surrounding Allegheny Mountains
from 4,280’. You can ride the lift back down or
hike the two miles to base camp. Either way,
it’s an unforgettable experience. Closed for the
2012 season during remodeling.
Turtle Slides
Fly down the resort hills on our speciallydesigned
“turtle slides”. Fun for all ages, race
your friends or family down the slopes in a
tube again and again! *Minimum age: 4 yrs.
Must meet 42” height requirement. Located at
the ski area. Purchase tickets at the Bear Paw
Gift Shop. Closed for the 2012 season during
remodeling.

THINGS
With a million acres of national forest
and five federal wilderness areas, West
Virginia’s Potomac Highlands are perfect
for outdoor adventurers. Our guests
enjoy easy access to regional trout
fishing, horseback riding, whitewater
rafting, scenic train excursions, cavern
tours, rock climbing and more!
The Nature Center at Canaan Valley
Resort State Park is your headquarters for
information on things to do at the park,
along with other activities in the local area.
Guided walks are offered for guests of all
ages.
Start your day by obtaining a map of the
park, along with expert advice on our trail
system. Our staff will help you plan a day
of hiking, biking, and other nature-related
activities. Enjoy a cold beverage and a
snack while you browse the Nature Center
displays, which depict common wildlife in
the area.

Blackwater Falls
State Park
The park offers many observation
points of this scenic half-mile-wide
canyon and one of the most celebrated
and photographed waterfalls in the
East.
Dolly Sods
Wilderness Area
This 10,215 acre property on the
Allegheny Plateau offers unique plants
and animals normally found farther
north in Canada and Alaska.
Otter Creek
Wilderness Area
Over 20,000 acres of wilderness with
42 miles of primitive hiking trails that
follow old railroad grades. Wonderful
for wildlife watching!
National Wildlife
Refuge
The Nation’s 500th Fish & Wildlife
Refuge offers more than 20 miles of
public-use trails for hiking, biking, and
horseback riding.
Seneca Rocks
Rising nearly 900 feet above the North
Fork River, Seneca Rocks offers rock
climbers a degree of climbing difficulty
that is unique on the East Coast.
Cavern tours
Discover adventure underground!
Extensive cave systems surround the
Potomac Region and are available to
explore year-round.

HIT THE
TRAILS
The trail system within the park
is diverse as well as interesting.
Many different features can be seen
including northern bog and heath
barren plant communities. Ask the
front desk or Nature Center for a
Trail Map before heading out.
The park offers 18 miles of marked trails, many of which
are linked with hundreds of miles of marked trails in the
1,000,000-acre Monongahela National Forest.
OFF-ROAD BIKING
Canaan Valley Resort State Park offers
11 miles of mountain bike trails ranging
in ability level from easy pathways
to more difficult single track. The
Allegheny Trail provides access to
an extensive trail system on Canaan
Mountain. Touring bikes, maps and
other useful advice on trails can be
obtained from the Nature Center.
Hiking
Hiking is a popular three-season
sport at Canaan Valley Resort State
Park. 18 miles of trails offer a diverse
experience. The Nature Center provides
maps and sells other supplies for your
adventures.
FISHING
Fishing is allowed within all areas of
the park; however, a valid West Virginia
state fishing license must first be
obtained, along with appropriate use
stamps.

TEE IT UP!
Canaan Valley Resort’s Golf Course
was named as one of the Top 10 golf
courses in West Virginia! Our course
is challenging enough for the most
experienced golfer, yet friendly for
the beginner.
Our 18-hole, par 72 golf
course is surrounded by
picturesque mountain terrain
and breathtaking West Virginia
countryside. The Geoffrey
Cornish designed course,
rated four stars by Golf Digest
Magazine, is open April through
early November and offers
meticulously groomed fairways
and lush greens that are
perfectly suited for any golfer.
With 65 sand bunkers and eight
water hazards, the Canaan
Valley course presents a
challenge to the experienced
golfer, yet remains friendly to
the novice.
The practice facility includes
a driving range, putting green,
sand bunker and chipping green.
In addition to the 18-hole course,
we offer a full-service pro-shop,
driving range, as well as cart and
club rentals. Visit the Clubhouse
Grill before or after your round
for snacks or your favorite
beverages.
Canaan Valley Resort hosts

Downhill skiers and snowboarders of all
levels love our 39 slopes, 850 ft. vertical
drop, and 180” of annual snowfall along
with outdoor beauty that only West
Virginia can offer.
Airboarding
A high-tech twist on traditional winter
sledding, airboarding is similar to riding
a bodyboard in the ocean. The airboard
is inflatable and has grooves on the
underside that allow riders to better
maneuver and travel much faster than
snow tubes. A lesson is required.
Snow Tubing
New park opening Winter 2012/13! One of
the most popular places at the resort, the
Tubing Park gives the thrill of flying down
1,200-foot-lanes while a magic carpet takes
you back to the top, eliminating an uphill
hike. Need a break? Take the chill away in
the new warming hut!
XC Skiing/Snowshoeing
The best way to experience the spectacular
beauty of our “winter wonderland” is by
cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Enjoy
30 kilometers of marked, but ungroomed,
trails and acres upon acres of wide open
meadows to roam.
Ice Skating
Our outdoor, covered ice skating rink
overlooking the valley and the mountains
offers a fabulous view while skating the
day (or night) away. The rink features an
outdoor fireplace ... the perfect spot for
