2010 DIGEST
anglers welcome
When I was a kid growing up in Goffstown, I fished for
trout on the Piscataquog River any time I could. I was kind
of fanatical about it, actually; I made my rods and tied my
own flies—especially White Hornbergs and White Millers,
which were easier to see toward sundown. My friends and I
would be out every evening fishing below the dam in town,
or upriver toward New Boston on Route 13. In those days,
opening day for all trout fishing was the fourth Saturday
in April. We couldn’t wait to get on that river every spring.
Few of us have that kind of time to spend fishing these days, but you don’t
need to dedicate all your spare time to fishing to get out and drop a line in 2010!
I still look forward to those evenings and weekends when I can get out and spend
some time on the water.
New Hampshire has more than a thou-
New format for 2010!
sand waterbodies where you can fish, from
remote trout ponds and little streams packed
with native brook trout in the mountains…
to lakes and ponds of all sizes in our beautiful
Lakes Region…to major rivers like the
Merrimack and the Connecticut, where you
can catch 10 or 12 different kinds of fish.
Given the state’s geography, you’re probably
not more than a short drive away from some
pretty amazing fishing—and the relaxation
and great scenery that go with it.
Want to take the kids out and bring home
a few sunnies for supper? Take it from me,
kids love to go fishing, and there’s no better
way for families to spend some time together
outdoors. Since children under 16
fish free, fishing in New Hampshire is also
affordable for families. If you don’t know
where or how to get started, try Fish and
Game’s website at www.FishNH.com for New
Hampshire fishing info and places to go.
Don’t forget about ice fishing. Once our lakes and ponds freeze over, a whole
other world of fishing opens up on (and under) the ice. If you’ve never tried ice fishing,
check our story on page 26. Pick a nice day without wind and you’ll be hooked.
I invite you and your family to take advantage of New Hampshire’s multitude
of fishing opportunities this year. Let us know how it goes!
the NH Freshwater Fishing
for anglers. Because of
additional advertising and
production support, this new
than the old one—leaving
more funds for us to spend
on important fisheries and
NH Fish and game — our Mission
As the guardian of the state’s fish, wildlife and marine resources, the New
• Conserve, manage and protect these resources and their habitats;
• Inform and educate the public about these resources; and
• Provide the public with opportunities to use and appreciate these resources.
• Fishing tournaments on New Hampshire waters require a
permit. Applications are taken on a first-come, first-served basis
and are available from the New Hampshire Fish and Game
Department (except for bass tournaments).
• Bass fishing tournaments: Applications are accepted beginning
October 1 for permits requested for the following year. Applications
for each bass tournament event received between October 1
and December 1 will be assigned a random computer-generated
number. Applications received after December 1 will be issued a
sequential number on a first-come, first-served basis. When there
are multiple requests for bass tournaments on the same date and
waterbody, preference will be given to the application(s) for bass
tournament(s) with the lowest assigned number(s).
• Shiners may be taken for personal use by licensed anglers with
up to six traps not over 18 inches long each, with an opening
not over one inch in diameter, or a circular drop net not over
must have the angler's name and address on it.
• Commercial harvesting of bait fish is permitted with a bait
dealer’s license and under specific rules. The license is available
from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.
• The taking of brook trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, lake
trout, trout hybrids, and salmon between two hours after
sunset and one hour before sunrise is prohibited.
• Traps, nets, fish houses, holding boxes or other receptacles
used to take, hold or to keep live bait fish in public waters must
be marked with the name and address of the owner and user.
Possession of live fish
No person shall have live fish in their possession when leaving
the freshwaters of the state, except those species allowed to be
possessed and used as live fish for bait or the person is participating
in a permitted fishing tournament. Stocking fish without the
proper permits is illegal and can result in monetary fines and loss
of fishing privileges.
Catch & Release
• Time is of the essence. Play and release the fish as quickly and
carefully as possible.
• When landing a fish, use a net with fine mesh to avoid injury.
A net is probably not necessary for small fish. Keep the fish in
the water as much as possible. A fish out of water is suffocating
and could be injured.
• When releasing a fish, handle it as little as possible when
removing the hook. When handling the fish, do not let it flop
around or squeeze it. Gently hold the fish around the middle and
upside down while removing the hook. This position calms the
fish and deters it from moving around.
• Remove the hook with small pliers or use your thumb and
forefinger to loosen and back out the hook. If a hook cannot be
easily removed, cut the leader as close as possible to the hook.
The hook will rust or fall out in a short time.
• To revive a tired fish, hold it in a swimming
position with one hand under its bottom jaw
and the other hand grasping the fish in front
of the tail. Gently move the fish back and forth
through the water until it is able to swim away.
Careful with those plastic baits!
New Hampshire fisheries biologists are reporting increasing
numbers of caught trout and salmon with indigestible soft plastic
lures in their stomachs. A discarded soft plastic lure consumed
innocently by a trout from the bottom of a freshwater lake likely
remains in that fish’s stomach for the rest of its life, and may cause
health issues such as ulcers and weight loss. Anglers are strongly
encouraged to purchase biodegradable and food-based lures rather
than soft plastic ones. It is also important that anglers not discard
plastic lures into any waters, and also to attempt to retrieve any
soft plastic lures that have become unhooked. Thanks.
New Hampshire’s Trophy Fish Program gives anglers of all ages recognition for their biggest
catches, while giving biologists important information on the fisheries over time. There are awards
for both kept and released fish in 22 freshwater species and 7 saltwater species categories.
All qualifying entrants receive a “Trophy Fish” shoulder patch for submitting their catch
information. Each year, the person catching the heaviest fish or releasing the longest fish in
a particular species category receives a certificate suitable for framing. All ages and all legal
methods of angling are represented. Your trophy may qualify for a state record; see list above.
Boating in NH
New Hampshire is a boater’s paradise!
You’re never more than a short drive away from a boatable lake,
pond or river in the Granite State. There are more than 400 public
federal and state-owned launch sites where you can get your motorboat,
kayak or canoe into the water—not to mention town-owned
ramps that you can check out.
If you’re a paddler, you’ll find hundreds of great destinations in New Hampshire—some
whitewater for the adrenaline-rush crowd, some glassy expanses for the stereotypical Sunday
driver, and lots and lots in between. Bring your binoculars, because many of the most fantastic
waterbodies are inside of state parks and NH Fish and Game-owned Wildlife Management
Areas; depending on the season and time of day, you may find more than just a nice place to
launch your people-powered craft. And, of course, don’t forget your fishing rod and tackle box!
Check www.WildNH.com for a listing of water access sites around the state, and watch
the site for a new printed NH boating and fishing public access map coming in 2010.
Register Your Boat
• Which boats? All motorboats of any size must be registered, in addition to sailboats and
sailboards 12 feet or longer. Canoes, kayaks and small sailboats do not need to register.
• New boat: The boat owner must register in person at any NH Department of Motor
Vehicles substation. Some marinas, sport shops and town halls also can provide boat
registrations; call first. The owner will be asked to show proof of ownership (such as a
bill of sale) and a photo ID.
• Renewal: Once a boat is registered, registrants will receive a renewal form in the mail
in subsequent years; boat registrations may be renewed by mail or in person.
Reciprocity
Any vessel that is registered in another state may operate on New Hampshire waters for
30 consecutive days or less without a NH boat registration. Operators must have the appropriate
Safe Boating Certificate.
Boating in NH
Ten Tips for Safe Boating
1. Don’t Overload Carry only the specified
limit for your craft and don’t sit on the
gunwales or the transom.
2. Wear Life Jackets or Vests State law
requires one wearable life preserver for
each person in a boat. Kids 12 and under
must wear a life preserver.
3. Know the Water Always carry a chart
(map) of the waters you are boating on.
4. In an Accident Your first obligation is to
save lives and help the injured. Call N.H.
Marine Patrol: (603) 293-2037.
5. Water and Alcohol Don’t Mix Sixty percent
of recent boating fatalities in N.H. are
alcohol-related. Don’t drink and boat—
the .08 law applies to boaters, too!
6. Use Your Lights All boats operating after
dark must display lights to be visible to
other boaters.
7. Use Caution When passing within 150
feet of another boat, swimmers, rafts,
shore, docks, or mooring fields, you
must be at headway speed.
8. Don’t Use the Water as a Dump It is illegal
to litter or discharge sewage into the
water.
9. Don’t Harass Wildlife All wildlife are
protected on the state’s waters, subject
to strict hunting and fishing regulations.
10. Take a Boating Safety Course For info call
Marine Patrol at (603) 293-2037.
WILDLIFE & SPORT FISH RESTORATION:
70 Years of Restoring, Managing and
Researching Fish and Wildlife
Our thanks to hunters, shooters, anglers, boaters and our industry partners! With the purchase
of firearms and ammunition, archery equipment, fishing equipment, and motorboat fuels,
hunters, anglers and manufacturers pay excise taxes that are distributed to state fish and
wildlife agencies for approved projects.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service joins state fish and wildlife agencies, private industry and
the public in a partnership to conserve fish and wildlife resources.
With help from over $100 million in federal aid funding over nearly three quarters of a century,
NH Fish and Game has been able to:
• Gain knowledge through research
• Manage fish and wildlife populations
• Acquire Wildlife Management Areas
• Improve and protect aquatic habitat
• Restore fish and wildlife populations
• Conduct Hunter and Aquatic Education programs
• Construct, upgrade and maintain more than 100
public access sites for boating and fishing.
Your purchase of hunting and fishing equipment and
motorboat fuels supports wildlife and sport fish restoration
and boating access facilities.
Diver There, Please Beware
The United Divers of N.H. urge boaters to stay well away from a red flag with a white stripe
or other flags in the water. They signal that scuba divers are in the area.
You can…
Walk on
Water!
What’s so fascinating about fishing on a
frozen pond or lake? I can’t put my finger
on the allure of ice fishing… but there’s
something irresistible about the frenzy that
follows the popping of a red tip-up flag. Just
watch a few little kids make a mad dash for
the ice-fishing hole, cheeks pink with cold
and excitement at their first catch of the day,
a tiny yellow perch!
—Mark Beauchesne
Want to get your family excited about going ice fishing? Here
are some basics to help you prepare for your first ice-angling
adventure.
EQUIPMENT
Ice-fishing equipment is specialized but simple. You
need a sled for moving equipment onto the ice—a big
plastic boat sled can haul your gear or a tired child.
A homemade sled works great, too; try a wooden box
attached to a pair of old downhill skis.
A “spud” can be used to test the thickness of the ice,
to make holes in the ice or to re-open holes made by
someone else. An auger is a giant drill for making holes in
the ice; get a hand auger for the exercise, or a power auger to make
lots of holes in a hurry. Use a “skimmer”—a long-handled slotted
spoon—to remove slush and ice from your ice-fishing holes.
The most popular ice-fishing device is the “tip-up.” The
reel, spooled with several hundred feet of braided line,
is submerged in the water; the rest of the device is
suspended on the ice by a pair of crossed “arms.” A
simple triggering mechanism makes a flag pop up
when a fish takes the bait, at which point you pull
the device from the water and reel the fish in by hand.
Your bait will usually be near the bottom, so you’ll want
a “sounder” to know how far down the bottom is. A sounder
is a heavy metal weight with a clip that attaches to your hook or
line. Lower it into the hole, and take the guesswork out of how
deep to fish. Mark your line with a button or
small sinker, and you won’t have to
re-sound after catching a fish
or changing bait.
For a more active icefishing
experience,
try a jig rod—like
a regular spinning
outfit with a
short (2 to 3-foot) rod.
Jig rods are named for the
up-and-down “jig” motion
the angler gives the bait
or lure. They allow you to
fish throughout the water
column.
BAIT
Live shiners are the bait of choice, and are sold in many locations.
You will need a bait bucket for them, and a bait dipper, which
is a small net to retrieve the little rascals from the cold water.
Mealworms and maggots are best baits for sunfish and crappies.
CLOTHING
A good pair of insulated boots, heavy wool socks and long johns
are musts. A fleece layer is next—or perhaps the traditional wool
pants and shirt. Your outer layer needs to be windproof and waterproof;
snow pants and a good winter coat will do the trick. Layering
will give you and your family better protection and comfort
in the cold. Don’t forget a warm hat and mittens.
FOOD
Snacks and drinks are very important for keeping your energy up
on the ice. Fill a thermos with beef stew or mac and cheese, and
another with hot cocoa. Bring a small grill to cook hot dogs—and
fish, when you catch them.
ET CETERA
A small tackle box carries other items you shouldn’t be without –
hooks, spare sounders, non-lead sinkers, lures, jigs, a first-aid kit,
pliers and trash bags. For safety and comfort, also bring rope (15
feet), extra clothing (leave in vehicle), a compass, fire starter and
matches, a folding lawn chair or pack chair, a heavy blanket, and
those handy little instant-heat packets. Consider ice crampons or
“creepers” for walking on ice.
Ice fishing is the main focus of the trip, but there is some
waiting involved; having activities to keep busy and
warm will only add to the fun. Frisbee, wildlife
tracking, snow-fort building and skating
are favorites. Time of day doesn’t matter,
so plan your trip around the warmest
part of the day, and keep it short
to start. You don’t have to go far
from home to have a good time
ice fishing. Let’s face it—New
Hampshire winters can seem
a little long. Having an activity
to look forward to makes
them much more fun. Enjoy
your winter on the ice!
General Rules
Ice fishing in most New Hampshire lakes and ponds begins at “ice-in” and ends at “ice-out.”
Depending on the weather and ice safety, this “season” can be from late December through
mid-April. These types of waters support mostly warmwater fish populations, including
perch, pickerel, black crappie and bass, with a few waters providing opportunities to catch
brook, rainbow or brown trout through the ice. For specific bag limits for certain species,
see Lakes & Ponds: General Rules on page 11. Waters managed for lake trout and/or
salmon have a defined season of January 1 through March 31. Remember—salmon
may not be taken through the ice. Designated trout ponds are closed to ice fishing.
On most NH waters, the general rule is 6 ice fishing devices (lines) per person when
ice fishing, with the following exceptions:
• Ice anglers are limited to 5 lines while ice fishing on NH-Maine border waters, except
Great East Lake, which has a 2-line limit.
• Only 2 ice fishing devices (lines) per angler are allowed when fishing the designated
lake trout and salmon lakes listed below (see exceptions under Cusk Fishing):
• Hooks used for bait while ice fishing must have only a single hook with a single hook
point per ice fishing device.
• Bob houses must be removed from public waters, public property or private property
no later than April 1. The owner’s name and address shall be plainly marked on the
bob house and shall have 12 square inches of reflective material half-way up on the
outside of each side.
Safety on Ice
Is the ice safe? You won’t know until you test it. Use a chisel or “spud” to thump the ice as
hard as you can; if it does not break through, continue onto the ice. Make a test hole to check
the thickness where you hit, and check the ice at intervals on your way out to your fishing spot.
Generally speaking, solid, clear ice of 5 to 6 inches is adequate for small groups; ice thickness
of 8 inches and up is good for large groups. Be aware that ice can be weakened by objects
frozen into it, because they hold the heat from the sun; avoid docks, large rocks and trees
fallen onto the ice. Also avoid areas with springs or moving water under the ice.
Ice Fishing
Cusk fishing
Freshwater cusk (burbot) may be taken
through the ice with a cusk fishing device
(see definition on page 6) marked with the
name and address of the user. In addition
to the normal number of lines allowed (see
line limits above), up to 6 cusk fishing lines
may also be used. Any species other than
cusk caught on a cusk line must be released
immediately by cutting the line without removing
the fish from the water.
The sinker of the cusk fishing device
must rest on the bottom of the waterbody.
Through the ice, cusk fishing devices will
be permitted to be set and left unattended,
except once during each 24-hour period, the
bait end of the line must be inspected. “Bobbing,”
“jigging,” or movement of the bait to
attract fish is prohibited.
The use of cusk fishing devices is restricted
to the following waters: First Connecticut
Lake (Pittsburg), Second Connecticut Lake
(Pittsburg), Third Connecticut Lake (Pittsburg),
Lake Francis (Pittsburg), Lovell Lake
(Wakefield), Merrymeeting Lake (New
Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers!
It’s up to boaters and anglers to keep nuisance species from invading N.H.’s waters!
Several species of non-native aquatic plants invade waterbodies, forming thick underwater
stands of tangled stems and vast mats of vegetation at the water’s surface. They can
crowd out important native water plants. Once they become established, aquatic nuisance
species can be impossible to contain and control—so please make sure you’re not accidentally
bringing an aquatic hitchhiker into the state!
To prevent the transport of aquatic nuisance species, please clean all recreational equipment.
Whenever you leave a body of water:
• Remove any visible mud, plants, fish or animals.
• Drain water from equipment (engine water intake systems, bilge, live wells, bait buckets).
• Clean and dry anything that comes into contact with water (boats, trailers, equipment, etc.)
• Never release plants, fish or animals into a body of water unless they came out of that
body of water. It’s the law!
Invasive Plants »
It is illegal to transport, import, purchase,
propagate, sell or distribute 14 species of
non-native aquatic plants in NH. Among
them are: Eurasian milfoil, variable milfoil,
fanwort, purple loosestrife and water
chestnut.
Keep VHS Out
Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia or VHS
virus is a fish disease that arrived in the
Great Lakes region just a few years ago.
VHS is not a threat to people who handle
or eat infected fish, but it can kill more
than 25 fish species—making it the most
significant fish disease problem in the US
in the last 50 years, with the potential to
devastate freshwater fish populations.
To date, there have been no VHS-infected
fish collected in New Hampshire, but the
virus has been found in several New York
waters, and there is a real threat that it
will reach our waters over time. There is
no vaccination or cure for the disease, so
it can’t be controlled—only contained.
You can help by not moving fish, including
bait fish, from one waterbody to another.
If you suspect VHS virus or see a fish kill,
immediately report it to NH Fish and Game
at (603) 744-5470.
« ZEBRA MUSSELS
These non-natives cause numerous problems,
including attaching themselves to boat
hulls and clogging water intake systems.
DIDYMO »
Didymosphenia geminata, a.k.a. “didymo”
or “rock snot,” has been discovered in the
Connecticut River and its tributaries. If you
fish, boat or swim in this river, be sure to
disinfect all of your items before using them
elsewhere. Visit www.des.nh.gov and search
Know the Difference!
ATTENTION ANGLERS:
Know the Difference Between Salmon and Brown Trout
Migratory and landlocked Atlantic salmon juveniles and adults can be difficult to distinguish from brown trout. There are size and bag
limit restrictions that differ for these two species; therefore, it is important to know how to identify them properly.
Young Salmon & Brown Trout
Here’s what you need to know:
Set young salmon free! Study these pictures and note the points
of difference between young salmon and brown trout. If you catch
a salmon parr or smolt, remove the hook gently and place the fish
back in the water to grow up.
Atlantic Salmon Parr
Similar markings to a brown trout.
Adult Salmon & Brown Trout
Here’s what you need to know:
The more obvious differences between adult salmon and brown
trout may be found in the head and tail areas. Knowing them
may help the angler release a fish more quickly. When in doubt
about identifying adult salmon and brown trout, play it safe and
release the fish unharmed.
Atlantic Salmon
Rivers and Streams Stocked
with Juvenile Atlantic Salmon
The following rivers and streams are stocked with juvenile Atlantic
salmon as part of cooperative state-federal agency restoration programs
in the Merrimack and Connecticut River basins. If fishing
in these waters, please be aware that regulations require that all
juvenile salmon be released.
The Atlantic Salmon
Brood Stock Fishery
In 1993, the New Hampshire Fish and Game
Department, in cooperation with the U.S.
Fish & Wildlife Service, created the Atlantic
salmon brood stock program to provide a
unique recreational fishing opportunity in
the Merrimack River. Approximately 1,500
brood stock Atlantic salmon, weighing 3 to
12 pounds each, are released annually in the
Merrimack and lower Pemigewasset rivers.
The fishery includes both a spring and a fall
stocking program.
The brood stock program is part of the Merrimack River Anadromous
Fish Restoration Program. Before they are released, these
brood fish provide eggs for the restoration program’s fry-stocking
efforts. Each year, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department,
the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the U.S. Forest Service and
conservation groups stock over one million fry in the Merrimack
River and its tributaries.
While the brood stock program has generated a lot of enthusiasm
among anglers, the recreational fishing opportunity is
secondary to the overall goal of restoring salmon, shad and river
herring to the Merrimack River.
Anglers must purchase an Atlantic salmon license ($11) in addition
to a regular NH fishing license. Each angler can keep one
salmon per day and five for the season. Only salmon marked
with a tag on the base of the dorsal fin are legal to keep. For a
map and specific rules governing the Atlantic salmon brood stock
fishery, go to: www.fishnh.com/Fishing/atlantic_salmon.htm or call
Fish Consumption Guidelines
Is it safe to eat the fish?
Fish Consumption Guidelines
Fish can be an important part of a healthy diet, but some fish
contain varying levels of pollutants like mercury. Because of this,
the NH Department of Environmental Services recommends the
following guidelines for eating freshwater fish that you catch in
New Hampshire:
• Pregnant and nursing women, and women who may become
pregnant can safely eat ONE, 8-ounce meal of freshwater fish
per month.
• Children under age 7 can safely eat ONE, 4-ounce meal of
freshwater fish per month.
• All other adults and children age 7 and older can safely eat
FOUR, 8-ounce meals of freshwater fish per month.
• When eating bass, pickerel, white perch or yellow perch, limit
consumption to fish 12 inches or less in length while following
the above guidelines.
Stocked trout contains relatively low levels of mercury. For rainbow
and brown trout, women of childbearing age and children
can safely eat ONE meal per week; others can eat SIX meals per
week. Brook trout could be either stocked or from a native population,
and therefore should be consumed at the rate of the general
freshwater advisory above.
Fish from several waterbodies in New Hampshire have been shown
to have higher than average mercury concentrations. For the waterbodies
identified below, women of childbearing age and young
children should not consume any fish; others may consume TWO
meals per month:
• Ashuelot Pond, Washington
• Comerford and Moore Reservoirs on the Connecticut River
• Crystal Lake, Gilmanton
• Dubes Pond, Hooksett
• Jackman Reservoir, Hillsboro
• Mascoma Lake, Enfield
• May Pond, Washington
• Tower Hill Pond, Candia
In addition, NO fish should be consumed from the Androscoggin
River from Berlin south to the Maine border due to potential
dioxin contamination.
Get the Lead Out
Keep Getting the Lead Out!
Loons, swans, cranes and other waterbirds
can die from lead poisoning after swallowing
lead fishing sinkers and jigs lost by anglers.
Biologists have studied the effects of lead
sinkers and jigs on waterbirds, such as loons
and swans, since the 1970s. Their ongoing
research has documented that, in the Northeast
United States and Canada where loons
breed, lead sinkers or jigs can account for
10 to 50 percent of dead adult loons found
by researchers.
Reel Fun :
Go Fish with the Kids!
Five-year-old Caysen Allard of Weare with trophy crappie catch;
Lake Massabesic, 2008.
Do you remember... lazy summer afternoons, hanging out
on the bank of a favorite pond, fishing with worms and joking around with your best
friend? Those were the days! Can your children have this same kind of laid-back experience?
Definitely. In fact, fishing is one of the best ways to spend time together as a family
and create lifelong memories. We all long for those simpler days of no commitment other
than catching a fish; you can relive those times by simply going fishing.
Fishing with kids is simple. You just need a place to go—there are thousands of fishable
lakes, ponds, and streams in New Hampshire, many of them right in the neighborhood—
and a little bit of gear. An inexpensive rod-and-reel combo is easy to find at a variety store,
or often in your own basement! Colorful, kid-friendly tackle boxes are readily available
for toting hooks, sinkers, bobbers, lures, and a pair of pliers. And there’s always the old
coffee can filled with fresh-dug worms from the garden.
Plan ahead for comfort, and let the kids help decide when and where to go and what to
bring. Dress for the weather. Bring snacks and drinks, a blanket or lawn chairs, a hat,
sunglasses, sunscreen. It’s a good idea to keep the first few trips short—say, an hour or
two—and let interest and enthusiasm grow. If the fishing is slow, you can use the time
to look for signs of wildlife.
Most adults go fishing for the camaraderie (or solitude, depending!) and the outdoors
experience; but for a lot of kids, it’s important to make a catch that first time out. You can
help by seeking out special “kids’ ponds,” or local places that are packed with panfish
like crappies and sunfish. And don’t forget the camera—you’ll definitely want to have a
picture of that first-fish smile!
Fishing is a great way to
reconnect with friends and
family. Children under age
16 don't need a license to
fish, so why not bring them
along for a day of fresh air,
sunshine and family fun?
Being outside in the fresh air and sunshine
is the first obvious bonus to learning how
to fish; most parents would agree that just
being away from the computer games and
other modern distractions is a step in the
right direction! Children relish the chance
to have quality time with adults away from
home. And of course, there’s the fishing; it’s
a lifelong skill that can provide a sense of
accomplishment along with a darn good
time. Fishing doesn’t have to be difficult
or far from home—and it’s free for kids
under 16. The important thing is to do it
as a family and have fun.
Investing in New Hampshire now, to conserve
wildlife and natural areas for future generations.
Did you know that the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department has a new nonprofit
partner? The Wildlife Heritage Foundation of New Hampshire was created to enhance,
through private financial support, the critical conservation and education programs of the
Department. The Foundation raises money and works hand-in-hand with wildlife professionals
and conservation educators to fund the conservation of wildlife and natural places that are
important to family traditions like fishing, hunting, hiking and watching wildlife.
Casting is one of many
activities offered at Discover
Wild New Hampshire Day.
Making an Impact
The positive impact of the Foundation
is already being felt. It supports Fish and
Game’s production of Wild Times for Kids, a
newsletter that brings conservation messages
about fish and wildlife into the state’s classrooms.
The Foundation also sponsors Fish
and Game’s major conservation education
event, Discover WILD New Hampshire
Day. Scheduled for April 17, 2010, at Fish
and Game headquarters in Concord, this
event brings together thousands of people
from the community. Participating conservation
groups range from Trout Unlimited to
the N.H. Lakes Association. With hands-on
activities, live animals and big fish, the day
is a fun way for families to learn about ways
to enjoy our wild state.
As the major sponsor of another Fish and Game event, the Hunting and Fishing Day
Expo & N.H. Tour, the Foundation supports this statewide fall celebration of New Hampshire’s
outdoor traditions. More than a thousand people turned out for the 2009 Expo,
which highlighted sporting organizations and hunting and fishing products. Companion
events took place around the state and at
Fish and Game’s Owl Brook Hunter Education
Center. This year’s Expo and N.H. Tour
is set for September 25, 2010, so get in on
the action!
With future donations, the Foundation
aims to support a range of projects, such as
conservation education, purchase of land
or conservation easements, conservation
communication, fish and wildlife research
projects, and supporting public access to
lands and waters.
How to Help
For its funding, the Foundation relies on gifts from individuals and businesses, as
well as grants and bequests. Donations are tax-deductible. Make checks payable to the
