through exhibitions, and interpretive and educational programs. Its education department
offers classes, workshops, field study and outreach programs. The Evans C. and Betty Drees
Johnson Children’s Art Center caters to budding artists as well.
Paintings from Jackson Walker’s “Legendary Florida” collection are on display in the Volusia
County Historic Courthouse in Downtown DeLand. These larger-than-life oil paintings on
masonite have been called “a compilation of images that weave a visual tapestry of Florida’s
long and eventful past.”
Stetson University’s Duncan Gallery of Art and Homer and Dolly Hand Art Center provide
professional venues for Stetson students to show their work during the annual juried Student
Art Competition and the Senior Thesis Exhibitions, and for established artists from around
the world.
The African American Museum of the Arts, on Clara Avenue in DeLand, houses the area’s
only collection of African-American and Caribbean-American cultural art. It displays a permanent
collection of masks and sculptures, plus a revolving gallery of works from established and
up-and-coming artists.
The Florida Museum for Women Artists is the only museum in the state of Florida and the
southeast United States that provides art and other artistic disciplines exclusively by women
artists. The 7,000-square-foot museum exhibits contemporary art, collections, and traveling
exhibits, and has three galleries, a museum shop, cafe, meeting and lecture room.
In Deltona, the Deltona Arts & Historical Center features an art gallery and recording studio,
and has a full schedule of after-school programs, performances, art classes, music lessons and
exhibits. The center also houses Deltona’s historical library.
Performing arts have their time in the spotlight thanks to several local theaters in West
Volusia. Lake Helen’s Shoestring Theatre specializes in family-friendly productions — musicals,
comedies and dramas — that are produced and acted in by locals. Shoestring’s season runs from
September through May, with summer programs filling June. Stetson University students take the
stage at Stover Theatre, where one-man shows and full-stage productions are commonplace.
And the Sands Theater Center and Athens Theatre in Downtown DeLand host live musical
and dramatic productions, and screenings of classic movies and independent art films; plus
lectures and educational activities for students and adults.
For some, taking to the water by craft or to fish is the ultimate escape. Perhaps the ultimate
escape itself, West Volusia is teeming with marinas and fish camps, plus fishing holes, lakes and
the north-running St. Johns River and its narrow canoe trails and generous open waters.
Canoeists and kayakers are often found exploring the blueways (paddling trails) of West Volusia,
including Alexander Springs State Canoe Trail, which runs along the St. Johns River alongside the
southwest corner of Lake George State Forest, east of Lake Dexter. The Gemini Springs Blueway,
also appropriate for small crafts, runs the south/southeast corner of Gemini Springs Park northeast,
Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp
From famous-name homes to historical centers that collect artifacts from bygone eras, we
remember the storied history of West Volusia better thanks to several local museums and
historical camps.
History buffs can enjoy sifting through treasures housed in the Conrad Historical Research
Center, and visitors can see some of the most comprehensive collections of county archives
at the DeLand House Museum. The house was built in 1886 for DeLand’s first attorney, and
includes a gift shop, museum and extensive collection of period photographs.
Another famous home in West Volusia is the Stetson Mansion, which once was the winter
home of hat manufacturer John B. Stetson. The home, refurbished to its original glory just a
few short years ago, is 9,000 square feet and has an adjacent 800-square-foot schoolhouse,
which has been converted into a guesthouse. Tours of the Stetson Mansion are available by
appointment.
Not to be outdone is DeBary Hall Historic Site, which includes the circa 1800s winter
mansion and hunting estate of European-born wine merchant Frederick Debary. DeBary Hall’s
Visitor’s Center is an essential stop before you tour the mansion, where a large-screen movie
tells the story of the famous St. Johns River and DeBary’s role in its development.
West Volusia also has some communities within its cities that tell the story of the lifestyles
of early settlers, and many continue traditions today. Deemed the oldest active religious
community of its kind in the Southeast, the Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp was founded in 1894
and remains an active community. More than 100 mediums live in the 55-acre camp, where
visitors descend year-round for readings, healings and séances.
Another property worth visiting is the Pioneer Settlement for the Creative Arts — the hallmark
of Barberville. Pioneer Settlement offers classes, art and crafts, tours and educational programs,
and festivals, and has a museum, historical buildings, exhibits and more.
Unique museums and historical centers tell stories of West Volusia and its people. Learn
about the role West Volusia played in World War II at the DeLand Naval Air Station Museum,
which is chock-full of military artifacts and items that tell the tales of U.S. naval history.
Memorial Park in DeBary also salutes our veterans, and serves as a peaceful place to honor
them. At the 2.5-acre park, an F-15 Eagle aircraft and USS Langley’s anchor are on permanent
display. Nearby picnic pavilions welcome rest and reflection. An authentic U.S. Army AH-1
Cobra Helicopter is on display at Veterans’ Memorial Park, 1921 Evard Ave. in Deltona. The
park also features a large picnic pavilion and restrooms, and is ADA-accessible.
Other one-of-a-kind history museums include the DeLand Memorial Hospital Museum,
whose exhibits include a 1,000-piece elephant-collectibles display, antique toy collection, and
1920s operating room, and the U.S. Postal Service Museum in Orange City, which displays
rare artifacts, including clothing, paperwork and books.
As you’ve already seen in the pages in this guide, there’s no shortage of recreational opportunities
in West Volusia. But keep on cheering: Sports teams and their devoted fans have a place here, too.
Stetson University athletics bring home games to DeLand in every season. Hatter sports include
men’s baseball, basketball, soccer, golf, and women’s softball, basketball, golf, tennis and soccer,
among many, many others. And, beginning in 2013, Stetson and the community will welcome the
return of Stetson football after a 57-year absence.
Some of the most popular games among locals are men’s baseball and basketball matchups,
played at Melching Field and the J. Ollie Edmunds Center, respectively. The Stetson men’s basketball
team has called the J. Ollie Edmunds Center home since 1974. The Hatters have had just one losing
season at home and have won 67 percent of their games there, posting a 314-154 all-time record.
One of the most picturesque, fan-friendly stadiums in the nation, Melching Field at Conrad Park is in
its 11th season as the home of Hatters baseball, and the team has a .701 winning percentage on its
home turf. For a complete schedule of Stetson athletics, visit www.gohatters.com.
The DeLand Suns, a Florida Collegiate Summer League Florida League team, is one of six teams
in this the Central Florida league. The league provides opportunities for college players to compete
against top-level players in an effort to prepare them for a career in professional baseball. The annual
season runs June through July, and games are played at Melching Field at Conrad Park. Learn more
about the DeLand Suns online at www.floridaleague.com.
Of course, there’s no shortage of amateur athletic programs in West Volusia, and several of the
area’s cities also organize youth sports programs for everything from basketball to volleyball. County
and city parks, ball fields and courts enjoy nearly year-round activity from youngsters and their
families who cheer them.
“Founded in 1872 by developer George Norris, Glenwood was
originally called Spring Garden. A large sawmill owned by the Bond
Lumber Company employed most of the town’s residents. The area
is now primarily residential. Grand Avenue, running through the
heart of the community, evokes the feeling of being transported
back in time with canopies of moss-draped live oaks.”
Focus on the family
with affordable fun
Kids get their speed on at the Family
Fun Town in Orange City.
PHOTO COURTESY OF FAMILY FUN TOWN
Finding affordable and fun family outings is about as easy as spotting a manatee at Blue Spring State
Park in December. That’s to say, they’re everywhere!
Bowl over boredom by checking out one of the area’s bowling centers, including AMF Deltona Lanes
and 32-lane Sunshine Bowling Center in DeLand, where you can strike the pins during the day, or wait
until dark for the illuminated alleys, balls and walls and pulsating music. Complete with snack bars and
game rooms, local bowling facilities also post coupons online from time to time, making this affordable
family outing even more so.
Do you prefer a rink to an alley? Strap on some roller skates or blades, and whisk through Earl Brown
Park, along DeLand’s new Alabama Greenway or along the 12-foot-wide Spring-to-Spring Trail. Or, check
Beacon YGTWV 2011
out DeLand’s indoor Speedway Skating Center, where parents often are admitted free.
Skateboarders also have their place at DeLand Skate Park and at Youth Advisory Board Skate Park
in Deltona. DeLand Skate Park is a 12,000-square-foot park adjacent to Earl Brown Park and is open to
skateboarders, skaters and bicyclists. Deltona’s skate park is part of the Lake Butler Recreation Complex
and one of the city’s 17 parks and recreational facilities.
Though the birthplace of speed is about 20 miles east, West Volusia and its neighbor New Smyrna Beach
also rev their engines with racing at New Smyrna Speedway (just east of DeLand) and Volusia Speedway
Park in DeLeon Springs. New Smyrna Speedway is a local home to FASCAR asphalt racing and sells tickets
to its weekly events. Volusia Speedway Park, a clay track that sees DIRTcar, spring and late-model go-kart
racing, hosts races from March through December.
In Orange City, set a date for the family at Family Fun Town — West Volusia’s only attraction that
combines 18-hole miniature golf, go-carting, batting cages and an inside arcade. When the day turns dark,
lights illuminate the facility, allowing the fun to last even longer.
Another one-of-a-kind attraction in West Volusia is the Reptile Discovery Center. The facility, located
off U.S. 92 a little ways east of DeLand, displays lizards, turtles, tortoises, and some of the world’s most
exotic snakes. In fact, the facility comprises four parts — a museum, educational center, zoo and pet farm
— and is one of America’s few reptile facilities that collect venom for medical use and research.
Do you prefer geology over biology? Visit Stetson University’s Gillespie Museum of Minerals. It houses one
of the largest gem and mineral collections in the Southeast, and is the perfect place to see rare specimens,
geology exhibits and native ecosystems. Gillespie Museum’s geologic collection of fine minerals, rocks,
and fossils is displayed throughout the building and is interspersed with hands-on, interactive displays.
More interested in skydiving than spelunking? Visit one of the busiest drop zones in the world at Skydive
DeLand at the city’s municipal airport. With tandem jumps or in accelerated free fall, you too can fly from
above, or keep your feet firmly planted on the ground while watching the action from the observation deck
or Skydive DeLand’s Perfect Spot Restaurant and Bar. Experienced skydivers fly every day, back to back,
as weather permits. The skydiving training capital of the world is indeed a sight to behold.
Cypress Point Golf and RV Club in Osteen is a casual, nine-hole course that features
permanent and seasonal camping lots. Golfers say this club, which opened in 1973, is
one of the best local courses for the money.
A U.S. Open qualifying site, DeBary Golf & Country Club was rated four stars by
Golf Digest Places to Play in 2004 and 2008. The challenging design has a Carolina
feel, and managers at DeBary Golf & Country Club say the greens roll “true and fast.”
Also in DeBary is Glen Abbey Golf Course, a regulation-length course known for its
challenging play.
Volusia County’s most populous city also has one of the 50 best new golf courses,
according to GolfWeek Magazine. The Deltona Club, an 18-hole course, was fully
renovated in 2007.
Three courses roll through DeLand, including Southridge Public Golf Course, a family
owned and -operated, 18-hole course in DeLand, well-suited for walkers. Nearby Victoria
Hills Golf Club is another 18-hole course, and is scattered with Augusta pines and oak
hammocks. Among Victoria Hills’ accolades is its four-and-a-half star rating.
Down the road from Victoria Hills is the 18-hole DeLand Country Club, which has
daily fee play in addition to its popular membership programs. Rolling hills and borders
of oak and pine trees make this course a favorite of many golf enthusiasts.
In addition to many award-winning casual and regulation-length courses, many golf
clubs in the area also boast chipping greens, driving ranges, pro shops and on-site
restaurants and facilities for special events, proving West Volusia has a good grip on
this popular sport.
When it comes to relaxation, some seek the serene outdoors, some hunt for homebound
happiness, and yet others say, “Where’s the spa?” We’re happy to say there’s one probably
only a few miles away, no matter where you are in West Volusia.
In addition to the seemingly endless variety of hair and nail salons, West Volusia spas and
wellness centers offer as much as high-end resort hotels in Orlando. Relax your muscles,
detoxify skin, and sweep away every stress-induced pollutant that keeps your temple from
operating at its finest.
The marriage of holistic, alternative medical treatments, such as acupuncture and chiropractic
techniques, is available at many spas here as well. From deep-tissue to hot-stone massage,
and from body-contouring treatments to “sunlight saunas,” spa and wellness centers in West
Volusia offer services to relax you.
If you need to show more love to the skin you’re in, why not treat yourself to a facial?
Another luxurious treatment is a body wrap, which can be formulated to exfoliate, energize,
hydrate or relax you. And wellness centers in the community offer everything from yoga to
health food, and from meditation to aromatherapy.
Barkley Square Dog
Park in DeLand
Between dog parks and equestrian trails, animal lovers have a place in the great outdoors of
West Volusia.
Dog parks allow pooches to run free in Deltona, DeLand and DeBary, thanks to the City of
Deltona’s Keysville Dog Park, and Volusia County’s Barkley Square and Gemini Springs dog
parks. Barkley Square has a lined pond for swimming canines to enjoy in the large-dog area, and
is composed of 14 acres of large, shady trees, benches, dog-watering stations and restrooms. A
dog-washing station also is available for a fee. (Of course, dogs are permitted in all county parks,
but must be leashed unless in a dog-park area.)
Similarly, Keysville Dog Park in Deltona has small- and large-dog areas, watering stations,
pavilions and picnic tables, plus a playground, half-mile walking trail and basketball court.
A portion of Gemini Springs Park in DeBary has been set aside for furry friends. Unleashed
dogs and their owners can enjoy the 4.5-acre shady space, which also includes dog-wash
stations, water fountains for dogs, benches and picnic tables, and separate areas for large and
small dogs.
Is your pet a horse? Of course, of course! West Volusia is beloved by horse lovers, too. In Lake
Helen, you’ll find an environmental education center, nature trail and multipurpose trail for riders
at the Lake Helen Equestrian Park and Environmental Park, while the Horse Creek Equestrian
Center accesses the trails of Lake George Forest in Astor.
Take in some training at the largest Standard-bred horse training facility in North America at
the world-famous Spring Garden Ranch Training Center in DeLeon Springs. Qualifying races are
November through April at the center.
Equestrian trails are generously distributed throughout West Volusia preserves and forests,
too, including at Wiregrass Prairie Preserve and Hickory Bluff Preserve in Osteen, Tiger Bay State
Forest Longleaf Pine Preserve in DeLand, and more. And, riders are often seen trotting alongside
the Spring-to-Spring Trail, which currently runs 15 miles throughout West Volusia (see our “trails”
story for more details).
Deep Creek Stables, a horse ranch, provides horse boarding, horseback riding, lessons, hayrides
and camping opportunities in a family-friendly environment. Be a cowboy for a day, relax in rustic
spaces overnight, or try a horse-and-buggy ride at sunset at this Pierson facility.
Swim and splash
at area parks, pools
In early March, sunbathers
would rather soak up rays than
swim in DeLeon Springs’
72-degree water, but in summer,
the spring gets all the action.
The envy of every snowbound Northerner, Floridians are blessed with moderate weather
that allows most anyone who wants it, the opportunity to swim, snorkel, surf or water-ski
year-round. The majority of us, however, probably are content to strip down and suit up only
April through October, and West Volusia has a variety of places to go for a dip.
In addition to the thousands of swimming pools homeowners enjoy at their beck and call
are public swimming holes open eight months of the year or more. Blue Spring State Park
reopened its 72-degree spring March 1 (it’s open until Nov. 15 each year) and is ready to
receive the 2011 crop of swimmers, snorkelers and scuba divers.
Like Blue Spring, DeLeon Springs State Park has a spring-fed swimming area. DeLeon Springs’
swimming hole has depths that range from 18 inches at the shore to 30 feet at the spring boil,
and the park has lifeguards on post April through September. A constant 72 degrees, the
swimming area is open year-round from 8 a.m. until one half-hour before sunset.
The Splash Pad at Wes Crile Park in Deltona, open May through October, brings wet and
wild fun to children of all ages. The park features a variety of water features — geysers, water
cannons, animal- and plant-shaped sprayers — in a fenced, secure environment. The nearby
playgrounds and picnic facilities can make a day out of play.
Want a community pool experience, complete with slides, diving boards and lifeguards?
Your best bet is with your local YMCA, which has facilities in DeLand and Deltona. DeLand
Family YMCA touts a 25-yard-by-25-meter outdoor pool, a year-round indoor heated pool, and
group swimming programs for youths and adults. If you’re a member of the Y, pool admission
is free, and community participants pay a nominal fee for pool use.
“The community of Enterprise was founded in 1841 on the shores of Lake Monroe
as a steamboat port and served as the first Volusia County seat. The area was
also the site of the historic Brock Hotel, a popular destination for early visitors
from the North who sought the ‘healing waters’ of Green Springs. Today the
community is a designated National Register Historic District with active
involvement by members of the Enterprise Preservation Society. A leisurely drive
along Lakeshore Drive offers breathtaking scenic vistas of Lake Monroe.
Barberville was established in 1763 as a trading post on the west side
of the St. Johns River. The community is home to the Pioneer Settlement
for the Creative Arts, a living history museum, Volusia Speedway Park and
Barberville Produce novelty market, offering a cornucopia of unusual items.
Visitors to Cassadaga, 25 miles southwest of Daytona Beach, are immediately
struck by the calm and tranquility that permeate this community of practicing
Spiritualists. Designated a Historic District on the National Register of Historic
Places in 1991, the Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp is the oldest active religious
community in the Southeastern United States.”
Lake Beresford Park,
DeLand
West Volusia is blessed with some of the best parks in the county. From fishing piers to playgrounds,
and from pavilions to trails, their amenities are second-to-none.
To start, West Volusia has six state parks, and two that have the fullest menus of amenities are
Blue Spring State Park and DeLeon Springs State Park. Both have their own spring-fed swimming
areas and are adjacent to the 300-mile St. Johns River. The parks offer canoe rentals, walking trails,
picnic tables and pavilions, and much more. Kids can burn energy on the elaborate playgrounds,
both largely shaded, and can refill their fuel tanks with Blue Spring’s snack bar or DeLeon Springs’
Old Spanish Sugar Mill Restaurant.
Another unique state park in DeLand is Hontoon Island. As its name says, this park is only
accessible via boat or the pontoon ferry that takes visitors from a parking area to the shoreline. Some
state parks also house visitors’ centers within them, which share the storied histories of these unique
places. Hontoon Island State Park’s visitors’ center exhibits share information about the many different
inhabitants of the island since it was first discovered by Native Americans. Similarly, the Visitor Center
at DeLeon Springs State Park features exhibits on the park’s 6,000-year history; video presentations
about Florida’s springs, the St. Johns River and the Everglades; and a children’s area.
The cities of West Volusia have their own municipal parks as well and are chock-full of amenities
of their own. The City of DeBary offers 10 different parks, with amenities ranging from simple picnic
areas and playgrounds to natural springs and biking trails. Deltona has 17 parks and an art center,
along with recreational complexes and active senior centers.
“Volusia, near Astor, was one of the region’s first
settlements established on the St. Johns River. Today it is a
popular fishing community, home of several marinas and
fishing resorts nestled along the St. Johns River.”
Deltona also is home to Lyonia Preserve, which comprises nearly 400 acres of scrub habitat,
amphitheater and environmental center. The county-run Lyonia Environmental Learning Center,
adjacent to the Deltona Regional Library, has a mission to preserve and educate visitors about the
endangered Florida scrub jay.
DeLand has four municipal parks, with Freedom Playground off Stone Street touting the largest
playground structure of the bunch. The city also has several walks and trails, including the DeLand
Historic Mural Walk – a pictorial directory to West Volusia’s past – and the DeLand Sculpture Walk,
which takes followers through DeLand and showcases 12 fixed sculptures.
Gemini Springs Park, DeBary, is a flagship park in West Volusia, and is part of an impressively
full county-park family. You can see a detailed county-park listing online at www.volusia.org/parks.
Each listing denotes the park’s amenities and accommodations, as well as operating hours and
addresses.
One of Volusia County’s pride-and-joy projects over the past several years has been the Springto-Spring
Trail. When complete, it will stretch 26 miles from Gemini Springs State Park to DeLeon
Springs State Park. Several segments already have been completed, totaling 15 miles that encompass
five trailheads at DeBary Hall Historic Site, Gemini Springs Park, Lake Monroe Park, Lake Beresford
Park, Blue Spring State Park and along Grand Avenue in Glenwood. The spring-to-spring has been
designed to accommodate walkers, joggers, in-line skaters, bicyclists and people with disabilities. Learn
more about the trail and its future segments online at www.volusia.org/trails/springtospring.htm.
Did you know West Volusia has the second-largest population of nesting eagles in the United
States, and the second-largest pre-migration stop for swallow-tail kites? Taking to the river to spot
these amazing creatures is ideal from kayaks, canoes, houseboats and river cruises. The Great
Florida Birding Trail also runs through the county, and in full, is a collection of 489 sites that offer
bird-watching activities and educational opportunities. Learn more about the Great Florida Birding
Trail at http://floridabirdingtrail.com.
Other recommended sites to see winged wonders are Blue Spring State Park, DeLeon Springs
State Park, Hickory Bluff County Park, Hontoon Island State Park, Lake Beresford Park, Lake George
State Forest, Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge, Tiger Bay State Forest, and Wiregrass Prairie
Preserve.
Perhaps you’d like to explore West Volusia from the road with your car stereo radio humming or
bike tires rolling. If so, don’t miss traveling through our scenic communities along the River of Lakes
Heritage Corridor Scenic Highway. The Florida Scenic Highway designation is branded on 120 miles
of road in West Volusia, following the U.S. 17/17-92 north-south corridor, plus several byways and
back roads, and connects to the historic St. Johns River.
