Dear Friend of Secrets Unsealed: 

In your hands you have our latest Secrets 

Unsealed Newsletter. As you browse through 

it I would like to mention several things that 

might be of interest to you. 

First, I would like to draw your attention to 

the second part of my article on the Manhattan 

Declaration (if you missed part # 1 you 

can download it from our Secrets Unsealed 

website). This article deals with some very 

important current events relating to church and state. I trust that 

it will be a blessing to you. 

Second, our annual Secrets Unsealed Summit which took 

place near Yosemite National Park on the last weekend of October 

was a powerful blessing to those in attendance. Those 

who attended unanimously expressed that it was a rich spiritual 

blessing. We enjoyed fellowship, prayer and intense Bible study 

in the midst of the spectacular natural beauty of Yosemite. Our 

speakers were Dr. Samuel Koranteng-Pipim, a firm defender of 

the faith once delivered to the saints, Dr. Milton Teske, a gifted 

teacher and health educator, and yours truly. For 2011 we are 

hoping for an alternate location. Don’t miss out on this opportunity 

to charge your spiritual (and physical) batteries! 

Finally, I wish to thank those who have supported Secrets Unsealed 

with their prayers and donations. God has used you to 

keep the ministry growing. We praise the Lord that we are able 

to participate in the mission of finishing God’s work on earth so

Miracle-Gro for the Brain

Throughout all eternity we will 

be ever learning more and more 

and yet the human brain will still 

be capable of more. While our 

brains today are probably quite 

degenerated compared with those 

of the antediluvians 

yet we must 

recognize that 

the fundamental 

design of the human 

brain is to 

be ever learning. 

Yet today it seems 

that starting after 

childhood 

learning seems 

to be more difficult. 

Academic 

achievement in 

school comes at 

the cost of significant 

effort for some. And as 

we advance through life learning 

seems to become more and more 

difficult. “You can’t teach an old 

dog new tricks.” And then the decline 

and forgetfulness of old age 

seems to come too soon and some 

even progress into serious degrees 

of dementia. 

Today scientists are beginning to 

unlock some of the secrets of how 

the brain learns and what it takes 

to create new memories and to 

make them permanently accessible 

to the conscious mind. There are 

over 100 billion neurons in your 

brain and each of these has thousands 

of little roots and branches 

reaching out and connecting with 

each other. Everywhere they touch 

they form a synapse where they release 

one of several 

hundred different 

neurotransmitters 

that activate or regulate 

whether the 

neuron they touch 

will fire or not. The 

electrical activity 

of this vast network 

constitutes our conscious 

thoughts and 

in the various connections 

will be 

found our memories. 

It is extremely 

complex and even 

a simple memory is not stored in 

a single location. An apple is not 

just an “apple”. The shape of the 

apple will be stored in one place, 

the color in another, the sound of 

biting into a crisp apple in another, 

and the sweet distinctive taste in 

yet another place. And the word 

“apple’ will be in yet another language 

association area and manzana 

in yet another and so on with 

every aspect of an apple and all 

the different varieties of apples 

you have known and every other 

sight, sound, taste, smell or feel

you have ever associated with an 

apple. This infinitely complex network 

of associations is then cross 

referenced with any other thoughts 

you may have had that referenced 

an apple in any way. When you 

figure that each of your 100 billion 

neurons can form up to 50,000 

synapses with other neurons and 

you start to do the math of the possible 

synaptic paths that could be 

taken the exponential number that 

results starts to exceed the number 

of atoms of mater in the known 

universe! 

But this complex array of different 

aspects of an apple stored 

in the synapses across the different 

parts of your brain needs to be 

coordinated so that they all come 

together in a meaningful conscious 

experience that you can recall 

as needed. The hippocampus 

is the switchboard in the center of 

the brain that is 

responsible for 

coordinating 

these. And we 

now know that 

the hippocampus 

is the key part 

of the brain that is responsible for 

learning – that is making the various 

sights and sounds and other 

sensory input permanent connections 

that can be recalled in the future. 

This learning process requires 

several things. First it requires 

your conscious focused attention. 

This is an action of the frontal lobe. 

“Therefore, whether you eat 

or drink, or whatever you do, 

do all to the glory of God.” 

1 Cor. 10:31 NKJV 

Your power of decision chooses to 

hold a particular thought in your 

conscious mind and dwell on it. 

Maybe you are trying to learn a 

new Spanish vocabulary word. 

You hear it pronounced, you see it 

on the page, you think about what 

it means and you associate it with 

other thoughts and pictures in your 

mind, you say it, you write it, you 

try to use it in a sentence or maybe 

several different sentences, etc. 

etc. And as you repeat this process 

over and over at different times 

new synaptic connections are being 

formed. As these connections 

grow larger and stronger and there 

are more of them connecting to 

other aspects of the word you are 

learning it will become easier to 

recall and use it when you want to. 

This process of growing new 

and stronger synapses we now understand 

involves several protein 

factors whose 

job is to build 

and maintain all 

these new synapses. 

The most 

prominent one 

of these is called 

brain-derived neurotrophic factor 

or BDNF. This is the fertilizer that 

allows neurons to grow new synapses. 

High levels of BDNF and 

those new associations you are 

trying to form as you memorize 

that new Spanish word easily and 

quickly grow into new strong synapses. 

In experimental animals

if the BDNF is missing they seem 

unable to learn new activities. 

But BDNF goes way beyond 

growing new synapses where we 

need them. We now know that 

BDNF actually causes stems cells 

in the brain to grown whole new 

neurons in the hippocampus. We 

used to think 

that after 

childhood you 

did not grow 

any new neurons 

– but now 

we know that 

is not true. It 

seems that 

these new neurons 

in the hippocampus are a key 

part of learning new things. It is 

BDNF that is responsible for these 

new neurons. This BDNF is truly 

the Miracle-Gro fertilizer of the brain. 

Unfortunately in most people 

BDNF levels drop significantly after 

childhood and throughout life. 

So how can we get more BDNF 

in the brain? Physical Exercise! 

When experimental animals are 

exercised BDNF levels rise and 

they can more quickly learn new 

tasks. The same is true in humans. 

About a half hour of vigorous exercise 

(80% - 90% of max heart 

rate) and BDNF levels will be up 

in the excellent range and the ability 

to learn will be significantly increased 

for several hours. 

Let me tell you about an exciting 

example of a school district 

that actually put this principle into 

practice. Naperville District 203 

in Illinois (19,000 students). Instead 

of sports where many just 

sit around and only the more athletic 

can excel. The focus is on 

daily aerobic exercise with a goal 

towards lifetime fitness. There is 

running, bicycles, 

exercise 

e q u i p m e n t , 

swimming, 

rock climbing, 

kayaking. 

Every student 

is wearing 

a heart 

rate monitor 

and computerized fitness records 

are kept. Injuries are way down 

because the students are cooperating 

instead of competing. The 

national average in our schools is 

that about 30% of the students are 

overweight but at Naperville only 

3% are. And they found that academic 

achievement also went way 

up. For students needing help in 

certain classes they scheduled 

an extra hour of exercise before 

school with excellent results. 

In the international math and 

science test (TIMSS) that students 

around the world take, the Asian 

countries place far ahead of the 

US. But there is one notable exception: 

Naperville placed number 

one – ahead of every other 

school in the world! If you want to

The Robe 

A new weekend series centered 

on Christ’s robe of righteousness 

and the Hebrew sanctuary was 

aired live from 3ABN’s Worship 

Center, October 21–23, 2010. 

“October marks the 166th anniversary 

of the Great Disappointment 

and the beginning of 

the investigative judgment,” says 

Stephen Bohr, senior pastor of the 

Fresno Central Seventh-day Adventist 

Church and director of the 

Secrets Unsealed ministry. 

“There is no doctrine of the Seventh-day 

Adventist Church that 

has been attacked with such vitriolic 

hatred as this one,” he continues. 

“Those who fight against it 

often claim that it takes away our 

assurance of salvation, but does it? 

In this series we will show that instead 

of taking away our assurance, 

it guarantees it all the more!” 

Each presentation focuses on the 

robe of Christ’s righteousness and 

is designed to take viewers step by 

step with Jesus through the Hebrew 

sanctuary. 

“We will find that each of its 

four sections teaches a particular 

function Jesus has in the great 

plan of salvation,” Pastor Bohr explains. 

“We’ll find that the sanctuary 

camp is where Jesus lived His 

perfect life for every human being 

who has ever lived. As we follow 

Him into the court we will discern 

His vicarious death for all. Following 

Him still further into the ‘holy 

place’ we’ll comprehend His intercessory 

ministry where He applies 

the benefits of His atonement to individual 

repentant sinners. “Then, 

and most importantly, we’ll follow 

Him into the ‘most holy place’ 

where we will study the meaning 

of the cleansing of the heavenly 

Sanctuary and show the link between 

the three angels’ messages 

of Revelation 14 and the ‘most holy 

place.’”

Reflections on the Manhattan Declaration, Part 2 

by Stephen Bohr 

The religious leaders who signed 

the Declaration are to be commended 

for their desire to uphold 

high moral standards in society. 

I believe that their intentions are 

sincere. In many ways the document 

has laudable aspirations. For 

example, it calls “upon believers 

and unbelievers to defend the sanctity 

of human life, the dignity of 

marriage and the rights 

of conscience and religious 

liberty.” The 

document affirms that 

these truths are “inviolable 

and non-negotiable.” 

What genuine 

Christian could argue 

with such a statement? 

Most Seventh-day Adventists 

would heartily 

agree that the life 

of the unborn and the old and the 

sick should be zealously protected 

by the state. They would agree that 

marriage should be between a man 

and a woman and that religious 

liberty should be protected. Yet, 

the critical question that needs to 

be answered it this: How can these 

worthy objectives be reached? Is 

it by appealing to the arm of civil 

power or does true and lasting success 

lie elsewhere? 

How is a moral society created 

and perpetuated? A moral society 

can only exist when it is composed 

of truly moral persons. And what 

lies at the very core of truly moral 

persons? The answer is that in the 

new birth God gives people a new 

heart and then writes His moral 

law upon it (Ezekiel 36:26, 27; 

Jeremiah 31:31-34). As a result it 

will be a delight for the converted 

child of God to obey the moral law 

(Psalm 40:7, 8). In fact, 

the Christian will cry 

out with David: “How I 

love your law”. It is impossible 

for a Christian 

to speak about morality 

without reference 

to the Ten Commandments 

because they are 

at the very foundation 

of a truly moral society! 

Yet many religious leaders in the 

United States have taught that the 

law of God was nailed to the cross, 

that it is impossible for Christians 

to keep it this side of heaven, that 

Jesus kept if for us, (which is true 

in justification!) that we are not 

under law but under grace, that we 

are not under the letter but under 

the Spirit (true if understood correctly) 

and that observing the law 

is legalism and has nothing to do 

with our salvation. How can we expect 

a moral society when church 


members are taught on a regular 

basis in church that keeping God’s 

law is not required by God at worst 

and is optional at best? 

In recent years there has been a 

growing desire on the part of some 

religious leaders in the United 

States to have the civil power forsake 

its neutrality toward religion. 

Many of them have blamed the 

Federal and State governments for 

the disgraceful decline of morals 

in the United States. They have 

hinted that if the government displayed 

the Ten Commandments 

in our courts, gave vouchers for 

church charitable work, allowed 

Christian displays on government 

property, passed constitutional 

amendments against abortion and 

in favor of heterosexual marriage, 

inserted prayer in public schools, 

kept “In God we Trust” on our 

currency and “one nation under 

God” in the Pledge of Allegiance, 

the morals of the nation would improve. 

In other words the ills of society 

are blamed on the legislative 

failures of the state and therefore 

the church looks to the state to correct 

them. 

There certainly is an incongruity 

between preaching that the Ten 

Commandments were nailed to the 

cross or that keeping them is legalism 

and then turning right around 

and preaching that they should be 

posted in our courts of justice and 

upheld and enforced by the civil 

government. 

I believe that the deplorable morals 

of society reflect much more 

the failure of the church in modern 

society rather than the failure of 

the state. The church is the leaven 

of society, the salt of the earth, the 

light of the world and the church 

has failed to be leaven, salt and 

light. People who go to church 

today hear very little about obedience, 

holiness and victory over sin. 

Very little is said about the need 

for repentance, confession, conversion, 

the new birth and a life of 

obedience that flows from a heart 

of love. The message in churches 

today (including some Adventist 

churches, sad to say!) seems to major 

on signs and wonders, political 

involvement, psychological selfhelp, 

material prosperity and feeling 

good about oneself. And rather 

than hearing the word preached, the 

service oftentimes revolves around 

praise music, fellowship and entertainment—having 

a good time and 

feeling comfortable! Anything that 

ruffles feathers, afflicts the comfortable 

is deemed judgmental and 

unkind. The apostle Paul certainly 

described our time when he stated 

that in the last days many Christians 

would have itching ears to 

hear smooth things and as a result 

would turn away their ears from 

the truth to fables. 

I believe that in order for morals 

to truly and lastingly improve in 

our society, the religious leaders of 

the United States will have to be-

gin preaching the Ten Commandments 

(and I mean not nine but all 

ten!!) in two legitimate contexts. 

First of all by example and 

preaching they must have the courage 

to rebuke sin in their churches 

and call it by its right name. The 

Bible defines sin as the transgression 

of the law (1 John 3:4) so it 

is impossible to preach about sin 

without preaching about the law. 

As parishioners look into the mirror 

of God’s law they will feel bad 

about themselves. They will understand 

that sin is a hideous monster 

that led Jesus to the cross. Satan 

makes sin appear desirable. The 

cross reveals that sin is so terrible 

that it nailed Jesus to the cross! 

Ministers must help their parishioners 

understand that their adultery, 

lying, cheating, covetousness, 

and idolatry is what nailed Jesus to 

the cross. Ministers must clearly 

and without apology show their 

members that the worldly music 

they listen to, the immoral movies 

they watch, the intemperate habits 

they indulge in and the questionable 

entertainment they participate 

in are what nailed their beloved 

Savior to the Cross. 

Secondly, when hearts are broken 

by a realization of what sin 

did to Jesus, then religious leaders 

must teach their members that God 

is not only willing to forgive them 

for breaking His law if they repent 

and confess, but that God is willing 

to give them a new heart where 

He can write His holy law so that 

they can reflect the beautiful character 

of Jesus in their words and 

actions. 

Thus ministers must teach their 

parishioners that there is a preconversion 

function of God’s law 

and a post-conversion function of 

the law. This work is not done on 

Capitol Hill but rather in church! 

Ellen White, in the literary masterpiece, 

The Desire of Ages made a 

profound statement about the mission 

of Jesus and the attitude he 

manifested toward the civil power 

of His day: 

“The government under which 

Jesus lived was corrupt and oppressive; 

on every hand were crying 

abuses,--extortion, intolerance, 

and grinding cruelty. Yet the Savior 

attempted no civil reforms.” 

[emphasis supplied] 

Rome was notorious for its licentious 

immorality. Ritual prostitution, 

murders, abortion, the 

abandonment of the newborn to 

a certain death, pedophilia, homosexuality, 

slavery, political assassinations 

and other social evils 

ran rampant. Yet nowhere in the 

gospels do we find Jesus railing 

against the civil power of Rome 

and encouraging his disciples to 

put pressure on it to conform to the 

law of God. Ellen White continues: 

“He attacked no national abuses, 

nor condemned the national enemies. 

He did not interfere with 

the authority or administration of 


those in power. He who was our 

example kept aloof from earthly 

governments.” [emphasis supplied] 

Was Jesus so callous that He did 

not care about these social evils? 

Wasn’t Jesus aware of the abuses 

that were being practiced under 

the auspices of the Roman government? 

Ellen White answers: 

“Not because He was indifferent 

to the woes of men, but because the 

remedy did not lie in merely human 

and external measures. To be 

efficient, the cure must reach men 

individually, and must regenerate 

the heart.” [emphasis supplied] 

And then Ellen White concludes 

the statement with the following 

profound words: 

“Not by the decisions of courts 

or councils or legislative assemblies, 

not by the patronage of 

worldly great men, is the kingdom 

of Christ established, but by the 

implanting of Christ’s nature in 

humanity through the work of the 

Holy Spirit. ‘As many as received 

Him, to them gave He power to 

become the sons of God, even to 

them that believe on His name: 

which were born, not of blood, nor 

of the will of the flesh, nor of the 

will of man, but of God.’ John 1:12, 

13. Here is the only power that can 

work the uplifting of mankind. 

And the human agency for the accomplishment 

of this work is the 

teaching and practicing of the word 

of God.” The Desire of Ages, pp. 

509, 510 [emphasis supplied] 

To try to correct the disease of 

society by civil laws would be like 

sprinkling leaven on top of a lump 

of dough. In order for leaven to 

raise the dough it must be put inside, 

not sprinkled outside. In the 

parable of the leaven Jesus taught 

that this is the way the kingdom of 

Jesus is to grow. When the heart 

is right then the behavior will be 

right! 

After the Day of Pentecost, the 

apostles followed the example of 

Jesus. Not once in the book of Acts 

do we find the apostles appealing 

to the civil power of Rome to correct 

the evils of society. They stuck 

to what the church had been called 

to do, preaching the Word of God 

under the powerful ministration of 

the Holy Spirit. The book of Acts 

reveals that the apostate Jewish 

institution of the day constantly 

appealed to the civil power of the 

magistrates of Rome to persecute 

the Christians! Sadly, later on in 

the fourth century when church 

and state were joined together in 

unholy matrimony, then the church 

began to persecute through the use 

of the sword of the state. 

There is one more thing that religious 

leaders of the United States 

need to do. They need to instruct 

their parishioners to keep the 

whole law out of love for Jesus! 

If I asked any believer whether it 

is alright in the sight of God for

From Ancestral Worship to Adventism

While attending the 

Southern Chapter of ASI 

in Dalton Georgia, we 

met Victor Tsague. As he 

walked briskly towards 

our booth, wearing the 

biggest smile I had ever 

seen, he raised his hands 

in the air and said “I can’t 

believe you are here. 

You’re really here! I’m 

a Seventh-day Adventist 

today because of your ministry 

and Pastor Bohr’s sermons. I 

can’t wait to meet him. Is he here 

yet?” You can imagine our enthusiasm 

to get the rest of the story. 

Victor was born and raised in 

Cameroon, Central Africa. Like 

everyone in the village, he was 

taught that the only way to reach 

God is through the spirits of his 

dead ancestors, who become divine 

after death to serve as their 

intercessors before God. He spent 

his life performing animal sacrifices 

to make sure his ancestors 

were happy, hoping they would 

intercede on his behalf before 

God. Everyone in the village lives 

in constant fear of displeasing 

them and having to face the terrible 

consequences. 

After he moved to the USA in 

2001, Victor went through what 

he calls “the seven years of tribulation” 

trying to get US immigrations 

to approve his family to 

join him. He performed countless 

animal sacrifices to his ancestors, 

but it was to no avail. One day, He 

cried out to heaven for help. Soon 

after, he met a friend who invited 

him to church for the first time. 

That day, the pastor preached on 

“Peace that only God can give”. 

He felt something that he had 

never felt before. At the end of the 

service, his friend gave him a gift, 

the Bible. Little did he know then 

how much that book would change 

his life? He went home and started 

reading, but could not understand 

much. In the meantime, he moved 

into his new apartment and discovered 

that the previous tenant 

had cable TV. The cable company 

had not disconnected it so Victor 

enjoyed it. Several weeks went by, 

and one day the cable was cut, so 


he had to buy rabbit ears for his 

television set. When Victor turned 

the TV “ON”, it was on 3ABN. He 

began to watch a Secrets Unsealed 

presentation by Pastor Bohr and 

other SDA Adventist evangelists. 

Victor began to learn things he 

never heard before: a) the state of 

the death; b) the Sabbath etc... 

After wrestling with God for 

some time, Victor surrenders his 

heart to the Lord. Shortly after 

he gave his life to Jesus, through 

much prayer, and the help of Congressman 

Jim Cooper and Vice 

President Dick Cheney, his family 

was able to move to the USA 

and join him after seven years of 

tribulation. The joy of getting the 

family united lasted for a week. 

His wife, Francoise, became hysterical. 

She wanted victor out of 

the church or she would file for a 

divorce. Once again, Victor cried 

out to heaven for help. Victor was 

then impressed to tell his wife that 

he will leave the church and resume 

ancestral worship at one condition: 

his wife will have to come 

to church to find a good reason for 

him to abandon his new faith. All 

Victor wanted was to get his wife 

to come to the cross of Calvary and 

see what Jesus has done for her. 

Although his wife was reluctant 

at first, she agreed to go to church 

with him to look for reasons to 

tell him to abandon his faith. But 

as time went by, she was convicted 

by the truth of the gospel. Six 

months later, she walked down the 

aisle with tears running down her 

face at the pastor’s appeal and gave 

her life to Jesus. But, the very next 

day, their kitchen caught fire while 

she was cooking. As she was battling 

the fire, his kids knelt down 

and started calling on the name 

of Jesus. The flames amazingly 

ceased and died on their own. The 

fire fighters arrived at his house 

after the fire was quenched and 

they could not explain how the fire 

just died out. His wife sustained 

first and second degree burns on 

her right hand and on her face, but 

amazingly her life was spared. 

After that day, his wife was 

not the same person. She started 

calling back home to Cameroon 

to witness to family and friends 

about Jesus. One morning as they 

were in bed, Victor heard a voice 

saying: “Take the good news back 

to your people, the Bantu people of 

Central Africa.” That was the beginning 

of Bantu Hope Ministries. 

His ministry is dedicated to taking 

the Good news of Jesus Christ to 

many villages still living in darkness 

in Central Africa and to distribute 

French 

Bibles during 

public evangelism.

a genuine Christian to have other 

gods, to practice idolatry, to take 

the name of the Lord in vain, to 

dishonor parents, to kill, to commit 

adultery, to steal, to bear false 

witness, or to covet, they would 

undoubtedly say ‘no’. 

Yet there is one commandment 

that the religious world refuses to 

keep and that is the Sabbath. When 

this subject is brought up the excuses 

begin to flow. ‘The Sabbath 

was for the Jews’, ‘keeping the 

Sabbath is legalism’, ‘if you keep 

the Sabbath you have fallen from 

grace’, so go the arguments. One 

suspects that the Commandment 

that presents a problem for the religious 

leaders of America is the 

fourth. They would have the civil 

power uphold all the Ten Commandments 

except the fourth! 

One disturbing element of the 

Declaration is the repeated reference 

to the need for the civil power 

to enforce the sixth and seventh 

commandments and to guarantee 

religious liberty for ‘the common 

good.’ Here is one example: 

“The biblical purpose of law is 

to preserve order and serve justice 

and the common good; yet laws 

that are unjust—and especially 

laws that purport to compel citizens 

to do what is unjust—undermine 

the common good, rather 

than serve it.” [emphasis supplied] 

Obviously in the minds of the 

framers of the Manhattan Declaration, 

abortion, same-sex marriage, 

divorce, pornography, and other 

social ills undermine the ‘common 

good.’ I would agree with them 

heartily that the violation of these 

commandments disturbs the ‘common 

good.’ Yet the question is: 

What will be the next commandment 

that needs to be emphasized 

for the betterment of the morals 

of a secular society that has lost 

its spiritual bearings? What other 

commandment will the religious 

leaders eventually get Caesar to 

enforce for the ‘common good’? 

As Seventh-day Adventists 

we have always believed that the 

Sabbath will be the great bone of 

contention at the end of time. In 

a society that has become increasingly 

secular, would not church attendance 

be the most logical step 

to get people spiritually in tune 

again and to enhance the morals 

of society? Would it not be the 

natural step to return the United 

States to what it once was in the 

good old days when everyone went 

to church on Sunday? Would it not 

be ideal for the civil power to impose 

a national Sunday law so that 

people will have this day free for 

family and spiritual enrichment? 

Would this not be for the ‘common 

good’? The concerns of the 

framers of the Manhattan Declaration 

are only the tip of the iceberg. 

Hidden underneath is the massive 

iceberg itself, stealthy, invisible, 

imperceptible, probably even for 

many of the signatories of the Dec- 


laration. 

These religious leaders are probably 

oblivious to where all of this 

is leading or what the capstone of 

their movement will be but Ellen 

G. White saw it clearly. Speaking 

about the agitation for a national 

Sunday law in the late 1880’s she 

states: 

“The Sunday movement is now 

making its way in darkness. The 

leaders are concealing the true 

issue, and many who unite in the 

movement do not themselves see 

whither the undercurrent is tending. 

Its professions are mild and 

apparently Christian, but when it 

shall speak it will reveal the spirit 

of the dragon.” Testimonies for 

the Church, p. 452 [emphasis supplied] 

Ellen White has already predicted 

how the churches in the United 

States will unite upon points of 

doctrine that they have in common 

and cooperate to have the civil 

power enforce their decrees and 

sustain their institutions. I believe 

that the Manhattan Declaration is 

a clear vindication of the accuracy 

of the following statement made 

by Ellen White in the late 1880’s: 

“When the leading churches of 

the United States, uniting upon 

such points of doctrine as are 

held by them in common, shall influence 

the state to enforce their 

decrees and to sustain their institutions, 

then Protestant America 

will have formed an image of the 

Roman hierarchy, and the infliction 

of civil penalties upon dissenters 

will inevitably result.” The 

Great Controversy, p. 445 [emphasis 

supplied] 

This scenario portrayed by Ellen 

White is no longer a mere possibility 

or probability. It is a reality 

unfolding before our very eyes. 

Both John Paul II and Benedict 

XVI have called upon the civil authorities 

to write civil legislation 

that will guarantee the observance 

of Sunday as a basic human right. 

Especially in Europe there is a 

groundswell movement led by the 

Roman Catholic Church to strong 

arm the European Parliament to 

enact a Sunday law that will cover 

the entire countries that belong to 

the European Union. The North 

American Religious Liberty Association 

informs us that recently 

“a conference was organized by a 

number of trade unions, political 

parties, Roman Catholic Bishops, 

and Protestant Churches including 

the Baptist, Methodist, Church of 

England, and Evangelical Lutherans” 

to put pressure on the European 

Union Parliament to enact a 

Sunday Law. Notably, the central 

argument of these cooperative 

groups is that a Sunday law would 

be for the ‘common good’ of all in 

that it would provide time for family 

enrichment and religious activities. 

How long will it be until the 

religious leaders of the churches

in the United States say that the 

secularization and materialization 

of society is due to a disrespect of 

the sanctity of Sunday? It cannot 

be too far away. Several Protestant 

ministers have recently expressed 

the same desire for the United 

States of America. 

To the careful reader of the 

Manhattan Declaration, the Roman 

Catholic influence is patently 

clear. First of all, the causes which 

the Declaration stands for (opposition 

to abortion, gay marriage, 

stem cell research, the culture of 

death, euthanasia and the struggle 

for human dignity and religious 

liberty), have all been spearheaded 

in recent years by Popes John Paul 

II and Benedict XVI as a rallying 

cry to unite Catholics and Protestants 

in a common social cause. 

Secondly, Pope John Paul II is 

referred to by name more than 

once in the document as one who 

was pro-life and therefore opposed 

‘the culture of death’ and numerous 

Roman Catholic priests, bishops, 

and archbishops have signed 

the document. 

Thirdly, the emphasis in the document 

upon procreation as the central 

purpose for marriage reveals a 

strong Roman Catholic influence. 

Expressions such as “the great 

good of procreation” and man and 

woman as a “reproductive unit” 

makes one suspect that Roman 

Catholic theology had much to say 

when the document was drafted. 

Fourth, the appeal to natural 

human reason in addition to 

Scripture reveals clear Roman 

Catholic thinking and terminology. 

For example, we are told that 

the declaration “is grounded in 

Holy Scripture, in natural human 

reason (which is itself, in our view, 

the gift of a beneficent God), and 

in the very nature of the human 

person.” 

And let none forget that the Roman 

Catholic Church has traditionally 

claimed to have changed 

the day of worship from Sabbath to 

Sunday without any Biblical support 

and has strongly advocated 

that governments guarantee the 

observance of Sunday as a basic 

civil right! 

Back in the late 1880’s when 

there was a strong religious movement 

in the United States to enforce 

Sunday as the national day 

of rest by a constitutional amendment, 

Ellen White stated: 

“Yet this very class [religious 

leaders in America] put forth the 

claim that the fast-spreading corruption 

is largely attributable to 

the desecration of the so-called 

“Christian sabbath,” and that the 

enforcement of Sunday observance 

would greatly improve the morals 

of society. This claim is especially 

urged in America, where the doctrine 

of the true Sabbath has been 

most widely preached.” The Great 

Controversy, p. 587 [emphasis supplied] 


The Sunday movement has been 

mostly dormant and out of view 

since then but we are told that it 

will awaken with a vengeance just 

before the end of time: 

“Those who honor the Bible Sabbath 

will be denounced as enemies 

of law and order, as breaking down 

the moral restraints of society, 

causing anarchy and corruption, 

and calling down the judgments 

of God upon the earth. Their conscientious 

scruples will be pronounced 

obstinacy, stubbornness, 

and contempt of authority. They 

will be accused of disaffection toward 

the government. Ministers 

who deny the obligation of the divine 

law will present from the pulpit 

the duty of yielding obedience 

to the civil authorities as ordained 

of God. In legislative halls and 

courts of justice, commandment 

keepers will be misrepresented and 

condemned. A false coloring will 

be given to their words; the worst 

construction will be put upon their 

motives.” The Great Controversy, 

p. 592 [emphasis supplied] 

She continues: 

“As the Protestant churches reject 

the clear, Scriptural arguments 

in defense of God’s law, they will 

long to silence those whose faith 

they cannot overthrow by the Bible. 

Though they blind their own 

eyes to the fact, they are now 

adopting a course which will lead 

to the persecution of those who 

conscientiously refuse to do what 

the rest of the Christian world are 

doing, and acknowledge the claims 

of the papal sabbath.” The Great 

Controversy, p. 592 [emphasis 

supplied] 

“The dignitaries of church and 

state will unite to bribe, persuade, 

or compel all classes to honor the 

Sunday. The lack of divine authority 

will be supplied by oppressive 

enactments. Political corruption 

is destroying love of justice and 

regard for truth; and even in free 

America, rulers and legislators, in 

order to secure public favor, will 

yield to the popular demand for a 

law enforcing Sunday observance. 

Liberty of conscience, which has 

cost so great a sacrifice, will no 

longer be respected.” The Great 

Controversy, p. 592 [emphasis 

supplied] 

Would it be acceptable or even 

desirable for Seventh-day Adventists 

to sign the Manhattan Declaration? 

Would it be wrong to cooperate 

with these religious leaders 

in areas that we agree on? The 

answer is that Seventh-day Adventists 

could never sign a document 

such as this! Why not? Do we not 

believe in the sanctity of life? Do 

we not believe in marriage between 

a man and a woman? Do 

we not believe in religious liberty? 

The answer to these questions is a 

resounding yes! Seventh-day Adventists 

agree with these religious 

leaders on the disease but we disagree 

on the cure. We believe that

the cure for these social evils is 

found in the church not in the state. 

Ellen White gives the clear reason 

why we could not sign such a Declaration: 

“The leaders of the Sunday 

movement may advocate reforms 

which the people need, principles 

which are in harmony with the 

Bible; yet while there is with these 

a requirement which is contrary 

to God’s law [Sunday legislation], 

His servants cannot unite with 

them. Nothing can justify them in 

setting aside the commandments 

of God for the precepts of men.”

Let us continue to preach the 

Word of God with power and conviction. 

Let’s reach out with the 

saving gospel to a world that is 

perishing in sin. Let’s not get distracted 

from our mission by using 

methods that produce no lasting 

change. God has not called us 

to criticize every decision that is 

made by the federal government. 

Hearts are changed by the foolishness 

of preaching. These are 

exciting times to live in. May we 

be wise as serpents and harmless 

as doves as we sail the dangerous 

waters of end time events.

New Equipment Enhances Media Ministry

Dear Friends: 

For quite a long time now the Secrets 

Unsealed board, employees 

and volunteers have been praying 

fervently to the Lord to provide 

the necessary equipment for us to 

set up a production 

studio 

where we can 

continue to 

prepare quality 

Present 

Truth materials 

for television 

broadcast 

and distribution. 

As many of 

you know, we started production at 

Secrets Unsealed about eight years 

ago. At that time we purchased the 

best cameras available for the price 

but they were not HD (high definition). 

Since then everything has 

gone HD and our equipment has 

been aging after hundreds of hours 

of production. All this has led us 

to be concerned that our productions 

might fall short of the high 

standards that would bring honor 

and glory to God, be able to meet 

new broadcasting standards, and 

the new demands to produce more. 

Recently the Lord parted the red 

sea for us in that He has made it 

possible for us to now be on satellite 

television seven days per week 

New High Definition Camera 

via 3ABN, 3ABN Proclaim, and 

the Amazing Facts TV Channel. 

In addition, Federal regulations 

now mandate that our programs offer 

closed captioning when broadcasting 

on satellite, 

and we 

are happy to 

report that we 

recently began 

working hard 

to make closed 

c a p t i o n i n g 

available for 

our hearing impaired 

viewers. 

Because of our facility and equipment 

limitations there are many 

projects we cannot complete with 

our present setup because the wiring 

configuration is attached to 

the church and cannot be moved 

off-site. We are currently limited 

to the type of programming 

that we are able to produce. The 

church building is not conducive 

to doing things such as panel discussions, 

health lectures, prophecy 

seminars, question and answer 

sessions, interviews, on-location 

filming, nor filming our Summit 

presentations and more. 

We are humbled at how God has 

grown Secrets Unsealed, and just 

a month and a half ago, our prayers 


were answered in a most unexpected 

way! While I was speaking at 

a youth event in the northwest, a 

supporter of our ministry donated 

to Secrets Unsealed a brand new 

full production studio setup including 

four HD cameras, tripods, 

mixer, sound board, lighting, intercom, 

furniture, drapes, cables, 

and many other pieces of high tech 

equipment. We praise the Lord 

from whom all blessings flow!! 

When we began requesting donations 

for HD equipment upgrade 

over a year ago. Many of you responded 

favorably, and we were 

able to purchase a boom, and our 

first HD camera which we used 

during the new production of the 

Three Angels’ Message series currently 

airing on 3ABN, and we 

praise God for your response thus far. 

For the last eight years, we have 

occupied two offices at the Fresno 

Central Church, and have long 

since outgrown 

the space we 

occupy. So 

now our dilemma 

is this; 

we have all the 

needed production 

equipment 

for a studio 

but do not have a studio/facility 

to put the equipment in! We have 

been offered free services from a 

professional building contractor, 

but have not the land on which to 

build. At present we have $50,000 

Cool Running Studio Lights 

in hand that has been donated for a 

facility, however, it is not enough. 

When the Lord raised this ministry, 

He made it possible for us to 

raise $250,000, and be up and running 

inside of nine months, Amen! 

We believe that with your help, He 

can do even greater miracles now. 

What does the pen of inspiration 

tell us? “We have nothing to fear 

for the future, except as we shall 

forget the way the Lord has led us, 

and His teaching in our past history.”

At Secrets Unsealed we feel a 

deep sense of urgency. The signs 

of the times cry out that the coming 

of Jesus is even at the door and 

we long to produce Present Truth 

materials that will strengthen the 

saints for the crisis ahead as well 

as reach out to the world with the 

three angels’ message. There is 

still so much to do before probation’s 

close and we wish to cooperate 

with the 

Lord in the 

finishing of 

His work. 

I know 

that we are 

living in tough 

economic 

times but I also 

know that man’s extremity is God’s 

opportunity. Throughout history, 

God’s people have ever been willing 

to give sacrificially to advance 

His work. The time is fast coming 

when our money will be worthless

and all that we have failed to invest 

in the Lord’s cause will be useless. 

God has spoken through Ellen 

White about the danger of hanging 

on to surplus property in these last 

days. In a chapter titled: “Duty in 

View of the Time of Trouble” God 

counsels: 

“ H o u s e s 

and lands 

will be of 

no use to the 

saints in the 

time of trouble, 

for they 

will then 

have to flee 

before infuriated 

mobs, and at that time their 

possessions cannot be disposed 

of to advance the cause of present 

truth. I was shown that it is the 

will of God that the saints should 

cut loose from every encumbrance 

before the time of trouble comes, 

and make a covenant with God 

through sacrifice. 

If they 

have their 

property on 

the altar and 

earnestly inquire 

of God 

for duty, He

will teach 

them when 

to dispose 

of these things. Then they will 

be free in the time of trouble and 

have no clogs to weigh them down.

supply the lack; now our property 

is useless. Oh, that we had let it go 

and laid up treasure in heaven!’”

to His fold, many of His sheep in 

other denominations are finding 

Truth and just recently we met a 

Pastor while at the General Conference 

Session that shared with 

us how many people in India are 

accepting Truth and are becoming 

Seventh-day Adventists and praising 

God for the ministry of Secrets 

Unsealed. Amen! 

A couple of weeks ago I received 

an invitation to speak at Guantanamo, 

Cuba. The conference president, 

Pastor Lorenzo, invited me 

to come next April to hold a one 

week effort. One of the reasons 

for the invitation is that an entire 

Methodist church in Guantanamo 

accepted the Seventh-day Adventist 

message as they watched 

“Cracking the Genesis Code.” To 

date over 40 persons have been 

baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist 

Church! Praise the Lord! 

Stories like these make the work of 

Secrets Unsealed well worthwhile 

and give us courage to press forward.

The Widow, the Judge and the Adversary 

Lesson #5 

Luke 18:1-8, COL 164-180; GC 613-634 

Central Lesson and Time Frame 

1. Which two central lessons did Christ teach in this parable? That “men 

ought to pray and not to .” (Lk. 

18:1) 

2. Though these two lessons apply to God’s people in all ages, they have 

special reference to the period just before Christ’s 

coming. 

(COL 164) 

3. In the immediately preceding context of this parable, Christ had been 

comparing His second coming with the days of 

and the 

days of . (Lk. 17:26-37) 

4. At the conclusion of the parable, the question is asked: “Nevertheless, 

when the Son of man 

, shall he find 

on the earth?” (Lk. 18:8) 

Symbols of the Parable 

1. The judge in the parable represents (Lk. 18:7) 

“Christ here draws a sharp 

between the unjust judge 

and .” (COL 165) 

Note: The judge symbolizes God not by way of comparison but by way of 

contrast. We shall find that both God and the judge delay the meeting out 

of justice but for different reasons. 


2. In the Bible, a woman is employed as a symbol of the 

(Ephesians 5:25-27). 

3. The widow represents God’s who cry out to Him 

day and night. (Lk. 18:7) 

Note: Scholars who have studied this parable agree that the widow’s husband 

most likely owed a large sum of money to a certain creditor. Upon 

his death, the creditor confiscated all his possessions and left the widow 

totally destitute. She had no children, no home, no money and no friends. 

Ellen White comments: “The woman who entreated the judge for justice 

had lost her husband by death. Poor and friendless, she had no means of 

retrieving her ruined fortunes.” (COL 165) 

4. Christ describes the elect as living especially in the midst of the final 

time of trouble: “And except those days [the time of trouble] should be 

, there should no flesh be saved: but for the 

sake those days shall be shortened. . . . For there 

shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great 

and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, 

they shall deceive the very .” (Mt. 24:22, 24) 

5. The parable tells us that the woman to the judge for 

justice. (Lk. 18:3) 

Note: The verb “came” here is better translated “kept coming” or “continued 

coming.” The sense of the verb is seen in verse 5 where the judge 

says: “I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.” The 

widow did not come once and then give up. She was perseverant, persistent 

and insistent. She was not about to give up. 

6. The adversary (antidikon) in the parable represents . 

In 1 Peter 5:8 we are warned: “Be sober, be vigilant; because your

, as a roaring lion, walketh about, 

seeking whom he may .” 

Note: Ellen White remarks: “Satan is the great adversary. . . . The work of 

Satan as an accuser began in heaven. This has been his work on earth ever 

since man’s fall, and it will be his work in a special sense as we approach 

nearer to the close of this world’s history.” (COL 166, 167-168). 

7. The judge delayed in answering the widow’s pleas. We are told that “he 

would not for a 

.” (Lk. 18:4) Likewise, God will delay in 

answering the pleas of His elect: “And shall not God 

his 

own elect, which cry day and night unto Him, though he bear 

with them?” (Lk. 18:7) 

Note: The expression, “though he bear long with them” is variously translated. 

The New International Version says: “Will he keep putting them 

off?” The Jerusalem Bible has it: “even when he delays to help them?” 

The Weymouth translation states: “although he delays vengeance on their 

behalf?” It is clear that God will delay in delivering His people!! Yet the 

contrast between God and the judge is clear. Whereas the judge capriciously 

delays to answer the widow but finally does to get her off his back, 

God delays to answer his elect because He loves them. 

The Special Fulfillment of the Parable 

1. We have seen that the judge represents , the adversary 

is the , and the widow symbolizes the . 

Though this parable applies generally to all ages, it applies especially to 

those who will go through the time of trouble. 

2. The widow woman represents God’s afflicted people: “The beloved of 

God pass 

days, bound in chains, shut in prison bars, 


sentenced to be slain, some apparently left to die of starvation in dark and 

loathsome dungeons. No 

ear is open to hear their moans; 

no human hand is ready to lend them .” (GC 626) 

3. The adversary represents Satan: “As accuses the 

people of God on account of their sins, the Lord permits him to try them 

to the 

. Their confidence in God, their faith and firmness, 

will be tested.” (GC 618) 

4. Like the widow, the faith of God’s people will not waver in spite of the 

delay: “Their faith does not fail because their prayers are not 

answered. Though suffering the keenest anxiety, 

and distress, they do not 

their intercessions.” (GC 

619) 

5. The expression “cry out” in the parable translates the Greek word boao. 

This is a very intense word which describes a person crying out in agony. 

It is used in Acts 8:7 where the evil 

cried out as they 

were cast out by the apostles. It is also used in Luke 9:38 where the 

cried out to Jesus for healing. In Matthew 27:46 we find Jesus 

crying out “ My God, My God, Why hast thou 

Me.” 

6. The following paragraph from The Great Controversy, pp. 630-631 explains 

the reason for the delay: 

Could men see with heavenly vision, they would behold companies of angels 

that excel in strength stationed about those who have kept the word of 

Christ’s patience. With sympathizing tenderness, angels have witnessed 

their 

and have heard their prayers. They are waiting 

the word of their Commander to snatch them from their peril. But they 

must 

yet a little longer. The people of God must drink of 

the cup and be baptized with the baptism. The very , 

so painful to them, is the best answer to their petitions. As they endeavor

to wait trustingly for the Lord to work they are led to exercise faith, hope, 

and patience, which have been too little exercised during their religious 

experience. Yet for the 

sake the time of trouble will 

be 

. “Shall not God avenge His own elect, which cry 

day and night unto Him? . . . I tell you that He will avenge them speedily.” 

Luke 18:7, 8. 

7. The agonizing prayers of God’s people and the delay can be illustrated 

with the experience of 

in Genesis 32. When his brother 

was coming to destroy him, Jacob poured out his heart to God and struggled 

with Him all night. Finally, in the morning, God 

him 

and changed his (Genesis 32:28, 29) 

8. The story of Job also illustrates the plight of God’s people in the time of 

trouble. Job lost all he had–children, wife, friends, possessions, health. He 

was accused by 

before the heavenly courts. He pleaded 

with God for an explanation of his sufferings. Yet he exclaimed: “Though 

He me, yet will I in Him.” (Job 

13:15). In the end, Job’s prayers were heard and his cause was vindicated! 

9. Perseverant prayer is also illustrated by the story of the woman of 

. In spite of the fact that Jesus kept putting her off, she 

boldly continued coming. Finally, Jesus said: “O woman, great is thy 

.” (Mt. 15:21-28) 

10. The time of delay in the time of trouble is described in Isaiah 54:7-8: 

“For a small 

have I forgotten thee; but with great 

will I gather thee. In a wrath I my 

face from thee for a 

; but with everlasting kindness 

will I have 

one thee, saith the LORD thy Redeemer.” 


The Unanswered Question is Answered 

1. This parable ends with a question which is left unanswered: “Nevertheless, 

when the Son of man 

, sh a l l he fi nd 

on the earth?” (Luke 18:8).

[better, “perseverance”] of the saints: here are they that 

keep the commandments of God, and the

The question is, What is the faith of Jesus? It is the faith which Jesus had 

during His trials. And what was that faith like? 

3. All the elements of this parable are present in the passion of Jesus in 

the Garden and on the cross. The adversary who tortured Jesus was 

. (Lk. 22:53) Jesus had nothing on earth to lean upon. 

His 

forsook him (Mt. 26:56). He did not even have 

any 

on His back. (Mt. 27:35) He begged His Father 

to take away the 

. (Mt. 26:39-44) Yet the answer did 

not appear to come, it was delayed. Jesus felt 

of His 

own Father. (Mt. 27:46) Yet in the end He was vindicated. 

4. Hebrews 5:7 describes the perseverant faith of Jesus: “Who in the days 

of his 

, when he had offered up and 

with strong 

and 

unto him that was able to 

him 

from death, and was 

in that he feared..” 

Why the Delay? 

1. Notice the reason for the trials of Jesus: “Though he were a 

, yet he he by 

the things which he .” (Heb. 5:8)

2. Job explained the benefit of his trials: “When he [God] hath 

me, I shall come forth as 

.” (Job 23:10) This can be illustrated 

by the three young men who were thrown into the fiery furnace. 

When they came forth, their characters were composed of pure gold. 

3. Ellen White explains that all “ must be consumed 

that the of Christ might be reflected.” 

(GC 621). 

4. The apostle Peter explained the reason why God allows trials: “Wherein 

ye greatly , though now for a , 

if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations. That the 

of your faith, being much more precious than of 

that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be 

found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ. . .” 

(I Peter 1:6-7; read also James 5:7-8; Hebrews 10:37-39; Luke 21:16-19)

The Prayer Life of Jesus 

1. The prayer life of Jesus is described in Mark 1:35: “And in the 

, rising up a great while day, he went 

out, and departed into a 

place, and there prayed.” 

Note: Jesus did not utter long public prayers. His prayer life was defined 

by a one on one conversation with His Father. So it must be with us. 

2. It is vital for us to learn to pray before the final crisis. Ellen White has 

stated: 


“The season of distress and anguish before us will require a faith that can 

endure weariness, delay, and hunger--a faith that will not faint though 

severely tried. The period of probation is granted to all to prepare for that 

time. Jacob prevailed because he was persevering and determined. His 

victory is an evidence of the power of importunate prayer. All who will 

lay hold of God’s promises, as he did, and be as earnest and persevering 

as he was, will succeed as he succeeded. Those who are unwilling to deny 

self, to agonize before God, to pray long and earnestly for His blessing, 

will not obtain it. Wrestling with God--how few know what it is! How few 

have ever had their souls drawn out after God with intensity of desire until 

every power is on the stretch. When waves of despair which no language 

can express sweep over the suppliant, how few cling with unyielding faith 

to the promises of God. 

“Those who exercise but little faith now, are in the greatest danger of falling 

under the power of satanic delusions and the decree to compel the conscience. 

And even if they endure the test they will be plunged into deeper 

distress and anguish in the time of trouble, because they have never made 

it a habit to trust in God. The lessons of faith which they have neglected 

they will be forced to learn under a terrible pressure of discouragement. 

We should now acquaint ourselves with God by proving His promises. 

Angels record every prayer that is earnest and sincere. We should rather 

dispense with selfish gratifications than neglect communion with God. 

The deepest poverty, the greatest self-denial, with His approval, is better 

than riches, honors, ease, and friendship without it. We must take time to 

pray. If we allow our minds to be absorbed by worldly interests, the Lord 

may give us time by removing from us our idols of gold, of houses, or of 

fertile lands.” Great Controversy, pg. 621-622
