Dear Members and Friends, 

This last fiscal year (July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009) 

was one of achievement and challenge. Strong attendance 

throughout the year – almost 70,000 visitors – demonstrated 

continued public interest in the “renewed Currier” during the 

museum’s first full year of operation in its expanded facility. 

The new additions, designed by Ann Beha Architects, received 

five architectural awards. The building continues to perform 

very well, fulfilling the promise to make more of the collections 

publicly accessible. 

Early in FY09 the Currier inaugurated its special exhibition 

program with two very popular shows: Andy Warhol: Pop 

Politics in the fall of 2008 and Building Books: the Art of David 

Macaulay in the spring of 2009. The Currier also launched a 

new exhibition series celebrating the strong artistic community 

of the region with Spotlight New England. The first in the series 

highlighted a dramatic site-specific installation by Seacoast 

artist Kirsten Reynolds, and the second presented a dynamic 

pairing of sculpture and painting by Gary Haven Smith of 

Northwood, NH and drawings by Gerald Auten of Norwich, VT.

Special exhibitions offered opportunities for many educational 

programs through partnerships with colleague institutions like 

the Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College, the Millyard 

Museum, the SEE Science Center, and the Seacoast Children’s 

Museum. A young professionals task force provided input into 

various programs, especially monthly First Thursdays, in an 

effort to engage a new generation of visitors. The IMLS-funded 

Art Afterschool project brought docents, staff, and artists to 

five afterschool sites in the Manchester area for five months of 

programming. This extensive partnership was evaluated by RMC 

Research in an effort to strengthen the museum’s offerings for 

youth during afterschool hours. The Currier offered two weeks 

of programming free of admission to everyone during February 

and April school vacations. Making the museum accessible to 

as wide an audience as possible became even more important 

during these challenging times.

As the Art Center prepared to celebrate its 70th anniversary in 

calendar year 2009, more than 1,472 students were enrolled in 

semester-long classes, workshops, and vacation camps – one 

of the highest enrollments in recent years. Another 650 students 

participated in off-site, school-based programs led by Art Center 

faculty. The Currier’s first on-line auction, combined with a Family 

Day to Play fundraiser, raised almost $20,000 to support the Art 

Center’s diverse studio programs. 

The Currier received an extraordinary bequest from studio potters 

Mary and Ed Scheier, who lived in New Hampshire from 1940 

to 1968, when they became nationally known for their ceramic 

vessels. During their lifetimes, Ed and Mary gave the Currier their 

personal collection of their own ceramics, paintings, weavings 

and sculpture, their personal library, as well as works of art 

by many friends. They designated that three-quarters of their 

bequest form an endowment for the purchase of art with the 

balance going to endowment to support operations. With these 

funds, the Currier will strengthen its growing collections of craft, 

a world in which Ed and Mary Scheier were major participants 

and mentors to many younger artists. 

The collections of art grew with some remarkable acquisitions, 

especially in the area of ceramics and photography this year. 

Toshiko Takaezu, an internationally renowned potter, gave the 

Currier sixteen pieces, including a group of her closed forms 

which are signature works of her mature period. The museum 

purchased a ceramic piece by David Shaner, a distinguished 

teacher at Alfred University and ceramic artist, as well as a 

dynamic early stack by Peter Voulkos, who challenged the 

traditional notion of pottery as primarily functional.

The Currier also received one of the most important gifts 

of photography in its history from Christian K. Keesee, who 

gave thirty-five vintage photographs by Brett Weston, one of 

the masters of the medium in the twentieth century. Varujan 

Boghosian, a painter and sculptor who taught for many years 

at Dartmouth College, gave the museum a major sculpture 

entitled Titan’s Goblet in celebration of the life of David F. 

Putnam of Keene. Mr. Putnam, who died in 2006, was a great 

supporter of the New Hampshire cultural community and with 

his wife, Rosamond, a lead donor to the museum’s recent capital 

campaign. 

Throughout the year, Board and staff shaped a Strategic Plan to 

carry the museum through the next three years, by which time 

we hope the economy will be on a more solid footing. The plan 

greatly benefits from input from Advisory Council members, its 

Guild of Volunteers, and several community groups from across 

the state who gathered to share their perceptions of the Currier 

and to contribute ideas to help make the museum a more visible 

and widely used resource throughout the region. The plan’s eight 

primary goals support the Currier’s on-going efforts to reach 

more communities throughout the state, to raise the visibility of 

its collections and programs across New England, to improve 

the visitor experience, to build its art collections and programs 

with its audiences foremost in mind, to strengthen all sources 

of earned and contributed income, and to attract creative staff, 

management and volunteer leadership to ensure a strong future 

of community service.

While these are many of the high points of the last fiscal year, 

we would be remiss if we did not note that the Currier, like all 

businesses and non-profits, felt the effects of the precipitous 

decline in the economy during the fall of 2008. With the decline 

in market value of the endowments, the Currier acted quickly to 

make cuts of about $400,000, or nine percent, to its operations, 

including programs and staff. As we budgeted for the coming 

fiscal year, additional cuts were made to keep the museum 

operating within its financial limits. The museum also refinanced its 

bond for the expansion at a favorable, fixed rate payment. 

Despite these challenging times, the Currier ended the year with 

a balanced budget. For this we thank all our donors – business, 

foundation, government and many, many individuals, including 

several who significantly increased giving to help the museum get 

through this difficult year. We are also proud of the extra effort 

the staff and volunteers made so that the museum could continue 

to present enriching, entertaining exhibitions and programs. We 

thank you for your generous support in helping the Currier stay 

strong in its efforts to serve the state and region.

Note: The pro forma statement of operating activities recognized the investment income and transfers from the endowment funds in accordance 

with the Board of Trustees funding policy as support revenue rather than all investment income, gains and losses. In addition, certain nonoperating 

expenditures are not recognized, including collection items purchased but not capitalized, depreciation and interest expense. 

This presentation also excludes the change in fair value of the interest rate swap. Accordingly, this presentation differs significantly from the 

statement of activities as presented in the Museum’s audited financial statements and from generally accepted accounting principles. The 

Museum’s policy is to annually allocate 5% of the average valuation of the operating endowment funds over the previous ten quarters 

to fund the Museum’s operations. Management believes this pro forma presentation reflects the true support and revenue available to fund 

the Museum’s annual operating expenses for the periods presented. The Museum does not capitalize its collection and objects of art.
