Appeals court upholds Fla. gay adoption ban
Plaintiffs ‘surprised by hostility’ of ruling; Trantalis assails ‘hypocrisy’
By Ryan Lee
Correspondent
After deliberating for almost a year, a
three-judge panel of the 11th Circuit Court of
Appeals ruled unanimously Jan. 28 that the
state of Florida can legally bar sexually active
gay men and lesbians from adopting children.
In a case brought by three gay families,
the Atlanta-based federal appeals court held
that adoption is a privilege granted by a state,
invalidating the plaintiffs’ claims that their
constitutional rights to equal protection and
due process were violated.
“The state of Florida has made the
determination that it is not in the best interests
of its displaced children to be adopted by
individuals who ‘engage in current,
voluntary homosexual activity’ and we have
found nothing in the Constitution that
forbids this policy judgment,” Judge Stanley
Birch wrote in the panel’s decision.
Birch was joined in his opinion by Judge
Edward Carnes of Alabama; both men were
appointed to the 11th Circuit by President
George H.W. Bush. A third judge on the panel,
Proctor Hug, Jr., was appointed to the 9th
Circuit Appeals Court in 1977 by President
Jimmy Carter.
Local gay man says he was falsely accused
of indecent exposure in Kendall restroom raid
By Phil LaPadula
Managing Editor
It started as a simple trip to the mall to
buy a tie. It ended after five hours in a
sweltering police paddy wagon and seven
hours at the Miami-Dade County jail. That’s
how Claudio Guadagno, a local gay man,
described his ordeal, which started early in
the afternoon of Jan. 22 at the Town &
Country Mall in Kendall. He was one of 21
men arrested Jan. 22-23 in a Miami-Dade
police undercover operation in the mall’s
restroom.
He has been charged with “exposure
of sexual organs.” But Guadagno said he
did nothing in the restroom except use the
toilet to relieve himself. He insisted that he
was falsely accused and arrested simply
because he happened to be in the restroom
that day. An angry Guadagno has hired a
lawyer, plans to plead not guilty and will
settle for “nothing less than complete
dismissal of the charges.”
Guadagno said he went to the Town &
Country Mall, which is about a half mile
“deeply disappointing.”
“We think the court is wrong in
believing that government can continue to
discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation
after the Supreme Court’s decision in
Lawrence v. Texas last summer,” Matt Coles,
director of the ACLU’s Lesbian & Gay Rights
Project, said in a written statement.
“We think the court is wrong in thinking
that the Constitution lets the government
assume that sexual orientation has anything
to do with good parenting,” Coles said.
The reaction from state and local gay
rights advocates was swift and very critical
of the ruling. Equality Florida, a statewide
gay rights organization, issued a statement
saying it was “outraged over the ruling” and
calling on the Florida legislature to repeal
the anti-gay adoption law, which Equality
Florida described as “state-sanctioned
bigotry.”
Noting that the Florida law allows gay
men and lesbians to serve as foster parents
but prohibits them from solidifying their
relationships with their children through
adoption, local attorney and Fort Lauderdale
City Commissioner Dean Trantalis criticized
“the hypocrisy of their sense of family.” “The
idea of family is to maintain a long-term
cohesive environment for children, and this
decision undermines that,” Trantalis said.
from his home in Kendall, on Jan. 22 to buy
a tie for a job interview. While shopping at
Sears, he started having stomach cramps,
so he went to the restroom.
According to Guadagno, he entered
the restroom at about 12:20 p.m., went into
a stall and closed the door. While inside
the stall, Guadagno said he noticed
someone outside the stall peering at him
through the crack in the door. “I noticed
two feet standing in front of the door,” he
said. “I hit the door and said, ‘Hey, it’s
occupied.’”
After he exited the stall, Guadagno said
he noticed that there were two empty stalls,
making him wonder why someone would
be trying to get into his stall. He also
noticed two Hispanic individuals, both of
whom he had seen when he first entered
the restroom. He said one of them was
wearing a red shirt and kept going in and
out of the restroom. “I never spoke to
anyone and I never acknowledged
anyone,” Guadagno said. “When I was in
“Again, prejudice and bigotry win out, and
children are denied a better way of life.”
Trantalis said he expects the case to
“make it’s way up to the Supreme Court.”
But he said there was no guarantee that the
high court would hear the case or would rule
differently than the lower courts.
Officials with the state of Florida could
not immediately be reached for comment on
the case, known as Lofton v. Kearney, while
conservative groups quickly lauded the
decision.
Besen denounces participation of ‘ex-gay’ on House panel
By Phil LaPadula
Author and South Florida-based activist Wayne Besen
took time out from his 55-city book tour last week to denounce
the inclusion of an “ex-gay” leader on a panel that testified
Jan. 23 at a House subcommittee hearing on President Bush’s
faith-based initiative.
Besides the subcommittee hearing — which included
five witnesses from the conservative religious group Focus
on the Family — Besen also pointed to the recent opening
of a faith-based prison in Florida as another example of an
intensifying assault on the separation of church and state,
which Besen believes threatens the civil rights of gay men
and lesbians.
“The only thing that protects us is the separation of
church and state. That’s the only thing that keeps us from
becoming Iran,” said Besen, who is the author of “Anything
But Straight,” which argues that “ex-gay” ministries do
psychological harm to gay people. “If we lose that, [gay
people] will be the big losers, more than any other group in
the country. We’re the ones that they’re going to justify not
Appeals court upholds Fla. gay adoption ban
Plaintiffs ‘surprised by hostility’ of ruling, ACLU says
ADOPTION from front page
The 11th Circuit heard arguments in the Florida adoption
case on March 4, but the ACLU asked the court to withhold
a ruling until a decision was reached in Lawrence vs. Texas.
After the Supreme Court’s June 26 ruling, the Florida
plaintiffs were “obviously optimistic,” ACLU spokesperson
Paul Cates said Wednesday.
“But I think we were really surprised by the hostility of
the [11th Circuit] opinion,” Cates said.
Birch, appointed to the appeals court in 1990, gave the
keynote speech at the October 1997 annual dinner of the
Stonewall Bar Association of Georgia, a gay lawyers group,
just months after he surprised some legal experts with his
powerful dissent to the 11th Circuit’s decision upholding
Georgia Attorney General Michael Bowers’ right to fire a
lesbian attorney.
“We’ve all witnessed, in the last couple of years, a sea
change in the way the law looks upon the gay and lesbian
community,” Birch said then, calling the group for gay
attorneys and other similar organizations “vital to the
continued vitality of our nation.”
But in the Florida ruling, Birch was willing to accept the
justifications behind Florida’s blanket decision to exclude
sexually active homosexuals from adopting children, despite
the “exemplary” role he said the gay plaintiffs in the case had
played in foster parenting HIV-positive children they now
wished to adopt.
Birch dismissed the plaintiffs’ arguments that Florida’s
policy discriminates against gays, keeps thousands of
children from possible homes and is not supported by social
science research or major child welfare organizations.
“The best interests of children … are not automatically
served by adoption into any available home merely because
it is permanent,” the panel ruled.
The panel also disagreed with the ACLU’s contention that
Florida’s argument that it bans gays from adopting in order to
promote homes with a father and a mother is undermined by its
willingness to allow single heterosexuals to adopt.
“It is not irrational to think that heterosexual singles
have a markedly greater probability of eventually establishing
a married household and, thus, providing their adopted
children with a stable, dual-gender parenting environment,”
Birch wrote.
It is up to the state legislature — not the court — to
determine if Florida’s adoption policy needs to be changed,
the judges ruled.
But Greg Nevins, a senior staff attorney with the Lambda
Legal Defense & Education Fund, said the judges abandoned
their duty to strike down unconstitutional laws.
“They talked about being deferential to the legislature,
but the court has the responsibility to strike down
discriminatory laws passed by the legislature, and this court
abdicated that responsibility,” Nevins said.
The ACLU can either ask the three-judge panel to
reconsider the case, ask the entire 11th Circuit Court of Appeals
to rehear the case or appeal the decision directly to the U.S.
Supreme Court.
The ACLU has yet to decide which option it will pursue,
but Cates said he believes the ruling will eventually be
overturned.
“One of our major arguments is that after the Supreme
Court ruled in Lawrence vs. Texas, they basically said these
kinds of laws will no longer be valid,” Cates said.
Broad impact feared
The 11th Circuit Court has jurisdiction over Florida,
Georgia and Alabama, and it is unclear what impact
Wednesday’s ruling will have on gay adoptions in those
states.
Neither Alabama nor Georgia currently bans gay men
and lesbians from adopting children, but Lambda’s Nevins
said he fears the court ruling may open the door for similar
measures in those states.
Florida enacted its gay adoption ban in 1977, as part of a
nationally publicized anti-gay crusade by singer and former
beauty queen Anita Bryant.
While Utah and Mississippi also ban adoptions by gay
couples, Florida’s policy — which applies to single gays as
well — is the most stringent in the country.
“Florida has a right to legislate its moral disapproval of
homosexuality,” Casey Walker, one of the lawyers for the
state, has argued. “And children need a married mother and
father to develop into healthy adults.”
But the ACLU’s Coles and other gay rights activists
said children would be hurt by Wednesday’s ruling.
“We are distressed that the court’s decision will leave
thousands of children without the homes and the parents
they deserve,” Coles said.
The ACLU will vigorously oppose any efforts by the
state to take away children currently living with gay families
involved in the lawsuit, officials said.
the restroom, there was no activity going on except people
relieving themselves.”
As he was leaving the mall and returning to his car,
Guadagno said he was grabbed roughly by two police
officers and arrested. “I was terrified,” he said. “They never
even told me what I was being arrested for.”
The police photographed him, and an officer took a DNA
sample. “I asked why she was taking a DNA sample, and she
said, ‘It’s required now because of the Patriot Act,’” Guadagno
said. The officer told him if he didn’t agree to the DNA test, he
would have to spend 21 days in jail, Guadagno said.
Guadagno said he and several other prisoners were held
for 5½ hours in a police paddy wagon in the mall parking lot.
According to Guadagno, for at least three of those hours
there was no air conditioning in the vehicle and the windows
were closed. “It was hot in there,” he said. The prisoners
were never given any water, Guadagno said. He said the
plastic handcuffs around his wrists were so tight that they
bruised his wrists. “We were tortured,” he said.
Meanwhile, the officers ate pizza outside the paddy
wagon, never offered the prisoners any food and taunted
them with anti-gay insults, Guadagno said.
Guadagno recalled that one officer said, “You bunch of
faggots, you deserve what you get.” He said the same officer
threw mock kisses at him and said, “Come here Sweetheart.
You got what you deserved.”
He said one man pleaded with the police to let him go
because his children were in day care and there was no one
to pick them up. The police woudn’t even let the man make a
phone call, Guadagno said. The man told Guadagno that he
wasn’t gay and was arrested for simply unzipping his pants
at a urinal in the restroom.
According to the arrest report provided by the Miami-
Dade police, Guadagno was arrested by Officer A. Zabaleta,
who was “working a plain clothes detail.” The police report
says Guadagno “came out of a stall in the men’s room and
approached this officer and exposed himself. The defendant
then began to masturbate in front of this officer.”
Guadagno vehemently denies the charge against him. “I
didn’t do anything except use the bathroom,” he said. “To
whom did I expose myself except the man who was peeking
through the crack in the door?”
Guadagno said he was released from jail at 1:40 a.m. on
Jan. 23 after posting a $500 bond. He was released without
his wallet or ID.
He said he got a case of bronchitis from the ordeal and also
missed his job interview. He plans to “fight to the end.” “This
is just wrong what they’re doing; It’s just bigotry.” he said.
Robert Williams, public information officer for the Miami-
Dade Police Department, said he could not comment on an
active case. But he confirmed that 21 men were arrested during
the period of Jan. 22-23 at the Town & Country Mall restroom.
Julio Estorino, a Cuban radio personality and news anchor
on the Archdiocese of Miami’s station, was arrested in the
mall’s restroom on the same day that Guadagno was booked.
Like Guadagno, he was charged with “exposure of sexual
organs.” Like Guadagno, Estorino denies any wrongdoing and
plans to contest the charge in court.
In a press statement, Estorino said, “I used the restroom in
the same way any man would use the restroom. I have turned
this matter to my attorney for appropriate action. I have faith in
God and in our legal system. I trust that I will be exonerated.”
Money rolls in from AIDS ride
Bike It & B.E.A.R. It presents checks to six service organizations
By Andy Zeffer
Features Editor
The results are in. The Bike It & B.E.A.R
It for AIDS ride presented a total of $169,304
to six different Florida AIDS service
organizations. On Friday, Jan. 23,
representatives from all six organizations
gathered at the Schubert Resort in Fort
Lauderdale. The committee that produced the
event gave a check for $40,148 to AIDS Help,
Inc. in Key West; $27,959 to Broward House
in Fort Lauderdale; $25,661 to Florida AIDS
Action Foundation, Inc. in Tampa; $29,084
to Hug Me in Orlando; $22,237 to Sarasota
CCC in Sarasota; and $24,214 to South Beach
AIDS Project in South Beach.
The bike ride took place on the weekend
of Nov. 6-9. Riders were required to collect a
little over a $1,000 each to participate in the
event. Fifty percent of the money they
collected went to a general fund to be split
among the agencies. Riders can then distribute
the remaining half of the donations among the
benefiting organizations as they see fit.
“It was a really great event,” said Dr.
Keith Riddle of Broward House, who was a
volunteer for the event. “There were stops
along the way where representatives from
different agencies talked to the riders about
the services they provide.”
On the first night, the riders gathered in
South Miami and had a kick-off at Gameworks,
leisure venue with restaurants and bars. The
next morning, the race got started and went
to Marathon, where riders spent the night.
The following day, riders pedaled down to
Key West where the race finished.
“The organizations knew the
total amount of funds raised but did
not know how much each one of them
would receive individually,” said Glen
Weinzimer, director of public relations
for the ride. “This event was different
in that the riders were allowed to
distribute half the money they raised
as they saw fit. But the other half was
evenly split, so each agency was
guaranteed $14,108.”
Weinzimer says that each
agency approached the race
differently. Key West, though it is a
smaller community, did really well
because it had such a tight-knit group
of riders. They worked closely with
the media and ran training programs.
All their riders wore a team shirt while
training, and they did joint
fundraising. They also rented a van
collectively to help their group.
“I would say 95 percent of Key
West’s riders gave 100 percent of their
money to AIDS Help,” Weinzimer said.
“Orlando did really well, but it is a pediatric
AIDS charity. And there are some people that
just wanted to see that the kids are taken
care of, so they geared their money just to
them. Which is nice because it shows a cross
section of riders.”
By working as a grass roots effort
entirely supported by non-paid volunteers,
the ride proved it could get funds to the
selected organizations. It was quite a
Representatives from six Florida AIDS service organizations — AIDS Help, Inc., Broward
House, Florida AIDS Action Foundation, Hug Me, Sarasota CCC and South Beach AIDS Project
— display a ceremonial check showing the money raised from the Bike It and B.E.A.R. It for
AIDS Ride Friday, Jan. 23, at the Schubert Resort in Fort Lauderdale.
different story with the last ride, which took
place a year and a half ago. That ride actually
lost money and the organizations did not
receive a dime. The organizers had
anticipated 500 riders attending, but only 78
showed up. With expenses going towards
advertising, paid employees, and food and
supplies purchased for 500 riders, there were
no funds left. Other previous rides had made
money but were produced by special events
companies that took a large fee, leaving less
than $10,000 for each charity.
This past year 100 percent of the money
went to the charities.
The ride will take place again in
November 2004, but under the name The
Southernmost AIDS Bike Ride. Weinzimer
says the name change promotes the
destination a little more, and he believes it
will help attract more out-of-state riders. The
tagline for the event will be “Ride to
Paradise.”
center in West Palm
Beach and United
Foundation for AIDS
in Miami. All funds
raised at this event will be used to provide
services for people living with HIV/AIDS in
South Florida.
This year marks the first time that
“Dining Out for Life” will be held in South
Florida. The fund-raiser was founded in 1991
in Philadelphia. Since its inception, the event
has grown into an international fund-raiser
with more than 25 AIDS Service Organizations
around the nation collaborating with
restaurants and sponsors to raise much
needed funds for HIV/AIDS care. Major cities
like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle,
Minneapolis, Buffalo and Dallas host the
event.
Attendees simply eat out at their favorite
lunch or dinner location. The participating
restaurants donate 25 percent of the day’s
proceeds to the AIDS service organizations.
Ambassadors will be on hand at each
restaurant to answer any questions patrons
might have regarding the
benefiting agencies and
the services they offer. The
participating restaurants
are located in Palm Beach,
Boca Raton, Fort
Lauderdale, Hollywood
and Miami.
“The restaurants
were very willing and very
eager to join,” said Debi
Dance of AIDS Project
Florida. “Eighty-three
restaurants for the first
year is phenomenal.”
“When I was approached to participate
in the event, I said yes right away,” said Per
Jacobson, owner of Vienna Café & Wine Bar
in Fort Lauderdale. “It is a good cause, and
because it is the first year, it as an exciting
event to be a part of.”
“We were approached by The New
Times,” said Chuck Smith, owner of The Hi-
Life Café in Fort Lauderdale. “I heard about
this event being done in other cities, and I
think it is a terrific idea because it is a winwin
situation for everybody. It’s a painless
way to give cash, and it gives us nice
marketing and advertising while at the same
time it’s an opportunity to give back to the
community. I’ve gotten a lot of reservations
from it because customers feel like they are
able to donate money without spending extra
cash.”
Besides proceeds from meal sales, the
event will also raise money from a raffle.
When restaurant patrons are presented with
their bill, they will receive a raffle envelope
to fill out. Donations aren’t required to
participate in the raffle, but they are
encouraged. The prize for the raffle is a
Marriot Harbor Beach weekend package.
Participating restaurants run the gamut
of South Florida dining experiences. “One of
the exciting things about ‘Dining Out for Life’
is that we have a wide variety of restaurants
as far as prices are concerned,” Dance said.
“So it allows our client base to also
participate, which is wonderful.”
Divas dazzle ‘big wigs’ of West Palm gay scene
Performance at new 2730 club raises money for Compass community center
By J. Michael Woods
Palm Beach Correspondent
Travel to Hollywood and you are likely
to see some star-studded performances.
Whitney, Mariah and Aretha are true crowd
pleasers always guaranteed to give a great
— if not unpredictable — performance. The
good news is that you don’t have to travel
to the Hollywood Bowl or for that matter to
tinsel town to see the performance of a diva.
On Friday, Jan. 23, the Divas came to a
local stage for a memorable performance. The
venue was the newly opened 2730 club in
West Palm Beach. The Divas — Miss Peg,
Madame Rose, Edie, Evie, Nickie Norton and
Savannah — came prepared to give a show
that none will soon forget. Replete with handmade
costumes, these “ladies of the stage”
were ready to do what they do best — raise
money.
Long before the curtain opened at 2730,
these performers — all business
professionals in the local community — were
prepping and primping to raise money for
yet another gay and lesbian organization. It
had been several months since anyone had
viewed their Tea Dance Performance at Club
Kashmir. Their last event was to support the
local AIDS Walk. The Jan. 23 event benefited
Compass, Palm Beach County’s gay and
lesbian community center.
Carlos Garcia, one of the club’s owners,
wanted to support Compass’s PrideFest. He
also heard of the talented Divas and wanted
them to perform at his club. With a few calls
to the community center and the “girls”
The Divas pictured with Scott Fox, development coordinator for Compass; Clarence
Brooks, president of Compass’s board of trustees; and Betsy Becker
network of friends and fans, the deal was
done. The Divas were booked for the “Big
Wig Dress Up Party.”
In their previous performances, this
highly talented group have collaborated on
both ensemble and individual numbers to
meet the needs of their demanding fans.
While they have traveled throughout South
Florida raising money, the Compass event
was the first time they performed at 2730 club.
Formerly the “El Cid Bar” and also referred
to as “Le Cabaret Martini Video Bar,” 2730
has years of history and is uniquely located
in the heart of West Palm Beach’s historic
district. The owners have carefully decorated
the club to reflect its affluent surroundings.
From crushed velvet curtains and comfortable
seating arrangements to tasteful works of art
and sculptures that adorn the walls, 2730’s
spacious layout provides a welcome
alternative to the raucous downtown club
district. The term “bar” is perhaps deceiving;
this entertainment venue is divided into four
different meeting areas: the main bar, the
dance floor, a movie room and a rear seating
area.
In the second of a series of fund-raising
events held at 2730, the Divas took control
of the movie room stage shortly after 10 p.m.
The opening number, a classic from the
Divinyls, brought the crowd to its feet.
Shortly into the performance, Savannah
showed the true range and talent of the Divas.
Her performance of Cher’s “Turn Back Time”
moved everyone from the main room and
onto the dance floor.
There would be no cat fights backstage.
After all, this was a benefit; every diva would
get her time on stage. To prove their
solidarity, several of the Divas paired up for
both duets (including the show tune
“Sisters”) and group performances. Perhaps
the most popular number was from the movie
“Grease.” “You’re the One That I Want”
served as a theme to the night’s event.
A backstage interview revealed that it
won’t be long before this talented group
next takes the stage. A third fund-raising
event to commemorate Mardi Gras has
been scheduled for Friday, Feb. 20. 2730 is
located at 2730 South Dixie Hwy. (a quarter
mile south of Belvedere Road directly
across from the Palm Beach Post building).
A memorable memorial service
Friends gather at Jade Lounge in honor of Pagan “Sexilia” Rivera
By Andy Zeffer
Features Editor
On Sunday, Jan. 25, a large crowd
gathered at Jade Lounge in Miami Beach to
raise funds to pay for the funeral expenses
of Reynaldo Pagan “Sexilia” Rivera. Any
leftover money will be donated to AIDS
charities.
Rivera passed away on Jan. 14 from
AIDS-related complications. The popular
drag queen had entertained crowds since the
early days of South Beach’s gay scene until
his death.
Volunteers set up a shrine of glossy
pictures that captured Rivera’s theatrical flair
inside the club, which was aglow with 300
candles. A number of South Florida’s bestknown
drag queens performed on stage in
front of a large portrait of their contemporary.
Donations were taken at the door, and a gift
basket valued at $1,000 was raffled off. At
the end of the evening, everyone in the crowd
held a candle and led a procession to the
wharf a few blocks away from the club, where
Rivera’s ashes were scattered in the waters
off the city that he loved and came to know
as home. Sobs could be heard, and a brief
fireworks display brought the memorial to a
close.
As his drag persona Sexilia, Rivera was
known for his razor sharp wit and great comic
timing. For over a year he hosted karaoke
nights at Twist, and was also a host at the
club Liquid during its heyday.
“She was charged up, over the top and
full of energy, but very specific,” said Richard
Jay-Alexander, the well-known South Beach
Drag performer Adora and events planner
Mark Stevens at the memorial fund-raiser
for Pagan “Sexilia” Rivera at Jade Lounge
in Miami Beach Sunday, Jan. 25
producer who has just finished directing
Bette Midler’s current tour.
Jay-Alexander directed Rivera and some
fellow drag queens in a rendition of “Hey
Big Spender” from the Broadway show
“Sweet Charity.” The gig was for the Bulgari
spring jewelry show, and the press went crazy
for it. “Of all the drag queens and performers,
Sexilia was very unique. I mean they are all
unique, but she was so ’60s and emanated
the ’60s. And she looked real.”
Dixon Miller was a neighbor and close
friend of Riviera. The two had known each
other since 1999, and lived right down the
street from each other on Jefferson Avenue.
He describes Rivera as very generous, and
never expecting anything back in return.
When Miller had a back injury and couldn’t
move, Rivera did his shopping, laundry and
prepared his meals. Little did Miller know that
he would be caring for Rivera one year later.
“Would he be surprised at tonight?
Yes.” Miller said. “Would he be pleased?
Extremely. The fact we are going to raise
money to go beyond the expenses related to
his funeral so that money can go on to help
the people that are in his shoes in the future
makes all of this essential and acceptable.”
As an intensive care nurse, Miller was
working at the same hospital Rivera spent
his final days at, Mount Sinai.
“He was in no pain in his final moments,”
Miller said. “I had him on a diprivan drip. I
never cared for him directly, because that
would be ethically incorrect. But I made it
known to the nurses on his floor that if he
ever so much as sneezes you give me a call.”
South Beach events planner Mark
Stevens put together the enormous gift
basket raffled off to help bring in funds. CDs
from the Pride Factory, T-shirts from Zoo-14
and expensive liquor filled the large mound
of cellophane. Ian Schrager, the one-time coowner
of legendary New York nightclub
Studio 54, also leant a hand.
“I put it together in one day,” Stevens
said. “A lot of local businesses I work with
on a regular basis contributed. Eden Roc gave
us a weekend for two worth $700. I donated a
lot of liquor, and Ian Schrager gave us some
Dom Perignon.”
“She would have had a great time being
here,” said Miss Amy Rivers, one of Rivera’s
fellow drag performers who collected
donations at the front door. “Spiritually, she
is here with us. What she would have wanted
is for us to be happy for her. She is in a better
place in heaven, and would be very happy
having us celebrating her life. That is the
way she would have wanted it.”
Friends of Rivera turned to promoter
Edison Farrow to help raise funds to cover
funeral costs. Farrow, who puts on the Friday
night Euphoria parties at Jade Lounge, was
the mastermind behind the fund-raiser.
Farrow fronted $795 for funeral costs, and
then put out word of the memorial on his
expansive e-mail database. Within no time
members of the community came together to
lend a hand. Jojo Infinity volunteered to play
music for the evening. Pistols and Petals
flower shop on Alton Road donated four
enormous arrangements of white roses, which
were Rivera’s favorite, and the flower petals
that attendees tossed into the water at the
end of the evening. A slew of drag queens
performed, including Ebonee Excell, China
Girl and Tiffany Arieagus. Adora had the large
duty of emceeing the night, and led the
procession to the harbor where the ashes
were scattered.
The fund-raiser brought in a total of
$5,793. One thousand dollars each will go to
Care Resource, South Beach AIDS project,
United Foundation for AIDS and Prideline
Youth Services. The remaining money will
FAITH-BASED from Front Page
hiring. We’re the ones who will be kicked
out of the soup kitchen.”
Bush’s faith-based initiative would allow
federal funding of religious groups that offer
community services if they meet certain legal
requirements. Mike Haley, who heads Focus
on the Family’s “ex-gay” ministry, was one
of the witnesses who testified at a
subcommittee hearing on faith-based
programs in Colorado Springs. Five of the 10
Republican witnesses on the panel were from
Focus on the Family, whose president, James
Dobson, has been very outspoken in
opposing gay rights efforts.
“If the subcommittee wants to see a true
portrait of Focus on the Family’s failed ex-gay
program, I will be glad to provide a picture of
ex-gay leader John Paulk running away from a
gay bar,” Besen said. “Double lives and ruined
lives are the real picture of these groups that
Focus on the Family won’t show the
subcommittee.”
Haley, who was involved in Focus on the
Family’s ex-gay conference “Love Won Out,”
said Congressman Mark Souder (R-Ind.) asked
him and other members of his group to
participate in the subcommittee panel. “We
were asked to talk about faith-based programs,”
Haley said. “He asked us because we are one
of the largest Christian ministries in the world.
We testified about what Focus on the Family
offers the community.”
Haley insisted that Focus on the Family
is not interested in receiving federal funds for
its ex-gay ministry nor for any of its other
programs. “Focus on the Family has never
taken federal funds, nor do we wish to do so
because with federal funds there are always
strings attached,” Haley said. “We would never
be able to maintain our Christian standards.
I’m on the board of Exodus, and we would
never take federal funding. I can’t name any
ex-gay group that would want to take federal
funding.”
But Besen questioned why Haley and the
other Focus on the Family members were
invited to testify at a hearing on a federally
funded program. He described Bush’s faithbased
initiative as a “scam” and suggested
that the country may be headed down a
slippery slope toward “having taxpayers,
including gay people, pay for ex-gay therapy.”
Besen doesn’t think taxpayers should
have to foot the bill for a faith-based prison
either. The nation’s first faith-based prison,
the Lawtey Correctional Institution, opened
Dec. 24 in Bradford County, Fla. The facility
offers Bible studies, choir practice and
religious counseling. Participation in the
activities is voluntary, and inmates are free
to transfer out of the prison.
According to the Associated Press, at
the opening ceremony, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush
told inmates, “I can’t think of a better place
to reflect on the awesome love of our Lord
Jesus than to be here at Lawtey Correctional.
God bless you.”
Besen suggested that the governor’s
remarks make it clear which faith the prison is
based upon. “They say it represents 26 faiths,
but the vast majority of the people are going
to be fundamentalist Christians,” Besen said.
“And imagine being a gay prisoner in this new
faith-based prison. If you transfer out, it will
be frowned upon. It’s a recipe for a lot of
intimidation. It also brings up the question of
parole boards. I think people are going to
spend more time in jail because they don’t
subscribe to the state religion.”
The Express contacted the White House
Office of Faith-Based and Community
Initiatives and asked if ex-gay ministries
could be considered for federal funding
under the president’s program. Katherine
Ryan, media spokesperson for the faithbased
office, promised to call back with an
answer to the question, but as of press time
she had not called back, even though she
had two full days to respond.
In a statement posted on the White House
Web site, Jim Towey, director of the White
House Office of Faith-Based and Community
Initiatives, writes, “[The president] firmly
believes that these organizations have an
essential role to play in combating poverty
and lessening suffering…. They improve
communities.” But the statement does not
address the separation of church and state
issue. In fact, the phrase “church and state”
never appears in the 450-word message, which
reads like a mission statement. The issue is
also not mentioned in a link that provides an
overview of the program. Towey does
mentioned that there are “do’s and don’ts” of
applying for a federal grant under the program.
He also refers to “complicated rules and
regulations that hinder these groups from
competing for federal funds on an equal footing
with other, larger charities.”
Besen thinks the mainstream media has
not focused enough attention on Bush’s
faith-based program and other attempts to
chip away at the wall separating church and
state. “They don’t grasp what these people
are trying to do,” Besen said. “These people
want to destroy the separation of church and
state. This faith-based initiative is the first
step at sliding through the back door to do
that. If we don’t stop it now and make these
things a priority, the next thing you know
these things will be funded.”
Besen also criticized gay organizations
for being complacent about the issue. “Gay
organizations are not speaking out strongly
against faith-based initiatives because they
don’t want to be labeled as anti-religious,”
Besen said. “They rationalize it by saying
MCC can receive funds. But the people who
control religion in America are anti-gay. Gay
organizations need to take the lead.”
A president with a proud past
New Stonewall Library head co-authored 1977 Dade Ordinance
By Andy Zeffer
Features Editor
The election of Melodie Moorehead as
president of the Stonewall Library &
Archives brings a bit of living history to a
facility that has become the cultural center
of Fort Lauderdale. Twenty seven years ago,
Moorehead co-authored the gay rights
ordinance in Miami that Anita Bryant
opposed.
“I debated Anita Bryant back in 1978,”
recalls Moorehead, who is now a licensed
psychologist. “We had collected the 18,000
signatures to put the issue of gay rights on
the ballot for the first time back in Dade
County.”
Moorehead was studying psychology
at the time, and says she participated in the
ordinance effort as a preventative mental
health measure. She was working with the
gay and lesbian community and wanted to
do something about the homophobia that
she saw all around her.
Pop singer and Christian conservative
Bryant succeeded in repealing the civil rights
ordinance for gays in Dade County. Bryant’s
“Save the Children” campaign is largely
credited for giving birth to the modern day
religious right as well as spearheading the
gay rights movement.
The gay rights ordinance in Dade
County was eventually reinstated in 1999.
Bryant has long since faded into obscurity.
After the ordinance was repealed, she lost
her lucrative job as spokesperson for the
Florida Citrus Commission when activists
launched a successful boycott of Florida
citrus products.
“I had contact with Bryant on the night
of the debate,” Moorehead said. “She was a
very beautiful woman and had a lovely voice,
but she was very limited with her prejudice
and discrimination. Then I had contact with
her again through the God and Country rally
she did with Jerry Falwell in 1978. I had been
invited to that rally with Doctor Alan
Rockway, who is now deceased of AIDS, and
Robert Kuntz.” Rockway and Kuntz were also
co-authors of the 1977 gay rights ordinance.
Moorehead says her history in the local
gay rights movement was one reason why
she was asked to head Stonewall Library. She
says taking the position honors the memories
of some of her activist friends of the past,
like Dr. Rockway.
As Stonewall president, she takes over
the helm of an organization that has become
a vibrant cultural force in the local community.
“I am extremely proud and very much looking
forward to working with the fine men and
women that are on the board and interfacing
with the community,” Moorehead says.
Moorehead says that the primary
mission of the library is to preserve the history
of the gay community and make it accessible
to the community. As for the sale of the Gay
& Lesbian Community Center, where the
library currently rents space, Moorehead
says it offers an opportunity for change.
“There are many things that are
happening that are going to require the
Stonewall Library & Achieves to be more
independent and develop more of an
identity,” Moorehead says. “We are hoping
to do it as we make this relocation. We have
a wonderful committee set up now that’s
being shared by good people such as Vice
President Jack Latona, who will be getting
feedback to me from the committee as to what
our options are going to be and what
direction we should take.” She says the
library’s membership will be included in
planning for the future.
Moorehead is also excited about the
library expanding its vision by signing a
contract with the U.S. Holocaust Museum.
Stonewall will bring a traveling exhibition to
South Florida in 2005 on the Nazi regime’s
persecution of gay people. The exhibit will
be housed at the Broward County Library.
“We will be the only people in the state
that will offer this,” Moorehead says. “In this
SEXILIA from page 11
Dr. Melodie Moorehead, the new
president of Stonewall Library &
Archives, led the fight against Anita
Bryant in the 1970s.
way we hope to bring about the awareness
of the impact of the persecution of gays and
lesbians, and also to help people learn about
the Stonewall Library.”
go toward the funeral costs and to help out Rivera’s roommate, who was left with a
handful of bills.
Rivera originally hailed from Puerto Rico. He had been out of touch with his family
for many years. The week he passed away, his brother Edgardo flew to Miami. A fax
had to be sent to Rivera’s parents in Puerto Rico and signed in front of a notary and
faxed back in order for Rivera to be cremated. According to Farrow, Rivera’s parents
did not come to Miami themselves due to lack of funds. Though his brother was
unable to attend the benefit, he was very appreciative that the community was coming
together to take care of arrangements.
In the end, the community that Rivera lived and worked in for so many years came
together to pay homage to one of their own. The evening proved that someone with an
unconventional life and offbeat path had a unique family and a support system of his
own.
Republicans should end military ban
If they don’t, Bush could lose the 1 million gay votes he got in 2000
By Ken Sain
Exit polling from the 2000 general election
tells us 1 million gay men and lesbians voted
for President Bush, and he still lost the
popular vote by a half million. The 2004
election may well be decided more by external
factors, but the election will likely be
agonizingly close.
Three-plus years of the “Great Uniter”
dividing people will do that for a nation.
The Republican Party has an image
problem with gays, which seems strange,
since George W. Bush is the most gayfriendly
Republican president ever. He has
appointed a gay ambassador, and there are
high-ranking gays in the White House and
on his campaign staff. The president talks
about tolerance even while he’s trying to
deny rights and perpetuate the second-class
citizenship that we experience today.
The White House and Republicans in
Congress should take the lead this year to
end the ban against gay men and lesbians
serving openly in the military. It would be a
major political coup and the benefits of such
leadership would more than make up for any
backlash from their base supporters.
Such a move would demonstrate that
the Bush administration and Republicans are
not waging their own private jihad against
gay Americans, which would appeal to
moderates who are uncomfortable with the
current religious right rhetoric on marriage.
Republicans can do this now because:
• The Lawrence vs. Texas Supreme Court
decision removed the last legal justification
for denying gay men and lesbians the right
to serve openly by stating our sexual
orientation can no longer be deemed illegal.
• A December 2003 CNN/USA Today/
Gallup poll found that 79 percent of
Americans believe gays should be able to
serve openly. The American public is ready
for the change.
• Study after study of militaries where
gays do serve openly shows there is no loss
of effectiveness after the change in policy.
There are only two nations in NATO that do
not allow gays to serve openly — the U.S.
and Turkey. Do we want to be the last of our
allies to make this change?
• U.S. military forces have served in joint
assignments with soldiers from other nations,
where gays do serve openly, like Britain and
Canada. There have been no reported
problems.
• Republicans have the power. They can
steal another Democratic issue and make it
their own. The ban will be lifted eventually.
The only question is, who will get the credit
for it?
Think about that. The Democratic Party
will be remembered for both “Don’t Ask,
Don’t Tell” and the Defense of Marriage Act
because President Clinton signed them into
law, and many congressional Democrats
couldn’t wait to jump into bed with
Republicans on those issues.
It would be President Bush and the
Republicans who would be remembered for
ending the military ban. There hasn’t been a
civil rights legacy like that in the Republican
Party since the end of slavery.
There would be some cost, of course.
Tony Perkins and Gary Bauer and other
“family” activists will be screaming that they
have been betrayed by the Republican Party.
The social conservative base will make lots
of noise about staying home on Election Day.
Some might even follow through on that
threat, but that is unlikely. Gay marriage will
continue to be a hot-button issue all year
and as long as Republicans in Congress are
pushing for a constitutional amendment to
discriminate against gay couples, the social
conservative base will turn out to support
Republicans. The threats will be empty.
Hand someone a bandage while you’re
bashing them over the head with a hammer.
At one time, this was the fine art of
compromise.
And as Republicans prepare to end the
ban, they can frame their argument for what
it really is: A national security issue. It is in
the vital interest of our national security that
we allow gays to serve openly. In a time of
war, can our military really afford to be without
those 10,000 soldiers who have been
discharged since “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”
began?
When we are struggling to win the hearts
and minds of Iraqis and are in a desperate
need of Arabic translators, can our nation
afford to be without the more than 30 gay
linguists who were discharged, many of
whom spoke Arabic?
The United States military is actually less
effective because of this ban. That argument,
and the ridiculous crusade for a
constitutional amendment to discriminate
against gay couples, should be enough to
placate the “family” groups.
With the political arguments for ending
the ban behind me, I can return to my idealistic
roots. Ending the military ban is simply the
right thing to do. Gay men and lesbians have
always served in our nation’s military, even
at the highest levels, as the recent coming
out of Brig. Gen. Keith Kerr, Brig. Gen. Virgil
Richard and Rear Adm. Alan Steinman
shows.
How can we talk about honesty and
serving proudly on one hand, and insist on
dishonesty and shame on the other? The
policy forces our soldiers, sailors and pilots
to be hypocrites. Is this how we honor those
who would risk their lives for this country,
by demanding they hide in the shadows?
There is no legitimate reason to deny
gay service members the right to live openly
as they serve the country they love. It makes
sense politically. The nation is divided, and
yet nearly eight of 10 people believe the time
has come to end the ban. The other 20 percent
will never alter their views.
It is time for the White House and
Republicans in Congress to show true
leadership and compassion and give one
Bush thinks he’s above accountability
In light of the story in the Jan. 26 edition of The Express, I thought you would
find the following quote from President Bush interesting: Bush to National Security
Council: “I’m the commander, see — I do not need to explain why I say things.
That’s the interesting thing about being the President — [I] don’t feel like I owe
anybody an explanation.”
Now if that doesn’t make you shudder. We have to get unBushed or we will
continue to be Bush-wacked.
GLCC sale is a bad deal for the community
Many people will continue to debate the Gay & Lesbian Community Center
(GLCC) sale on the issues of how the deal was done, etc. I want to address the deal
itself. The picture in your article showed a really ugly structure that’s inappropriate
for the location.
Are we really expected to believe Tarragon Realty when they claim to have no
interest in the surrounding properties? It’s more plausible that the gay bars there
and their buildings will be gone as soon as they can make another secret agreement
to bring in a Starbucks and other more “acceptable” businesses in Tarragon’s
grand scheme of “improving the area.” And GLCC ought to get their lawyers ready
for when Tarragon comes back to them and says they have to change the new
GLCC because there is really not enough room on the site.
It has always been my experience that developers are inherently dishonest.
Deep down, was the confidentiality thing really plausible? I don’t think so. And
who else finds Tarragon’s proposal to take over gay community centers all over
the country and replace them with luxury condos really frightening? Is that what
our community wants to stand for?
Finally, as the sale price was obviously deflated, let’s hold out for a threestory
new GLCC — more space. After all, how expensive can another truckload of
cinder blocks be to a company that will be making $20 million off their sales.
A gay dad is sent to jail
Tenn. resident charged for answering son’s question about homosexuality
Tennessee resident Joe Hogue thought
he was being a good father by answering his
9-year-old son’s questions about
homosexuality, something his
father knows about firsthand.
But Hogue’s honesty with
his son got him put in jail, then
got him rebuked by an appeals
court that essentially ordered him
to act straight and not “subject”
his son to the “gay lifestyle.”
Hogue, a producer in the
Christian music industry, and his
wife, Cher, divorced in February
2002, and Hogue went on to lead
his life as a gay man. Though
Hogue got partial custody rights to his son,
part of the divorce decree prohibited Hogue
from “taking the child around or otherwise
exposing the child to his gay lover(s) and/or
his gay lifestyle.”
According to a complaint filed by his
ex-wife, Hogue allowed his son to be with
his lover in their home, and (ironically) at
church.
But what really got the ex-wife all riled
was when Hogue apparently told his son
outright that he is gay.
“When someone is gay, they are born
like that,” he told his little boy, as part of his
explanation of being gay. The outraged
mother complained about her ex-husband’s
honesty, claiming that he was violating the
court order to “shield” the little boy from the
“homosexual lifestyle.”
God forbid the little kid learn honesty
and integrity and tolerance from his gay dad.
Much better to follow the lead of the
vindictive mother, and learn bigotry, denial,
vengeance and homophobia.
At least one court in
Tennessee agreed. It found
Hogue guilty of violating the
divorce agreement, and sent him
to jail for two days.
Luckily, an appeals court
disagreed at least with
the part of the argument
that landed Hogue in
prison.
“We do not read the
restraining order to
prohibit a statement by the father that
he is gay,” an appeals court judge
wrote. “Thus, [Mr. Hogue] did not
have notice that he was prohibited
from telling his son he was gay and
therefore cannot be held in contempt
for doing so.”
Sadly, however, the appeals court found
nothing wrong with the lower court order
requiring that the little boy not be “exposed”
to Mr. Hogue’s “gay lifestyle.”
I always wonder what these kind of
people mean when they say things like that.
What — they don’t want the son to have
good taste in clothes or be able to pick out
nice antiques or to arrange flowers? Or maybe
they don’t want the son to learn about selfrespect,
or love, or civil rights? Hard to know
which bothers them more.
Hogue told his son he was gay because
his son was asking questions — as kids that
age are apt to do. Hogue became concerned
when his son confided in him that others
were gossiping. Worse, the child was being
told that his father’s soul was going to be
damned in hell for being gay.
The rightfully alarmed gay dad wanted
to clear it up with his son, to let his son know
that he was a good Christian, and that he did
not believe he was going to hell for being
gay.
A Tennessee judge
threw Joe Hogue in jail
for telling his son that
being gay didn’t mean
he’d be damned to hell.
I often hear critics — even gay and
lesbian parents — say that kids shouldn’t
be told about homosexuality when they are
“too young.”
But unlike homosexuality, homophobia
and prejudice and bigotry are not inherent
traits and characteristics with which people
are born. Those ugly attributes are totally
man-made and learned.
People who say we shouldn’t talk to kids
about homosexuality until they are “old
enough to know about it,” are really saying
we should just wait until kids are already
brainwashed by society to hate gay people,
and then, when damage is already well set in,
we should try to do a meager job of reversing
it.
To most kids, being gay or lesbian is
initially a neutral point. It becomes an issue
when they pick up on societal clues around
them that this is somehow bad or wrong or
dirty.
Anyone who thinks that pre-teen kids
are “too young” to know about gay people
has never been to a local playground
or in a contemporary school, where the
words “fag” and “gay” are used
incessantly. And not in a good way.
The question isn’t whether or not
kids should learn about what it means
to be gay. They’re going to get
information about it one way or the
other.
The question is what they hear,
how they hear it, and who they hear it
from.
For Hogue, the issue was being honest
with his son, letting his son know who he
really is, and trying to educate his son
differently from the intolerant viewpoints he
was otherwise getting — the only
viewpoints the little boy apparently was
getting.
Hogue did a brave and courageous thing
as a gay man. More importantly, he did the
right thing as a good father.
Treating HIV as a crime
In Florida, failing to disclose status before having sex is felony
HIV Disclosure is the silent volcano
among gay men. Hardly anybody hears
rumbling debates about the issue, but fiery
emotions brew just below the
surface.
A reader’s recent e-mail
reflects a common viewpoint: “I
am completely appalled by the
lack of respect for human life of
some HIV-positive people. I know
that it is my responsibility to
protect myself. But I also feel
very strongly that if you have
HIV, you have a moral obligation
to inform anyone who stands the
risk of contracting the virus from
you. … I believe that if you
knowingly infect someone with the HIV virus,
it’s murder.”
Another writer challenged that
expectation, recommending guys adopt a
“buyer beware” attitude: “You say that
‘disclosure should be the expected norm.’
Ha! Do you always believe what someone
tells you?”
What keeps us from descending into that
sort of cynicism, always suspecting our lovers
are liars?
Many gay men look to the law to protect
them. They assume that the threat of
punishment will motivate any HIV-infected
sex partners to answer honestly when asked
their status.
But the law is a clumsy instrument to
regulate romantic affairs. I always point out
that “no court has ever overturned an HIV
infection.” Winning a judgment against a
person who infected you may be small solace
for the person who faces a lifetime of
treatment anxiety, and possibly
acquired treatment resistance.
The justice system
may not be well equipped
to negotiate our
community’s conflicted
beliefs about HIV status
disclosure. Still, threedozen
states have passed
some sort of laws, and not
all are codicils of rationale
legislation.
Just last month in
California, San Francisco
Superior Court Judge Kay Tsenin
tossed out the case against Ronald
Gene Hill, accused of repeatedly
denying his HIV infection to sex
partners, at least two of whom he
subsequently infected.
The charges against Hill were not
dropped because these claims were proven
untrue. They were dropped because
California’s ludicrous law does not criminalize
willfully deceiving sex partners about HIV
status.
The standard for criminal behavior
under the California HIV disclosure law
requires that the positive defendant must
have acted with the “specific intent” of
infecting the other person. Merely lying to
get your rocks off, with willful disregard of
the risks to your partner, is not considered a
criminal act in California. Seriously.
If California’s law is overly narrow and
lenient, Florida’s law is overly broad and
punitive. A person diagnosed with HIV in
Florida is guilty of a felony if he or she ever
Poz men could be
sent to prison for
failing to disclose
their HIV status
before sex. Is this
any way to regulate
our relationships?
has sex with another person without first
disclosing HIV status. Using condoms
doesn’t excuse someone legally from not
disclosing.
In a long-term relationship, we may
question the morality of hiding HIV infection
whether condoms are used or not. But early
in a relationship, or in a casual sex encounter,
a person who uses condoms has certainly
fulfilled a reasonable obligation to protect a
partner.
Some may say that allowing condoms
to replace disclosure is too permissive. Why
shouldn’t HIV-positive people always be
“forced” to disclose their status? Because
that requirement makes it less likely that
people will take an HIV test in the first place.
Many who suspect they are
infected will choose not to confirm
their suspicions, as this knowledge
would make them vulnerable to
prosecution if they ever blundered
into impulsive sex with a stranger to
whom they didn’t want to disclose
their status. Protection without
disclosure is preferable to denial and
possible non-protection.
HIV-positive gay men may also
doubt that the legal punishment will
follow non-disclosure, whereas the
risk of social excommunication
following disclosure is very real.
Even today, I see gay men point
out other men they believe to be
infected, and warn their friends to
“be careful, he’s not clean.” That
discriminatory language creates a hostile
environment for any who do want to protect
their partners through honest disclosure.
Legislators may not be able to manage
fair language, but we should be able to speak
to each other about HIV status honestly and
empathetically.
Pink Twins pursue the pot of corporate gold at the end of the rainbow. But mix
pleasure with your business so burning the midnight oil won’t seem so burdensome.
Your intuition will divine the underlying political rules. Change the rules when you
rule, you ruler you.
CANCER (JUNE 22 - JULY 23)
Four planets converge in Pisces this February and give you room to roam and
experience life at its fullest. Leave yourself open for adventure and romance as
Uranus applies the rocket surge. Is one of those delicious, short burst type of things??
LEO (JULY 24 - AUGUST 23)
Plan for a tropical thaw when Pisces turns up the sexual heat. How much can you
handle, lover Lion? Mars adds oomph to your corporate ascent after the 4th for those
royal beasts who ache for a merger and an acquisition. I see your stock is rising....
.
VIRGO (AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 23)
No queer Virgin should be sitting home alone. Pisces energy gives you clear sailing to
seek your shipmate or to navigate current relationships into deeper waters. Shower
them with valentine goodies. A set of keys to the weekend house couldn’t hurt either.
LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 24 - OCTOBER 23)
Planets in Pisces stir up your romantic instincts. Love is discovered at work or, even
better, at the gym (examine the merchandise before you buy...) Gay Libras should
hang around the water cooler to pick up idle gossip ... or is it an idle gossiper?
SCORPIO (OCTOBER 24 - NOVEMBER 22)
Gather your forces and become a social force with whom to be reckoned. Sparky
Uranus in Pisces provides boundless artistic inspiration but can also lead you
down the path to reckless dissipation and excess. Which path will you choose?
Oh let’s guess...
SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 23 - DECEMBER 22)
Gay Archers ache to seek stronger connections. And speaking of connections,
this is a good time to connect with family. Who knows what can happen when
the cards are laid on the table? You find a few pieces of trump after you lay
down your hand.
CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 23 - JANUARY 20)
Eloquence is your middle name as planets in Pisces turn on your charm. So why waste
this sweet diplomatic riff on sour complaints? You catch more valentines with honey
than with vinegar. Did I say honey? I meant champagne, roses and chocolates!
AQUARIUS (JANUARY 21 - FEBRUARY 19)
Aqueerians have a fiscal surprise up their sleeves. Generosity is key so check the
bottom line, loosen your purse strings a little and enjoy the valentine’s rush.
Mars empowers you to say what needs to be said after the 4th. So if you can’t talk
love, talk politics.
PISCES (FEBRUARY 20 - MARCH 20)
Guppies are busy bees whose presence seems to be demanded at every major social
event. Create a buzz. See and be seen. Mystical Piscean planets may also devise a new
“look” for you. The question is, what goes with pink spandex and suspenders?
