Miracle in Massachusetts!
Marriage Ruling Called ‘Beachhead’; Equality Florida to Launch PR Campaign
FACES OF VICTORY: Three of the seven gay couples who sued the state, from left to
Ed Balmelli and Michael Horgan, stand together Tuesday, Nov. 18, at a news conference
same-sex couples are legally entitled to wed under the state constitution. (AP Photo/
Following on the heels of last summer’s
landmark sodomy ruling, last week’s
Massachusetts court ruling in favor of samesex
marriage could be called “Gay
Independence Day II.”
Declaring that the state “failed to identify
any constitutionally adequate reason for
denying civil marriage to same-sex couples,”
the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court
ruled Nov. 18 in favor of seven same-sex
couples who were denied marriage licenses.
But those couples will not be walking down
the aisle just yet. In the case of Goodridge et
al v. Department of Public Health, the court
gave the Massachusetts legislature 180 days
to come up with a solution that recognizes the
rights of gays and lesbians to legally marry.
“Without a doubt, this is the happiest day
of our lives,” Gloria Bailey told the Associated
Press. Bailey and her partner of 32 years were
among the seven same-sex couples who sued
the state for the right to marry.
While some political pundits are
characterizing the 4-3 ruling as a gift to the
far right, local GLBT rights advocates are
hailing the decision as a major breakthrough
at a time when right-wing groups are
mobilizing their forces to use same-sex
marriage as a wedge issue in the 2004 election.
To counter a highly organized anti-gay
marriage effort, Equality Florida, a statewide
gay rights organization, plans to launch a
campaign to educate the public by collecting
the personal stories of gay families in Florida.
“People in this country will support us
more if they know us and they know our
families,” Stratton Pollitzer, South Florida
director for Equality Florida, told The
Express. “All the polling data show that
when people are close to someone who is
gay or lesbian, they are much more likely to
support our right to marry. It’s a call to action
to start telling the stories of our families to
our neighbors. We need to help everyone
understand that civil unions are about basic
rights—they’re about health insurance for
my husband, they’re about having your
partner recognized as next of kin when you
go to the hospital.”
Pollitzer said Equality Florida will play a
very active role in the gay marriage debate
during the upcoming election season.
“Marriage is a state government issue, and
as a state government advocacy group, we
see this as an issue that is very important to
speak up on,” he said. “People want to know
what they can do to advance this cause.
Equality Florida is going to launch a
campaign to collect our families’ stories here
in Florida.”
Meanwhile, activists are analyzing the
long-term ripple effects of the ruling. Local
attorney and openly gay Fort Lauderdale City
Commissioner Dean Trantalis described the
decision as a “beachhead” in the battle for
same-sex civil unions. “We will probably still
see the cultural tug-of-way,” Trantalis said.
“But I think in the end, this decision will
probably be seen as the first beachhead, and
Breakfast Over the Intracoastal
Business & Professional Group Has Offered Gay Networking for 30 Years
By Andy Zeffer
Features Editor
Every Thursday morning The
Business & Professional Group (BPG)
meets for their weekly breakfasts over the
glistening waters of the Intracoastal. The
BPG has been having their breakfasts at
the Double Tree Hotel for years now. The
weekly gatherings are an opportunity to
connect, make friends, spread the word
about one’s business as well as learn
about other businesses in the community.
The BPG was started 30 years ago as
a means for gay businesses to network
with each other and offer support and
growth. Members sip coffee and enjoy a
spread of breakfast foods while a different
member gives a presentation each week.
“The BPG has been in existence for
over 25 years” said Michael Leigh, the
group’s vice president of membership. “We
have all kinds of social events also, for
instance tomorrow night we are going to
Martini Cabaret. We had an open house
last week at my business so that members
can get together and meet each other on a
personal basis. The breakfast is one way
of doing it.”
Leigh goes on to describe the group as
a cross between social and business. There
is a large business card directory in the middle
of the room where members place their cards.
The group also hosts guest speakers that
come in and talk about various topics.
For BPG President Darcy J. Beeman, the
group has been nothing but a delight.
4 www.ExpressGayNews.com • November 24, 2003
Beeman, an investment representative with
Edward Jones, has been the president for 3½
years now.
“It’s a phenomenal group,” Beeman
says. “I’ve done a little bit of everything,
such as The Lauderdale Chamber, as well as
other groups. But this group has just become
the best for my business because it becomes
more of a family. It takes a little more time to
get involved; you just don’t pass around
your business card. It is more of a process to
get to know one another, and people do
presentations and talk about themselves. It
boosts their business.”
Beeman goes on to say that when you
get to know other members of the group, the
referrals come in. The members become very
loyal to one another and build a trust. Beeman
ventures to say that the group is a little more
social than business, but that at the same
time it has built her business more than
anything else she has tried.
The group allows up to six people in an
industry, so it gives people a choice of who
to work with. The only category that is closed
is the realtor category. Yet all the realtors in
The BPG help each other and support each
other’s business.
One of those realtors is Thom Carr of
Atlantic Properties International Inc. For Carr,
the group has meant much more to him than
just building his business. Carr met his
partner, Dr. J. Heider, at a Thursday morning
breakfast.
“We met 19 years ago one Thursday
morning,” Carr said. “We went out that Friday
and have been together ever since.”
During last week’s meeting, Denise
Luquer of Lauderdale Graphics spoke before
the group. Luquer has been with the group
for four months, and it was her turn at bat to
give a presentation about her business.
Luquer spoke about how her company
A Home for the Holidays
Chair of Broward House to Hold Benefit on New River
By Andy Zeffer
Features Editor
Everyone is invited to Susan Telli’s
home along the New River on the evening
of Tuesday, Dec. 16, when the chair of the
board of directors for Broward House
opens her doors for a cocktail reception
that is one of the highlights of the holiday
season. All proceeds from the event benefit
Broward House, a community-based
organization with several locations
throughout Broward County.
Broward House provides a full array
of services to those living with and at-risk
for HIV and other health issues. These
services require money, so when Susan
Telli saw the opportunity to raise funds by
opening her home a few years ago, she
began what has become a holiday tradition.
“The suggested donation is $25,” says
Dr. Keith L. Riddle, director of community
clients, and her presentation was a great
success. Members swarmed Luquer at the
end of the breakfast with more questions
about her services.
To find out more about The Business and
Professional Group call 954.524.5154 or
log on to www.bpgftl.com.
relations for Broward House. “It is not
required, but if folks make reservations, it
gives us a good idea of what to expect
beforehand.” Cocktails and hors
d’oeuvres will be served.
Riddle says that last year’s holiday
evening was a success, with over 100 folks
showing up. He hopes this year’s evening
will be even better, with Butlers Pantry
providing the catering.
The music last year was provided by
Suzy Q productions, and organizers are
looking to do the same this year, though it
has not been confirmed. What guests can
be sure of are raffle prizes, such as two
round-trip tickets on Spirit Airlines to any
of their destinations.
A Lot of Information and a Little NFL
Equal Access to the American Dream Comes to the GLCCSF
By Andy Zeffer
Features Editor
Esera Tuaolo, the former NFL player who
made headlines when he came out of the
closet last year, surprised his audience by
serenading them with a song last Thursday,
Nov. 20, at a gay rights forum presented by
the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) at the
Gay and Lesbian Community Center of South
Florida (GLCCSF).
The evening covered a range of issues
such as the fight for equality in marriage,
adopting and raising children, securing health
insurance and planning last wills and
testaments. The evening featured Sally
Green, associate field director for the HRC,
Timothy Mahoney, deputy director for
estate planning for the HRC, attorney Greg
Nevins of Lambda Legal and Tuaolo, who
besides being a former NFL player is also a
gay dad.
GLCCSF Executive Director Bill Peters
got the event started by introducing Tuaolo.
Peters joked about how he bonded with the
former NFL player because of their religious
backgrounds (Peters is the son of a preacher,
and Tuaolo’s family is Pentecostal). Peters
told the audience that both men had a “great
shout about how God is on our side.”
The former football player, who is also a
talented singer, sang a Sarah McLachlan
song with a powerful voice. Using the song
as an icebreaker, Tuaolo spoke about
confronting his family and friends about who
he really is, and how important it is for people
to step up to the plate and speak about gay
rights. Tuaolo captivated the audience with
stories about his youth in Hawaii, and how
he had to put who he was in the closet. He
spoke about the fear and anxiety he felt while
in the NFL, the homophobic locker room talk
he would overhear and how he dreaded being
discovered. An expressive and warm speaker,
a smile took over his face and his eyes lit up
when he spoke about his husband, Mitchell,
and their two adopted children. After telling
the audience how his work with the HRC was
important because it affects his family, he
handed things off to Sally Green.
Before starting her presentation, Green
mentioned that it was Transgender
Remembrance Day and asked for a moment
of silence to remember transgender victims
of hate crimes. The HRC came fully equipped
with a well-done slide show, and Green got
things off to a positive note by mentioning
strides that gays and lesbians have made in
just the past year. She listed gay marriage in
Canada, the sodomy laws being overturned,
and last week’s Massachusetts decision on
gay marriage as significant accomplishments.
But Green then spoke about the current
backlash, such as the proposed federal
amendment to ban gay marriage and bishops
speaking out against gay marriage. Green
spoke about why gay marriage was such an
important issue and how gay partners are
considered strangers under the law when it
comes to such issues as taxes, inheritance
and hospital visitation. She also said that
The HRC would be taking a fullpage
ad out in USA Today on the
gay marriage issue, and that the
audience should look out for it.
When Green was done,
Timothy Mahoney took over to
talk about what gays and lesbians
can do now about protecting
themselves with a living will and
last testament. Then Nevins of
Lambda Legal spoke about a range
of legal issues, including the recent
case in Palm Beach where he
represented a gay couple who were
denied housing. The couple won
their lawsuit, but only because of
the existing housing ordinance law
that protects gays and lesbians
from discrimination. Nevins
stressed the need for these laws,
which many counties in Florida and
most across the country do not have.
The evening ended with a lively question
and answer session. There was also a raffle
drawing in which $100 gift cards to Sears
were given out to members of the audience.
All the speakers stuck around to mingle with
attendees.
“The seminars are great. We are very
happy to be doing them,” Green said. “This
was number eight of 10. We have two more
to go, and they will be in January of next
year. The response has been overwhelming,
and we have seen a lot of people who are
coming. We are finding people have a hunger
Esera Tuaolo, former NFL player and openly gay
dad, speaks to gay parents at the GLCCSF
for knowledge of what their rights are, such
as how they can adopt children, write a will
together, medical power of attorney and how
they can be protected.”
“They approached me and told me about
this campaign they are doing around the
country talking to GLBT families and how
we can protect ourselves,” Tuaolo said about
his involvement with the forums. “So that’s
the reason I got involved, because I have a
important.”
Ron Williams, Gay Cartoonist
Drawings Added Humor, Poignancy to Community
By Norm Kent
Publisher
You have read it many times: A picture
is worth a thousand words. Ron Williams
exemplified that aphorism.
No one here at The Express knew Ron
Williams personally. We only knew him
through his pictures, his cartoons and his
satirical drawings, which captured gay life
as we live it today.
Ron died in Santa Fe, N.M., on July 25,
having lived his last few years with an
escalating case of HIV/AIDS. His cartoons
appeared regularly on the editorial pages
of our newspaper and those in the
Windows Media chain.
Of his life, let us say that he captured
our world, with humor, poignancy and
sorrow. His uplifting cartoons mastered the
emotions that surround our lives, the
politics that punctuate it and the
stereotypes that put humor in it. We salute
your work Ron, and wish your spirit well.
association with the NFL, but is trying to work with a few groups to get domestic
partnership rights introduced to the league. It is especially important to him because if
he passes away, Mitchell does not receive his benefits. When asked if he is aware of
any other openly gay players currently in the NFL, he says he never came across any
or knows of anyone.
“I guess I did a great job of acting straight,” Tuaolo said. “When David Kopay
(another openly gay former NFL player) came out with his book, it was fascinating
because he knew of other players who were gay and had relationships with other
players back in the ’70s. It seems now the NFL has taken a step back, and everything
has been brushed under the rug.
Tuaolo is working on a second album now, and says he has been singing since he
was 5. He does a lot of theater in Minneapolis, where he lives. And he is also going to
try his luck acting in Hollywood, where he has an agent and manager.
GAY MARRIAGE continued from front page
other states will follow in time.
“The language of the court provides
relief based on the need to spread equal
rights,” Trantalis continued. “The way the
court worded the ruling suggests that the
legislature must now look at ways to include
same-sex civil unions in its laws. It could lead
to a full-blown gay marriage law in
Massachusetts.”
Trantalis noted that the gay marriage
issue appeared to be following the same path
as other civil rights causes, including
African-American civil rights and, ironically,
divorce rights. “I remember the path that
divorce took,” Trantalis said, noting that
when Nevada became the first state to pass
a “no-fault” divorce law, it set off a chain
reaction in other states. No-fault divorce
allows couples to dissolve marriages without
showing cause or residency in cases where
there are no children or money issues
involved. “In time, most of the other states
came around and accepted this as a need
that the American society demanded,”
Trantalis said.
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC),
the nation’s largest gay and lesbian rights
organization, praised the decision as a victory
for basic civil rights and legal protections for
gay and lesbian couples. HRC noted that the
ruling will have no bearing on religious
institutions’ policies on marriage.
“Today, the Massachusetts Supreme
12 www.ExpressGayNews.com • November 24, 2003
Court made history,” declared
Elizabeth Birch, executive director
of HRC. “This ruling will never
interfere with the right of religious
institutions—churches,
synagogues and mosques—to
determine who will be married
within the context of their
respective religious faiths. This is
about whether gay and lesbian
couples in long-term, committed
relationships will be afforded the
benefits, rights and protections
afforded other citizens to best care for their
partners and children.
“A civil marriage license unlocks the door
to hundreds of rights, responsibilities and
protections under state law,” Birch added.
“This ruling simply means that devoted
couples in Massachusetts will no longer
have to worry about being denied the
ability to visit each other in the hospital,
or the ability to make medical decisions
for their beloved.”
Besides hundreds of rights and
benefits under state law, the ruling would
also extend more than 1,000 federal
protections and responsibilities to same-sex
couples. But the Defense of Marriage Act
(DOMA) effectively bars the federal
government from recognizing same-sex
unions by defining marriage as “a union
between one man and one woman as
file photo
husband and wife.”
Birch noted, however, that “because no
state has recognized civil marriage for samesex
couples in the past, this law has not yet
been challenged in the court.”
In the ruling, Massachusetts Chief
Justice Margaret Marshall wrote: “Marriage
is a vital social institution. The exclusive
commitment of two individuals to each other
nurtures love and mutual support. It brings
stability to our society. For those who
choose to marry, and for their children,
marriage provides an abundance of legal,
financial and social benefits. In return, it
imposes weighty legal, financial, and social
obligations.”
Massachusetts Assistant Attorney
General Judith Yogman argued the state’s case
before the court in March. He argued that the
state had a legitimate interest in encouraging
“We will probably still see the
cultural tug-of-way. But I think in the
end, this decision will probably be
seen as the first beachhead, and
other states will follow in time.”
—local attorney and Fort Lauderdale
City Commissioner Dean Trantalis
the heterosexual model of marriage.
The state’s governor, Republican Mitt
Romney, indicated that he would back efforts
to amend the state’s constitution to ban
same-sex marriage. “I agree with 3,000 years
of recorded history. I disagree with the
Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts,”
Romney told the Associated Press.
“Marriage is an institution between a man
and a woman … and our constitution and
laws should reflect that.”
At this time, it is unclear what actions
the Massachusetts legislature will take to
address the court’s ruling. The legislature is
currently considering a constitutional
amendment that would legally define a
marriage as a union between one man and
one woman. That proposal has the support
of the state’s speaker of the House, Tom
Finneran.

Lambda Legal Files Complaint Against Cirque du Soleil
Attorney Says HIV-Positive Gymnast Fired Based on ‘Unfounded Fears’
By Rex Wockner
LOS ANGELES — Arguing that
Cirque du Soleil violated state and
federal laws by denying a highly
qualified gymnast an integral part in
its Mystere show this spring, Lambda
Legal Defense and Education Fund, a
gay legal rights group, has filed a
federal discrimination complaint
against the company in Los Angeles.
Cirque du Soleil hired gymnast
Matthew Cusick last summer to train
for its popular show, Mystere. Cusick
spent several months training for the
performance and went through
extensive medical exams with Cirque
du Soleil’s own doctor, whose notes
said Cusick was a “healthy athlete”
who “should be able to perform.” But
shortly before he was scheduled to
begin performing, Cirque du Soleil
told Cusick that because he has HIV,
the company would not continue to
employ him.
“Matthew is a healthy and vibrant man
in top physical condition who is living his
life to the fullest with HIV,” said Hayley
Gorenberg, Lambda Legal’s AIDS Project
director. “Matthew is perfect for this job,
“It defies both common sense
and science to think that
Matthew would exchange bodily
fluids with another gymnast
while flying through the air.”
—Hayley Gorenberg, AIDS Project
director for Lambda Legal
which is why Cirque du Soleil hired him in
the first place and why we’re fighting to
get his job back.”
Cusick was hired to be a high bar
catcher, who would perform on the
Russian high bar and the Chinese poles.
Gays to Greek Government:
‘Kiss Our _____!’
Activists Smooch in Public to Protest TV Station’s Fine
By Derek Gatopoulos
Associated Press Writer
ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Gay protesters
smooched in public Friday to demonstrate
against Greek TV regulators who fined a
station 100,000 euros (U.S. $116,000) for
broadcasting a scene of two men kissing.
Greece’s Mega television was punished
by the National Radio and Television Council
for an Oct. 6 episode of the weekly drama
Close Your Eyes, stirring debate over an issue
rarely discussed in public
“They want to tell us who we can kiss
and what time kissing is appropriate,”
Grigoris Valianatos, a gay activist, said
moments before embracing a fellow protester.
“We believe a kiss is an act of love,
tenderness and courage.”
The television council described the
kissing scene as “vulgar and unacceptable.”
The ruling drew strong criticism from
commentators who pointed to frequent
nudity on Greek television and the repeated
broadcast of clips showing Madonna kissing
individually and do not interact with each
other. On the Russian high bar, the
performer hangs by his legs from a
swinging structure and catches other
performers coming off of a bar.
In a letter this spring
responding to Lambda Legal’s
formal request to reinstate
Cusick in the performance,
Cirque du Soleil’s attorneys said
the company was acting as a
“socially responsible employer”
that has an obligation to avoid
“known safety hazards.”
“It’s preposterous for
Cirque de Soleil to call Matthew
a ‘known safety hazard,’”
Gorenberg said. “Cirque du
Soleil denied Matthew this job
not because of sound science or rational
concern for other employees, but because
of unfounded fear. It defies both common
sense and science to think that Matthew
would exchange bodily fluids with another
gymnast while flying through the air.”
In the complaint filed with the U.S.
singer Britney Spears during the MTV Video
Music Awards in August.
About 30 gays, lesbians and
transsexuals gathered for the protest in
central Athens. They kissed in front of
dozens of reporters, photographers and
cameramen in an event timed to coincide with
evening news shows.
Homosexuals in Greece complain of
discrimination by employers, and displays
of affection by same-sex couples are widely
frowned upon. The country’s predominant
Orthodox Church also strongly opposes gay
marriage.
“We think the [TV regulators] should
resign,” Valianatos said. “We’d like to think
of Greece as a tolerant country.”
Commentators called the fine
hypocritical.
“It’s far more vulgar to repeatedly show
the effeminate gay stereotype, of the shrillvoiced
and foppish man, on ‘family-oriented’
programs,” television critic Marianna Tziantzi
wrote in the Athens daily Kathimerini.
Gymnast Matthew Cusick, was fired from his job at Cirque
du Soleil because he is HIV positive, has filed a complaint
with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission against
the Montreal-based company. (AP Photo/ Matt Houston)
Equal Employment Opportunity
Commission’s Los Angeles office, Lambda
Legal said Cirque du Soleil denied Cusick
a job without a valid reason, since he does
not a pose a health risk or safety threat to
himself or anyone else.
Federal and state laws prohibit
discrimination against people with
disabilities if they pose no real risk to
themselves or others and if the illness
doesn’t interfere with their ability to do
the job.
Cusick, who has been living
with HIV for 10 years and whose
viral load was undetectable in two
comprehensive medical exams by
Cirque du Soleil’s doctor,
disclosed his HIV status without
incident before beginning any
training with Cirque du Soleil.
After spending four months
training in Quebec, he was set to
complete some final last-minute
training before starting in
Mystere, when Cirque du Soleil
officials told him that he no
longer had the job and the income
he had been counting on.
“For any gymnastics
performer, working for Cirque du
Soleil is a dream job,” said Cusick,
who also works part time as a
personal trainer. “Maybe it’s
naïve, but I never thought I’d be
kept from pursuing my dreams
because I’m HIV-positive. I thought
society had gotten beyond thinking that
people with HIV can only do desk jobs
and never come into contact with people.”
Cirque du Soleil was founded in 1984
and has become one of the largest touring
performance shows in the world. More
than 37 million fans have attended its
performances, and nearly 7 million people
are expected to see the eight shows being
performed this year in North America, Europe
and Asia.
Thanksgiving Thoughts
Community Voices Share Their Words of Thanks
By Mary Damiano
Arts & Entertainment Editor
It’s been a crazy year—not that there’s
such a thing as a normal year—but this year
has been crazier than most.
The war our country has been waging
against terrorism culminated in a war in a
foreign land, and even though the war is
supposedly over, American soldiers are
still dying.
While our community won a Supreme
Court battle in June, that ruling has created
something of a backlash, with politicians and
conservative groups rushing to “protect” the
institution of marriage and keep gay and
lesbian couples from legalizing their
commitments to each other. The
“My happy heart is thankful at
making us Americans in this land
of bountiful beauty.”
—Fred Diekmann, theatre
columnist, Hotspots!
Massachusetts ruling was a nice gift, but
there’s still a long way to go.
Discrimination still runs rampant.
Students still get kicked out of school for being
gay. People are still murdered for being gay.
It’s easy to see the bad things, but this
is the time of year to reflect on the good things
in life, the things and people that make it
worth the effort to live each day. This
Thursday, when you’re watching the parade
on TV or falling asleep after stuffing yourself
with your holiday meal, take a moment to
remember what you’re thankful for, who
you’re thankful for and what makes your life
worth living.
Here are some words of thanks from
people in our community:
“I’m thankful that I am not the
and like the victory in the Supreme Court of
the United States this past summer, this was
200 years in coming.
We should not retreat from the victory
we have won in the courts. We should stand
up against constitutional amendments that
might impair the Massachusetts ruling. We
should ask of candidates for public office,
from state hall to the White House, what their
take on the issue is. If they retreat from its
support, so should we from theirs.
This is a hot political issue, to be sure,
and it may galvanize Christians, and mobilize
religious leaders. They will remind us the
Bible gave us Adam and Eve, not Adam and
Steve. We must remind them love, not sex,
bonds unions, and our character, not our
body parts, defines our lives.
The battle has been taken to us, and is
upon us, welcome or not. It may be divisive,
and it may be that most Americans oppose
us. But it is our duty to stand up and be
heard. Last week’s CNN Poll suggested that
65 percent of Americans favored same-sex
marriage or civil unions. But rights are not
for people to vote on. They are inalienable,
sacred and defined as a matter of moral law.
As gay men and women, we must live
our lives so that the town parrot can tell his
tale and we will be proud, not embarrassed.
Let us together set standards of greatness
that bring light to ourselves, and luster to
16 www.ExpressGayNews.com • November 24, 2003
our lives.
Lawyers have learned that marriages are
no longer only holy unions, biblically
defined. They are civil contracts, terminable
at will, based upon irreconcilable differences,
in courts of law. But all Americans should be
free to so contract. The benefits of that union
are in joint tax exemptions, hospital
visitations, and a wealth of other nuances,
like insurance and domestic benefits.
Let’s not forget the state of Florida will
still not allow gays to adopt. The military will
still not permit us to openly join their ranks.
The government still limits gay partners from
immigrating equally into our populations. So
as much as we are winning, and have already
won, there is still more to do—not only in
the courts, but also in the hearts and minds
of Americans.
Celebrate today the victory in
Massachusetts, but record this date as a
single event in a longer journey. History will
judge these small markers as stepping-stones
in the inevitable path to our ultimate freedom.
One day the roadblocks that confront us will
be looked back upon as remnants of a dark
era we have long since illuminated.
We cannot all expect to be there when
the bell tolls firmly and finally, ringing out
justice for all. But you should be proud that
in the scope of your time here you have been
part of that journey. You have witnessed
American legal history for gays, and that
jurisprudence has furthered your dignity,
expanded your rights and made the world
tomorrow safer for your brothers and sisters.
Congratulations.
Bostonians Harassed While Walking
on Beach at John Lloyd Park
I read your article this morning online from my home here in Boston.
My partner of five years and I travel to Fort Lauderdale about five or six times a year
during the winter months from cold, snowy Boston.
We both have a primary home here in Boston and a summer home on Cape
Cod, both near the water. We make it common practice to walk on the beautiful
beaches of Cape Cod on a weekly basis simply to relax and talk.
Last winter, we decided to stay in Dania Beach and go to the beach that everyone
told us would remind us of the beautiful beaches of Cape Cod. It really did, as the
Dania Beach/John Lloyd State Park beach area is not developed for the most part like
the rest of South Florida beaches.
We were walking on Dania Beach near the water at about 7 p.m. (like we and
many thousands do here in Massachusetts) when we heard someone screaming at
us from the Dunes and telling us to “get off the Beach.”
I simply responded by saying, “Can’t we simply walk on the beach?” He
responded by saying, “Can’t you read signs?” and then proceeded to say again, “Get
off the beach.” He was very angry that we were on the beach. We didn’t even notice any
signs. We simply paid to park at the meters in the parking lot of Dania Beach.
We were both baffled that you can’t simply walk on the beach and enjoy the
beautiful peaceful place it truly is.
I was enlightened to read you article and still am completely baffled why you can’t
simply walk on that beach at John Lloyd State Park.
I just wanted to share my experience with you regarding John Lloyd State Park.
We will not return to Dania Beach, as we felt extremely unwelcome and overall in
danger by having a very angry state employee scream at us for simply walking on the
beach. It’s truly a waste of taxpayers money and a waste of a human life to have some
overpaid state employee sitting in the dunes harassing people who just want to walk
the beach.
Thank you for the article and letting us know what really is going on.
I’m glad to know it was not just us.
Will State Refund Fines of John Lloyd Park Victims?
I was arrested last year on John Lloyd State Park beach. I was with my friend from
New Jersey. We had just gotten out of the water and were sitting on my chair. We were
harassed and arrested by Officer D. Jones. I paid the fine of $172 for being in a
“restricted area.”
Now, I am wondering if it’s possible to get our fine money back by e-mailing the
Inspector General’s office in Tallahassee if its investigation finds fault. I also want to
thank Norm Kent and The Express for all the aid that you have given in fighting the
situation at John Lloyd Park.
MAIN STREET from Front Page
in Wilton Manors was one of the night’s
main themes. The evening opened with a
min-concert performed by two members of
the Haydn Society, a local chamber music
group. Wendy Reynolds, executive director
of the Haydn Society, sang “I Could Have
Danced All Night” from My Fair Lady and a
piece from Gianni Schicchi, a Puccini opera.
She was accompanied by her husband,
Steven Sigurdson, who played the cello.
They received a rousing ovation from the
audience.
Mayor Jim Stork then explained why
Main Street, a national program geared to
small to mid-size cities, was brought to Wilton
Manors. “We need this program so that we
don’t turn into what some other South Florida
communities have turned into with overdevelopment
or the wrong kind of
development,” Stork said. “The Main Street
program has proven all over the country to
be an economic development model.” Stork
added that one of the program’s main goals
is to involve local community groups and
residents in development decisions. “It’s all
about you,” he said.
Stork announced the Main Street program
had implemented an Affordable Housing Task
Force. A flier distributed by the program titled
“Who Need Affordable Workforce Housing?”
talks about the need for affordable residences
for service industry workers and displaced
elderly people to maintain the city “economic
and cultural diversity.”
Hal Miksch, who recently moved from
Ohio with his wife to head the Main Street
program, described Wilton Manors as “a small
town in the middle of a big city that has its own
very special charm and character.”
He then mentioned some of the city’s
new attractions that are improving quality
of life, including the recently opened Island
City Park Reserve, which will include canoe
and kayak access ramps, and the
refurbished Hagen Park, which is scheduled
to celebrate its grand opening Nov. 21. He
noted that the Farmers Market, which is held
every Saturday from 8 to 4 p.m. in Hagen
Park, has been a hit, with vendors selling
produce, bakery items and flowers. Wilton
Station is also in the process of development.
Miksch noted that one of the goals of
Main Street is to create a walkable,
pedestrian-friendly city. He said recent
disillusionment with suburban living is
reversing a decades-old trend
and leading to the revitalization
of communities such as Wilton
Manors. “Nationally what
you’ve been seeing over the
past 20 to 30 years is people
moving farther and farther away
from the city center, getting
bigger lots, putting on back
decks, no sidewalks, can’t walk
to school anymore, can’t walk to the grocery
store anymore, don’t know their neighbors.
Part of the reason you’re seeing the influx of
people moving into Wilton Manors is that
they got out there and realized that what they
lost was quality of life. They spend quite a
lot more time than we do in cars.”
In recent years, Miksch said there has
been a trend of people moving back to the
east side of I-95. He pointed out that people
who live in “more walkable communities are
healthier” and are less likely to be overweight.
“In Wilton Manors, our quality of life is higher
because we don’t spend two to three hours
a day in our cars,” he said.
For those who do have to use their cars,
Miksch identified a need for more parallel
parking along Wilton Drive and also parking
behind the buildings. He also suggested
widening the bike lanes to get bikers off the
sidewalks. “Nobody uses the 3-foot bike
lanes because they’re not safe,” he said.
As far as attracting new businesses,
Miksch said the city would “not be focusing
on big retail chain. We will be targeting
distinctive retail.”
Miksch also spoke of “missing teeth”
or holes in the city’s façade line. He described
the Five Corners area as “dysfunctional and
not welcoming” and suggested more focus
on the Dixie Highway area.
“We need to welcome people to our
city,” he said, suggesting arches or “dramatic
gateways” at the 11 bridges entering the city.
Miksch also emphasized the need for
“workforce housing.” “The great real estate
boom threatens to drive out working-class
people,” he said. “The teacher who works
here can barely afford to live here.”
Miksch noted that the median household
income in Wilton Manors is $41,000, which is
below both the U.S. average and the average
for the greater Fort Lauderdale area. But he said
the home values are much higher than the
average. He also pointed out that 58 percent of
Wilton Manors consists of “non-family
households”—which he identified as gays and
lesbians and elderly residents. That figure
compares with 37 percent for the greater Fort
Lauderdale area.
Miksch summed up the program’s main
goals as “design, marketing, economic
development and the arts.” “There is a buzz
about Wilton Manors, and the arts
community is leading that buzz,” Miksch
said.
Some of the other goals that Miksch
outlined for the program included
the following:
• Enhancing the role of Wilton Drive
• Preserving and encouraging Diversity
• Reinforcing the “Island City” image
• Maximizing economic values and activity
• Supporting local businesses
Heartbreak Can Lead to Revelations
Difficult Breakup Brought to Surface Things to be Thankful for in My Life
My grandfather used to say this: The
worst thing that can happen to you can be
the best thing that can happen to
you, if you don’t let the worst get
the best of you.
Now certainly heartbreak is not
high on the list of worst things. We
live in a world where people are
gravely sick, where children are
abused, where homes in California
were burnt into ash and people in
Baghdad live in the midst of war.
My grandfather himself coined
his motto when his thriving
television sales and repair business
went bankrupt during World War
II, threatening to throw him and his young
family into the streets of Brooklyn.
So the world is full of worst things. Let
us keep that in perspective.
And yet I’ve found that for me, this
heartbreak, the end of my four-year
relationship, is for now my worst thing. This
is probably because my heart had never been
broken before. Not in high school and college,
not after my seven-year marriage to a woman
(it was painful, but we parted mutually), not
ever.
Sure, I had listened to the music of
heartbreak. I had read the book. I had seen
the movie. And from this I thought I
understood it. But I had no idea.
I didn’t know it was so physical. I didn’t
know how your fragile pink insides turn
suddenly nuclear until you think they might
explode. I didn’t know that food becomes
18 www.ExpressGayNews.com • November 24, 2003
ash in your mouth. I didn’t know that sleep
becomes something you can’t have, even if
you wanted it—which you
don’t. I didn’t know that
heartbreak is a sister to grief.
Now I do.
And oddly, this
Thanksgiving, I find myself
grateful for that. My bitter
agony turned into a blessing—
or rather, it reminded me of all
the ways I am blessed. This,
then, is what I am thankful for:
I am thankful for selfknowledge.
I’ve learned more
about relationships in the past
three months than in the past 30 years. I
understand better the ways they are both
fragile and tough. I see more clearly how we
sometimes sabotage our own happiness and
how our unhappiness in other areas of our
lives sometimes sabotages our relationships.
I am thankful for the kindness of
strangers. We often think we live in a cold,
cruel world. And yet one day, riding north on
the Clark bus, I inexplicably started crying.
Not just tearing up quietly and elegantly, but
sobbing with my whole body. An older
woman next to me, a stranger, put her arms
around me and pulled my head to her
shoulder. “It’s OK, honey,” she said. “It will
be OK.”
I am thankful for friendship. Gays and
lesbians often talk about how we choose our
own families. Never is that more striking than
when we are in crisis, when people come
through for us in unexpected ways. My
friends dropped everything for me. They slept
over when I was lonely. They listened to me
rage and weep. They cooked for me to make
sure I ate. They ran errands with me and fixed
things in my apartment and told me “I love
you” over and over again, and gave wise,
quiet counsel. One told me: “I promise you,
it will get better,” and I held onto that for a
long time. If they lived far away, they called
daily just to check in. There is no greater gift
than this.
I am thankful for my family: for my mother
who came to stay for a few days and turned
my apartment into a home, for my brother
and sister, who called and wrote and worried.
I am thankful that happiness doesn’t
wait to be called home, but eventually settles
back into hearts of its own accord. A friend
told me that one day I’d walk down the street
and realize, suddenly, that I was happy. Last
week, on a cloudy day, I walked through
Andersonville with my dog Max. For a
minute, the sun split the sky, giving everyone
I passed a radiant glow. I felt that glow echo
inside myself and was startled to recognize
an old friend—happiness.
I am thankful and a little bemused by
this thing called “dating” and for the women
who have brought new sparkle into my life.
For nature, who held off her blustery weather
until I made my recovery, making long walks
by Lake Michigan possible and welcome. For
my editors, who cut me a lot of slack and for
you, my readers, who e-mailed me notes of
concern and care from all over the country.
I am thankful for selfknowledge.
I’ve
learned more about
relationships in the
past three months than
in the past 30 years…. I
see more clearly how
we sometimes
sabotage our own
happiness and how
our unhappiness in
other areas of our lives
sometimes sabotages
our relationships.
For flag football, which let me work out my
aggressions on the field and in particular my
own football team, who surrounded and
sustained me.
And I am thankful for love. Not the
romantic “in love” variety, which goes and
comes on a puckish whim, but the deep and
abiding love of family, friends and life
partners, which roots us and warms us until
we blossom into joy.
Forms of Discrimination
Data Collection on Marital Status Leaves Gays with no Box to Check
The Boxer Rebellion is an event that
might come up on a quiz show or in a
crossword puzzle. But my boxer rebellion
began on a recent holiday trip to
the Bahamas. I’m not referring to
the abandonment of Jockeys, CKs
and other briefs in favor of boxer
shorts. Rather, I’m referring to my
personal rebellion at checking off
boxes on forms of various sorts that
want to know whether I’m married,
divorced, widowed or single.
The need for a rebellion
against this useless, intrusive,
inadequate data collection came
into focus when I recently joined
friends for a four-day Royal
Caribbean cruise from Miami to Nassau and
Key West. The main impetus for a group of
seven gay men to go on a straight cruise
was—you guessed it—the price. It was
cheaper than staying in Fort Lauderdale for
four days. Repeatedly, however, throughout
our trip I was requested to complete forms
that included a question concerning my
marital status, and none of the printed options
were applicable to me.
The choices invariably listed on the
immigration and customs forms or the cruise
line information form were married, divorced,
widowed or single. I could have checked
divorced and, by definition of the
government, single, and let the data
collectors sort it out. Or I could have checked
“none of the above,” deferring to the fact
that I’m in a domestic partnership. That
choice, however, wasn’t listed.
In my own view, I’m more married now
than I was when I was in a
traditional male/female, kids
and cat routine, but in terms of
the immigration and customs
declarations, I completed on
our trip, or on the forms I fill
out at the doctor’s office, the
bank and a host of other places,
the choice of married, divorced,
widowed or single doesn’t
accurately capture my
relationship status.
I’m really not sure why
this information is collected in
the first place. Who to notify in case of an
emergency is important, but my relationship
status? Does it really make any difference to
my surgeon whether I’m single, married or
divorced, or to my credit card company or to
customs and immigration? If the doc is cute,
it might make a difference to me, but I don’t
ask him for his marital status before I sign up
as a patient. Maybe I should.
If this gathering of useless information
is a deceptive way of obtaining data for the
Defense of Marriage Act, or for Focus on the
Family or whoever, they should at least
include a viable range of choices, such as
“Married happily,” “Married unhappily,”
“Married and contemplating divorce,”
“Married and contemplating suicide.” Or for
the gay man, it might be “Single but looking”
or “Single and planning to stay that way but
still looking.” Or, perish the thought, for some
of us in domestic partnerships there might
be a check off box for “In domestic
partnership—and still looking.” If the
government wants the info, then let’s give
them information that means something.
Before I cruise again, as in boarding a
ship and going somewhere, I may get little
self-stickum address labels printed up that
instead of my address simply state, “In
Domestic Partnership.” I could paste it over
the boxes where the form fanatics want me to
declare my relationship status. Since the
minimum order is usually for 200 or more,
one roll would take care of all the forms I
need to complete between here and the
graveyard, where I hope the question is no
longer relevant.
Proposing an IDP, “In Domestic
Partnership,” box on the various forms we all
fill out isn’t an original idea. Jon Kernodle
proposed this more than a year ago in The
Express. He suggested that the Human
Rights Campaign, ACLU and other
organizations supporting gay rights begin
pushing for an IDP box as the next step in
the evolution of our civil liberties.
His conclusion: “Ultimately, a box on a
form that is ‘our box’ could be the first real
advance in gay civil rights in America—
perhaps equivalent to the abolition of slavery,
or women’s suffrage or laws requiring public
access for handicapped persons. Let’s move
this to the front burner, HRC, and other gay
Moving out of the
closet and into a box,
even an “In Domestic
Partnership” box, at
first didn’t impress me
as much of a move. But
the more forms I fill out,
the more I realize that,
yes, I’d like to
somehow register
accurately and
correctly who I am and
the relationship I’m in.
leaders. The time has come for a box for
IDP—on a tax form, on an insurance
application, on a doctor’s questionnaire,
whatever.”
Moving out of the closet and into a box,
even an IDP box, at first didn’t impress me as
much of a move. But the more forms I fill out,
the more I realize that, yes, I’d like to
somehow register accurately and correctly
who I am and the relationship I’m in. If I utilize
the choices currently available to me on forms
and applications, I’m providing misleading
information. I want to stand up and be
counted and an IDP box, a boxer rebellion, is
one way to do it.
Infiltrating the Coral Ridge ‘Reclaiming America’ Conference
Speakers Urge ‘Christians’ to ‘Seize Control of World’s Wealth’ and the U.S. Government
Editor’s Note: Freelance writer Marc Paige
went “undercover” for The Express to
attend the Rev. D. James Kennedy’s
“Reclaiming America for Christ 2003”
conference at the Coral Ridge Presbyterian
Church in Fort Lauderdale. This is his
firsthand account of the event.
“Reclaiming America for Christ 2003,”
although sponsored by a
local church, was first and
foremost a conference about
politics. And the politics
espoused at the Coral Ridge
Presbyterian Church on Oct.
24-25 was, among other
things, decidedly anti-gay.
More alarming than the
content of the conference
was that Fort Lauderdale
Mayor Jim Naugle was there
to give a welcoming
address. In addition, many
of the speakers have close ties to the
administrations of Gov. Jeb Bush and
President George W. Bush.
Part revival meeting, part workshop for
grassroots political organizing, the
conference advocated eliminating any
separation between fundamentalist Christian
religious views and politics. Attendees were
told their religion obliged them to rid the world
of pornography, abortion and, most of all,
homosexuality. Speakers called
homosexuality “the biggest threat to
religious freedom” and an evil. One minister
said, “[Homosexuality] is so nasty and
disgusting it makes God want to vomit.”
20 www.ExpressGayNews.com • November 24, 2003
The conference was designed to inspire
these religious extremists to action. One
presenter described his successful campaign
to recall school committee members in
suburban San Diego who had voted to add
sexual orientation to their anti-discrimination
policy. Another gave a workshop on the
importance of appearance and body language
in being an effective advocate. All
the speakers were preparing these
legions to wrest control from
governmental bodies that
do not share their extremist
views.
During his talk, Dr.
O’Neal Dozier, pastor of the
Worldwide Christian
Church in Pompano Beach,
cited texts in the New
Testament to justify his
statement that “Christians,
for the sake of Jesus, must
seize control of the world’s economics.”
Dozier also had strong views on gays. “Of
all the gorgeous, beautiful, pretty women in
the world, why would a man want to lust
after another man… it must be a sickness.”
And he proclaimed AIDS to be a way for God
to kill gay people. “As Christians, we’re not
going to put anyone to death, but God has a
way of doing that…AIDS is a type of
judgment for the sin of homosexuality.”
When Dozier took questions, I asked
him why then, were 90 percent of the world’s
AIDS cases passed heterosexually. His
answer: “My studies show that it began
through homosexual activity.”
Pam Stenzel, an abstinence-only educator
who participated in President Bush’s White
House Faith-Based and Community Initiatives
meeting, also addressed AIDS and STDs. Her
message was abstinence until marriage and
monogamy as the only way to avoid sexually
transmitted diseases. She is correct that a
couple who are both virgins and monogamous
for life will not get STDs, but by going around
the country telling young people condoms are
not safe, she dismisses the science proving
“As Christians, we’re not going to put
anyone to death, but God has a way of
doing that…AIDS is a type of judgment
for the sin of homosexuality.”
— Dr. O’Neal Dozier, pastor of the Worldwide
Christian Church in Pompano Beach
condoms offer a great deal of protection. But
Stenzel says she won’t teach young people
to “sin safely.”
After her presentation, I approached
Stenzel and asked what her message of
abstinence until marriage said to young gay
people who are most at risk of HIV and lack
the option to marry. After hesitating, she said
her message was monogamy for everybody.
I asked if she was saying that gay men and
women should find one partner and remain
monogamous. Realizing that to answer in the
affirmative would be advocating gay
relationships, she said that monogamy was
impossible for gay people. I pointed out we
were in a church that did everything to
undermine stable gay relationships, and she
countered that being gay was a choice. She
walked away as I was challenging her on the
efficacy of condoms.
As I headed to the sanctuary to find a
seat for the next presentation, two Fort
Lauderdale police officers grabbed me,
responding to a complaint that I had been
harassing Stenzel. When they found her and
she said I did nothing wrong, the police let
me go. Undeterred by this attempt at
intimidation, I listened to the final conference
speaker, former Alabama Chief Justice Roy
Moore. Not surprisingly, amid his calls to
bring the Ten Commandments into his
Stork’s Exhibit Casts Old Art Masters in New Light
Artist Elyahou Lallouz Believes in Mixing Paint and Charity
By Phil LaPadula
Managing Editor
Elyahou Lallouz once painted a portrait
of President George Bush Sr.—with his eyes
closed. He also painted a shut-eyed President
Bill Clinton. One could search for some
profound political message in such
renderings—the typical politician turning a
blind eye to the needs of average people, or
perhaps the conductor of the train of state
asleep at the switch.
But while art is always open to the
interpretation of the beholder, Lallouz insists
he was not trying to creat political commentary
RECLAIMING AMERICA from page 20 to Florida’s 17th Circuit Judicial Nominating
courtroom and God into the legislatures of
America, he denigrated a recent Supreme
Court ruling with, “sodomy is now deemed
a right; evil is now called good.”
The people who attended “Reclaiming
America for Christ 2003” represent the most
extreme form of religious fundamentalism
in America, and their numbers are small.
But the conference gave them their
marching orders to return to their
communities to “grab hold of the
government of America” for their version
of Christianity. This is why it is unsettling
to see politicians cater to these anti-
American ideals, and why Mayor Naugle
needs to explain his presence at the
opening of a conference that had God
vomiting from the love of gay people, and
compelling “Christians to seize control of
the world’s wealth.” Gov. Bush also needs
to explain why he appointed O’Neal Dozier
on canvas. Instead, the political portraits were
merely a part of his “Dreamer Series.” He has
also painted tennis star Andy Roddick, former
Dolphin quarterback Dan Marino and Isaac
Hayes, all with their eyes closed. He painted
all of the “dreamers” in rocking chairs because
“rocking chairs symbolize comfort. It shows
they accomplished something, and can now
relax,” he says.
“One hundred years from now, I may be
considered a master,” Lallouz jokes. “By then,
everyone may paint portraits with the subject’s
eyes closed.”
While his “Dreamer Series” has included
Commission, and, after receiving calls
complaining of this man’s hatred toward
gays, had a staff member call Dozier to say,
“Pastor, the governor is pleased to have a
man like you on his side.”
While listening to a presentation from
an “ex-gay” woman, I looked around the
sanctuary at the many teenagers in the
audience. After two days of listening to
negative messages about homosexuality, my
thoughts turned to those young people in
the audience who might be gay and how they
were dealing with all of this. They are the
reason we must monitor these conferences,
and confront politicians who support them.
Impressionable young minds are why these
extremist ideas must be exposed for what they
are: un-American, anti-social and dangerous
messages of hate.
The gay, and straight youth of America
deserve nothing less.
“Masters of the Political World” and “Masters
of the Sports World,” Lallouz captures the
masters of the art world itself in his exhibit
currently on display at Stork’s Bakery in Wilton
Manors.
The exhibit features some of the more
eccentric old masters—including Vincent Van
Gogh, Salvadore Dali, Andy Warhol and Marc
Chagall—with their eyes open. But the
portraits are certainly not how the masters
would have seen themselves in their time.
Instead, Lallouz took self-portraits of the artists
and doctored them with his own style of cubist
abstraction to create images that mirror some
of the quirks and eccentricities that history
has recorded about these figures. They are
still recognizable—Dali with his trademark
mustache, Van Gogh amid swirls of yellow.
“I wanted to do something light and
humorous, and I wanted to show who they
were,” Lallouz says. “I tried to use the colors
that would symbolize the painters. I wanted
them to be part of the background, part of the
paint.”
His next project will be “Masters of
Entertainment.” He plans to paint portraits of
the Beatles, Frank Sinatra and other popular
icons.
Lallouz, who operates Galleria Lallouz art
company in Rio Vista with his wife, Rhonda,
has devoted much of his artwork to charitable
causes. He has donated his paintings at
auctions to raise money for several local
groups, including Tuesday’s Angels, Kids in
Distress, the Andy Roddick Foundation,
Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation,
ArtsUnited and the Dolphin Democrats.
Artist Elyahou Lallouz next to his portrait
of Vincent Van Gogh at Stork’s Bakery in
Wilton Manors. Lallouz has donated
paintings to numerous charitable
causes including Tuesday’s Angels and
ArtsUnited.
While he concedes that the “starving
artist” is as much a reality today as he was in
Van Gogh’s time, Lallouz still thinks it’s
important for artists to give back to the
community, and he is disappointed by some
of the successful artists he knows who could
afford to give back but don’t.
“Before all the technology and mass
media, artists and writers were the main
messengers,” Lallouz says. “Today, artists still
have to be the bridges of society. The
institutions are not working; their not meeting
needs.”
Lallouz hopes his molding of art and
charity will open some eyes about some local
needs.
The Lallouz exhibit runs through Nov. 30 at
Stork’s Bakery, which is located at 2505 NE 15th
Ave. in Wilton Manors. For directions, call
release to The Express announcing that Out Magazine had named Chrissy
Gephardt as one of the most intriguing gay people of 2003. The press release
quotes Chrissy Gephardt as saying, “I am extremely excited and proud to be
named as one of Out Magazine’s ‘Out 100’ for 2003. The 2004 presidential election
has serious consequences for the GLBT community, and I hope my presence on
the campaign trail has helped to raise awareness of the important issues that we
June 2003, she has been working full time on her father’s campaign.
By Charlene Lichtenstein For the week of 11/24/03
As we tuck into our turkeys this week, let’s take a gander at the Sun in Sagittarius.
This jolly orb gives a push to volcanic Pluto and heats up various parts of our lives
into a frenzied boil. Stew on a low flame until Christmas. Then serve with saucy relish.
ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 20)
Start your steamroller gay Ram and flatten all obstacles when Sun in Sag
conjuncts Pluto. But before you start tearing up the landscape, check to see if
there are any buried landmines and sinkholes. You don’t want to get sucked
into a deep hole. Or do you?
TAURUS (APRIL 21 - MAY 21)
Sex with a stranger may be stranger than you anticipate. An intimate foray leaves
your common sense tucked in your wallet with you know what. Don’t get carried
away by just another pretty face and do something inadvisable or reckless.
GEMINI (MAY 22 - JUNE 21)
Sun in Sag collides with Pluto and creates divisions in your personal
relationships. Pink Twins are forced to compromise much to their chagrin.
Seek your counterpart, not your competitor, compadre. Leave the fighting
to your business dealings. Sigh!
CANCER (JUNE 22 - JULY 23)
How does anarchy spread at work? Distracted queer Crabs find themselves quashing
a rebellion. Develop a diplomatic agenda especially during the Pluto / Sun conjunction.
The more you push now means just that much more you will relinquish later.
LEO (JULY 24 - AUGUST 23)
Don’t tackle anything (or anyone) gigantic now. You are tempted to take on
much more than you can chew but more than a mouthful is wasted. Relax, lie
back and allow the planets to recharge your creative spark. Meantime, avoid
light sockets.
.
VIRGO (AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 23)
Why would you restrict yourself in a “straight” jacket for the sake of family
peace? Use the Sun conjunct Pluto to proudly set the record queer with folks
and talk turkey. Obviously there can be no more compromise. The honest
Sag Sun has spoken.
LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 24 - OCTOBER 23)
Queer Libras try to be diplomatic and charming but the burping Sun in Sag
energy has to get the word Out now! Speak up and fight for your beliefs and be
prepared to step on a few toes to get your point across. But watch where you
point, cousin. Ouch!
SCORPIO (OCTOBER 24 - NOVEMBER 22)
Proud Scorps are advised to hold on tight to their wallets. The extravagant Sag
energy coupled with volcanic Pluto upends your pot of gold. Don’t flash your cash
now; this transit attracts all sorts of shysters and scroungers. Wanna buy a bridge?
SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 23 - DECEMBER 22)
The Sun conjunct Pluto offers you a rare opportunity to make an impactful first
impression with an extremely powerful and influential person. How impactful is
up to you, of course; will you insist on wearing those pink peekaboos, gay Archer?
CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 23 - JANUARY 20)
If you decide to spend your time volunteering for a great gay cause (and you
should...), do so with a cause close to home. The Sun conjunct Pluto unleashes
some unexpected mishaps on queer Caps who wander the streets at night. When
in doubt, cab it.
AQUARIUS (JANUARY 21 - FEBRUARY 19)
Friendships may be temporarily put to the test. Pals feel the need to help you
along the “right” path. Did I say “help”? I meant push. This power struggle
may result in a complete reassessment of the relationship. Let them down
gently, Aqueerius.
PISCES (FEBRUARY 20 - MARCH 20)
Guppies are put to the professional test and emerge swimmingly well after
the stormy waters settle. Optimistic Sun in Sag conjunct Pluto helps you
distinguish fish from foul. Follow your rainbow no matter what; the rewards
won’t be far behind.
