IWHAT IS THIS BOOK ABOUT? This book is about the Lanterman Developmental Disabilities Services Act (people also call it the Lanterman Act, for short) which was passed in 1969. This is the California law that says people with developmental disabilities and their families have a right to get the services and supports they need to live like people who don’t have disabilities. This book will help you: • Learn about what the Lanterman Act promises you • Be a partner with the regional center and other service providers when you make choices about your life • Get ideas about how to get the services and supports you need There are many words that lots of people don’t like, like the word “mental retardation.” Labels like this don’t tell others about the person. We use this word and other labels in this book because those are the words written in the law. Labels are used to get services. 3
