Be On the Lookout
Saturday July 24, 2010
Atlanta, Georgia
Kelsey Taylor Wins Two-Year Term as Youth Rep.
The results are in, and you’ve
decided that Captain Kelsey Taylor
from Post 521 in Bakersfield, California
will represent you for the next
two years as the National Law Enforcement
Exploring Youth Representative!
There are now more than
35,000 active explorers in 1,662
posts across the nation and internationally,
so her job will be a large
and challenging one.
The BOLO sat down for a few
minutes with Kelsey just after she
found out the results. In this BOLO
exclusive, Taylor explains what
inspires her, some of her top priorities,
and how she wants to work
with you during the next two years
to make Law Enforcement Exploring
even better.
Congratulations, Kelsey! Tell
us how you first got involved in
Exploring?
Actually, I only got involved in Exploring
four years ago when a friend
told me about a meeting when I
was in high school. My family isn’t
involved in law enforcement, and
it wasn’t a career path I had been
considering. However, once I got
involved it seemed exciting and I
really plunged into it! The work law
enforcement does is so important
and the activities we do with the
Bakersfield Police Department are
so interesting that it really changed
my life. It’s really given me an opportunity
to learn so much—it’s the
greatest thing that has ever happened
to me!
Did you enjoy this year’s conference?
It was a tremendous experience!
My first conference was in Ft. Collins
in 2008, and each year it gets
better and better! We had eight out
of 40 Explorers from our Post here
this year. I don’t think you can get a
real sense of what Exploring is all
about without coming to the regionals,
and particularly the national
conference, so as national youth
representative I would like to find
ways to make it possible for more
Explorers to get to these events.
See KELSEY page 6
KELSEY
Continued from cover page
How can Posts raise money
and get organized to get more
Explorers to conferences?
Our Post works to direct traffic
for special events at Pebble Beach
Golf Course special events, such
as the ATT Pro Am and at the U.S.
Open, as well as direct traffic at the
mall during the holiday season. It
gives us a sense of one aspect of
police work - the long hours that
police put in, and of working with
the public—and we also raise lots
of money for our Post!
This may not work for every
Post, but there are many great and
creative ideas out there. We need
to do more to share those ideas
and work together to make all our
Posts stronger.
Tell Explorers more about
your ideas concerning networking
and communications.
Really, bringing Explorers and
Posts closer together as part of regional
and national networks is a
top priority of mine. I believe that
Exploring needs to have a bigger
presence on the Internet, especially
on social networking sites,
and I hope to help lead that effort.
There’s no reason why all our
Posts shouldn’t be “in the know.”
For example, not too far away from
our Post is another one sponsored
by the Kern County Sheriff’s Office.
They didn’t even know about
the national conference! I want
to make sure every Post has the
same set of information in order to
give all Explorers the same set of
opportunities.
Our generation is comfortable
with the tools that can do that. For
example, we need a more developed
and organized fan page on
Facebook, and I’ll be looking at
other ways that we can use social
networking to our advantage.
We can take our connectivity and
communications up another notch.
I want to bring my knowledge and
skills to the table at meetings and
throughout Exploring on a national
level.
What other ideas do you have
for Exploring?
To continue on the topic of technology,
I’d like to see how we can
use computers to our advantage,
from creating electronic, detailed
hour logs, to developing programs
that will keep our Posts more organized.
I know that at our Post,
having information available in an
organized way has made a world
of difference to us.
Also, as Ms. Patrick said at the
opening ceremonies, there are
hundreds of thousands of law enforcement
positions opening up in
the next five years, and Explorers
should be leading the way, filling
those jobs, and making law enforcement
their careers. And getting
the word out about Explorers
can only help in that regard.
We understand uniforms and
a professional appearance are
important to you.
They are very important. Having
a professional demeanor is necessary
to having others perceive
you the way you want them to. I’d
like to see each Post have Class
A, B, and C uniform for each Explorer.
I think that would promote a
crisp, clean look for Explorers and
Exploring, and it would do a lot to
maintain and improve our image
both nationally and in our communities.
You’ve come a long way in
just a few short years. Who has
inspired you the most?
I think it’s our Post Advisors,
Steve and Cindy London. As opposed
to leading our Post by telling
us what to do, they truly acted
as advisors: leading us by giving
us advice. They said that ‘it’s
your post: we are here to help you
make decisions, not make them
for you.’ I was somewhat shy, and
they took me under their wings.
They helped make me more outgoing.
They taught me how to fly,
to make decisions, to lead, and for
that I am so grateful.
You will be celebrating your
birthday in just a few weeks and
two years from now you’ll be
21. What do you want to do after
Exploring?
I’ll be a sophomore at California
State- Bakersfield next year, and
I’ll be “graduating” from the Exploring
program in two years. But
I’ll tell you, no matter what, I will
always be involved with Exploring,
so I know that is one activity I’ll be
doing for the rest of my life.
These next two years as national
youth representative will open
up many new doors… and I hope
to share those experiences with
all Explorers using the new media
tools I mentioned earlier! I have
tremendous admiration for the
sponsors of our chapter, the Bakersfield
Police Department, but I
also have been thinking about opportunities
at the FBI, DEA, ATF,
and elsewhere. I plan on attending
the leadership academies next
year and getting to know some of
the great people who make Law
Enforcement Exploring the great
program it is!
Thank you so much for your
time and best of luck!
MARINE
Continued from cover page
the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office,
remembered that “everyone
always wanted to be around Larry.
He was a very positive person who
had lots of friends not just in our
Post but throughout Colorado Exploring.”
While Larry never competed
in a national convention, he
did go to the regionals in Greeley,
Colorado before graduating from
the Exploring program.
Like his father and stepfather,
Harris decided to join the Marines,
and he served a tour of duty in
Iraq before going to Afghanistan.
He didn’t forget his fellow Explorers
however, coming back to see
his friends at Post meetings when
he had a break from basic training,
and again before going to Iraq.
He continued to stay in touch with
them via e-mail and Facebook, letting
them know what was going on
in his life even under often difficult
circumstances.
Harris enjoyed Exploring activities
such as ride-alongs, and was
a defensive lineman on his school
football team.
“He had tremendous willpower
and determination. And he always
had a positive attitude and gave
one-hundred percent at all times,”
said Boulder Deputy Sheriff Sam
Hard who is an Explorer advisor
with Post 500 at this year’s national
conference.
Harris, who received a Purple
Heart for his bravery while serving
in Iraq, was sent on a second combat
tour, this time in Afghanistan
which began earlier this year. On
July 1, Harris saw that one of his
fellow Marines was under fire, lying
wounded, and needing help. Without
thinking of his own personal
safety, Harris went out to help him,
and while carrying his fellow Marine,
he stepped on an Improvised
Explosive Device.
Harris was killed but the Marine
who he rescued survived.
Just four months before his tragic
death, Harris married his sweetheart
of eight years, Stacia. He
is survived by her, his father and
stepfather, his mother and grandmother,
as well as a brother, Kyle.
His funeral was held July 13th,
and many of his friends from Exploring
attended.
Everyone in Exploring extends
our prayers and thoughts to his
family, friends and all who mourn
the passing of this American patriot
who was taken from us far too
young.
