Mission Statement
It is the mission of Learning for Life to enable young people to become responsible individuals
by teaching positive character traits, career development, leadership, and life skills so
they can make ethical choices and achieve their full potential.
“The study of science should be a fundamental part of educating our youth. Helping youth explore different aspects
of science (from chemistry to environmental science, to archaeology, to astronomy, and many more) opens up the
mysteries of our world to them. The Science Careers Exploring program is a great way to help youth get hands-on
experience in the various fields of science.”
George “Pinky” Nelson, Ph.D., former astronaut
Western Washington University, Bellingham, Washington
“It’s very important to expose youth to science during their early educational experience. This exposure should
continue throughout their school years. Science Careers Exploring is a program that helps schools achieve this goal.”
Romanita Harrod, science teacher
Northwestern High School, Hyattsville, Maryland
“High achievement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education is critical to the accomplishment
of NASA’s mission. By engaging students in real-life science experiences, the Science Careers Exploring program is
inspiring the next generation of Explorers. When students are inspired, they are motivated to learn more and assume
more difficult challenges. As the technological world changes, a scientifically literate society is essential to ensuring
that decisions affecting our daily lives are made wisely.”
James Stofan, director
What Is Exploring
Everyone Wins With Exploring
Exploring is Learning for Life’s career education
program for young men and women who are 14 (and
have completed the eighth grade) or 15 to 20 years old.
Adults are selected by the participating organization for
involvement in the program. Color, race, religion, gender,
sexual orientation, ethnic background, economic status,
or citizenship is not a criterion for participation.
Exploring’s purpose is to provide experiences to help
young people mature and to prepare them to become
responsible and caring adults. Explorers are ready to
investigate the meaning of interdependence in their
personal relationships and communities.
Exploring is based on a unique and dynamic relationship
between youth and the organizations in their communities.
Local community organizations initiate an Explorer post
by matching their people and program resources to the
interests of young people in the community. The result is a
program of activities that helps youth pursue their special
interests, grow, and develop.
