A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
It is a pleasure to present the 2010 Mercy College Annual Report.
As we reflect upon the past year, I am very proud of the achievements made by our College
community. Thanks to the dedication, hard work, and leadership of our Board of Trustees,
faculty, and staff, Mercy College is well-positioned for a strong and vibrant future, one in
which the College continues to deliver on its mission of providing an affordable, high
quality education to our students.
Within this report, you will read about the highlights of the past year. Our enrollment
continues on an upward trend, reaching nearly 10,000 students in 2009-10 as more and
more students are making Mercy their first-choice college. This year, our ground breaking
Personalized Achievement Contract (PACT) program expanded from a pilot of 50 students
to include more than 500 entering freshmen. Based upon the PACT program’s success, the
College received a multi-million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Education to
fund a graduate PACT program customized to the needs of graduate students.
We are also pleased to spotlight stories of just a few of the many Mercy College students,
faculty, and alumni who are distinguishing themselves through academic achievement,
professional affiliations, and volunteerism. Among them are award recipients, students
engaged in community service, and faculty members who traveled the globe providing
instruction and essential aid.
As we build upon our many accomplishments, across our campuses and our communities,
we thank you for your continued support of Mercy College and our students. Your support
truly energizes our College community, ensures our future success, and allows us to prepare
an increasing number of students for in-demand careers and enriched lives.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kimberly R. Cline
THE PACT MENTORING PROGRAM EXPANDS
PACT LinkedTo Rise In Retention
Mercy College’s pioneering Personalized Achievement Contact (PACT), a pilot
program begun in spring 2009 with 50 students, has expanded to include more
than 560 participants this year.
The increase tells a powerful story about Mercy College and its dedication to student success.
The unique combination of PACT services and programs gives our students the confidence
and assertive edge needed to succeed in today’s highly competitive world, making our PACT
students the best candidates for the graduate school or job of their choice. Approximately 750
new students are expected to join PACT in the fall of 2010.
PACT Highlights:
> The PACT is an official “Best Practice” of the National Association of Colleges and
Employers (NACE) for career services and student retention.
> As a result of the PACT, student retention rates have increased 15 percent this past
year.
The issue of retention rates has significant implications for the U.S. economy as well.
According to data from CEOs For Cities, raising retention and graduation rates by even
a small percentage in the top metro areas nationwide could ultimately result in an
increase in income of $124 billion per year for the nation.
Sharing the Model
PACT is proving to be a potential national model that may help to meet the national call to action to raise the number of college
graduates in America to the highest in the world by 2020. The College has shared the PACT success story with a presentation at
the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) Annual Meeting in February.
PACT Ad Campaign
This year, the successful PACT advertising campaign featured all of the
College’s PACT mentors. The regional ads were seen in popular magazines,
such as Seventeen and People, widely-read community newspapers such as
Newsday and The Journal
News, and prominently
located metropolitan-area
billboards. Additionally,
the campaign included
local radio spots.
MERCY COLLEGE
SEES SURGE IN ENROLLMENT
The PACT Mentoring Program Cited for Student Increase
Mercy College saw a notable expansion in
enrollment during the 2009-10 academic
year, as the total number of students
approached 10,000.
The Mercy College recruitment team conducted more
than 2,500 visits to high schools, college fairs, and
other venues as well as campus events during 2009—
with even greater volume planned for 2010.
The number of undergraduate and graduate students
represents an increase of more than 12 percent since
2007.
A number of reasons are cited for this growth—even
during a period of economic recession. The scope of
more than 90 in-demand degree programs taught by
esteemed faculty and offered at five campuses attracts
many highly talented students. In addition, when
students are weighing which college to attend, the
College’s Personalized Achievement Contract (PACT)
often is a deciding factor.
Leading with the PACT
The PACT program is designed to maximize student
success through a multi-faceted collaboration between
the student and the College. The PACT provides
incoming Mercy College students with professional,
cross-trained mentors who facilitate integrated
support for academic, career, and personal growth
that continues for their entire college experience.
Enrollment has increased 12% since 2007.
Students are innately drawn to the idea of having
mentors who they can contact 24/7—be it in person,
on the phone, or through various social networking
mediums—and who are dedicated to helping them
every step of the way in a highly personalized manner.
Inspiring and Influencing Potential
Students
Under the leadership of Deirdre Whitman since 2008,
the recruitment team has initiated changes in every
aspect of the enrollment effort, from streamlining the
application system with the latest technology to
increasing the number of recruitment visits tenfold.
Their collective efforts have contributed greatly to the
surge in enrollment. The result is a 100 percent
increase in first-time student applications from 2007-
2010.
New student enrollment has increased 84% since 2007.
MARTIN JACK ’11 WINS SPIRIT OF HOPE AWARD
Jack’s work mentoring foster children earns well-deserved recognition
want to see any other kids
go through what I went through,”
“Idon’t
says Martin Jack ’11, a Mercy
College social work major.
Jack, who was in the foster care system
from the age of nine and in seven different
homes in ten years, decided to take his
experience and help other youngsters in
foster care to succeed in life. “I know how
much my mentor helped me; without her,
I wouldn’t be where I am today,” says Jack.
“Foster kids need support and guidance
and someone willing to help them out in
tough times. Knowing how hard it was, I
don’t want to have a kid go through that
alone.” Jack mentors two children at
Abbott House, a human service agency, the
very same place where he resided as a
foster child.
Dedicated to not only mentoring children,
Jack organized a successful Pajama
Program drive on the Mercy College
Dobbs Ferry campus. The Pajama Program
donates sleepwear and children’s books to
children in foster care.
Jack, who loves working with children and
wants to make it his life’s work, recently
received the Spirit of Hope Award.
Presented by the Pajama Program, the
award is given to a young adult in
Westchester
from the foster
care system who
has shown
outstanding
courage,
perseverance, and selflessness in his or her
everyday life.
“I want to give back and be a role model
for foster care children, to give them hope
that there is a future out there.”
Jack is on the board of directors of New
Yorkers for Children and works at the
Nyack YMCA in their youth development
program.
McNair Scholars Program
Celebrates 15th Year
Now in its 15th year, the McNair Scholars program is synonymous with helping its students
achieve success in pursuing and completing advanced degrees.
“The Mercy College McNair Scholars program plays an important role in preparing students for
post-graduate education and for their future professional roles as academics, researchers, and
community leaders,” said Mercy College President Dr. Kimberly R. Cline.
Established in 1989 and named for astronaut Dr. Ronald E. McNair, the program is one of
several TRIO programs funded by the Department of Education supporting the academic
achievement of students from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
“Through their learning experiences, McNair scholars have the opportunity to contribute to our
knowledge and understanding in a wide variety of academic and professional fields,” said Dr.
Michael Sperling, provost and vice president for
academic affairs. “In doing so, students develop the
self-confidence that enables them to succeed in their
post-graduate studies and in their careers.”
Nearly half of those who completed the Mercy College McNair Scholars program are pursuing
advanced degrees.
STUDENTS DISCOVER THE HISTORY,
CULTURE AND PEOPLE OF ISRAEL
Study abroad course provides students international learning
experience
The phrase “learning on location”
took on new meaning for Mercy
College students. In January,
students enrolled in an international
business course, “Globalization and
Society 198: Learning on Location,”
spent nine extraordinary days visiting
many historical sites in Israel.
“Experiential learning of international
cultures is an important component of a
quality, well-rounded education. This
learning on location course and trip to
Israel is one of the first of its kind at
Mercy College. We are committed to
providing students additional
opportunities to experience the history of
other cultures in a global setting that will
greatly broaden and enrich their
knowledge,” says Dr. Kimberly R. Cline,
president of Mercy College.
A trip of a lifetime
According to Associate Professor of
Business Moshe Speter, Ph.D., who
developed the course, “The trip took us
on a whirlwind tour of the country where
we visited places we learned about in the
classroom. We went to Caesarea, where
we examined Roman, Byzantine history;
Nazareth, Bethlehem, and Jerusalem,
Mercy College’s Dean of the School of Education, Dr.
Alfred S. Posamentier’s new book, The Pythagorean
Theorem: The Story of Its Power and Beauty,
explores the history and importance of this
remarkable equation. It begins with a brief history of
Pythagoras and the early use of this theorem by the
ancient Egyptians, Babylonians, and Indians. It
further examines the
ingenious ways in which the
theorem has been proved
throughout history as well
as demonstrates some of
the curious applications it
has been used for down the
centuries. The book
exploring the many ways it
manifests itself through
nature and even in music.
FACULTY MEMBERS FORD AND KELLY BRING AID TO HAITI
In the days following the January 12 earthquake
that devastated Haiti, faculty members Miriam
Ford, assistant professor of nursing, and Colleen
Kelly, nursing adjunct instructor, wanted to help.
From January 25–February 2, the duo, along with
a group of healthcare professionals organized by
the House of Grace, volunteered in Haiti at
Matthew 25, a hospitality house turned outpatient
clinic, in Port-au-Prince. The group brought with
them more than 500 pounds of medical supplies.
“Immediately after the earthquake, people began
coming to Matthew 25 to receive medical care
and to offer medical care,” says Ford, pictured at
right. “The large soccer field next door became a
field hospital where nurses, nurse practitioners,
and physicians from across the world came to
volunteer.”
Working with local health agents, more than 100
Haitians per day were provided medical care at
Matthew 25 during the group’s nine-day stay.
“It was heartwarming and rewarding for us to
watch the health agents in action,” says Ford.
“They worked in an amazingly efficient way,
running a very professional clinic.”
The group also spent time in Carre Dieu treating
patients and distributing medical supplies. In
addition, they held a Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder (PTSD) seminar for health agents
working in the clinic—something Ford says was
imperative to provide as agents try to meet the
needs of a community that has been traumatized
in every way.
According to Ford, there is still much more to be
done it Haiti.
“I am amazed at the resilience of the Haitian
people,” she says. “However, at this point Haiti
remains in dire straits with many needs. We must
continue to help with this immediate crisis and
support the efforts of organizations working in
communities to provide aid.”
MERCY COLLEGE FACULTY BRING HELP AND HOPE TO CHILDREN IN LATIN
In partnership with Healing the Children (HTC) and Medical Mission Ecuador
(MME), organizations dedicated to arranging specialized medical and surgical
care for children in need, Dr. Helen Buhler, associate professor of
communication disorders, and Dr. Claudia B. Fenderson, professor of physical
therapy, traveled across the globe providing medical care for children in Colombia
and Ecuador.
Dr. Buhler’s Medical Mission to Colombia
From April 16-25, Dr. Buhler participated in a week-long HTC
medical mission at Troconis Hospital in Santa Marta, Colombia. A
medical team of plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, ear, nose
and throat specialists, and speech-language pathologists performed
78 surgeries to repair cleft lips and palates. Dr. Buhler treated
children with
pre-op and postop
care as well as
trained their families in daily home
exercises to promote improved
speech in the patients. In addition,
Dr. Buhler worked with local
audiologists in the education and
training of teachers and families for
individuals with hearing loss.
FACULTY DEVELOPMENT GRANT: Providing Therapy
to Children in Need
Mercy College’s Faculty Development Grant provides faculty members, like
Shari Berkowitz, a communication disorders instructor at the College, with
the opportunity to put their knowledge to use and give back—making a
positive difference in the lives of others.
From July 9-17, Berkowitz volunteered at Bienaventurados de Jesus, an orphanage in
Guadalajara, Mexico, with a team of 21 speech language pathologists from across the
country. In partnership with the international organization Children of Mexico, the
team provided therapy to children
suffering from autism, cerebral palsy, and a
variety of other diagnoses. They also
provided training to Bienaventurados de
Jesus staffers on topics including feeding,
assistive and augmentative
communication, and individualized
interventions for children.
“We’re making a huge difference in these
kids’ lives,” says Berkowitz, “which is very
gratifying.”
education to parents and therapists at the
hospitals and special education schools she
visited.
Funds from Mercy College’s Faculty
Development Grant were used to purchase
airfare, supplies, and cover some clinical
material used during the missions.
According to Berkowitz, most of the children at Bienaventurados de Jesus suffer from
severe impairments. However, routine therapy gives kids the chance to progress,
improving their quality of life.
“It was amazing to see how much the children could improve with just one week of
intense therapy,” Berkowitz says. “We saw changes for the better in all the kids.”
While at Bienaventurados de Jesus, Berkowitz collected data concerning attitudes
about persons with disabilities. The data will be used to discover how residents of
Guadalajara feel about the causes of disability, the possibility of improvement with
therapy, and the role of modern and folk beliefs in framing ideas about disability.
Adjunct Professor Culhane Receives Grant to Extend
Eco-Friendly, Inexpensive Production of Methane
Adjunct Professor Thomas H. Culhane of Mercy College and Katey Walter
Anthony of the University of Alaska Fairbanks received the inaugural $50,000
Blackstone Ranch Institute Innovation Challenge Grant to improve the coldseason
efficiency of biogas digesters, which
would extend the geographic range where
such digesters may be used to produce fuel.
Similar to a compost bin, a biogas digester
transforms organic waste into fertilizer and
methane gas. The methane may be used as
fuel to cook, boil water, heat a building, or
produce electricity.
In continuing research, Culhane, also
known as National Geographic Energy
Man, plans to replicate the progress made
in Alaska first in Cairo, and then in
Tanzania and Nigeria.
